Kano Assembly postpones resumption over COVID-19

    Our Reporter

The second wave of COVID-19 has forced Kano State House of Assembly to postpone its resumption.

The Speaker of the House of Assembly, Hon. Hamisu Ibrahim-Chidari, said in a statement in Kano that the legislators will remain at home until further notice, in compliance with the stay-at-home directive of the state government.

The Assembly was scheduled to resume on Monday, January 25, but Ibrahim-Chidari said “the virus is back.”

He appealed to residents of the state, “especially religious leaders to continue to pray for the end of the pandemic, not only in Kano, but in the country.”

He also asked the public to adhere to the COVID-19 safety protocols as directed by experts and to keep supporting the government in preventing the spread of the virus.

The state government had directed civil servants to stay at home, pending further directives.

The state government however said schools were not affected by the order and that teachers and other members of staff should continue with their normal duties.

    Kano to introduce COVID-19 marshals

    Our Reporter

The Kano State Government plans to appoint COVID- 19 marshals to enforce safety protocols, Governor  Abdullahi Ganduje, announced on Saturday in Kano.

Ganduje told reporters that there is need to tackle COVID-19 with all seriousness, as non- compliance to safety protocols has been identified as a huge challenge to curb the spread of the virus.

Ganduje said the state government had held a meeting with relevant agencies to find a template on how the compliance would be enforced.

“Enforcement of compliance with COVID-19 protocols would soon come up in the state. People should comply for the health of the citizenry,” he said.

He added: “The state task force on COVID-19 held a meeting with security agencies to embark on the enforcement to ensure that members of the society do comply for optimum results.”

The governor said the vanguards would include security agencies, the paramilitary and non-governmental organisations.

He asked the mass media to continue to enlighten the public on the dangers of the pandemic.

“We are very happy that you are cooperating with the state government in this fight,” he said.

The governor, who also met with private school proprietors, urged them to complement government efforts in curbing the menace in their respective schools.

Ganduje commended the proprietors for their cooperation so far.

One feared dead as soldiers, IPOB’s security outfit clash in Imo

    By Chris Njoku, Owerri

One person was feared dead while scores were wounded in a clash between Nigerian Army and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)  security outfit in Okporo Orlu in Imo State.

It was gathered that the soldiers who were in military operation in the area stormed the community suspected to be the operational base of the IPOB newly formed Eastern Security Network (ESN).

A resident in the area told The Nation that there was a shootout between soldiers and IPOB men and several people were wounded.

According to him, about five people were injured while one person was killed.

Also, about five buildings, including a church, Blessed Holy Trinity Sabbath Mission, in Orlu Local Government Area, were said to have been allegedly set ablaze by “some armed security operatives” who invaded the area.

The incident, according to a source, happened around 6am on Friday.

“The burning of the church was carried out by those masked security agents and the church that was burnt was the Holy Trinity Sabbath Mission in Orlu Local Government Area.

“About five buildings were burnt and only one person was killed and the person was killed at the market square. I want to tell you that the incident happened on Friday early morning.”

The IPOB Media and Publicity Secretary told our correspondent that the soldiers are killing civilians.

“The soldiers have been killing civilians since this week in the area.”

“How did we attack them first, did we go to their base and attack them first or did they come to attack us in a bush where we normally stay and work. We are not on the streets or roads; we pursue terrorists in the bush and forest,” he stated.

Speaking, the Garrison Commander, 34 Artillery Brigand, Obinze, Brig Gem.  Yusuf Tukura, alleged that the people first killed security personnel.

He told our correspondent on phone: “Why do you want to confirm from me. Did you confirm from them why they killed a policeman? ”

However, the state police spokesman, Orlando Ikeokwu, said that he was not aware of any casualties but “what I know is that there is military operation going on in the area. “

  • IPOB endangering lives, properties of Ndigbo – Iwuanyanwu

IPOB endangering lives, properties of Ndigbo – Iwuanyanwu

    By Damian Duruiheoma, Owerri

Elder statesman, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, says members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) are endangering the lives, investments and properties of Igbos in Igboland and across Nigeria by their unguarded and provocative comments and actions.

Speaking when the leadership of the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) conferred on him the award as its grand patron in Owerri, the Imo State capital, Iwuanyanwu decried the collateral damage done to the Igbos and their businesses over actions of IPOB and its leader, Nnamdi Kanu in recent times.

