  • AMANDA AKUNNE: Modelling for Fashion TV was awesome

AMANDA AKUNNE: Modelling for Fashion TV was awesome

Amanda Akunne is a model, beauty queen and the current Miss Aura International. In this interview with Yetunde Oladeinde, she opens up on her experiences, memorable encounters, inspiration, travelling around the world as well as having her mum as her manager.

HOW did you emerge as the queen?

Let me say that among all the 50 delegates from Nigeria, I was picked to represent Nigeria in Turkey. You had different people submitting their details to apply for the pageant.

That was the COVID year, was it easy preparing for a pageant during the period?

I was prepared for it a year before that year. It was actually supposed to hold much earlier in April and then July. They kept shifting it.

How were you feeling with the postponement?

I was sad. I didn’t know if it will still hold because I have never had any opportunity to go for an international pageant before. Then I had my second experience and it was a very huge and I was super glad to be picked for it. When they started postponing it was as if this would let me down.

Just before this I had another international pageant which was in February in India. I was also Miss Talent there. It was when I got back that the whole lockdown started. I tried my best to reach out to people out there. People who didn’t have resources for things like hand sanitizers, face masks and food. I was able to reach out to People and assist them which was quite fulfilling.

The two pageants that you participated in were international pageants; COVID was out there, were you scared at all?

I recall that before I went to India the whole thing had not started at all. So, there was no fear at all. When I came back there was a lockdown and I had never experienced a lockdown in my life. I was nervous, don’t tell me that the world is about to end. You heard people dying here and there. It was happening more outside the country and I was really pretty scared. Even some of the stories were scary, that it came China, Asia and all that. I was scared but I told myself, Amanda you are not going to get this virus. My belief also was that one day we will actually find the cure.

What do you think gave you the edge over the others?

My first pageant was an African pageant, Miss African Golden and I emerged winner in 2019. I was really determined to go for that. Instead of going for Nigerian pageant, I wanted something bigger and better. I also wanted to mingle with other African countries. It was a very great experience and when I went into that. Then I took another step and went for Miss Super Model Glow. It was quite challenging because it was my first international pageant but I was able to achieve what I set out for. I was able to represent Nigeria, not just that. I was able to make Nigeria proud.

One thing that comes to mind is that anytime you travel out, you feel down because of the stories you hear about us.

So, every time I keep telling them about the good part of Nigeria and they usually want to hear more. I also like to inspire other girls out there and give them advice on how to discover their skills and talents. I also tell them from experience that whatever happens in a competition, never give up. Even if you do not win, stay focused.

That is what I always tell the girls. Interestingly, I came late to my second pageant because of flight delay. At that point, our border had not been opened and I was just praying. I almost lost it. You know, we had to do the COVID test before you travel and I didn’t even know where to do the test at first. So, I had to travel to Abuja and I did the first COVID test. They said it was late and I had to do it the day before I travel, then I had to do it again. All I wanted at that point was to travel and a very great experience and when I went into that. Then I took another step and went for Miss Super Model Glow. It was quite challenging because it was my first international pageant but I was able to achieve what I set out for. I was able to represent Nigeria, not just that. I was able to make Nigeria proud.

All I wanted at that point was to travel and compete. So, I was able to travel to Turkey. This time around I traveled alone because my mum couldn’t make it there.

What does it mean having your mum as your manager?

When your mum is your backbone, you will actually succeed. It’s quite a pleasure for me.She has been so supportive from day one.  I started participating in pageants from school.  I went to Chelsea Primary school and then went onto Navy Secondary school.

Is your father in the Navy?

No! But my mum wanted me to join the Navy because when you are in the military, there is some respect. One thing I like is the neatness and the white uniform. Its really attractive and I kept admiring them as a young girl. The cadet is so amazing,  it was fun and my mum felt it will be powerful if a woman is in the military. Apart from that we are all girls in the family, four girls.

What are your memories of school days?

I had to cut my hair which was the rule and it actually took me days and weeks thinking about it. It was the first time I will ever cut my hair, right from childhood. When we go for competitions, the other girls did their hair. Everyone was always looking gorgeous with different hairstyles but we had no hair.

    What made you stand out?

We were African queens.  In addition, people always loved our uniforms. We were actually always winning our competitions, either first or second position. The Navy School is filled with intelligent people and I am proud that I am from that school.

Where did you go after Navy school?

I went to Afe Babalola University and studied International Relations.  It was the first time I was going far away from home. My mum was worried,  she couldn’t even come to my matriculation.  I was sad initially but I just had to do my own thing.

What are some of the things that you share in common with your mum?

My Secrets! It’s with mum and never goes out. Also my relationships and people always say that we look alike.

What plans for the future? Are you thinking of being a female president someday?

Yes. You read my mind. I always see myself as a leader. And sometimes, I see myself as someone who   wants to help the Nation.  I want us to be on top. I want us to be great and powerful.  I also realise that anytime I am out there people always look up to mme.I mentor mostly young girls, they usually ask a number of questions that inspires me.

Tell us about some of the memorable moments?

After the pageant, I got a contract on Fashion TV, Turkey and I was modelling for them. They also have a pageant called Miss Fashion TV and they are inviting me to another pageant soon. Hopefully, I will make Nigeria Proud again. While I was working with them, we had a house where I stayed with other models to learn more and associate with other girls. There were so many lessons to learn and it was a real learning curve for me. Along the line, I had a group of younger girls who were being bullied by the older ones. I told them to be strong, outspoken and never allow anyone to look down on them. It worked and everyone was happy.

