    Achebe’s corpse arrives for burial

The remains of the renowned novelist, Prof. Chinua Achebe, arrived the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at exactly 6.00am on Tuesday. It was received by the author’s wife, Christy and children: Ike, Chidi, Chinelo and Nwando, in-laws and top dignitaries from different spheres of life.
The corpse laid inside a dark brown-coloured casket, covered with Nigerian flag, was lifted down from the aircraft into an Oxblood coloured ambulance whose plate number had the author’s name, Chinua Achebe, as inscription.
It was ushered into the reception hall of the airport in a procession led by the Anglican Bishop on the Niger, Rt. Rev. Bishop Owen Nwokolo, accompanied by the family members, Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, Secretary to the  Government of the Federation, Chief Anyim Pius Anyim; Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo; former Abia State Governor, Ogbonaya Onu and  former minister of state for Education, Dr. Jerry Agada, among others.
The service commenced with hymns and prayers as movement was restricted at the airport.
In his sermon, Nwokolo said Achebe was a great man of dignity and excellence.
He said: “I remember today Achebe’s legendary statement which said, ‘if a man returns from a long journey, and no one says welcome, he feels he has not arrived or at all.” We are gathered to say nno to Achebe. He has come back, though dead but we know that his works keep him alive in our heart. We are gathered to receive him because of what he has accomplished throughout the world.”

He said Achebe would be remembered for his humility, patriotism and transparency, adding that he was a man who lived an exemplary life. “He was contented with what he had. He rejected the national honours twice because he wanted the government to correct their corrupt system first. While others lived all their lives to corner wealth, Achebe lived an exemplary life. The world should learn from his legacies. He was wealthy but never allowed his wealth to mar his reputation,” he said.
Obi said Achebe lived the life he preached in his books. Although he was the only governor at the airport to receive Achebe, he claimed he was representing other Nigerian governors.
Ike, Achebe’s first born said he was astonished by the response he got from all over the world, noting that the support the family has received over his father’s transition has been tremendous. He said: “I want to appreciate everyone that has worked tirelessly to ensure that the transition is peaceful. I thank you all.”
Achebe’s body was later flown to Enugu from where it would leave for Ogidi, Anambra State, for other funeral activities.

British PM ‘losing control of party over Europe’

British Prime Minister, David Cameron, is losing control of his party over Europe, former Conservative cabinet minister Lord Howe has said.

The Tory leadership is “running scared” of its backbenchers by offering to renegotiate the United Kingdom’s relationship with Brussels, he said in the Observer.

He also warned that if a proposed referendum led to the UK leaving the European Union, there would be dire consequences for the country’s global influence.

The Tories said the PM’s position on seeking to return powers was unchanged.

BBC reports that Lord Howe’s warning comes amid press reports that a figure close to the prime minister called grassroots Conservatives pushing for an EU referendum “mad, swivel-eyed loons.”

No. 10 denied “anyone in Downing Street” had made the remarks, while party co-chairman Lord Feldman said he was taking legal advice over “untrue” web rumours he had made “derogatory comments.”

Crackdown on Boko Haram members to continue – Army

Nigeria’s army has vowed to continue its offensive against militants in the north-east “as long as it takes” to achieve its main objectives.

The Army Spokesman, Brig. Gen. Chris Olukolade told the BBC the aim was to assert Nigeria’s “territorial integrity as a nation.”

Earlier, a 24-hour curfew was imposed in parts of the city of Maiduguri, where the military said it had arrested 65 “terrorists.”

Maiduguri has been an important base for Boko Haram militants.

Earlier this week, President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe States – after a series of deadly attacks by militant groups.

He told the BBC World Service Newshour programme that the offensive “knows the targets it is after, and it took a long time to plan and prepare for this.”

“It is their (insurgent) bases, their weaponry, their logistics that we are going to deal with in this operation,” he added.

Earlier, an army statement named 12 areas of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, which would now be under permanent curfew.

BBC says the neighbourhoods listed are considered strongholds of Boko Haram. The whole of Maiduguri was already subject to an overnight curfew.