He lamented that most times, IPOB members had taken responsibilities for actions they knew nothing about, thereby endangering the lives of the Igbos.

“Igbo youths must avoid circumstances that they do not understand. What IPOB did during the #ENDSARS protests was very heinous. Their leader went about taking responsibility for issues and destructions they knew nothing about.

“He also ordered his followers to kill some people in Igboland. If you give orders for another person to be killed in your place, don’t be surprised that your people will be killed also. There is no place in Nigeria that you can’t find an Igbo man. So, ordering the killing of anyone in your community is endangering your people. Apart from the fact that most of our population live outside Igboland, Igbo investment outside Igboland is over $2trillion,” he said.

Iwuanyanwu advised the IPOB leader to follow the footsteps of late Biafran leader, Oduimegwu Ojukwu, reminding him that before the beginning of Biafra War in 1967, Ojukwu did not declare secession on his own, but was called upon by all to do so. He however said currently, Ndigbo are not talking about secession but are demanding the restructuring of the country to allow for equity for all Nigerians.

Iwuanyanwu said, “Ojukwu did not ignore elders and he never declared Biafra on his own. It was the people from all walks of life – the academia, businessmen, civil and public servants that called upon him to declare the state of Biafra and become its leader. That was why Ojukwu was able to hold Nigeria for three years without rebellion. Most of us who fought the war were intelligent, but we had to join and fight the war. We’re very proud that we fought that war.

On why he took over Prof. George Obiozor’s campaign ahead of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo election, Iwuanyanwu disclosed that some charlatans were about securing the endorsement of Governor Hope Uzodimma for the position of president general. “I’ve sacrificed my life fighting for Ndigbo. I revived Ohanaeze Ndigbo in 1988 when I was running for Nigeria’s president. The reason for that was because of my desire for Ndigbo to speak with one voice,” he said.

Woman strikes husband to death with shoe heel in Delta

A yet-to-be identified woman on Saturday morning struck her husband to death with the heel of her shoe in Ugbuwangue community, Warri, Delta State.

The deceased, identified as Etsebanghanro Ighomi, was a father of two children, information on his Facebook page suggests.

It was gathered that the incident occurred close to the community’s town hall at about 11 am.

The deceased was said to be a member of the Ugbuwangue community executive until his death.

While details of the circumstances surrounding the incident were still sketchy at press time, there were feelers to the effect that the couple had been quarreling over alleged acts of infidelity on the part of the deceased.

The Nation learnt that the woman had approached the husband where he sat and struck him in the back of his head with a block-heeled shoe.

The husband, spitting out saliva, reportedly fell on the ground immediately and died before he could be rushed to a hospital.

A source who resides in the area said the woman was already in police custody, adding that the couple had at least one child together.

When reached for comments, the spokesperson of the Delta State Police Command, Onome Onowakpoyeya, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said the police were awaiting official complaint from the family.

  • ACF, Afenifere clash as row deepen over herders quit order

ACF, Afenifere clash as row deepen over herders quit order

By Emmanuel Oladesu, Deputy Editor; Sam Egburonu; Bisi Oladele, Ibadan; AbdulGafar Alabelewe, Kaduna; Frank Ikpefan, Abuja; Yinka Adeniran, Ibadan

A furious Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) warned on Saturday that continued attacks on herders in the Southwest may trigger a civil war in the country.

It asked the federal government and the Southwest governors to step in immediately and stop what it called the drift.

It also called for immediate arrest of the Southwest activist, Sunday Igboho, who issued the quit order on criminals in Ibarapa area of Oyo State.

The ACF statement drew an instant response from the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, who dismissed the statement from Kaduna as hypocritical tears, arrogant and insulting.

The Afenifere declared that the South-west cannot be threatened with “a war at this stage as we will not provoke war but never are we going to run for anybody on our land.”

But another group of Yoruba leaders – Coalition of Oduduwa Elders- condemned the Friday arson attack on the property of Sarkin Fulani in Ibarapa, Alhaji Saliu Abdulkadir.

It said the development is inimical to the unity of the country which the Southwest stands for and does not represent the Yoruba people.