  • The day after – three vignettes of America without Trump in the White House

The day after – three vignettes of America without Trump in the White House

    Biodun Jeyifo

THE euphoria, the feeling of liberation from dread and ennui

Even though Non-Trump and Anti-Trump Americans knew that this day would come, still the euphoria of Trump’s departure from the presidency and the White House, only one day after the event, is as loud and boisterous as it also pristine and ineffable. For the boisterousness, Ray Charles’s classic hit song, “Hit the Road, Jack” has suddenly become popular again and it has been recycled in diverse cultural locations, from the late-night TV hosts to new YouTube postings on the Internet. “Hit the road Jack/Don’t come back no more, no more/Hit the road Jack/Don’t come back no more! For the pristine and ineffable intimations that Trump has indeed gone, there is the overwhelmingly deafening silence of Trump’s absence from virtually all the social, cultural and media airwaves of the country. It is like air, toxic and noxious air, going out of a room in which a pervasive gas leak had held unchallenged and unchallengeable dominion. That “room” was virtually every square, every inch of America, from the two huge coastal strips of the West and the East to the vastness of the hinterland.

Here are snippets of my own personal observations, my own testimony, of this ineffable euphoria of life without the overwhelming pervasiveness of Trump in daily life in America in the last four years. The metaphor of addiction comes to mind here, as long as “addiction” in this case is a substance you are not voluntarily imbibing but is being forced down your throat or into your veins. I became addicted to Trump and Trumpism as part of the fare of daily life while hating every minute, every second of the addiction. It is an understatement to say that Trump dominated the American or even world news cycle. He grabbed hold of it and made it a vast, unrelenting projection of his desires, his lies, his megalomania, his hatreds, his phobias. Because he was such a danger, you could not ignore him, as much as you wanted to or even tried to now and then. And now, one day after his departure from the White House he is almost completely absent from the news cycle! He has not completely vanished but the large, oversize space he used to occupy has shrunken to the mini size expanse of a thimble’s infinitesimally shallow depth.

I think here of a short but powerful poem by Bertolt Brecht, the German poet and dramatist who was one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. In the poem, Brecht graphically describes the mask of an Asian demon, every line and curve of the terrifying visage captured in arresting detail. As you go over the poem and become almost overpowered by the graphic force of the poet’s description of the visage of the demon, you begin to wonder what the poet’s purpose is in investing so much evocative power to the visage of the demon. Then you come to the last line of the poem and Brecht pays ironic homage to the effort it must take the demon to fear and hate humans and humanity so much, this being the cause of the fearsome visage of the demon. I think of this poem and I wonder, in great alarm: was the visage of my inner self, of all our inner selves, transmogrified by Trump and Trumpism into a mask of hate and fear (of Trump) like that on the visage of the demon in Brecht’s poem?

Racism, misogyny and xenophobia without Trump in the White House

It is only one day after Trump’s departure from the White House and already we seem to be in a new order, a new dispensation on race, gender and immigrant status in American political history! A woman, Kamala Harris, is now the Vice President of America, the first woman to ever occupy that post that is commonly said to be only a heartbeat away from the presidency. Moreover, Harris is also an African American and an Asian American, the very first of these communities to occupy this exalted position. In Addition to this, Biden’s cabinet is the most diverse in terms of race, gender, ethnicity and sexuality since the first American cabinet instituted by George Washington in 1789. What is more, Biden’s cabinet is arguably made up of one of the most talented group of women and men of any president in modern American history. Thus, it is indisputable that the “revolution” that Biden has started through the combination of diversity and talent will have reverberations in the years and decades ahead that we can only dimly perceive now. All this already apparent only one day since Trump left the White House!

We must set these breakthroughs of Biden on race, gender, ethnicity and immigrant status against the immediately preceding record of Trump as the most racist and xenophobic American president of all time. Before him there were the 7th and 28th presidents, Andrew Jackson and Woodrow Wilson respectively, whose racist beliefs and actions were not only very open and blatant but were also ideological, more so than any other American presidents. That is, until the presidency of Donald Trump. Simply stated, no American president has been as openly sanguine about White supremacy and White nationalism as has Donald Trump, the insurrection of Wednesday, January 6, 2021 being the only time in American history that the forces of White supremacy have ever stormed the Capitol in order to terminate the American multiracial and multicultural liberal-democratic order.

It is still too early to say how far and what forms Biden’s presidency will make diversity and inclusion become permanent and valued aspects of democratic governance in America. But already, Biden has set in motion what will almost certainly be a crucial inflection of democracy in America: from now on, it will be multiracial and multicultural or it will not be democratic at all. This is actually true of most of the nation-states of the world at the present time since only a few countries in the modern world correspond to the prototype of the mono-ethnic, monolingual Greek polis of ancient antiquity. If this was the birthplace of democracy, it is time to recall that its “democracy” also excluded slaves, women and immigrants. This might seem to be Trumpian in essence but that is not the case. Biden, not Trump, is the true bearer and probable reinventor of the Greek democratic paradigm if only because throughout its existence, ancient Greek democracy struggled with authoritarian and fascist forces at home and abroad.

The pandemic, one day after Trump’s departure from the White House.

Today, like yesterday when Trump was still in the White House, more than four thousand Americans died of the Covid-19 pandemic. And it is almost certain that another four thousand will die tomorrow. This is by far the highest rate of mortality from the pandemic in the world. Thus, this seems to be about the most apparent – and sobering – manifestation of a continuity between the Trump and Biden “eras”. But that is not the case at all and there possibly couldn’t be a greater distance between Trump and Biden on the issue of the pandemic and its devastating impact on America and Americans. And on this first day of his presidency, Biden has given telling indication of the yawning gap between him and Trump regarding the challenge that the pandemic poses to America and the world. In these reflections, I will touch on two manifestations of this difference, one ritual and symbolic, the other programmatic and practical. Let us deal with the ritual and symbolic first.