Witnesses said troops were stopping lorries from entering the city.

The army also said the 65 insurgents had been arrested trying to infiltrate Maiduguri. Those held had been “fleeing from various camps now under attack.”

However, there has been no independent confirmation of the arrests.

  • Police chief seeks dissolution of 14-year old second marriage

An Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr. Benjamin Wordu on Thursday asked a customary
court sitting at Ibagwa-Ani, in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State,
for dissolution of his 14-year-old marriage with his wife, Nkem Juliet Wordu.

The ACP, who is the Area commander, in charge of Onitsha Area command of the
Nigerian Police, told the court that he was no longer interested in the marriage. He
is accusing his wife of gross disobedience to his orders.

A mild drama had played out at the commencement of hearing on the matter when Wordu
sat down during his cross examination, a development that was vehemently opposed by
the counsel to the respondent, Mr. J.U Ugwuoke.

The President of the customary court, Sunday  Ugwude took notice of Ugwuoke’s
objection and asked him to make his protest formal.

Ugwuoko told the court that “I have never seen where anybody no matter how highly
placed sits down to answer questions in the court. I therefore, urge the court to
order the petitioner to stand up in respect to this court. If he must sit down, his
lawyer must appeal to the court to allow him do so”.

The application was not opposed by Wordu’s counsel, Ugwu K.A, who held the brief of
Offorkansi Clement. Consequently, the court ordered him to stand up.

However, his counsel later made official request to the court to allow him sit down.

The request was not opposed and as such the court then obliged the appeal.

During the cross-examination, Wordu, who had earlier given his evidence on the 26th
of April, told the court that prior to the present crisis-ridden marriage, he had
also had another wife, who he divorced for undisclosed reasons.

He admitted that the said first marriage produced a son, identified as Wordu
    Benjamin, Chinurum Jnr.

It was gathered that having divorced his first wife, the Rivers State born police
officer got married to Juliet, in 1999, a marriage that is also blessed with four
    kids.

He admitted that Benjamin Jnr who was not living with him prior to his marriage with
Juliet, moved into his house after the marriage, adding that the boy lived
peacefully with the then new wife.

Wordu, who had variously been the DPO in charge of Uwani and Udi Police Stations,
Enugu told the court that by the time he was going on transfer to Rivers State in
2009, they were already having problems in the marriage.

One of the major issues he raised against Juliet, was that she allegedly despised
his order and went ahead to buy a vehicle.

“I told her not to buy any a car because at that moment, she was having problem with
her contracts in the Prison Officers Wives’ Association (POWA).

“She was the secretary of POWA, so I asked her to mind her business, which had to do
with construction of some stalls”, Wordu stated, adding that the former Inspector
General of Police also made efforts to resolve the crisis.

“The wife of the former IG of police became aware of the problem between us when she
reported the matter to them. The IG then directed the Rivers State Commissioner of
Police and his wife to look into the matter”, he said.

Wordu equally informed the court that he called a family meeting, where he told his
kinsmen of his wife’s alleged disloyalty to him by purchasing the car against his
    directive.

He further disclosed that within that period, he was residing at Port Hacourt, while the wife and the children
    were in Enugu.

“My wife is still holding my children; that’s why I am asking the court to allow me
have them. I don’t know when she relocated to Abuja with them”.

He alleged that he had it on good authority that his wife was getting married to
    another man.

When asked to explain how he came about the information, he said one of his Nsukka
in-laws, simply identified as Coach sent text message to that regards.

It was gathered that part of the Area Commander’s grouse against the wife was the
inability of his in-laws to attend his father’s burial ceremony.

When asked whether he informed the in-laws about his father’s death he said: “I told
my wife about it, and having done that, I believe it is left for her to tell her
people. If somebody dies, a delegation must not be sent to inform people. I know
that sometimes some people will just hear where people are crying over loss of a
relation and they just run into the place without anybody inviting them and present
whatever they want to the bereaved”.

Mrs. Wordu, who had during her plea objected to the dissolution of the marriage is
to give her evidence on May 21.
