UK attack: Authorities ‘probing possible link’ to Nigeria

British authorities are investigating possible involvement of Islamists from Nigeria in Wednesday’s attack on a soldier in South-east London.

Two sources familiar with the investigation told Reuters authorities were investigating a possible link to Nigeria.

The British soldier was hacked to death by suspected Islamists, while two men remain under arrest in hospital.

BBC says the soldier’s family had been informed.

Prime Minister David Cameron convened an emergency meeting of his intelligence chiefs on Thursday to look at the incident.

A dramatic clip filmed by an onlooker just minutes after Wednesday’s killing showed a man with hands covered in blood shouting Islamic slogans and promising revenge on Britain for its participation in wars in the Muslim world.

“We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you. The only reason we have done this is because Muslims are dying every day,” the black man in his 20s or 30s, wearing a wool jacket and jeans and speaking with a local accent, shouted in the footage obtained by Britain’s ITV news channel.

“This British soldier is an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.”

The attack, just a month after the bomb attacks on the Boston Marathon and the first apparent Islamist killing in London since suicide bombers struck in July 2005, revived fears of so-called “lone wolves” who might have had no direct contact with al Qaeda.

Chilling images of a blood-soaked killer urging Britons to overthrow their government or risk having their children face a fate similar to a dead soldier lying just yards away were splashed across the front pages of newspapers.

Police shot the two suspects while trying to arrest them, and the wounded men were taken into custody.

  • French court questions IMF chief Lagarde

French court questions IMF chief Lagarde

International Monetary Fund chief, Christine Lagarde, has arrived at a court in Paris for questioning over a payout to a controversial tycoon during her time as finance minister.

She is being asked to explain her handling of a row in 2007 which resulted in some 400m euros (£342m; $516m) being paid to Bernard Tapie.

She is appearing before the Court of Justice of the Republic (CJR), which investigates ministerial misconduct.

The BBC says the IMF chief insists the award was the best solution at the time.

On Wednesday she was named by Forbes Magazine as the seventh most powerful woman in the world.

Today Christine Lagarde was summoned to court – her position weakened by an investigation into corruption.

The IMF chief is still one of the most popular politicians on the right in France. People like the idea of a French woman playing such a big role on the world stage.

And after the disgrace that was heaped on the last IMF chief, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, few want to see another prominent French politician embarrassed on the world stage.

Even the Socialist leader in the Assembly, Bruno Le Roux, appeared ambivalent: “I am only concerned for the taxpayers, but it would not be a desirable thing to happen [speaking of a possible formal investigation] – there are important positions within France to defend, notably within the IMF. Lagarde has a great deal of responsibility that she fulfils extremely well.”

Supporters say that while Ms Lagarde is currently in the frame, it’s clearly Nicolas Sarkozy who is being targeted, not necessarily by the judges but by the political class.

Enebeli ordered the Commissioner of Police to stay further investigation of the allegations by the Speaker and COS pending the determination of the application before the court.

Counsel to the Chief of Staff, Vincent Uchendu told the court that the invitation by the Police Commissioner is an attempt to further violate the fundamental human rights of the two applicants.

The Speaker’s counsel Emenike Ebete expressed  doubt on the ability of the police to be fair in the investigation of the case which was adjourned till June 3, this year.

Blame Nasarawa governor for killings – Community head

The Spiritual Head of Lakyo community in Nasarawa State, Ala Agu, on Wednesday said that Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura should be blamed for the recent killing of security operatives in the state.

Agu also said that contrary to reports that he is on the run, he was yet to receive any police invitation for questioning over the unfortunate incident.

Agu spoke through an interpreter called Allu Maga.

He noted that the governor deployed armed policemen and other security operatives to Lakyo to kill him over an issue he knew nothing about.

The spiritual head spoke when Senator Solomon Ewuga (Nasarawa North) toured Lakyo community in company of other community leaders.

Agu insisted that he did not know how the security operatives died.

He noted that he was informed that the operatives were instructed to come and kill him.

He also said that he never forced anybody to be initiated into the Ombatse cultural group.

He said, “I am grateful for your coming, Senator. I am very, very grateful for your coming. Even if the Senator did not come here, I had intended to go and see him in his house but since he is here, I am very grateful.

“It is the governor that asked the people (Police officers) to come here and arrest me, cut my head and take my head to him.

“When they came, because they were themselves drunk, my god did not allow them to come to me and they died on the way.

“The question I ask is, has the governor ever invited me and I refused to go? But he sent people to come and kill me and to destroy Lakyo as a whole. “

  • Boko Haram: Detained suspects to be released in phases – Presidency

Boko Haram: Detained suspects to be released in phases – Presidency

… CAN rejects sect members’ release

The Presidency on Wednesday made clarifications on the release of persons detained in connection with the activities of the Boko Haram insurgents.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, in a statement, said the suspects would be released in phases.