Surely, it has to be deeply portentous that the very first thing, the very first public act that Biden enacted as president was a national rite of mourning for the more than 400,000 (four hundred thousand) Americans who have died from the pandemic. The ritual was broadcast on all media of communication and for several hours was uninterrupted by commercial breaks, “breaking news” and/or other diversions or entertainment. All cultures of the world, past and present, reserve a special place for the rites of mourning in the communal or national social calendar. The simple but profound truth behind this pervasive cultural practice is this: if you do not or will not mourn the dead, then you do not or will not respect and cherish the living. No ruler in the contemporary world is more illustrative of this truism than Donald Trump. Thus, just as it seems to most Americans that mourning the dead of the pandemic is the most natural thing in the world for Biden to do, it would have greatly surprised Americans for Trump to have ordered a ritual of mourning for the victims of the pandemic.

The programmatic or practical aspect of Biden’s break from Trump and his era is as great, as crucial as the difference between the two men on ritual and symbolic responses to the devastating impact of the pandemic. This is because arguably, Trump has been the most incompetent and dysfunctional American president in modern times and nowhere was this more expressed than in his response – indeed a nonresponse – to the pandemic. At the height of the first massive tidal wave of the pandemic, he stolidly and mulishly declared that the virus was a hoax and at any rate would soon vanish, go away. As the numbers of the dead increased relentlessly, he was more concerned about the impact of the deaths on the stock market. Above all else, even as thousands of Americans died from the pandemic, Trump encouraged his followers to see his ignorant and bizarre notions about the virus and how to treat it as more important, more valuable than the opinions of and data collected by medical scientists and practicing public health officials. And finally, in the last three months of his presidency, he almost completely stopped giving any attention, any urgency to the pandemic and its ravages.

One day into the life of his presidency, only one day, and Biden has swung into action on all the battle fronts of the war against the ravages of the virus: masking, social distancing, testing, ramping up provision of equipment and materiel for the health workers in the frontline of the response to the pandemic and financial relief for millions of Americans in utter ruin from the economic impact of the pandemic. Vaccine production and distribution under Trump were palpably so ineffectual as to have retarded constant and reliable supply of scientific and technological means of curbing the spread of the virus. But lo and behold, Biden today has – at last! – invoked the Defence Production Act so as to considerably expand the production and distribution of vaccines. This Act, by the way, is usually invoked and activated by a sitting American president during war times. Why did Trump not invoke this Act? Believe it or believe it not, he said it would disrupt market regulation of the production and distribution of hospital equipment and materiel! With his invocation and effectuation of this Defense Production Act, Biden has put it on notice to America and the world that the battle is now joined irreversibly with the pandemic. Nothing, nothing at all, can mark him as different from Trump as this particular intervention. This is as much a matter of hope and faith as it also a matter of completely realistic and calculating deployment of all that America and the world have to overcome the dread of the pandemic. Yes, it is only Biden’s first day after the departure of Trump. But its portents are good and hopeful if only because, like the two other themes I have explored in this piece, Biden is banking on the belief that his success will be every American’s success, the success of every denizen of the planet.

    Postscript

If Biden succeeds in these and other projects of his presidency, this will be recorded as one of the most important “one day”  turning point in the history of our epoch. If he fails – perish the thought! – well, the day will be forgotten – as many other days of great changes in the history of our species have been forgotten…

  • Foreign investors cannot make Ajaokuta Steel Complex work – Dr. Kamoru Yusuf

Foreign investors cannot make Ajaokuta Steel Complex work – Dr. Kamoru Yusuf

In this interview with journalists, the Chairman Basic Metal, Iron and Steel and Fabricated Metal Products sector of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Dr. Kamoru Yusuf, speaks on the impending issues affecting the sector especially the ongoing process to resuscitate Ajaokuta Steel Rolling Complex by the Federal Government.

Your take on the ongoing process to resuscitate Ajaokuta Steel Complex

I have taken my time to study and assessed the Federal Government’s efforts to resuscitate Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited and my conclusion is that it may be difficult for any foreign investor(s) to successfully operate Ajaokuta Steel Complex without the full support of the local industry operators.

As you can see that Steel business is my core area of specialization which has also led us to the acquisition of our new steel factory complex here in Igbafa, Village, Sagamu, Ogun State which is now KAM Steel Integrated Company, Sagamu-Plant for national interest. There is need to firstly commend the efforts President and Commander-in-Chief of Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, and the Honourable Minister for Mines and Steel Development, Arc. Olamilekan Adegibte for their astuteness and determination to resolve the age-long problem and make the Ajaokuta Steel Complex a dream that comes to reality in an effort to industrialize the country.

The drive to revive Ajaokuta Steel Complex is to set the stage for Nigeria as the leading industrial nation in the continent as earlier envisioned, which is being driven through the development of the Steel sector under the able leadership of the Honourable Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Arc. Olamilekan Adegbite; who has demonstrated passion and capability in promoting the steel sector in Nigeria, through his resolve that there is “the need for the Federal Government to declare Iron and Steel as National Products for Rapid Economic Growth.

The process of resuscitating Ajaokuta Steel Company which is our nation’s heritage was not properly structured.  What should have been done, was to consult with owners of existing steel plants who would have given clearer narrations of the issues in the industry.  But this important aspect was jettisoned by the Presidential Committee constituted by the Federal Government on Ajaokuta.  However, some of the indigenous stakeholders had since drew the attention of Government to this gap.

On the proposed negotiation with foreigners

No foreign investors can bring Ajaokuta Steel Company back to operation. What the Federal Government needs to do is to adopt the model used by the Peoples of Republic of China which later transformed the country’s Steel industry within 25 years which led to massive development of the industrial sector in China.

