In the words of the Chief Executive Officer of Botmecash, “My company was born out of the desire to create a truly transparent, affordable and futuristic financial service platform that would help Nigerians have easy access to current and most valuable, most sort after currency of the world right now, which is bitcoin.”

He added: “As faith currently has it today, bitcoin is the 5th most acceptable currency in the world so it makes transactions easy and swift unlike naira that can’t be spent anywhere beyond the shores of Nigeria. Botmecash currently has the capacity to offer an average bank can do technology wise today. Coalition decry media attacks against military, service chiefs

    Agency Reporter

The Coalition of Civil Society Groups Against Terrorism in Nigeria (CCSGATN), has accused some media platforms of bias reportage against the military, stating that the misinformation which is aimed at discrediting the Nigerian Army can potentially undermine the nation’s national security.

In a statement issued by the coalition to address the twin issues of ” reported resignation of 127 soldiers” from the Nigerian Army and an alleged revised Harmonised Terms and Conditions of Service for Officers which approved retirement benefits for military chiefs, CCSGATN said the reports smack deliberate falsehood aimed at the Military leadership.

According to the Convener and Secretary of the Coalition, Comrade Oladimeji Odeyemi and Barrister John Atani, some unpatriotic individuals are using sections of the media to churn out falsehood against the Nigerian Army with a view to set the military against the people and the government.

Addressing the issue of some soldiers exiting the Military, Odeyemi and Atani, warned against interference in the internal affairs of the nation’s security apparatus, adding that the foundation of the military profession is discipline and without discipline, an army cannot stand.

Retirement is a planned, routine and normal exercise in the Military, some retire on ground of ill health, over stay on rank, over age, lack of interest among other reasons.

Politicising such in the name of reportage is nothing short of a disservice to the nation.

“We believe some news media are acting in cohorts with certain divisive elements to initiate bad blood and create needless anxiety in the military and the public over routine military exercises”.

“The media should know that they carry huge influence, shape opinion and plays a critical role in the battle against insecurity being fought in the country. Therefore, the right information and correct narratives must be the hallmark of reports and posts. They must eschew reports that have divisive colouration and depressing to the gallant troops in the war front.”

On the purported report from an online media platform headlined, “EXPOSED: Buratai, Olonisakin, Two Other Service Chiefs Get Eight Flashy Vehicles, Over 40 Soldiers, More As New Retirement Benefits”, the Coalition said the report is mischievous and junk journalism.

“While Sahara Reporters have carved a niche of notoriety with fake news and impropriety reporting, one, would, at least, expect the junk platform to at least get its basic arithmetic right instead of lumping its discredited report together.

“Assuming and not necessarily conceding that the HTACOS was revised in 2017, how was that fresh news when it’s already four years? Does this not show the news blog as one working to an answer by making a futile attempt to depict the current Service Chiefs as narcissistic and self-seeking.

“Its time for Sahara Reporters and its ilks to know that Nigerians know the truth and they won’t be swayed by the compost oozing from soiled platforms. They are in sync with the military on the mission to bring insurgency, banditry and all other violent crimes to their knees once and for all in the country.

  • Leverkusen, Wolfsburg in battle royale

    Leverkusen, Wolfsburg in battle royale

Bayer Leverkusen take on Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga today , with the visitors able to move level on points with their forthcoming opponents in the table with a victory.

That prospect will have been made all the more difficult by Leverkusen’s morale boosting 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday, though.

Indeed, after four league games without a victory, Peter Bosz’s side looked like the team prior to the winter break once more on their way to a deserved win against their Champions League qualification rivals.

Moussa Diaby in particular was in inspired form throughout the 90 minutes, firing Leverkusen into the lead with a decisive finish in the first half before setting up teenage sensation Florian Wirtz for the winner 10 minutes from time after a sensational counter-attack. Dortmund had rallied a little after the break, levelling proceedings via Julian Brandt’s fine curling finish, but even Edin Terzic and his players would have to admit that the better team on the day earned themselves a vital three points.

Bosz must ensure that his players build on such an impressive performance and win, though, with another unbeaten run perhaps required if they are to sustain their place in the top four, and certainly to retain any lingering hopes of a challenging Bayern Munich for the title.

Wolfsburg, meanwhile, got back to winning ways themselves on Tuesday with a commanding 2-0 win away to Mainz 05.

After a dour first half, Bartosz Bialek and Wout Weghorst struck twice within 15 minutes of each other to take the game away from the struggling hosts, who failed to muster a single shot on target across the entire 90 minutes.

  • Uganda internet shutdown and why Nigerians should be worried

Uganda internet shutdown and why Nigerians should be worried

    By Joel Popoola

The people of Uganda have just gone an entire week without the internet.

And when the online blackout ended, Ugandans discovered their democracy may well have been stolen whilst they sat in the digital dark.

And the lesson to other authoritarian nations is as clear as it is concerning: Controlling the internet allows you control your people.

