Founded in 1947, the Saudi Arabian side is based in Riyadh  and was named at first Shabab Al Riyadh until 1967 when it  was renamed Al Shabab FC.

Ahead CAF Elections: Uchegbulam endorses Senghor for CAF Presidency

    Morakinyo Abodunrin

Seasoned football administrator Mazi Amanze Uchegbulam has declared Senegalese Augustin Senghor as the most ideal candidate in the forthcoming election for the CAF presidency.

Only four candidates including Patrice Motsepe (South Africa), Ahmed Yahya (Mauritania), Jacques Anouma (Cote d’Ivoire) and Senghor have been  cleared by both  the CAF’s Governance and FIFA’s Review committees  to run for the elections  to be held in Morocco on March  12 even as  hitherto suspended President Ahmad battle over his ineligibility to contest.

Uchegbulam who served  as Vice President CAF Board of Appeal for over a  decade said  Senghor  has the temperament  and capacity to steer the continental soccer ruling  on its recovery  in the light of recent challenges, adding the Senegalese posturing  reminds  him of a young  and dynamic  Issa Hayatou (Cameroon)  who was ousted in 2017 by Ahmad.

“ In actual fact, I related extensively with most of the presidential candidates during my 12 years as Vice President CAF Board of Appeal,” Uchegbulam, former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) 1st  Vice President, told NationSport exclusively.“ I find Senghor most suitable to reposition CAF in view of the managerial confusion within CAF set up now.”

Urbane in outlook, Senghor has been president of the Senegal Football Association since 2009 and he said his candidacy was ‘ for a united, more efficient and more attractive African football.’ “ Senghor is calm, uncontroversial, young but greatly and essentially experienced,” Uchegbulam, the current Imo State FA chairman further noted.  “His transparency and penchant for accountability knew no bounds and above all, he’s  loved by all. Actually reminds me of Issa Hayatou in 1988. I advise that, if the choice is to come from within ( among the presidents), Senghor is the man for the job. My position has nothing to do with politics or interest but very factual as one who was within the corridors of  CAF from 2006 to 2018 “I Presided over several cases which involved several Presidents of football associations/federations. I know them very well.”

Meanwhile, Uchegbulam  has equally endorsed the candidacy of NFF President Amaju Melvin Pinnick for a seat on the FIFA Council-the highest decision-making organ in global  football, adding it would boost the country’s stature.

He said :“For Amaju, I think election into FIFA Council shall be of immense benefits to country. Nigeria government needs to support him fully. The advantages are great to the nation; we saw the benefits from Sir Oyo Orok Oyo and Dr Amos Adamu as members of FIFA executive committee then.”

We commiserate with his family and pray that the Almighty Allah will forgive his shortcomings as well as give his family the fortitude to bear the loss,” Alumona quoted Ogunsanya as saying.

Egbe urges administrators to invest in facilities

    Our Reporter

The Chief Executive Officer of Monimichelle Group, Ebi Egbe, has advised owners of elite football teams in Nigeria to invest in good facilities for the benefit of the game.

Egbe said it was important for players to get used to playing on good surfaces to make them get better with modern tactics in the game.

He said:  “Good football surfaces will enhance free flow of the game and the players will be happy to express themselves better.

“Our administrators of teams in the NPFL should guarantee good facilities for the teams starting from the pitches.

“An example is the Abia Warriors team that trains on bad turf but play on a very new turf at the Enyimba Stadium. This affects them because the good turf is strange to the players and it gives the opposing teams with good turf an advantage.”

Egbe who was one of the 10 sports personalities, who received the special recognition awards at the Sportsville Awards on Saturday in Lagos, added that the technology of grassing a football pitch is improving day-by-day.

“We are in a jet age. The materials we used for the pitches we delivered last year and year before cannot be used again. We have information that there are latest materials that will further make the synthetic pitches be of similar mode with the natural grass.

“Things are really evolving and we are moving fast with the modern trends,” Egbe said.

Monimichelle Group laid the playing turf of Enyimba Stadium, Aba, Jarkanda Stadium Katsina, Aper Aku Stadium, Makurdi, Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa and Onikan Stadium, Lagos.

The Monimichelle boss however expressed gratitude to the organisers of the Sportsville Awards for counting him worthy for the honour.

“I am really excited about this and I will always cherish this award. This honour will make me work harder to do more for the development of the game in Nigeria,” he added.

  • Elite noise

    Elite noise

    Hardball

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s response to the appointment of new service chiefs was instructive.  Away from the hair-splitting, ethnic radicalism of the John Nwodo era, Prof. George Obiozor, famed academic, former ambassador and new Ohanaeze president-general, opted for a more conciliatory tone.

Ohanaeze hailed President Muhammadu Buhari’s choice of Major-Gen. Leo Irabor as new chief of Defence staff, especially saluting the nativity of the beneficiary as ethnic Igbo, though of the Niger Delta hue, from the Western Igbo stock of Delta State.  That was commendable, he stressed, for the president ought to be hailed as finding a fellow Igbo worthy, as top dog, in his new security infrastructure.

Still, while ours is ours, mine would continue to be mine.  While Gen. Irabor belonged to the South-South geo-political zone, no South East scion was still represented, in that core conclave.

So, the president should please make amends, when the retirement-bound current inspector-general of Police (IGP) exits — and everyone would live happily ever-after: except, of course, a counter-lobby growls that a “mere” IGP isn’t core security enough!

Technically, you could hardly fault the logic, tact and wisdom of the Ohanaeze pitch.  True: South East is unrepresented as service chief.  But true too: Ohanaeze risks being interpreted as saying Irabor, though Igbo, is not Igbo enough, under Ohanaeze’s acid test!

That sure could be mischief.  But then mischief would appear part and parcel of the trade — of jockeying for legitimate share, in a multi-ethnic democracy like Nigeria’s.

Of course, there is also the politics of identity, fuelling vicarious satisfaction — no crime!  That’s why CNN featured a Black American woman who said she broke down in joyful tears, at Kamara Harris’s pick, for US Vice President.  In Barack Obama’s new book, A Promised Land, some African-American, Latino and Asian-American White House valets told President Obama he wouldn’t know what his emergence, as president, meant to their White House tribe!

Tingling pleasures, of the politics of identity!  Again, no crime.

Still, the way Nigeria’s ethnic majors log on to the politics of identity racket is rather nauseating.  Anytime appointments — major or minor — come, ethnic champions whip out their tribal microscopes to scour the list, for kith-and-kin.

Absence of such fuels jeremiads, that swear the country is cascading into a ditch.  Presence powers jubilant triumphalism, suggesting that with a co-ethnic there, nothing can go wrong; and proclaiming the union recharged!  Yet, neither assures the success or failure of the new appointee.

And what if the slew of minorities join the racket?  Enter, babble of the neo-Tower of Babel!

Where an appointee comes from is elite noise.  Without prejudice to fairness in appointive spread as befits a just federation, a heathier consensus should be on quality of service, not the nativity of the appointed.
