    •As AAU postpones students’ resumption

Residents of Ekpoma, Esan West local government area, yesterday, staged a peaceful protest over incessant kidnapping in the area.

The protest followed the killing of a youth by kidnappers.

Commercial activities were grounded in the community as students, traders and artisans joined in the protest.

Sources said the corpse of the youth was retrieved a few hours after he was abducted.

On December 22 last year, a couple was kidnapped and the kidnappers beat the wife to death over inability to pay ransom.

The protesters set bonfires on major roads in Ekpoma.

Hausa traders in Ekpoma, however fled, when some hoodlums stormed the markets and slaughtered many goats.

Viral video showed the protesters taking the slain goats home.

Campaign billboards for the 2027 general elections were pulled down by the protesters.

Principal Security Officer to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Austin Eigbiremolen, said adequate security would be deployed to Ekpoma.

He assured that the kidnappers would be chased away.

Edo Police spokesman, Eno Ikoedem, said the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has relocated to Ekpoma to deal with the situation.

Ikoedem said nine persons who were kidnapped on Friday were rescued unhurt after the Eagle Combat Drone Unit was deployed to the forest alongside with local hunters.

“In the heat of the rescue operation, the kidnappers’ camp was located through real-time aerial intelligence.

“The ground troops stormed the camp, forcing the kidnappers to flee and abandon two locally fabricated AK-49 rifles. The victims, including five children, were rescued unhurt. This landmark deployment underscores the transformative role of technology in modern policing and sets a new benchmark for operational enhancement in Edo State.”

Meanwhile, the management of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, has postponed resumption and commencement of academic activities.

Sources said the management took the decision due to incessant kidnappings in the area.

The source said the move was to prevent students from participating in protests against kidnapping.

  • Trump becomes bull in a China shop

Trump becomes bull in a China shop

Two contrasting theories have been advanced to explain United States president Donald Trump’s greed for foreign lands and resources. One, that his rapaciousness accords with his private and natural inclination for coveting other peoples properties. Alarmingly for the rest of the world, this greed sits very well with America’s historical fundamentals that saw their founding fathers seize and expropriate native Indian and Mexican lands. For both the US and Mr Trump, eyeing, co-opting and seizing other people’s resources have become an existential necessity. Mr Trump knows no other way of existence than to plunder and pillage, while explaining that malfeasance away as a display of strength in a world populated by weak, undeserving and expendable people. His private business is a litany of plunder, and his personal life an exemplification of cruelty and unscrupulousness. It, therefore, gives him immense pleasure to now sit atop the American throne and project that greed around the world, receiving plane gifts here, signing private and national contracts there, and attempting to buy or coerce lands in Greenland or elsewhere for the US.

A second explanation relates to what some experts have described as the strategic projection of America’s national security interest. America now has a president totally averse to democracy and one who has not once enunciated any lofty ideal of democracy. Seizing Venezuelan oil, dispensing with that country’s controversial and repressive leader Nicolas Maduro, and exerting total and long-term control over the world’s largest deposit of crude oil is said to be a ploy to weaken China, neutralise Russia and Iran, and determine the price of oil. But China is transiting to clean energy at a bewildering rate, buying over 11 million electric vehicles of the 18.5m sold globally, at a time when the US is fixated on oil production at home and engaged in costly military adventures for oil abroad. Years ago, former Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez had explained American hostility to his country as inspired by the desire to control Venezuelan oil. While that desire has finally been accomplished, and regardless of the pacification of Venezuela’s weak, colluding and greedy elite, no one can accurately what the long-term consequences would be.

Many European countries have equivocated on the US attack on Venezuela, blaming the victim for its domestic antidemocratic practices, repression of the opposition, and rigged elections. But nothing really justifies US outlawry, for as it has become immediately obvious, Mr Trump who ordered the attack on Caracas had no interest whatsoever in democracy, fair elections or the rule of law. He knew what he wanted, and he had the boldness and defiance to go for it. In 1938 and 1939, much of Europe also condoned the adventurism of Adolf Hitler whose policy of Germany’s living space or Lebensraum took the continent apart and sucked the world into a devastating maelstrom. The predictable end was a war that led to the death of an estimated 50-80 million people, nearly half of whom were civilians. The world sees a disturbing parallel between Mr Trump and Hitler, but it is unclear how a vacillating Europe, which has also been bullied and derided by the American president, sees him. The US president expresses the fear that he might be impeached should his unpopular policies lead to the Republicans losing the midterm elections. In other words, he is already signaling that the ossification of US political divisions could be exploited to thwart democratic change.