According to him, the first batch of suspects to be released would be women and children who were detained on suspicion of involvement or connection with insurgency in some parts of the country.

Okupe said the phased release of detainees was to encourage other insurgents who may wish to embrace the peace option to come out and take advantage of the dialogue and peace option.

“This would be followed by other phased releases where cases would be treated on their individual merits by the Defence authorities and security agencies,” Okupe added.

The President’s aide stated that President Goodluck Jonathan’s directive on the detained suspects was as a result of the interim report by the Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Peace in northern Nigeria.

The committee, he said, recommended the measure as part of government’s multi-faceted strategy to solving the security challenges posed by the activities of the Boko Haram sect.

“This directive by Mr. President further proves that the Federal Government has not foreclosed dialogue as a viable option in its bid to put an end to insurgency and terrorist activities in the northern part of the country.

“It is expected that this phased release of detainees would encourage those who wish to embrace the peace option to come out and take advantage of the dialogue and peace option provided by the committee put in place by government.”

Meanwhile, the Christian Association of Nigeria has opposed the planned release of the Boko Haram suspects from detention, saying government’s decision to free the suspects is like giving them the “license to carry out more suicide bombings.”

The body said “if those who deliberately killed innocent people are given freedom to walk the streets without punishment, then is clear indication that Nigerians have no nation.”

Addressing a press briefing at the NUJ House in Makurdi on Wednesday, the Chairman of the Benue State chapter of CAN, Bishop Yiman Orkwar, appealed to President Jonathan to withdraw his directive on the suspects’ release, saying such action would further escalate the security situation in the region.

He also condemned the recent killing of innocent farmers in the state by people he described as Fulani jihadist.

  • Nigeria spent N228.5b on sugar import – Senate

Nigeria spent N229 billion on sugar importation in the last three years, the Senate said on Wednesday.

Also, over 10,000 workers lost their jobs during the period as a result of waivers the Federal Government granted to selected major sugar importers into the country.

It was further revealed that the 10 per cent of government funds which accrued to the Sugar Levy Account had been spent for other purposes other than the purposes for which it was meant.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Investment, Nenadi Esther Usman, stated these while leading a debate on a Bill for an “Act to amend the National Sugar Development Council Act Cap N78 LFN 2011 and for other matters connected there with” in Abuja.

Senate President David Mark described the federal government’s waivers policy as a “classic example of policy failure.”

Usman said: “The funds in the Sugar Levy Account are dedicated for a specific purpose but over the years, monies have been withdrawn from the account for other purposes not related to sugar sector development.

“These amendments are required to ensure council’s direct access to its funds and prevent the fund’s use for unintended purposes.

“Beginning from around 2004, when the first sugar refinery started operating in the country, the money accruing to the Sugar Levy Account has witnessed a steady decline.

“This is due mainly to the fact that most imports now are raw sugar, which currently enjoys waiver on the payment of the 10 per cent sugar levy.

“Nigeria currently consumes some 1.3 million metric tones of sugar annually but produces only 30,000 to 50,000 tonnes, which is less than five per cent of its annual consumption.

“The huge supply gap is bridged through imports of sugar, mainly from Brazil.

“Nigeria spent N53.6 billion, N73 billion and N101.9 billion respectively in 2009, 2010 and 2011 on sugar importation in order to meet the nation’s requirement.”

  • KIND invites nomination for Examplars of love and forgiveness

The Kudirat Initiative for Democracy (KIND) has invited nomination of exemplars of love and forgiveness -from conflict actors to peace builders- from the six geopolitical zones of the country.

The project in collaboration with Festzer Institute according to Project Administrator of KIND, Steve Aborishade is designed to identify and highlight the works of unspoken heroes of peace who have relied on the transformative power of love and forgiveness from different communities.

“It is hoped that their examples will serve as an inspiration to other communities in ways that will transcend primordial sentiments of ethnicity and religious leanings and further promote and advance the capacity of our people to love and forgive,” Aborishade stated.

Individuals and groups are to nominate worthy individual(s) on this website http://www.nijaexemplarsoflove-forgiveness.org/?page=welcome.

“It is meant to replicate and localize the ever increasing transformative impact that love and forgiveness can have on conflict situations ranging between individuals, communities, and the society as a whole, in Nigeria.

“We ask, beyond amnesty, can love and forgiveness heal our wounds? Can it place us on a new landscape of mutual coexistence based on respect and sensitivity to each other’s diversity?

“ KIND sees this project as a chance and platform for exchange of ideas and opportunities, and, an avenue for broader practical application of the lessons that can be gleaned from the works of identified exemplars, which can be replicated and built upon while growing an enduring awareness around the concept of love and forgiving as a transformative energy among individuals, communities and the larger society,” Aborishade explained.