Second Republic member of the House of Representatives, Dr.Junaid Mohammed, said it is illegal, immoral and irresponsible for any Nigerian to order fellow Nigerians to quit any part of the country.

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) also condemned the attack which it said was part of a grand design to destabilise Nigeria and in particular bring the North to its knees.

The ACF, in a statement entitled ‘Stop the drift in the South West’ and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Emmanuel Yawe, said the Nigerian civil war was triggered by attacks and counter-attacks akin to what is happening in the Southwest.

It said the brains behind the quit order on herders in Oyo State should, therefore, be apprehended and be made to face the full wrath of the law.

It said: “The Arewa Consultative Forum this morning (yesterday) received reports of an attack by Yoruba Youths on Alhaji Saliu Abdulkadir, the Serki Fulani in Oyo State.

“In the reports, he was attacked and driven out of his house, 11 cars and his house burnt with his family members now living in the bush.

“There are allegations that one Sunday Igboho, an agitator for Oodua Republic and who issued an ultimatum giving Fulani people seven days to leave Yorubaland, is the instigator of the attack.

“The most disturbing aspect of the attack is the allegation that the security agents who were earlier warned about its imminence stood by helplessly as the attack was carried out.

“The ACF is worried about this trend and calls on the federal and state governments in the Southwest to move quickly to avert a social upheaval that may destabilise the whole country.

We recall that the civil war in the 60’s started with attacks and counter-attacks like this.

“The governments must be proactive and stop history from repeating itself.

Those who carried out these attacks must be apprehended and the due process of the law allowed to take its course.

“If this is not done, there may be counter-attacks in the north and the country will be up in flames. The authorities must act. The ACF is very worried and calls on them to act fast.”

Afenifere to ACF: Your statement is arrogant, hypocritical, insulting

In a swift response to the ACF comments, Afenifere frowned at what it described as threat by the northern group and its reference to the 1966 event that created tension in the country.

Afenifere said in a statement by its Publicity Secretary,  Yinka Odumakin, that while it had always appealed to the people of the Southwest  to remain calm despite their alleged harassment by herders, ACF had reacted with insulting and arrogant statement to the Ibarapa crisis.

His words: “The attention of Afenifere has been drawn to the hypocritical tears of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) over clashes in Ibarapa Local Government Area of Oyo State occasioned by the inimical activities of Fulani herdsmen against indigenous Yoruba people.

“While we have gone to a great length to sue for peace and have appealed to our pained people to be law abiding even with the daily provocations of the Fulani and harassment of our people, we frown at the very arrogant and insulting ACF statement, especially their reference to the event of 1966.

“We must make it clear to them that they cannot threaten us with a war at this stage as we will not provoke war but never are we going to run for anybody on our land.

“We are miffed that a body like ACF that has never shown any remorse over the killing of our people can open their mouths anyhow now because there are consequences for the irresponsible actions of their people.

“We advise them to call their criminals to order and not expect our people to sheepishly wait to be killed by those who value cow lives more than human beings.

“We do not want a repeat of 1966 event, but if there are people plotting such event again, the rain will be over their heads.”

Nigeria’s unity can’t be sacrificed on alter of criminality, says Coalition of Oduduwa Elders

However, another group of Southwest leaders – Coalition of Oduduwa Elders- differed from Afenifere.

The coalition condemned the attack on Alhaji Salihu AbdulKadir and called for the arrest and prosecution of perpetrators of the act immediately by security agencies.

They stated that the unity of Nigeria cannot be sacrificed on the altar of criminality.

The coalition in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Dr. Tunde Aremu and National Secretary, Mrs Folake Ajasin, said the attack was inimical to the unity of the country which they stand for.

The action, according to them, does not represent the Yoruba people.

“This action is unacceptable to us. It is criminal, barbaric and uncivilised,” they said.

Continuing, they said: “While we acknowledge the criminal activities of some suspected Fulani herdsmen in the state, we must state that the attack of the Sarkin Fulani Oyo is madness taken too far.

“The Sarkin Fulani has lived in Oyo State for a very long time and has been known to be very peaceful.

“He has spoken publicly and privately against the criminal activities of some of their deviant youths and tasked security agencies to go after them.

“The Sarkin Fulani Oyo deserves commendation for his actions against the few criminals masquerading as herdsmen in Oyo and not this kind of evil and injustice meted on him by some of the criminals in our region.