The world order has been destroyed, as this column concluded last week, but eventually the US will face resistance, and from resistance will flow alliances that will inevitably trigger another major conflagration. Great war is the natural outcome of the destruction of world order, a cyclical inevitability to redefine, reorder and impose a new global order, whether it has the capacity to last or not. For now, the US has lost virtually all its friends as well as global respect, accompanied by the even heftier losses of democratic ideals and cultural imperialism it had projected for decades. Mr Trump’s first term was viewed as an aberration. His second term, not to say his domestic popularity that is underscored by racism, has cemented the view of America as an imperialist bully, a danger to world peace for its scores of sponsored terrorism against many countries, and completely destitute of the principles and ideals it had sold the world. Might had always been right, as history shows, but that might remained right only until a mightier force came along. From the Assyrians to the Babylonians, and on to the Chaldeans, and then the Greeks and Romans, it is a long, bloody history of one empire usurping another.

The world is not about to shed its toga and change its trajectory. As contemporary history shows, particularly as exampled by the despairing responses of France’s Emmanuel Macron to the US provocation, Britain’s keir Starmer’s, and Kemi Badenoch’s feeble twaddle over the morality of the attack, there are few brilliant and perceptive leaders left anywhere. Great leaders were not always in abundant supply even before now; but the scarcity is now so sever and punishing that the world must blanch with horror at the ubiquitousness of mediocre leadership. The US president has shown that the world is clearly more endangered by visionless and incompetent leadership than by the challenges nations relentlessly face, whether economic, social or political.

  • Obi’s defection sets teeth on edge

Obi’s defection sets teeth on edge

It took former Anambra governor Peter Obi over 2,600 words, about the size of a full newspaper page, to craft a simple defection (or what seems like defection) from his former party to the so-called mega opposition coalition, the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The statement was not just verbosity on display, it was the clearest indication of the dithering that buffets his politics and how deeply puzzled he gets when grappling with complex issues and entities. His experience in the Labour Party (LP), whose standard-bearer he was in the 2023 presidential election, concretises the general lacuna of his life and politics. As far back as the end of the third quarter of 2025, it was clear that Mr Obi’s stay in LP had become untenable. But he wanted ironclad assurances in the ADC regarding the presidential ticket for the 2027 poll. Yet, no one would give him that undertaking despite his Obidient Movement predicating their fanatical support for him on nothing less than the number one ticket.

The party primaries are now a few months away. To continue dithering would mean being stranded next year. So, Mr Obi has finally taken the plunge, but has needed circumlocutions and considerable blather to salve his troubled conscience and convince his ardent crowd that he remains the real deal. So he was impelled to say nothing, which his defection statement amounted to, in grand terms that fetch his amorphous band of supporters from their delusions. The supporters are, however, still agitated. They tentatively hinge their support for him on his taking the presidential ticket, not the running mate position. How they would react when it becomes obvious that the Camorra which runs the ADC had been pledged to former vice president Atiku Abubakar lock, stock, and barrel, remains to be seen. They can, if they wish, bolt from the party or reappraise their jaded philosophies about party politics. If the former, they would be committing suicide; and if the latter, they would be emptying themselves of the passion that frenzies their irrationalities.

Either way, Mr Obi is headed for very interesting times. He will make a grand show of contesting the presidential ticket not many months from now, but he knows deep down that that battle is lost and won already. He had been preceded in the ADC by the political aurochs from Adamawa State, a head start backed by financial wizardry and assured outcomes. Mr Obi can certainly not hope to upstage him, even if he managed, together with his baying crowd, to create an atmosphere in the party and in the country conducive to only a southern presidential candidate. The jobholders that flocked into the party along with Alhaji Atiku are not interested in Mr Obi’s vexing parsimony; they instead salivate for the former vice president’s munificence, and can breathe better under his inattentiveness to detail. Well, all said, Mr Obi is now irretrievably locked in the same boat with Alhaji Atiku and the ADC. It does not matter any longer whether the opposition craft is seaworthy or not.