What the Chinese Government did was to indigenize one of the country’s major industries – the Iron and Steel, into the hands of their people with the Government holding only 25% interest while local investors were allowed to own 75% stake. This created opportunities for the local investors and ensured that the wealth remained within the country-China, without repatriation of capital as well as dividends; thereby leading to development of local skills and other multiplier effects that finally resulted in what the world is witnessing today as the industrial explosion in China.

I urge Nigerian government to redirect its policy on the industry because haven expended close to 40 years experimenting a particular model without result, it should be clear and in fact obvious that the commercial interest of the offshore investors does not match the developmental interest of the Government of Nigeria as well as the industrial aspiration of her citizens.

With my over 30 years’ experience in the iron and steel business, I can confidently provide a workable template, which of course could also show that no foreign investor can fix Ajaokuta Steel Company.

Any attempt to invite foreign investor(s) to resuscitate the Ajaokuta Steel Company will result in the said foreign interest depriving us of our  national heritage; as any proceed realized from the sales, will be repatriated by such interests to their countries and would consequently have negative effects on Government’s policy of backward integration and the corresponding objective of conserving the scarce foreign exchange with dare consequences on the current and future well-being of our economy.

Therefore, it is only indigenous investors that can make it happen so that the proceed can remain here in Nigeria and we can re-invest this into the economy. This we have all seen, was the case in the cement industry and with Nigeria now taking another giant stride in refinery and petrochemicals.

Developed nations of the world are always at the forefront of periodic review and monitoring of progress and challenges facing the Iron and Steel sector; by mandating their financial institutions to provide adequate support to the industry”.

Challenges facing Iron and Steel Sector

For more than two decades, government had not paid the desired attention to the steel sector which is the primary basis for industrial growth and development of any nation.

Steel sector plays similar role as that of Cement, Sugar, fertilizer and Petrochemical industries, all of which can provide the needed tripod-support for the development of other light industries in the country.  The incremental and progressive results being witnessed by them was the outcome of the success story of the indigenous players in the cement industry over the past 9 years and with reduced stake from the offshore investors.  The best model, is to indigenize and empower Nigerians and ensure that the strategy as encapsulated in the Nigeria Industrialization Revolution Plan (NIRP), creates avenues for whosoever wishes to partner with the local giants who have verifiable track record in the industry to do so.

Iron and steel sector is suffering as a result of what is happening to Ajaokuta Steel Company. For an industry that is driven by committed and persevering investors who are putting national interest as paramount in their business decisions, what government needs to do in the immediate circumstance is to mandate commercial banks and Development banks through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to focus and direct attention to giving adequate support to the steel industry due to the capital-intensive nature of the business.

    Expectations from financial institutions

Despite CBN’s announcement on diversification and creating of a window for Real Sector Support Fund (RSSF), some of the commercial banks are not willing to support genuine industrialists, probably due to lack of key project appraisal management skills.

We expect that Bank of Industry (BoI), which is created to support industrialization in Nigeria should have intervened but it seems the Bank have changed its windows of operations, which Central Bank needs look into.  One wonders what was the rationale behind the current aloofness of BoI which has the expertise of project appraisal management but have decided to deviate from its initial mandate by not getting involve directly in project financing anymore except through the commercial banks by requesting for bank guarantees.

The ensuing confusion is that commercial banks are no longer comfortable with this arrangement as they believe BOI is not sharing the risk with them and hence, the consequent abandonment of the needed support from BOI, which some real sector operators believed has created and classed them into financial orphans, with no ‘care-giver’ in the financial market!

The current situation where most of the Nigerian banks showed little or no interest in project development industry due to absence of project underwriting insurance company, thereby creating preference and appetite for funding trading, may take us nowhere but rather, will continuously  discount our developmental progression as our resolve to play in heavy industrial arena without capital investments, will perpetually confine us to the league of ‘industrial spectator rather than being an active player’.

Nigerian Economy and the African Continental Free Trade Area

The only way Nigeria can participate successfully in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and successfully compete among countries in the continent is to develop our giant industries. We can look at China, which always underwrite their capital projects under Sinosure (China Credit Insurance Corporation).

The Federal Government should also borrow a leaf from other developed nations as well as some African countries; by creating platforms for Credit Insurance Underwriters in order to reduce the huge risks involved in capital projects. Government also needs to create more funding windows and other support infrastructure to elicit rapid industrial development.

There cannot be significant growth in the sector without the intervention of the Federal Government where and when necessary.  Government should be the driving force behind the steel industry, which has the capacity and potential to resolving part of our social unrest by getting thousands of unemployed youths off the streets through direct and indirect job opportunities.”

Your advice to the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government

Once again, I commend our amiable President his versatile economic team for salvaging our economy by fighting corruption, crimes and criminality as well as creating more windows of rapid economic recovery. To our industrial giants led by our mentor and astute industrialist, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, I want to commend you for setting a pace for successful business operation in our country and African continent at large.

Meanwhile, one way that could be easily employed is for the Government to urgently channel the Comprehensive Import Supervisory Scheme, (CISS) charges paid to the Nigeria Customs Service, (NCS) over the years, to providing bailout and support to the steel sector. “Such money should be utilized to drive the industrial revolution process that will galvanize national industrial development.

There will be no reason for the Government to borrow money to bring Ajaokuta back to life. We have the resources as a nation and we also have expertise who can make it work.  We don’t need foreign investors to do it. Ajaokuta can be back again to produce machines that are needed by other steel industries in their production processes.

You will agree with me that with the gigantic size of Ajaokuta, the complex should not focus on the middle-steel production, which are massively available around Nigeria and West Africa.  Rather, it should focus on the configuration of a high class production of steel products such as Slab Caster, Hot Rolled Coils and Plates, and Foundry for the production of the required machinery and tools in the country, since 50 percent requirement for these high-class configuration are already available in Ajaokuta. Although, we still welcome more opinions and contributions towards developing our sector for better performance to the benefit of our dear country and humanity at large via opinion@nigeriansteelindustries.com.