“This is highly condemnable and must be condemned by all.

“Criminality is not a tribal trademark but a global trend involving people from every tribe.

“We all know that they are more good Fulani people than bad ones, just like there are also criminals of Yoruba extraction. Hence it will be wrong to attribute criminality to every Fulani person in the Southwest.

“We must remember that we have our brothers in the North who have been living there for ages as well. We shouldn’t set this country on fire for our selfish interest.

“We, therefore, urge all the governors in the Southwest states to take responsibility of their states’ security by ensuring that every lawful Fulani man and woman living in the Southwest is safe and protected from any form of attack and violence in the interest of peace and national unity. Tthey must commence an immediate, robust stakeholders’ meeting to engage all parties.

“We call on our Fulani and Northern brothers not to see this act as an act of Yoruba people but a clear act of criminality perpetrated by some misguided youths that will be brought to book in no time.

“The unity of Nigeria cannot be sacrificed on the altar of criminality.”

    Olubadan sues for peace

The Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji, asked farmers and herders in Ibarapa area of Oyo State and Nigeria in general to live in harmony for the unity and development of Nigeria.

Speaking on Saturday during the Royal Festival of Praise organised by the Holy Ghost Royal House of Restoration Church in Ibadan, the traditional ruler, represented by Mogaji Okiti-Aresa, Chief Adeshina Olatunji, said blaming a particular ethnic group for insecurity in the country would only further breed disunity in the country and should not be allowed.

Adetunji called on Nigerians to support the security agencies in the country in tackling criminal activities and refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

The Olubadan also called on religious leaders and traditional leaders to complement government’s efforts in preaching unity in their various domains and constantly pray for peace and unity of the country.

“As leaders, it does not mean we are above God. Traditional rulers, religious leaders should know that they are not God, and we must lead our people in a Godly manner,” Oba Adetunji said.

Convene council of state meeting immediately, Alao-Akala advises Makinde

A former governor of Oyo State and Chairman Elders Advisory Council, All Progressives Congress (APC), Oyo State, Adebayo Alao-Akala, advised Governor Seyi Makinde to convene a council of state meeting immediately to brainstorm on the security challenges facing the state.

Alao-Akala gave the advice while speaking with reporters after an expanded meeting of the Elders Advisory Council of the APC in Ibadan.

According to him, a council of state meeting comprising all former civilian and military governors was necessary at this point to save the state from total security collapse.

A council of state meeting is a statutory organ of government whose functions include advising the executive in policy making.

Alao-Akala said: “Governor Seyi Makinde needs help in the area of maintaining law and order in the polity hence he should not shy away from that fact.

“He needs to sit down and brainstorm with people who have been there before him to share from their wealth of experience on how certain things are done, especially in the area of security.

“Take for instance, at the national level, the President meets periodically with former heads of state and former presidents and all former chief justices among others at the Nigerian Council of State meeting to review activities of government and seek for advice and interventions where need be.

“This is exactly what he needs in Oyo State at the moment. The peace and stability of Oyo State is a collective responsibility of all. We are all stakeholders in the Oyo State project.

“We have seasoned, well trained retired generals who have been military administrators of Oyo State at one time or the other, who are still alive.

“We have civilian governors who have been on that seat before Governor Makinde. So also are retired chief judges of the state who will have one or two pieces of advice to offer to nip in the bud all these security challenges before they get out of control.

“Part of the duties of the council of state is also to advise whenever requested to do so on the maintenance of public order within the federation and any part thereof and in such other matters as may be desired.

“So, Governor Seyi Makinde will very much be in order if he convenes this strategic meeting as a stitch in time saves nine.”

It’s grand plan to cripple North – North’s Coalition

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) believes the Ibarapa attack is not an isolated incident but part of a grand design to destabilise Nigeria and in particular bring the North to its knees.

Spokesman for the coalition, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, warned the instigators of the attack to desist, as the North knows how to retaliate such attacks.

He said though the coalition is still meeting over the development, it is already considering a number of options, starting with recalling all Northerners  in the south back home before considering the next move.

The CNG Spokesman alleged that for too long, enemies of the North, both foreign and local, have worked strenuously to ensure that the region remains backward, divided, weak, confused and bewildered by myriads of challenges.