Indications of the despondency and desperation that led the former Anambra governor to take the fateful step of hitching a ride with the ADC in 2027 abound in his rambling disquisition on democracy, defection, and patriotism. His statement was replete with value judgement, name-calling, unverified facts, simplistic reasoning, untested theories, and sweeping and sanctimonious generalisations. Winning elections at a state level or being elevated to the governorship office does not often tax a politician’s profundity; so, it was not surprising that Mr Obi took the Anambra stool. Manipulate the electorate’s emotions, conjure the right catchphrases, posture as the moral right in a sea of moral wrongs, and add some religious or cultural ketchup, and a governorship candidate is made. But transiting to a higher level has, however, proved daunting for him, despite exploiting the country’s dangerous religious cleavages. To aspire higher, he would need to manifest philosophical depth, network across the country’s geopolitical zones, and develop a solid and verifiable cross-cultural appeal. These have proved too much for his short-termist approach to politics.

In his presumed defection statement, Mr Obi gave an indication of how his mind worked. He was already thinking of the presidency and campaigning for the presidential ticket. He used more than two-thirds of the statement to angle for the top job, when it was not clear that he had registered with the ADC already. After profusely de-marketing Nigeria and concluding it had been consigned to the dregs, after describing its institutions, particularly the electoral commission INEC, as weak and perhaps unsalvageable, he spoke glowingly of how other nations rose to prominence and development through ‘unity and effective leadership’, ‘honesty’, ‘transparency’, and ‘responsiveness’. He regurgitated the street mendacity about the current Nigerian government attempting to turn the nation into a one-party state simply because of political defections, which culture he himself exploited to his advantage on at least three occasions, and he also parroted the ignorance about taxing the poor obviously because he had not read the new tax laws. And then he waxed theoretical about development indices of some south-east Asian countries without explaining why he was unable to apply, even partially, the rubric of those theories in Anambra which he governed for eight unremarkable years.

The statement was also full of non-sequiturs, drawing direct relationship between ‘grabbing power and mismanaging it’, and suggesting that his travels and interactions with intellectuals and leaders had opened his eyes to how nations develop, an epiphany he believed would serve him well as he had become equipped for leadership. Had it been so easy to transcend the chasm between theory and practice, every professor would be a great statesman. But just before he dropped his pen, he finally got to the subject of his defection, in the third or so paragraph to the last. For this peripatetic politician who just trotted the globe so effortlessly and spoke so glibly about everything, and inflated himself with the helium of leadership theories spanning three continents, he failed his own test of predicating great leadership on honesty. He had at various fora insisted he was still in the LP, and claimed he was only testing the waters in the ADC. But in his defection statement, he dishonestly claimed: “Having been part of the coalition from inception, I now respectfully call on my political leaders, associates, supporters, the Obidient Movement, political leaders and members of the opposition parties across the country to join this broad national coalition under the African Democratic Congress led by Sen. David Mark.”

He forgot that newspapers of the day contained reports of ADC leaders and so many other politicians urging him to make public his defection, especially as he had waffled over his continuing membership of the LP. Well, better late than never. He will now presumably go ahead and register with the ADC and intensify his campaign for the presidential ticket. But if he is again worsted in the presidential primary, he will have nowhere else to go. He will lick his wounds, aware that those who seized the leadership of the ADC had done so at the behest of Alhaji Atiku, and are in no mood to subsume their future or hope under the politics and style of a former LP man from whom they could not hope to make hay while the sun shines at its brightest.

Yet, in all this, there is a catch somewhere, and Mr Obi may perhaps be more disingenuous than some Nigerians think. His former running mate in the 2023 presidential poll, Datti Baba-Ahmed, seems to know him more than anyone else. He knows him, it appears, as a man full of vacillation. Speaking to the media late last week, he insisted that it did not seem as if Mr Obi had actually defected. What he thinks the former LP standard-bearer had done was to merely tune his mind to be in a coalition arrangement with the ADC. If Mr Obi fails to get the ticket, swears Mr Baba-Ahmed, the doors of the LP will remain open, and any support he wants will be given to him. The other side of the coin, however, is that Mr Obi lionised his association with the ADC right from the beginning, thus giving the impression he was not a late joiner. Yet, curiously, he said little else, in a manner that also suggests he is minded to run with the hare and hunt with the hound. What then are Nigerians, and particularly ADC chieftains, to make of Mr Obi’s encouragement to his support base to ‘join this broad coalition under the ADC led by Sen. Mark’?

Since Mr Baba-Ahmed has now burst everyone’s bubble, ADC leaders will likely press Mr Obi to clarify his association with the so-called mega coalition. If the former Anambra governor goes ahead to register at his ward, they will call for no additional proof and will regard any suspicion as crying wolf where none exists. But if he pussyfoots as is his custom, then they will smell a rat and press him to commit himself. What seems to be the case is that Mr Obi is hedging his bets. He is merely procrastinating as usual, unable to make up his mind as firmly as many, and probably himself, hope. He is disillusioned with the crisis-ridden LP, and can see no alternative in sight. But he thinks he still has in his corner the captive audience that gave him 12 states and the FCT in the 2023 presidential poll, in the same way the hallucinating Buharistas think they still have a captive 12 million votes that can be whimsically deployed during any election.