Sunday Igboho: Igangan streets deserted as Oro festival peaks

    By Yinka Adeniran, Ibadan

There is an uneasy calm in Igangan, Ibarapa North local government area of Oyo state.

The development is in compliance with the ongoing Oro Festival, which started about seven days ago in the town.

According to the convener, Igangan Development Advocates (IDA), Oladokun Oladiran, Saturday is the grand finale of the festival, which requires everybody in the town to stay indoors.

The entire streets across the communities were entirely deserted.

When asked if the situation was as a result of fear of attacks by the residents following the crisis that erupted after the departure of Yoruba activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly called Sunday Igboho, who stormed the town on Friday, the IDA convener said the culture of staying indoors is during the festival is not peculiar to the residents but also visitors.

Oladiran said “Things are quiet in Igangan as Oro festival curfew is now ongoing.

“It’s been on for some days now. Today (Saturday) is ‘Ahamo’, meaning indoor.

“All must be indoors. It has been on since the last seven days but today (Saturday) is the peak.

“All women will be indoors until like 12 tomorrow (Sunday).”

However, when asked about the mood of the people of the town following the visit of Ighoho, the IDA convener lauded the activist calling for extra vigilance and redefined strategic security information in Igangan and Ibarapaland as a whole.

He said the visit has helped to rekindle the hope of freedom among indigenes, adding that no family could boast of unscathed life in the hand of the ever-terrorizing herders.

He accused the Seriki Fulanis, Alhaji Abdulkadir Saliu, of always shielding those he described as criminal elements terrorising the town.

He said: “Year in year, year out, several years under the continuous woes of herdsmen banditry, Igangan’s hope of regaining their peace kept being dimmed until Friday, January 21, 2021 when the whole of Ibarapa land suddenly went agog with renewed strength of reclaiming their land.

“The long-awaited, sought and longed for ray of hope for liberation glimmered in the form of Chief Sunday Adeyemo Igboho.

“Such a massive uproar might never have attended any saga in recent Ibarapa history.

“It was not surprising, for not a single household in Ibarapa North-West LCDA could boast of unscathed life in the hand of the ever-terrorizing herders.

“For several years, farm plundering was their full time business which grew audaciously in leaps and bounds even as the Seriki Saliu ensured that no Fulani was prosecuted even for offenses they were caught pants down perpetrating.

“With no disciplinary measures ever meted out to the now reverential herdsmen, their audacity has leaped in bounds from just grazing upon the sweats of Ibarapa farmers to maiming and lynching any farmer who dare raise a voice in deference to their destructive resolve.

“And as if it would never end, the era of heart-numbing fear that trickled into the very marrow of Igangan started years ago.

“Notorious Fulani criminals increased spates of kidnappings and bloodshed upon the whole of Ibarapaland.”

  • Engaging grace for supernatural flight!

    Engaging grace for supernatural flight!

    By Bishop Taiwo Akinola

So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy ~ Romans 9:16.

    Introduction:

You belong to a well-defined place in life. You’re not a product of your circumstances, you were separated from your mother’s womb for God’s glory. However, it is when your destiny truly engages an escape velocity that it can soar freely to accomplish the purpose(s) for which you were born. And, it is then and only then that you can begin to fly supernaturally.

In this regard, the God-factor in your race of life is of paramount importance. The God-factor is what we call “g-race”. Certainly, a new level of grace will be required for another on-time supernatural flight (Acts 4:31-33).

Please, never ascribe to luck or even hard-work what only the grace of God can procure. Every excelling greatness and noble accomplishment on earth are products of God’s grace. Joyous experiences of supernatural flight can only be by the power of the Holy Spirit (Zechariah 4:6). And, once you receive the tangible grace of God, you become approved to win and begin to cruise unhindered on your pathway to the top.

Most amazingly, God loves to give the rich benefits of His grace even to undeserving people, without demanding any compensation in return. Indeed, God’s grace is both un-earnable and un-repayable.

    What Is Grace?

Grace is the tangible and undeniable hand of God on a man’s life and in all his affairs (Titus 2:11). God’s grace practically reflects in the lives of its carriers. Paul testified, “I am what I am by the grace of God” (1 Corinthians 15:10).

Grace is a divine bestowal that any believer can take advantage of in order to cruise through the obstacles of life. Grace is God’s ability in man’s inability, provoking a new level of glory and bringing God’s solution for man’s frustration and failure.

It doesn’t matter how people see you. What really matters is how God sees you, and what level of His grace you have accessed. Your failings cannot make you a failure when God’s grace is in the picture.

Please note that grace does jump upon the recipients only by the anointing of the Holy Spirit, who breaks yokes of stagnation and every form of limitations in life. Without the help of the Holy Spirit, you cannot maintain the flow of grace in your life because every channel through which God’s grace flows requires the help of the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 1:7).

What Happens When Grace Enables You?

Grace is a major catalyst for supernatural performance. No matter how impossible things may appear to be, there shall be a performance for the man who has contacted God’s superlative grace.

When grace locates you, it compels wondrous things to happen in style in your life, and you naturally become a man that cannot be ignored. You become too loaded to fail and too relevant to be sidelined. You also break through against all odds to fulfill your mission on the earth.

God’s grace enables your success in any environment you find yourself. It is one of the vital mysteries that provoke supernatural breakthroughs on earth.

Your breakthrough does not lie in your strength (1 Samuel 2:9), hard work (Psalm 127:1-2), or mental smartness (Ecclesiastes 9:11; John 3:27; Romans 9:16). Your breakthrough lies in the grace of God, because it is His grace that makes all the difference in any life.