Which is why Nigeria must amend its constitution to publicly state that such blatant violation of our democratic rights will never happen here.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni last weekend claimed his sixth successive election victory – despite widespread allegations of election fraud and voter intimidation.

Traditional presidential elections see candidates promising the policies they will enact if elected, poster campaigns, public speeches, debates and political advertising.

President Museveni prefers to control Ugandans’ access to the internet, blocking social media and messaging services during elections and even, it seems, ordering a nationwide internet blackout preventing the population from accessing important information at a nationally critical moment.

Read Also: Uganda switches on internet after days of shutdown

Museveni has total control over the mainstream media in Uganda, forcing his opponent Bobbi Wine to rely on social media to get his message out.

With no internet, this became impossible in the final days of an election campaign.

    This makes democracy impossible.

As it stands, Wine is confined to his home, unable to contest the election results and only able to communicate with the outside world in social media posts only visible to people outside of Uganda.

The internet shutdown also appears to have hampered international observer’s efforts to ensure the legitimacy of the elections.

In previous elections, as we saw in Nigeria during the #EndSARS protests, Ugandans have evaded digital censorship with VPNs – software routing their internet use through other countries. But it seems that the Ugandan censors have caught up, and this time VPN servers were blocked too.

Uganda is not the only African nation to experience sudden internet shutdowns which magically coincide with elections. We have seen similar “coincidences” in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe and Sudan.

In fact, one campaign group recorded over 200 international incidents of intentional internet shutdowns in 2019, describing them as “blatant violations of the rights to freedom of expression and access to information”.

Which is why Nigeria must show continental leadership and amend our constitution to guarantee that our citizens will never have their access to the internet unreasonably or unavoidably restricted.

We would not be the first country in the world to do this – Greece has made a similar constitutional amendment and countries from India to Costa Rica have publicly recognised the human right to the internet – but we would be the first country in Africa.

As such this is a rare and important opportunity for Nigeria not just to be a regional role model, but to signpost to the international community that we are a nation which believes in democracy and digital human rights – not to mention a safe and stable country in which to invest and with whom to do business.

And such a simple move could have a profoundly positive impact on public trust in Nigerian democracy too – trust which study after study has shown to be worryingly low.

Just think of the impact if Nigerian politicians of all parties and ethnicities came together as one to say the same thing. Whoever you are, whoever you vote for, we will never deprive you of your democratic rights. Though we believe in different things, we are all committed to the same democratic values. And we are enshrining this value in law.

At the digital democracy campaign I lead our mission is to harness digital technology to improve democracy.

We have created a free app – Rate Your Leader – which puts verified voters in direct contact with their elected leaders allowing them to build two-way relationships of trust and transparency and to work together to improve both our communities and our country.

Rate Your Leader lets politicians know what is happening in their areas and what matters most to the people who elect them. It also allows voters to get important information directly from local leaders.

This sort of communication is critical to the integrity and effective functioning of our democracy in 2021.

In recent weeks we have seen plenty of debate about the democratic implications of world leaders such as former US President Trump being banned from social media platforms.

But the banning of entire nations from the entire internet in order to prevent them from expressing their hard won democratic rights, is an altogether more alarming and sinister development.

Nigeria must use our position as Africa’s biggest economy and most populous nation to stand against it.

  • Milan square up against gritty Atalanta

Milan square up against gritty Atalanta

Both Milan and Atalanta have been impressive at times this season and have a point to prove going into this game with the Rossoneri having won 13 of their opening 18 matches with one defeat and deservedly sit top of Serie A.

Atalanta are currently in sixth place in the Serie A standings and have found their resurgence halted by consecutive draws in recent weeks. La Dea were held to a 1-1 stalemate by Udinese during the week and will need to take it up a notch on Saturday.

AC Milan, on the other, have recovered from their defeat against Juventus earlier this month with two comprehensive victories in the Serie A. The Rossoneri have a three-point lead over arch-rivals Inter Milan at the moment and will want to win this game.

AC Milan have been exceptional under Stefano Pioli over the past year and could make a massive statement in the title race with a victory in this game.  Pioli’s side lost 3-1 at home against Juventus but bounced back by defeating Torino 2-0 with Rafael Leao and Franck Kessié on target.

AC Milan met Torino again in the Coppa Italia three days later, advancing 5-4 on penalties after a scoreless draw.

Milan’s last match was a 2-0 win in Cagliari. Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored both goals in a 90-minute performance.

Atalanta have a strong squad and are likely to test AC Milan’s depleted defence this weekend.  Atalanta had the opportunity to leap into third place on Wednesday, but back-to-back stalemates with Genoa and Udinese (the latter a rescheduled Week 10 fixture) have seen their progress stall.

But Atalanta’s manager Gian Piero Gasperini hopes to keep up with the top teams in Serie A.

“It’s important to remain in the group at the top, clearly Inter and Milan are apart,” Gasperini said at a press conference. “Every result is fundamental, but the positive streak is also important.