But deep down, Mr Obi probably senses his goose is already cooked. He has, therefore, shamefacedly committed himself to the ADC without making it sound so, in delicate literary half measures. He half boyishly expects that by some celestial intervention, Alhaji Atiku would in the course of events be unhorsed and he would be presented the ticket on a platter. Politics may have magical charms, but it is not magic. Alhaji Atiku realises this, and has now fully committed himself to the ADC after first taken refuge and playing politics in press statements. It is Mr Obi’s turn to chafe at how nature and political circumstances have dealt him a cruel hand.

Opposition leaders, others celebrate Tambuwal at 60

Prominent political leaders across party lines on Saturday converged on Abuja to celebrate former Sokoto Governor, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal on his 60th birthday, paying glowing tributes to his leadership style, humility, and commitment to democratic ideals.

The leaders spoke in Abuja at the birthday colloquium organised to commemorate Tambuwal’s birthday, which featured a keynote lecture by the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega titled ‘The future of democratic governance in Nigeria pathways to national cohesion human security and economic renewal’

The event attracted a large gathering of opposition figures from across the political spectrum, including Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto Matthew Hassan Kukah, Sen. Tunde Ogbeha, former Imo Governor Emeka Ihedioha, Sen. Sani Zango Daura, Lawal Batagarawa, Sen. Jibrilla Bindow, former Kwara Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, Solomon Dalung, former Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and former Ekiti Governor Kayode Fayemi

Others included former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Babachir Lawal; former Kano Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, former Speaker of the House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara; former Edo Governor Oserheimen Osunbor; former Speaker Patricia Etteh; former Deputy Speaker Babangida Nguroje; Professor Pat Utomi, former Gombe Governor Alhassan Dangwanbo, Sen Enyinnaya Abaribe and former Deputy Speaker Austin Opara

Tambuwal warned that Nigeria stands at a critical point in its history and requires honest leadership, responsible governance and national unity to avert a deeper crisis.

Tambuwal said the country had drifted dangerously away from the vision of its founding leaders and must urgently confront its governance failures to recover.

According to him, Nigeria’s present condition is far removed from the hopes that accompanied the return to democratic rule, noting that the situation should trouble not only citizens alive today but also those who laboured to build the nation.

He said the country had reached a point where denial was no longer an option and that meaningful progress could only begin with a sincere admission of what had gone wrong.

Tambuwal argued that rescuing Nigeria must rise above personal ambition, ethnic considerations and party interests, warning that political practices that weaken institutions and undermine democratic growth were part of the problem.

He said leadership should be about service to the people rather than personal gain, stressing that public office must not be treated as a pathway for self-enrichment or the imposition of unfit successors.

The former Speaker maintained that national renewal could not be left to political parties alone, adding that citizens must actively participate in demanding good governance and accountable leadership.

He said Nigerians had no alternative country to retreat to and must therefore commit to doing the right thing to ensure the emergence of leaders who are prepared to govern responsibly.

Tambuwal also declared his readiness to take greater personal risks in defence of democracy and national renewal, saying he was recommitting himself to working with Nigerians who share a belief in good governance and the need to turn the country around.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who chaired the event, explained why he and former President Goodluck Jonathan opposed Tambuwal’s emergence as Speaker of the House of Representatives in 2011.

Obasanjo said the opposition was based on party considerations and the desire to sustain gender inclusion in legislative leadership following the ruling party’s support for Mulikat Akande Adeola.

He said the thinking at the time was that since a woman had emerged as Speaker for the first time, she should be encouraged to continue in that role.

Tambuwal, then a second-term lawmaker from the North West, went on to defeat Akande Adeola from the South West, polling 252 votes against her 90 in the speakership contest.

Despite lacking the backing of the Jonathan administration, Tambuwal received support from opposition lawmakers, marking one of the rare moments in the Fourth Republic when the legislature openly asserted its independence against executive preference.

Obasanjo said the lawmakers exercised their constitutional rights and he and Jonathan ultimately respected the outcome, adding that one quality he noticed early in Tambuwal was humility, which he described as essential to genuine leadership.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, who joined the event virtually, acknowledged that there were disagreements between the executive and the House during Tambuwal’s tenure but credited him with holding the chamber together.