He said: “It is no longer in doubt that for too long, enemies of the North, both foreign and local, have worked strenuously to ensure that the region remains backward, divided, weak, confused and bewildered by myriads of challenges and problems.

“Today, everyone can see a clear pattern drawn from the strategies employed to achieve these results, namely the diminishing of North’s viability and, in particular, bringing the population down by direct annihilation or political and economic incapacitation.”

It’s illegal, irresponsible to order quit notice on fellow Nigerians – Junaid Mohammed

Second Republic federal lawmaker, Dr Junaid Mohammed, yesterday told The Nation that it is illegal, immoral and irresponsible for any Nigerian to order fellow Nigerians to quit any part of the country.

He said: “Any attempt by anybody to serve notice on a fellow Nigerian to quit where he is normally residing, where he does his business or where he works, or whatever, is illegal, immoral and thoroughly irresponsible.

“And the intention of the governors who have been giving such notices has nothing to do with insecurity; it has nothing to do with harmonious existence among the ethnic groups involved. It is nothing but politics.

“For example, the one in Ondo, everybody knows that he has his political ambition. He and the governor of Ekiti, Fayemi, have their political ambitions. They have been going round, trying to overheat the polity because they believe that somehow, by overheating the polity and presenting themselves as being anti-certain people and therefore pro-certain people, they will derive some political benefits from it.

“But as far as I am concerned, whatever we do, and that includes all of us from Buhari down to Akeredolu or Makinde, has to be within the law. We cannot dictate to another Nigerian where to reside in or say that his stay is at the sufferance of certain people.

“I had cause to make statement before when some young boys here, who called themselves Association of Northern Youths or whatever, served notice to the Igbo, saying the Igbo must leave the North, I think about two years ago.

“I said then and I repeat it now that such a call is unconstitutional, illegal, immoral and thoroughly irresponsible.

“If we want to live in peace and we believe in the Nigerian project, then we must find a way of living within the law.

“If there is no law, then we must create the law. If there is an existing law today that says a governor or whoever has the right to ask a certain group of Nigerians to leave or to quit a certain area of his jurisdiction, then, of course, it will be perfectly within the law.

“In that case, anybody that disagrees with such a law can go to court or ask the federal government to intervene.

“But today, I don’t believe any Nigerian has the right to come and simply announce that herders are troublesome; that the Fulanis are not exactly wanted because Buhari is a Fulani man; that as a leader he is a disgrace; that he is thoroughly incompetent and that he is running a corrupt government and therefore every Fulani man must be guilty. I don’t understand this logic at all. “But if that is what they want to do and they want to use brute force to kill people and destroy their properties, they should also remember that their own tribes people also live in other parts of the country and that other irresponsible people like them in those parts of the country can also issue such senseless notices, and at the end of the day, it would be nothing but mayhem.”

No fewer than four buildings belonging to herders were razed at Alagolo in Igangan, Ibarapa North local government area of Oyo State during the Friday attack.

Eleven vehicles were also set ablaze allegedly by youths in the area after the visit of Sunday Adeyemo a.k.a. Sunday Igboho to enforce his seven-day quit notice to the herdsmen in the area.

Spokesman for the herders, Alhaji Mustafa Aliu, confirmed the destruction when contacted on the phone.

The Sarkin Fulani, Salihu Abdukadir, who was most hit by the arson, said he had to flee as all his vehicles were burnt.

He said: “As we speak, we are in the bush. Our cars numbering about 11 were burnt. Some of my children sustained injury and we are finding a way to take them to hospital.

“My children have left their houses for the bush. We need the government to help us. Police, Operation Burst and other security agencies were there when they set my house ablaze.”

Also speaking on the development, the Chairman Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN), Alhaji Ibrahim Jiji, described the incident as unfortunate.

  • Banditry: All we ask is don’t turn our land to a killing field

Banditry: All we ask is don’t turn our land to a killing field

    By Femi Orebe

Without a scintilla of doubt Yorubas are the most hospitable ethnic group in this country. However, not  withstanding that, and regardless of  the braggadocio and threats,  we are  not going to lay down to be  routinely kidnapped,  maimed or have our  throats slit by some  miscreants, no matter how seemingly powerful, or connected to government they believe they are. Enough of this nonsense.