Nothing in life makes great like grace. You can never outgrow the grace of God, and there is no substitute for it on your supernatural flight to greatness. God said to Abraham, “I will make of thee a great nation…” (Genesis 12:2). Certainly, a day of favor is much more blissful than a thousand years of labor. I pray that, by grace, your destiny will start making a positive headway, in Jesus’ Name.

    Principles that Invigorate Grace

We are great because God has made us great in Christ Jesus. However, we need to walk in some principles to ensure we are always what God wants us to be. And, the following will lubricate your covenant position with God, any day!

The first principle that invigorates grace is the principle of our inheritance in Christ. Our new birth has engrafted onto us highflier status because of the supernatural life of God in us through Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:17-20). And, we are partakers of the magnificent loftiness that is in Christ (Romans 8:17). That’s the platform from where God’s grace takes us on. Alleluia!

Next to this is a lifestyle of righteousness and kingdom mindedness (Psalms 5:12; Ps.102:13-14). When God sees that you’re all out to glorify Him, He will imbue you with greater grace upon the earth.

Besides, we must understand that honor precedes supernatural flight. When a man honours and loves the Lord, God will in turn honour him. Solomon honored God and he took his flight unto greatness (1 Kings 3:3; 11-12). God promoted him to such a high towering greatness that the Queen of Sheba, seeing him, almost lost her breath (1 Kings 10:4-5).

Furthermore, your gifts and seed offerings are like miracle lifts for those who wish to take their flight unto higher heights of glory, honour and accomplishment on earth (Psalms 45:12). Isaac sowed and reaped a hundred fold and he became exceedingly great until he was envied by his peers (Genesis 26:12-14).

Most certainly, we keep growing and waxing greater in grace for supernatural flight when we respect the principle of sowing: tithing, offerings, seeds of sacrifices, giving to the poor, giving our time and talents.

However, we must beware of anti-grace viruses and forces that are out to frustrate and to corrupt the grace of God in our lives. Where they go unchecked, they can cause grace to fail or, somehow, become frustrated (Galatians 2:21; Hebrews 12:15).

You don’t have to wait for grace to fail or become frustrated in your life; you should grow and mature in grace (2 Peter 3:18). You must ruthlessly deal with the viruses and the negative forces of sin, pride, prayerlessness,  ignorance, and lukewarmness, keeping them out of your life and even go forward to grow in grace.

Friends, it is the grace of God that articulates and defines greatness. When grace grows in your life, your accomplishments equally grow in leaps and bounds, soaring unto lofty places. This underscores the importance of guarding and enabling growth of God’s grace upon our lives, which is most secure for those who are saved in Christ Jesus.

Please open the door of your heart to Christ, today. Repent, accept Jesus Christ as your Saviour, be saved and enjoy a secure grace for supernatural flight. Happy Sunday!

  • What men and women think after sex (2)

What men and women think after sex (2)

    By Funmi Akingbade

Last week we started an extensive thought-provoking discussion: we started enumerating what actually goes on in the minds of partners shortly after sex.

Many partners in relationships are eager to travel down memory lane with their loved ones immediately after sex. This is based on the quest to know whether their partners professed love and commitment is actually a reality or a mirage.

Dating partners or intending couples are not left out either. As a matter of fact, the quest to know what is in the after thoughts of their partner’s mind matters to them.  The urge to know what the guy/girl is thinking shortly after sex has been a searchlight to the significance of such relationship. It has helped lots of ‘about to be married’ partners make decisions about the relationship they are involved in. It has even helped prevent and avert a potentially doomed marriage.

When a guy is only interested in a sexual intimacy and not a committed relationship, one cardinal signal is his thought shortly after sex – especially in a one night stand situation. Once he is done with all of ‘that’ the next thing he does is stare at the ceiling with thoughts raging in his mind about when the right time to say goodbye is.

Or which is the right way to stop seeing the girl or how can he get such free sexual favour over and again without been trapped. He is mostly concerned about the right time that would make her feel less bad. Sometimes, certain guys might not really want to end things if they believe the girl in question is willing to freely give sexual favours; they play along till they are ready to change sex partners.

At this crucial time it important for the girl to cunningly and shrewdly ask in a very funny way what the guy is actually thinking about. When he is caught unaware with such questions his reaction, facial expression, body movement and verbal expression or remark will definitely give him away.

However, some guys are so smart and could outwit the girl and pretend they are in a relationship for real. Close observation is needed here. So, it is important for the lady to watch out for some unconscious remarks, jokes, expression, movement and telephone conversations.

Some other guys who are indecisive may be ready for commitment and marriage may be wondering what step they should be taking next? Should he be calling her up to ask for another date? Should he be making conversations with her on a daily basis? Should he make his intention of commitment to her known? Can sex be the true measure of her commitment? How should he behave with her now that they have had quenched their physical thirst?

At this stage a girl in love should try and start a sincere soul searching conversation with him so as to be able to measure the level of his commitment. Many times girls make the mistake of thinking that sexual relationship prior to marital commitment makes the relationship solid. I do not think so because there may be nothing left to the imagination any  more.

Sexual encounters between the married seal the bond of intimacy more than imagined, but such encounters between singles ‘intending to get married’ sours the union. Some relate tales of endangered health, betrayed trust. Sex is never a good measure of commitment in a relationship. Rather than help reveal the true love that should exist between dating lovers, it most times mars their sense of judgment.

Sex is a means to an end and not an end itself. So it must be handled with every atom of carefulness; it must never be put up as bait for a good relationship.

The primary test of commitment is to look out for real love because everyone wants to loved and be loved. Even in a marriage relationship great sex life between husband and wife does not connote or mean a great marriage, but rather an established loving companionship.