Jonathan said Tambuwal enjoyed strong confidence from members of the House and demonstrated leadership strength despite political differences.

Former Senate President and National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Mark described Tambuwal as a dependable and disciplined leader whose political journey has earned him national respect beyond partisan boundaries

Mark, who served as Special Guest of Honour at the event, said Tambuwal’s career reflected loyalty to democratic principles and selfless service to the nation

Read Also: ‘We need to be at best to beat Nigeria’

He recounted how Tambuwal and his deputy approached him ahead of the 2011 election, expressing confidence that they would emerge Speaker and Deputy Speaker regardless of party pressure.

Mark said he deliberately ignored pressure from party leaders on the eve of the election, noting that on that occasion he chose to defy expectations.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, described Tambuwal as a leader with national potential and urged him to live up to the expectations placed on him.

Former Anambra Governor Peter Obi said attaining 60 offered an opportunity for reflection urging moderation and wisdom at that stage of life

Praising Tambuwal as a bridge builder committed to consensus, justice and national unity, he said, “I celebrate you and wish you well as you journey ahead. The sky is your limit.

Former Edo State governor and former APC National Chairman, Sen. Adams Oshiomhole commended Tambuwal’s ability to manage a politically divided House and recalled his personal compassion during a period of bereavement.

On her part, Tambuwal’s former rival in the speakership race, Mulikat Akande Adeola, dismissed any suggestion of lingering resentment, saying leadership outcomes were ultimately determined by destiny and that there was no animosity between them.

Fayemi warned that democracy was under threat globally, citing coups and democratic breakdowns across Africa, and urged Nigeria to continue to protect legislative independence.

  • Southeast APC endorses Tinubu for second term, pledges massive votes in 2027

Southeast APC endorses Tinubu for second term, pledges massive votes in 2027

Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Southeast on Saturday endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office, pledging to mobilise massive votes for his re-election in the 2027 general elections.

The endorsement was the outcome of a high-level Southeast APC meeting at the Presidential Hotel, Enugu, where party leaders, Governors, lawmakers, elders and critical stakeholders from across the zone reviewed the region’s political trajectory and resolved to align fully with the ruling party at the centre.

Imo Governor Hope Uzodimma, who is also the Chairman of the Southeast Governors’ Forum and Director-General of the APC 2027 election project, said President Tinubu had entrusted the political future of his re-election to the Southeast, describing it as both an honour and a responsibility.

Uzodimma noted that the Southeast could no longer afford political isolation, stressing that the region’s marginal contribution to APC’s victory in the 2023 presidential election weakened its bargaining power at the national level.

He said while other zones contributed between 34 and 54 per cent of votes to the APC in 2023, the Southeast recorded about six per cent, a situation he described as politically unsustainable.

According to him, the political tide in the region has since changed, pointing to the growing strength of the APC in the Southeast.

Uzodimma said the party controls three out of the five Southeast states, up from two in 2023, while its representation in the Senate has risen from six to eight senators.

He added that APC lawmakers in the House of Representatives from the zone have also increased from eight to 23.

“These numbers give us hope, but they also give us a challenge,” Uzodimma said. “The growth we see among leaders must reflect at the ballot box in 2027. Politics is pay as you earn. No zone can produce a president alone, and if we continue to vote provincially, we will remain on the sidelines of national power.”

He declared that President Tinubu deserved a second term to complete the economic and security reforms initiated by his administration, citing improvements in foreign exchange stability, security, access to student loans through NELFUND, infrastructure development and economic reforms that previous governments avoided.

Enugu Governor Peter Mbah described the endorsement of President Tinubu and the increasing alignment of the Southeast with the APC as a “paradigm shift grounded in pragmatism.”

He said the region had moved from “standing at the crossroads of history to shaping history itself.”

Mbah said the decision to support Tinubu’s re-election was rooted in facts, vision and the tangible benefits already accruing to the region from alignment with the centre.

He cited federal projects such as the revival of the Eastern Railway corridor, gas and energy development initiatives in the region, and the approval of the concession of the Enugu Airport, which he said would position the state as an international gateway for the Southeast.

“The Renewed Hope Agenda is beyond a political slogan,” Mbah said. “It is about aligning vision at the centre with delivery at the states. These are not symbolic gestures but strategic decisions that show a federal leadership committed to inclusive governance.”

Also speaking, Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State expressed confidence that by 2027 all governors in the Southeast would be members of the APC.

He urged party leaders to embrace reconciliation and sacrifice, noting that the influx of new members required effective internal management rather than further party building.