With a combination of sophistry, coy adulation and subtle threats,  presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu tried, futilely, this past week to browbeat an elected state governor, that is, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu SAN, of Ondo state, regarding his determined efforts to ensure that, with his  eyes wide open, he was not  going to allow Ondo state be turned to any of Kaduna, Zamfara or Katsina states where daily  kidnappings , maiming and killings have long become a  pastime. Hear him: “Governor Akeredolu, a seasoned lawyer, Senior Advocate of Nigeria and indeed, a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, has fought crime in his state with passion and commitment, greater sensitivity and compassion for the four years he has run its affairs and, in our view, will be the least expected to unilaterally oust thousands of herders who have lived all their lives in the state on account of the infiltration of the forests by criminals”.

“We want to make it clear that kidnapping, banditry and rustling are crimes, no matter the motive or who is involved”. ”But, to define crime from the nameplates, as a number of commentators have erroneously done – which group they belong to, the language they speak, their geographical location or their faith is atavistic and cruel.

“We need to delink terrorism and crimes from ethnicity, geographical origins and religion—to isolate the criminals who use this interchange of arguments to hinder law enforcement efforts as the only way to deal effectively with them”. ,,, ”Beyond law and order, the fight against crime is also a fight for human values which are fundamental to our country.”

Really? How logical is this argument when we know that the same persons slaughtering their own people in Kaduna, Katsina and Zamfara states  are of the same stock with persons we see jumping out of our forests to commit heinous crimes on our highways?

He claimed in his Press statement that the Presidency has been keenly monitoring events in Ondo state. Since when has the presidency been monitoring events in Kaduna, Katsina and Zamfara and to what effect? When Shehu says that “The government of Ondo and all the 35 others across the federation must draw clear lines between the criminals and the law-abiding citizens who must equally be saved from the infiltrators”, was he saying that a power grabbing Federal Government has now devolved sole responsibility for security to the states? Would he like to tell us who the state commissioner of police reports to besides the Inspector – General of Police who, in turn, reports to the President? So how now has it become the responsibility of state governors to “draw clear lines between the criminals and the law-abiding citizens”, as Shehu is gratuitously  prescribing? Hasn’t there been enough said about restructuring Nigeria, without a positive response from Abuja, so that each part of the country  can own responsibility for the security  of its own people, and how are the governors  assisted in doing what Shehu prescribes, when not a single one of the bandits who kidnapped over 300 students in Katsina state and with ‘which’ there were negotiations, was arrested to face the law, all for reasons of consanguinity? Is that how to separate law- abiding citizens from criminals?

And who was Shehu attemoting to deceive when he wrote as follows: ”But, to define crime from the nameplates, as a number of commentators have erroneously done – which group they belong to, the language they speak, their geographical location or their faith is atavistic and cruel. ”We need to delink terrorism and crimes from ethnicity, geographical origins and religion—to isolate the criminals who use this interchange of arguments to hinder law enforcement efforts as the only way to deal effectively with them”?

    Really?

Given Shehu’s premise, it is no surprise that the Attorney- General allegedly claimed that those criminals cannot be tried because there are no case files against them.  Which Divisional Police Officer  will dare arrest these murderous elements, not to talk of writing case  files on them?.

If Garba Shehu truly believes what he wrote, then he should profit from these words of Professor Niyi Osundare: ”The present spate of insecurity in Nigeria is absolutely no surprise to me, given some of the things I have said earlier on in this interview. Our rulers cannot run Nigeria the way it is being run – and the way it has been run for decades – and expect both themselves and the ruled to walk around without danger, and sleep at night with both eyes closed. The wind they sowed in the past has produced the whirlwind that is now dismantling our homesteads. Come to think of it: the dreadful, dreaded Boko Haram didn’t happen all of a sudden. They are the advanced brigades of the army of school-less, shelter-less, food-less, care-less Almajiris recruited and armed by political gladiators who used them as thugs and body-guards, then dumped them as soon as they attained their political goal. Behold the gory repercussions of it all: the tragedies of Chibok, then Dapchi; the sacked towns and villages,  and now,  Nigeria’s flood of Internally Displaced Persons (IDP); the plight of young girls whose lives, whose dreams  were so tragically destroyed;  the personal griefs of the bereaved, dispossessed parents many of whom never survived the heartbreak; the global shame of a country with one of the largest armies in Africa, but so pathetically, so embarrassingly unable to secure its citizens, even the youngest and  most vulnerable among them. As I remember these incidents, my heart bleeds, and I ask: do they know it is Independence Day in Chibok, in Dapchi? I can hear the unspoken words of Leah Sharibu’s parents asking Nigeria’s President: when will our daughter come back home to us?”