“All of them struggle to respect the pace.

“In general, we are in good shape, we are in good company.

We must stay there; everything passes from the single matches.

“We are close to the end of the first round, it’s always a good point to evaluate because you have played all the teams.”

    Head-to-Head

AC Milan have a good Head-to-Head record against Atalanta and have won 14 matches out of a total of 36 games played between the two sides. Atalanta have managed 10 victories against the Rossoneri and can potentially trouble their opponents this weekend as they lost only one of their last 10 Serie A meetings with Milan, winning three and drawing six. .

  • Court never sacked NDDC IMC says Lawyer

Court never sacked NDDC IMC says Lawyer

    Agency Reporter

The Abuja division of the Federal High Court has clarified that it never made an order sacking the Prof. Dabiel Pondei-led Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

This is according to a statement made available to newsmen on Saturday in Abuja.

The statement said Justice Ahmed Mohammed only granted leave to the applicants to commence legal actions against the interim management board of the NDDC.

Recall that over the past few months, the IMC of the NDDC had been a subject of media coverage especially with regards to an alleged order of Justice A. R. Muhammed of the Federal High Court, Abuja suspending or disbanding the committee.

However, according to the statement, the case was struck out on Jan. 13, 2021 and the judge never made any order suspending or disbanding the IMC.

It explained that rather, what the judge did which was misrepresented in the press was to grant leave (permission) to the plaintiff to file a case for mandamus against the defendants, praying for the orders which the plaintiff attached to the motion for leave as required by law.

This, it said was especially because at that stage, the court could not have granted those orders yet since all the plaintiff prayed for was only leave to file for mandamus and not for the grant of those orders.

It added that in the proceedings of Dec. 8, 2020, the court requested to see the reporters who originated the story of the purported sack of the IMC and observed that the mischief originated from the lawyers to the plaintiff.

“They were consequently instructed to go and correct the impression created,” the statement said.

It said the plaintiff’s lawyer never appeared in the case after then until it was eventually struck out on Jan. 13 2021.

It expressed shock that the case was cited as a basis for the executive action by the presidency dissolving the IMC and appointing a sole administrator especially when the minister of Niger Delta is himself a lawyer and also a party in the case who ought to know that there was no such order made.

The statement expressed hope that the presidency would act on the latest judgement of the court and reinstate the Prof. Pondei-led IMC of the NDDC.

  • Ødegaard close to Arsenal move

    Ødegaard close to Arsenal move

Real Madrid midfielder Martin Ødegaard has become frustrated with life at the Bernabeu. The 22-year-old has managed just 11 senior appearances for the club since he joined back in 2015.

During his time in the Spanish capital, Ødergaard has enjoyed successful loan spells with Heerenveen and Vitesse in Eredivisie and, more recently, Real Sociedad in La Liga.

Following the loan spells, the midfielder was expected to compete more regularly in Zinedine Zidane’s side, but that hasn’t been the case. As a result, the Norway international has asked for a move away.

After he announced his desire to leave, Premier League side Arsenal showed immediate interest. The Gunners made an approach on Wednesday and the midfielder has appeared to favour a move to the Emirates over other potential destinations.

If the move goes ahead, it could be a real coup for Mikel Arteta. The youngster will help release some of the pressure of emerging talent Emile Smith-Rowe and will be the creative midfielder the Gunners are so desperate to acquire. He would also play in midfield alongside fellow Real Madrid loanee, Dani Ceballos.

As expected, Ødegaard attracted plenty of interest after declaring his desire to depart. Real Sociedad, who the 22-year-old spent last season on loan with, were keen for a return. The midfielder provided seven goals and nine assists from 36 appearances for the La Liga side last season.

  • Doubts over Tuchel’s takeover at Chelsea

Doubts over Tuchel’s takeover at Chelsea

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich and Thomas Tuchel would have a tempestuous relationship should the German take up the reins at Stamford Bridge, according to our latest vodcast with The Beautiful Game, with Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl floated as a superior option should they replace Frank Lampard.

The German was fired by Paris Saint-Germain over the Ligue 1 winter break and replaced by Mauricio Pochettino, while Lampard is coming under increasing pressure, with just two Premier League wins in the last eight matches.

Tuchel boasts trophy-winning pedigree, having won the French championship twice, a Coupe de France and a Coupe de la Ligue during his time in Paris, along with a DFB-Pokal from his two-year stint at Borussia Dortmund.

But would he be the best option to rejuvenate Chelsea, or would another German, working in England already, be a better option?

“I think it’s a tough one because when you look at it, is Tuchel the man to take that final step?” asked Dot from The Beautiful Game podcast. “We saw him get to the Champions League final and ultimately fail at the final hurdle. Chelsea are a team that pride themselves on success: they need to win a trophy every year. Is Tuchel that man to compete with Klopp and Pep Guardiola at the top level? I’m not quite convinced.”