“I want to urge our leaders that we need to forgive one another and make a lot so that those that are joining us now will have a place in our party. Like I promised our people in Ebonyi State that now that we have one party, the only struggle now how to manage the party and not how to build the party again. It is the same in every other state in the Southeast,” he said.

At the end of the meeting, stakeholders issued a communiqué in which they unanimously declared their total and unwavering support for President Tinubu as the APC’s sole presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.

The communiqué rejected what it described as ego-driven and divisive politics, calling for unity of purpose among political leaders and the wider Igbo population.

The leaders urged Ndi Igbo within and outside Nigeria to embrace the APC as the most viable platform for advancing the region’s political and economic interests, warning that scattering votes across multiple parties had historically weakened the Southeast’s influence at the national level.

They further pledged to mobilise human, material and political resources to deliver bloc votes for Tinubu across the five Southeastern states in 2027, with specific responsibilities assigned to governors for coordination and mobilisation within and across states.

The motion endorsing President Tinubu for a second term was formally moved by former Senate President, Senator Pius Anyim, and seconded by former Senate President, Senator Ken Nnamani, who described the decision as courageous and strategic, insisting “if you want to avoid the rain, you must enter the shade”.

Other prominent figures at the meeting included the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu; former Governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and Ikedi Ohakim, among several senators, lawmakers and party elders from the zone.

The meeting concluded with a call for sustained unity, voter mobilisation and strategic engagement ahead of the 2027 general elections, as the Southeast APC declared that the region had “spoken with one voice” in support of President Tinubu and the ruling party.

Finansal hareketlerdeki ilk evre, para hareketi onaylama süreçleridir.

Koruma unsurları, oyuncunun zihinsel denge durumunu fiilen etkiler.

Marrakech Showdown: Super Eagles, Fennecs clash for AFCON Semi-Final Spot

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)  quarter-final tie between the Super Eagles and the Fennecs of Algeria is more than a game; it is a meeting of history, pride and unfinished business. As both nations renew one of African football’s fiercest rivalries in Marrakech, past wounds, present form and future ambitions collide what  promises to be a match  full of drama, intensity and defining moments writes TUNDE LIADI

When the Super Eagles of Nigeria step onto the pristine turf of the Stade de Marrakech tomorrow, they will not just be facing Algeria’s Fennecs; they will be confronting decades of shared history, unresolved grudges and a rivalry that has shaped African football for more than half a century.

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi perhaps summed it up best with a proverb that has echoed across generations of African sport: “When two elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers.”

Akpeyi, a  bronze medallist at the 2019  AFCON in Egypt , believes tomorrow’s contest will be nothing short of brutal.

“That is what is going to happen between Nigeria and Algeria. It is going to be a tough game and the  Super Eagles must be ready to fight to be victorious.”

Indeed, tomorrow’s  quarter-final will be the 23rd  senior-level meeting between Nigeria and Algeria since their first clash at the All-Africa Games in Lagos in 1971. It will also be their 10th  meeting at the Africa Cup of Nations, a competition where both sides have repeatedly crossed paths at defining moments.

Nigeria have won only three of the previous nine AFCON meetings, while Algeria have claimed four victories, with two draws – including the infamous 1984 “Bouaké Accord”, a scoreless draw that eliminated defending champions Ghana and still stirs controversy four decades later.

Their AFCON rivalry swings between extremes. Nigeria’s glorious 1980 triumph in Lagos, sealed by goals from Segun Odegbami and Mudashiru Lawal, delivered the country’s first continental crown. Ten years later, the pendulum swung forcefully in Algeria’s favour as the Fennecs defeated Nigeria twice on home soil in 1990, including the final that handed them their maiden continental title.

More recently, the rivalry was reignited in Cairo 2019, when Riyad Mahrez’s stoppage-time free kick shattered Nigerian hearts in the semi-final. That wound remains fresh, and tomorrow offers the Super Eagles a chance at  a long-awaited revenge.

    Perfect records, different paths

Both teams arrive in Marrakech  for this decisive  AFCON 2025 quarter-finals with a somewhat identical records : four wins from four matches, yet their journeys have been stylistically different.

Nigeria have been the tournament’s most exhilarating attacking force. Twelve goals in four games, a dominant 4–0 Round-of-16 demolition of Mozambique and the most fluid attacking play seen from the Super Eagles in years have made them favourites in many quarters.

Former Super Eagles captain Segun Odegbami believes Morocco itself has played a decisive role in Nigeria’s resurgence.