Has Shehu not heard Zana Goni, Coordinator of  the Coalition of Northern Elders For Peace and Development say that the “North is under such a siege of insurgents and bandits that it will take over 100 years to recover from the economic destruction if urgent steps are not taken to stop the criminality”. Does defending criminals, as Shehu always does, equate to taking urgent steps against criminality?

Or does he now want to socialise banditry, turning it to a dividend of our own brand of democracy? No, that will be unthinkable in these parts where, all things considered,  we should have no truck with such. That exactly is the message  Akeredolu and his Southwest colleagues were sending to the rest of Nigeria  when they established the Southwest Security system – Amotekun – which some people  are now doing  everything to render hors de combat with the likes of the hugely funded community policing.

The Southwest should not experience the brigandage it currently does because, in contradistinction to what happened in the North, Chief  Obafemi Awolowo had, way back  in 1955, instituted the Free Education programme in the Western Region among whose purposes  was to ensure that the West would never have the  types of rootless characters  described by Osundare above, and nothing would now be worse than having them inflicted on us by others.

When the constitution says any Nigerian can live anywhere in the country it was not saying that they should live a life of  criminality. If that is what  Southerners in the North do, the North should promptly ask them to leave,  having obviously overstayed their welcome.

I always feel ashamed that rather than canvass security of life and property, Shehu always jumps at defending his people’s everyday criminalities. The increasing wave of crimes in the South, in case he pretends not to know, is the result of those massive waves and waves, of all manner of criminals brought down to the South, parked  in trucks like commodities during the lockdown,  with the security people all turning a blind eye even as the federal government had a ban on interstste movements in place. This is  one  reason Nigerians believe that the Northern domination of the Nigerian security apparatti, with Northerners heading literally all of its agencies, is premeditated.

Finally, the governors and numerous others  asking murderous elements to leave their part of the country, are mindful of  the multiplicity of events like the one reported below by the Chairman of Amotekun in Osun state, Colonel K Togun (rtd), informing Nigerians  that the security outfit has seized eight sacks of  assorted guns, poisoned arrows, poisoned cutlasses , knives and amulets from bandits. This, he said, was done with the support of the  Hunters Association of Nigeria, Oyo branch, who knows the terrain very well and have the spiritual power to disarm the bandits. A good government would have commended and celebrate this, as they do the efforts of JTF, but not in Nigeria. However, the  Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), has since done that in a release  by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko and the National Media Affairs Director, Miss Zainab Yusuf,  adding that it is better to have a home-grown institutional mechanism to protect lives and property than to permit the hitherto uncontrollable rampage, and killing of citizens in the Southwest “by a rampaging bunch of determined armed herdsmen, whose origin is mired in politics and deceit.”

2023: Mega party promoters woo Tambuwal, Obiano, Badaru, others

By ‘Dare Odufowokan, Assistant Editor and Ahmed Rufa’i, Dutse

Promoters of the hybrid mega party being plotted to emerge from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are reaching out to more chieftains of the two leading parties for membership.

Governors Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, Willie Obiano of Anambra State, Badaru Abubakar of Jigawa State, and former House of Representatives Speaker Dimeji Bankole are among the prominent figures of the ruling APC and opposition PDP being wooed to come on board.

Former governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, had during the week confirmed plans to float a new political movement in the country.

Okorocha, who currently represents Imo West in the Senate, said that he and other progressive-minded politicians were perfecting plans for a new mega party in response to the silent agitations and complaints across the country against the current state of the nation.

Investigation revealed that Okorocha is working with a group of ex-governors and National Assembly members who are currently chieftains of the APC and PDP. According to very reliable sources, a prominent South-south governor is also being pressured by the Okorocha group to dump the PDP and join the new movement. The said governor has recently expressed his dissatisfaction with the current leadership of the opposition party, accusing its NWC of working against unity in the party.