While dating as singles don’t jump the process and make sex a yardstick for a good relationship. It is better not to be involved than be in one where sex is only the activity of the day. Singles who are dating must be convinced that the relationship is by choice and not by force.

Any partner that forcefully demands sex and tenders such as condition for commitment is an abusive partner. Dating relationship is about friendship and not just sexual passion. When a partner in a relationship does not see reason for complete commitment he or she is not expected to be in that relationship.

Marriage is not for girls and boys because they always want opportunity without responsibilities. And when talking about responsibilities age is irrelevant when it comes to maturity, because growing up is not the same thing as growing old and mature.

There is more at stake in a relationship than just two people trying to meet one another sexual needs all the time. It is far more complex than that. Your mature look at things and ability to withheld immediate gratification is what qualifies you for such. So when next time as a single in a dating relationship you’re trying to imagine the thoughts of your partner, first ask yourself if the relationship is worth the sexual sacrifices or not.

I love to conclude by asking if you are worried about your sexual health. If you are experiencing a diminished libido, or mid-life sexual crisis, loss of erection, premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, or weak erection, or you can’t last long in sex as desired, or you are experiencing problem with sperm cells, you are not far from total freedom. Just email or give me a call.

    QUESTION ONE

My wife gave birth to a set of twins five years ago after which she developed these horrifying varicose veins that get enlarged year in year out. The moment I look at her legs and arms I get irritated and nauseated. It so repulsive I have tried to make her wear stockings and the likes yet the sight of it does not make me ask her for sex. It appears as if earthworms are crawling all over her. We have tried all we can and she’s afraid of surgery. Are there natural ways to handle this?

Running away from her will make things worse. You need to know that healthy veins carry blood to the heart through a series of one-way valves. These valves allow blood to flow in the right direction from superficial veins to deeper veins and to the heart. The vessels are surrounded by muscles which contract and help pump blood to the heart. Normally the veins have a one-way valve to prevent backflow. However, defective valves allow blood to flow backward and pool inside the vein. As blood pools within the vein, pressure builds and the vessel wall weakens. As a result, the vein tends to bulge and twist. Depending on the size of the blood vessel and extent of swelling, the result is a varicose vein. They can be spider like or larger blood vessels that have become swollen and twisted. This problem is common in people with jobs that keep them on their feet, such as nurses and teachers. Sometimes it may be due to aging, obesity, pregnancy, trauma, or surgery to the leg and some other times it may be hereditary; mostly women are more victims than men.

Varicose veins could actually be an eyesore and also painful for the victim, but there are natural remedies, beside using support stockings that help improve circulation and relieve pain and discomfort in the legs. Losing weight and walking regularly can ease the symptoms. Eating a low-salt diet to reduce water retention is very important. Whenever possible, propping up the legs with a pillow or recliner, so they rest at or above the level of the heart reduce the effect totally.

Getting plenty of exercise is one of the best ways to keep weight under control and leg muscles toned, so blood will flow freely. Stretching your leg muscles often improves circulation and whenever she is pregnant again remind her to sleep on her left side rather than her back.

    QUESTION TWO

I am always having toilet disease which always makes me have pain during sex, especially when am aroused. It is so painful and because of the frequent re-occurrences I do not use public toilet whatsoever – even outside the country. Still I must use some medications for this condition every week. What can I do?

Sometimes all you need to do is understand your vulva make up and how to naturally care for it. Vulva is the name applied to the female external genitals as a whole. As a woman becomes aroused the entire vulva becomes engorged with blood, resulting in swelling and darkening of the external genitals. The result of this swelling is much like a water bed, touching any place causes ripples of sensation throughout the whole area. But when it painful due to toilet disease you may lose sensitivity. So try and desist from using anti-bacterial soaps or body washes in that area. This is because anti-bacterial soaps can kill the good bacteria in that part of the body and can open you up to infections. Washing with warm water alone is enough. If you must wash with soap, then use very mild soap and make sure you rinse very thoroughly to get rid of any traces of soap.  Avoid douching. This is the process of forcing water or other liquid into the vaginal cavity to flush away vaginal discharge. This actually causes more harm than good and so should be avoided. After using the toilet, always wipe from front to back, never from back to front. This is so you don’t introduce harmful bacteria from the anus to the vulva area. If you play around with food or drinks in that area during sex, you might want to stop. This is because sugar found in these foods or drinks can cause irritations down there so avoid such. Then always wear panties with cotton lining to allow vulva breath and prevent dampness. This means you have to pay more attention to the type of panties you buy. Make sure its cotton.

     QUESTION THREE

    Can virgins catch STDs?

Yes, they can. Many STDs spread through any type of sexual activity, including skin-to-skin contact and oral sex. This is especially true of STDs that produce genital lesions or sores.

    QUESTION FOUR

I was recently sent packing when my husband discovered that it was my breast pictures I sent to his Blackberry smart phone. It’s embarrassing for me to tell his family that he sent me out of the home for this reason. Do you have a way out for me?

Calm down, there is always a way out. I think you should do all you can to get his forgiveness; plead, beg and send people you think he holds in high esteem to him to reason with him. Make sure you do not defend yourself for any reason, just plead guilty. I am sure it’s a matter of time before he calls you back after he has cooled off. Sometimes in the bid to do something sexy and crazy we may go overboard. That is we should think twice before applying some of the sexual tricks we read or hear about before applying it in our marriage bed. It’s nice to act and look sexy. It’s nice to be proactive and innovative, but first and foremost you must understudy your partner, spouse or mate closely before applying some of these sexual tricks because it’s different strokes for different folks. We should never forget that the beliefs and cultural background of your spouse could affect their sexuality.