“What made the difference for a group of great players that have struggled for years to find their rhythm?” Odegbami asked. “The answer is so simple it’s almost too good to be true.”

According to the 1980 AFCON hero, the immaculate Moroccan pitches have allowed the gifted Nigerian  players to finally express themselves.

“The single most important, yet least acknowledged, factor is the immaculate playing surface,” Odegbami explained. “Morocco has invested in some of the best football pitches in the world, and these pitches allow every pass, every movement, to become a work of art.”

Algeria, by contrast, have built their campaign on defensive steel. They have conceded just one goal in four matches and none  with  Luca Zidane, the  son of the legendary  French International, Zinedine Zidane, in goal.

    Zidane’s wall vs. Nigeria’s firepower

The looming tactical battle may revolve around Luca Zidane, the tournament’s only goalkeeper yet to concede a goal. Since switching allegiance to Algeria in September 2025, the 27-year-old has delivered three clean sheets and decisive saves, most notably in the extra-time victory over DR Congo.

But  tomorrow, standing in his way is arguably the most feared attacking duo in African football: Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen.

Lookman, the immediate  African Footballer of the Year, has already registered three goals and four assists, while Osimhen has matched him goal-for-goal.

Yet Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has acknowledged  the danger Nigeria pose but remains calm.

“Nigeria?” he asked rhetorically.“ We know them well, the match will not be easy.

“But we stayed solid against DR Congo, and that discipline can be decisive again.”

Asked about another dramatic moment like his 2019 free kick, Mahrez smiled knowingly:

“A free kick in the last minute again? We’ll see; anything is possible,” he added.

    Camp tensions and self-destruction button

Despite Nigeria’s brilliance on the pitch, clouds have hovered over their camp. Reports of unresolved bonus payments have triggered memories of the ill-fated 2026 World Cup playoff defeat to the DR Congo in November last year, where similar disputes preceded elimination.

Former midfielder Friday Ekpo, a bronze medallist at Senegal 1992 with the Super Eagles,  expressed deep frustration.

“It is a pity that we always fall into this line every now and then,” Ekpo said. “Issues regarding match bonuses should have been sorted to make the players happy, eager and motivated.”

Ex-defender Sam Sodje was even more direct.

“If it is true, then something is wrong,” he warned. “We can’t be talking about bonuses at this stage. We saw what non-payment did to us during the World Cup playoff. We don’t need that again.”

Yet Sodje remains optimistic: “With their performance so far, we have a big chance of winning this AFCON. We have one of the best strike forces in the world. Whoever is in charge must do what is needed.”

Nevertheless, immediate  past  Super Eagles’  captain,  William Troost-Ekong who was the MVP at the  2023 AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire,   has thrown his full support behind the national team, urging them to seize a golden opportunity and bring home the AFCON 2025 trophy.

The experienced defender believes the current squad has both the quality and mentality to go all the way in Morocco, adding Nigeria head into a high-profile quarter-final clash against Algeria with momentum firmly on their side, having recorded a flawless run of four wins from four matches.

The former Watford defender officially retired from international football in December, just weeks before the competition kicked off, bringing the curtain down on a distinguished decade-long international career with Nigeria.

In an emotional statement released, Troost-Ekong reflected on his journey in the green and white colours. “December was a deeply personal and emotional month for me, as I officially stepped away from international football after 10 unforgettable years representing Nigeria,” he wrote. “To have worn the green and white for a decade, and to have captained my country, is something I will carry with pride for the rest of my life.”

Despite stepping away from active duty, the former captain made it clear his bond with the Super Eagles remains intact.

He added: “However, as one chapter closes, my support for the Super Eagles will never fade. Watching Nigeria play with hunger, personality and belief filled me with pride. The talent is there, the spirit is strong, and I have no doubt the team will continue to inspire millions back home.”

Meanwhile, Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has sent a strong message  ahead of the ‘battle of Marrakech’, insisting the team remains focused on its own objectives rather than the strength of Algeria.

“I don’t care what opponent. We are just focusing on ourselves,” Onyeka said during his post-match interview  after the Super Eagles’ emphatic 4-0 defeat of Mozambique in their  16th Round encounter last Monday at the Complexe Sportif de Fès.

When pressed further, the combative midfielder doubled down on his stance. “That is it,” he added briefly, reinforcing Nigeria’s mind-set as one built on discipline, unity, and self-belief rather than fear of opposition.

Onyeka also provided a positive update on his fitness ahead of the quarter-final.