The Nation also gathered that promoters of the new party, through some prominent Igbo leaders, have reached out to Governor Obiano of Anambra State, urging him to be prepared to move his faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance into the emerging party.

Consequently, Obiano and his political camp are now considering shelving alleged earlier plans to dump APGA and join one of the two leading political parties.

A source familiar with the development said: “With our leaders, political and socio-cultural, unanimous in their belief that power should shift to the south, and with daily indications suggesting that some people have other plans, it is important we are not caught unawares.

“Leaders of the Southeast are convinced that entering the mega party with a party as strong as APGA will give us a good edge in the negotiations. That is why many people are putting pressure on Obiano and others to consider the invitation.”

Another source in Lagos said that leaders of the new movement, at a recent meeting, agreed on moves to reach out to Obiano, Tambuwal, Badaru, Bankole and others.

The source said: “I can tell you that the mega party will not fail to contact all those we consider as assets to the movement.

“It is wrong for anybody to think Okorocha is trying to form a political party for himself alone. Let me tell you that what is coming is a broad based movement that will change the face of Nigerian politics ahead of 2023.

“Majority of those who were part of the failed attempt to form a mega party during the build up to the 2019 general election have been contacted.

“Many are willing to join this new effort. As a group, we are already part of the movement and I can tell you some PDP and APC governors are already talking to us with varying degree of commitments.”

Speaking recently while commissioning some projects in Rivers State, Okorocha who was a guest of Governor Nyesom  Wike, had said the regrouping of ‘good politicians’ was urgently needed to restore public confidence in governance and save the country.

“The movement for a new Nigeria has begun and we must come together, I mean progressive Nigerians, to make the country work,” Okorocha said.

Meanwhile, the invitation of Tambuwal by Governor Badaru Abubakar of Jigawa State to commission some developmental project in the state is generating speculation that the governor is romancing the PDP governor ahead of 2023.

This is just as the newly elected Jigawa State chairman of the PDP, Babansu Ibrahim Gumel, said the party is working to receive members of the ruling APC and governor Muhammadu Badaru Abubakar into its fold soon.

The chairman made the disclosure while speaking to news men in Dutse, the state capital shortly after the inauguration of PDP reconciliation committee at the party secretariat.

Babansu Ibrahim said: “The party constituted a powerful contact and reconstruction committee. Their main task is to meet all people irrespective of political party, region, religion and tribe, and I have the belief the party will bounce back stronger and wrest power in the state and even the country.”

He added: “I’m assuring you that you will see wonder in 2023. People you do not expect will return and others will join PDP.

“Our party is welcoming any interested opposition, including President Muhammad Buhari and Jigawa State governor, Muhammad Abubakar Badaru, and we will treat them with fairness and equality.”

When contacted the special assistant to the governor on media, Auwalu Sankara, said: “I heard this from you for the first time. To my knowledge, there is nothing like this.

“As you know, Badaru Abubakar is the governor of the state; he is for everyone.

“The governor was voted into power not by APC members, but also millions of PDP members. Disregard this speculation as just a rumour without basis.”

Ogun probes alleged attack on farmers by soldiers

    Our Reporter

The Ogun State government on Saturday pledged to probe the alleged flogging of some residents of Yewa South Local Government Area by soldiers at the prompting of herdsmen.

Senator Tolu Odebiyi who represents the area also demanded action from the federal and state governments as well as the military and police authorities on the matter.

Soldiers believed to be from the 35 Artillery Brigade, Abeokuta, allegedly escorted herdsmen to the area after the residents resisted an attempt by the herders to graze their cattle in the community.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Ogun State Governor, Kunle Somorin, said in Abeokuta that government was investigating the matter.

He said anyone found culpable would be dealt with according to the law.

In a separate statement, Senator Odebiyi  asked the Federal Government, military, and the police authorities to probe the alleged harassment of his constituents by soldiers and herdsmen.

Odebiyi’s media office, in a statement on Saturday, said: “It is morally wrong to allow herders to graze on people’s farms unchecked, to the point that law-abiding citizens are rendered hapless.

“This sends a dangerous sign, in addition to undermining the credibility of the government.”

He asked the Brigade Commander of the 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala, Abeokuta, and the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, to urgently look into the matter.
