    Sina FADARE

A seasoned engineer, Chief Bamidele Anjorin Babatunde, has called for a new synergy and creative thinking by the government in tackling the poor infrastructure and dilapidated roads that are scattered all over the country

The Chief Executive Director of Glister Success Ltd,  who frowned at the regular occurrence of building collapse cases in Nigeria, said that some human factors which  includes incompetence by the contractors, builders, and greed in order to save cost and cut corners at the detriment of quality and standard material applications, causing these avoidable calamities.

He lamented that the regulators are the worst culprits because with ‘under-table’ bargains, a lot of structures are approved and erected with sub-standard materials adding that roads that are completed and commissioned across the country usually begin to earn “deplorable” status two to three years after completion

Babatunde explained  that the roads constructed by the regional leaders in the year 60’s and early 70’s, are still very solid because of the standard of materials used, noting that  the team regulators were also patriots, and did everything to ensure Nigerians got the best.

“Moreover, the pressure on Nigeria’s roads is enormous, hence there is no more weight limit on the roads, where maximum weight on some major highways should not exceed more than 30MT, you see some haulage trucks loading in excess of 50MT and above. This has been causing a lot of damages on the roads. ”

“A good maintenance culture is the panacea for a durable road network, but unfortunately, we do not have such in this part of the world.”

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Ismail Omipidan noted that the company is owned by Collins Crown Limited.

In a statewide broadcast, Friday, Governor Hope Uzodimma, spoke on the need for Imo people to adhere strictly to the Covid-19 safety protocols, wondering why they have “refused to adhere to simple Covid-19 protocols of wearing of facemask, to regularly sanitize and wash their hands and to observe social distancing even when it is for their own safety.”

He also advised the state workers not to listen to any call from labour leaders for a strike action over false claims of unpaid salaries, warning that the government will adopt a no work no pay policy in accord with established labour laws .

He therefore noted that “the Government Executive Order making it compulsory for all Imo people to wear facemask will henceforth be enforced with unwavering determination.”

“In addition to the above, all hotels, eateries, supermarkets and stores are by the Executive Order compelled to provide hand sanitizers, wash hand stands, test the temperature of their customers and insist on facemask before admitting them into their premises. C’River Health Commissioner rescue malnourished children

    Our Reporter

As a result of the raging COVID-19 pandemic which has continued to affected lives and livelihoods of many families due to poverty, hunger and lack of resources, it has caused more severe forms of Malnutrition in communities.

In addressing the issue especially in Cross River State, the state Commissioner for health Dr Betta Edu has commenced visitation to remote communities with the nutrition taskforce in continuation of the Maternal, Newborn and Children Health (MNCH) week to search for severely malnourished children as part of the Monitoring/Surveillance process.

Recall that the Cross River State Government in a bid to address the issue of severe malnutrition in remote communities launched a nutrition monitoring taskforce headed by the State Commissioner for Health Dr Betta Edu, with the function of monitoring and surveillance of where malnourished children can be identified.

“We are faced with an uncommon situation in the State and as such the Government of Prof. Ben Ayade will leave no stone unturned until such children are located and given proper medical treatment and attention”, Dr Betta Edu stated.

She also noted that the state Government is also working on creating more job opportunities for young people to get employed. In the words of the Governor, he said “We will not only protect lives during this COVID-19 Pandemic, but we must deliberately work to protect Livelihood.”

“Today we’ve discovered over five cases of Marasmus and we’ll keep searching for more while attending to these ones. You can play a great role by calling the State’s attention to such Children. This is a wakeup call for our Development partners working in the Child and Nutritional Health space to do more in support of Government.

“Marasmus is a form of malnutrition that occurs when there’s a low intake of nutrients and energy thereby resulting in the child losing weight, fat and muscles. As a State we can’t remember when last we had such cases because our people readily have access to foods containing Carbohydrates and protein etc.

“These kids Sylvester Offiong and Emmanuel Sunday Akpan born on November 2018 and February 2019 respectively never had any medical attention nor care due to lack of finances as ascertained by both Mothers. The Ayade Care Insurance Scheme which is more like a social scheme will help these group of families access medical care free of charge.

“We also had Shedrack Joseph and Isaac Joseph who are also suffering from marasmic- Kwashiorkor, they too have been taken to General Hospital Calabar  for proper medical care/attention without any charges and to sustain this, all the affected Mothers will be provided with a running business to enable them feed their children and live a comfortable life after treatment at GHC is concluded. As a Government we’ll not allow our children to die as a result of Malnutrition so the search for these precious ones continues.”

Expressing their appreciation, the Mothers of the Children Miss Imabong Sunday and Esther Offiong who are unemployed, thanked the State Governor Sen. Prof Ben Ayade and the Health Commissioner Dr Betta Edu for coming to their rescue as all hope was lost.

Dr Edu supported all families with bags of rice, toiletries and cash donations.

Also, the state government has called on the Federal Government and Development partners to support State with more useful health interventions and basic resources targeted at these health challenges in communities.