“I’m fully fit,” he confirmed, offering a boost to  coach Eric Chelle as Nigeria prepare for a crucial test against the Desert Warriors in their quest for the fourth  continental glory.

Indeed, this will not be a routine quarter-final  as history, form and emotion converge in Marrakech but one thing  certainty stands out for the two African giants.

While Nigeria seek revenge, continuity and a fourth AFCON crown, Algeria will  aim to maintain a tradition that has twice seen them defeat Nigeria on their  way to lifting the continental silverware.

But as Akpeyi warned, when elephants fight, the grass suffers. Tomorrow’s night in Marrakech, promises to be  an unforgettable spectacle.

From Diaz to ‘Mazadona’: Akor listed among five exciting new faces at AFCON

The Africa Cup of Nations reaches the quarter-final stage this weekend with a series of mouthwatering ties between the continent’s heavyweights. AFP Sport picks out five stars enjoying their first AFCON to look out for in the last eight:

    AKOR ADAMS (SEVILLA/NIGERIA)

The big 25-year-old striker is a great addition to a fearsome Nigerian attack led by Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.

Adams, who joined La Liga side Sevilla from Montpellier a year ago, was not part of the Super Eagles set-up until October, when he scored on his debut in World Cup qualifying against Lesotho.

He started the first two games in Morocco as Nigeria sealed a last-16 berth, before being rotated out of the team against Uganda. But he returned for the 4-0 demolition of Mozambique on Monday and played a starring role with a goal and an assist as Eric Chelle’s team set up a showdown with Algeria.

    BRAHIM DIAZ (REAL MADRID/MOROCCO)

Moroccans were perhaps pinning their hopes of Cup of Nations glory on home soil on skipper Achraf Hakimi. But while the African player of the year hardly featured in the group stage as he recovered from injury, Diaz wasted no time in becoming their key man.

Diaz, 26, has scored in every game including the crucial strike to beat Tanzania in the last 16. That makes him the tournament’s leading marksman on four goals.

Born in Malaga, Diaz was capped by Spain at full international level in 2021 but later switched allegiance to Morocco, from where his father hails. The ex-Manchester City and AC Milan winger broke into the Atlas Lions’ side shortly after the last AFCON in 2024 and will have an important part to play against Cameroon today.

    CHRISTIAN KOFANE (LEVERKUSEN/CAMEROON)

Cameroon appear to be in permanent turmoil these days but they have so far enjoyed a successful AFCON with a number of exciting young players to the fore. None more so than Kofane, the 19-year-old forward from Douala who joined Bayer Leverkusen ahead of this campaign from Albacete in Spain’s second tier.

Teenage forward Christian Kofane has wasted no time making an impact for Cameroon

He has started 10 games for Leverkusen this season, scoring against the likes of Borussia Dortmund and in the Champions League against PSV Eindhoven. Those performances convinced new Indomitable Lions coach David Pagou to include him in his squad to go to Morocco.

Kofane made his first appearance in the 1-1 draw with Cote d’Ivoire  before netting the winner against Mozambique in the final group game and then the goal that secured a 2-1 success over South Africa in the last 16.

    IBRAHIM MBAYE (PSG /SENEGAL)

The 17-year-old PSG winger hails from the suburbs of the French capital and represented France at youth international level before deciding in the run-up to the Cup of Nations to play for Senegal, his father’s country of origin.

Mbaye, who has made 20 appearances for European champions PSG this season, was therefore handed a debut for the Lions of Teranga in a November friendly defeat by Brazil.

He has gone on to have a significant impact for Senegal in Morocco, showing that he belongs among the likes of Sadio Mane and Iliman Ndiaye.

Mbaye came off the bench to set up his team’s equaliser in a 1-1 draw with DR Congo, and set up a goal as a substitute in the 3-0 win over Benin. Again appearing from the bench, Mbaye scored the third goal in the 3-1 win over Sudan in the last 16. His side face Mali in the last eight on Friday.

    IBRAHIM MAZA (LEVERKUSEN/ALGERIA):

“Mazadona” has been thrilling on Algeria’s run to the quarters. The 20-year-old Berlin-born attacking midfielder represented Germany as a youth but has Algerian heritage and opted in late 2024 to play for them after impressive performances for Hertha Berlin.

Maza, who joined Leverkusen ahead of this season for a reported 12 million euros ($14m), has had a huge impact for Algeria playing behind the striker.

He came off the bench to score in their opening win against Sudan and has started every game since, picking up the man of the match prize against Burkina Faso and finding the net against Equatorial Guinea. A future superstar.