  • Time for Governor Bello to end COVID-19 fantasies

Time for Governor Bello to end COVID-19 fantasies

    By Vincent Akanmode

My extended family was thrown into mourning last week with the death of a beloved member after she was denied admission at the National Hospital, Gwagwalada, Abuja. She had left her base in one of the states in the Northeast to attend the burial of her younger sister in Kogi State only to start complaining of tiredness after the obsequies were completed. She was promptly taken to a mission hospital in the community where she was attended to and discharged the following day.

However, the sickness relapsed before she left the community for her base in the north, prompting her being taken to Lokoja, Kogi State capital, where her daughter ( a pharmacist) and the daughter’s husband (a medical doctor) are based, in the belief that she was in safe hands with the two professionals. The couple wasted no time taking her to the Federal Medical Centre in Lokoja, but as fate would have it, her health deteriorated and she fell into coma less than 24 hours after she was admitted.

Seeing that her condition did not improve after almost one week at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital, her husband decided that she should be taken to the National Hospital in Gwagwalada. But on getting to Gwagwalada, hospital officials said they would not touch her even with a six-inch pole because her COVID-19 status was not known, having been brought in from a state that was not testing for the pandemic because the governor, Yahaya Bello, insists that there is no such thing as Coronavirus in the state. She was then taken to a hospital run by the Catholic Church where she gave up the ghost even before doctors could attend to her.

The foregoing is an example of the burden the state bears on account of Governor Bello’s insistence that reports of massive deaths from COVID-19 in Nigeria and other parts of the world are nothing but tales by moonlight. In Nigeria, the ravaging virus is believed to have infected no fewer than 116,000 people and claimed more than 1,485 lives across the states of the federation, but Governor Bello insists that if by any chance the virus exists, it is incapable of penetrating Kogi, the state with the highest number of boundaries.

Carved from Kwara and Benue states by the Babangida administration in 1991, the North-Central state, whose capital, Lokoja, is at the confluence of Rivers Niger and Benue, shares boundaries with Nassarawa, Benue, Enugu, Anambra, Delta, Ondo, Ekiti, Kwara and Niger. Each of the aforementioned states have had their fair share of Coronavirus infection, but Governor Bello says the virus is yet to gain access to his state in spite of daily interactions between the residents of the state and those of the nine others surrounding it.

While the federal government and states like Lagos and Ogun are running from pillar to post in search of ways to stem the spread of the virus, Governor Bello has been at best derisive in his response to the pandemic, deceived probably by the sound of the name of his state to think that the residents are immune to any disease.   ”NCDC (National Centre for Disease Contro) is marketing Coronavirus and destroying our lives,” he was quoted as saying on one occasion. At other times, he only stopped short of calling the campaign against the spread of the virus a fraud. “Enough of this Covid-19 nonsense. 386 new cases? We have played the fool enough. And you have discharged 679… What did you give to these ones you discharged?” he queried on another occasion.

The governor even took upon himself the duties of a consultant at some point, telling the NCDC that instead of spreading fear and causing panic among the populace, they should simply tell the people the drugs that were used by Nigerians who survived the infection. “Tell people how to boost their immune system and stop creating merchants out of Corona. People are dying every day for more serious ailments because they can’t access hospitals. People have diabetes, kidney issues, liver issues, heart diseases, cancer, BP, labour complications, HIV, brain issues, lung diseases, etc. Some need to go to other states to access hospital services… They are dying in numbers and no one is counting them because you are counting Corona.”

The question on everyone’s lip is what the governor hopes to achieve by feigning the absence in his state of a ubiquitous pandemic that is a real as daylight and with records of the high number of eminent and not-so-eminent people who have died from it. More worrisome is the fact that some other minds in the state appear to be buying into the governor’s derisive thoughts of Coronavirus. It probably explains why the kinsmen of a former General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj-Gen. Olu Irefin in his Ayetoro-Gbede native community in Kogi State vehemently rejected the claim by the Nigerian Army that their son died of COVID-19 complications while attending the annual Chief of Army Staff conference in Abuja.

A statement signed by A.A. Aminu, a spokesman of the Ayetoro-Gbede Development Association, called on the authorities to investigate the general’s death because COVID-19 could not have killed their son at such speed. ‘“Except there is COVID 20, which we doubt, COVID-19 does not kill its victims within three days,” the statement said.

The earlier Governor Bello admits the reality of the ravaging virus and encourages the people to go for tests, the better for the state. There is no medal to be won from living in denial of a ubiquitous virus that is killing with the ruthlessness of a hydrokinetic force.

  • When Olubadan and ’23 kings’ partied together

When Olubadan and ’23 kings’ partied together

    By Olushola Ricketts

Once upon a time, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Akamu Adetunji, and the ’23 kings’ who former Oyo State Governor, Isiaka Ajimobi, gave crowns to, couldn’t share the same room. Their rift was only put to rest when current Governor Seyi Makinde withdrew their crowns as part of the condition to settle out of court.

Eminent personalities, indigenes of Ibadan, clubs and societies in the ancient city including former President Olusegun Obasanjo had tried to wade into the conflict but were unsuccessful.

Recently, the high chiefs graced Olubadan’s queen, Olori Ololade Adetunji’s 70 birthday party which held at Jogor Event Centre in Ibadan. After the Oba walked in with the celebrant, all the chiefs stepped out and prostrated before him to pay homage.

It was their first public appearance after their differences with Olubadan was settled by Makinde and they all had fun at the event.

The birthday party also had in attendance personalities like Captain Kola Karim, Mr. Ayo Karim, Hon. Joseph Tegbe, Oloye Akin Fijabi, Cheif Lekan Alabi, Bayo Adelabu, Chief Folashade Tinubu Ojo
