  • Scholars seek moral strategy to tackle insecurity

Scholars seek moral strategy to tackle insecurity

Scholars, clerics and academics have called for an embrace of Sufism as a moral and spiritual tool to address insecurity and social decay, stressing that inner reformation of individuals is key to building a peaceful society.

They spoke at the maiden Sufi Conference of Al-Munirat Arabic and Islamic Academy, with theme: “Sufism: A Spiritual Blueprint for Peace-Building and Security in Nigeria.”

Convener, Dr Sulaiman Algamawi, said the theme was was to draw government attention to the need for non-military approaches to insecurity.

“Beyond conventional methods of fighting insecurity, there is another tool with the capacity to restore peace in Nigeria, which is Sufism or Tasawwuf. Through Sufi training and ethics, insecurity can be reduced,”he said

He said the event is the first of intellectual engagements at correcting misconceptions about Sufism and repositioning it as a force for moral transformation and national stability.

“This is the maiden edition, and our plan is to hold it annually to bring together intellectuals. We can call this a national conference … In the next two years, we intend to make it international,”Algamawi said

He explained that Sufism goes beyond prayers, chanting or Qur’anic recitation saying its true essence lies in ethical training and moral discipline drawn from the Qur’an and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

“The ethics and implications of these spiritual practices are meant to shape the individual into someone who can make positive changes in society. When character is reformed, insecurity can be curbed, from personal behaviour, extending to the immediate environment and beyond,”he said.

Algamawi added that the academy organises Ramadan lectures, symposiums and counselling for students, particularly Arabic learners, to instil in them a sense of responsibility.

He appealed to individuals and organisations willing to support the initiative financially to partner the organisers.

Chair of the occasion, Dr. Saheed Timehin, a lecturer of Foreign Languages at Lagos State University, described Sufism as the inner dimension of Islamic principles.

“Sufism focuses on purification of the soul and ethical conduct. In reality, Sufi ethics are not different from standard Islamic ethics as taught by the Prophet. If properly practised, it transforms the soul, helping to re-orient society,”he said.

Timehin identified ignorance as the root of controversies surrounding Sufism, urging Sufi scholars to be more visible in the media and public space.

“When teachings remain confined to zawiyas, people misunderstand them, “Sufis must popularise their teachings. That is why I recommend that papers presented in Arabic should be translated into English so more people can benefit,” he said.

Dr Abubakar Salaty, a lecturer in Department of Arabic and Transnational Studies, University of Ilorin emphasised that genuine Sufism is firmly rooted in the Qur’an and the Sunnah.

“All Sufi scholars abide by the teachings of the Qur’an and the Sunnah “The Qur’an describes Prophet Muhammad (SAW) as the best of character, and decay of character leads directly to decay in society,” he said.

Salaty urged Islamic scholars, especially those in the Sufi tradition, to ensure their teachings align with Islamic sources, stressing that moral reform must begin from the home.

“Charity begins at home. Parents must train their children before they step out into society,” he said. “If values are not taught at home, society will teach them in another way.”

He further highlighted patience, hard work and lawful means of livelihood as core Islamic values, warning against the pursuit of quick wealth.

“Nothing good comes easy,” Salaty said. “Islam teaches dignity of labour and entrepreneurship. Even the Prophet worked with his hands. Moral decay and the desire for quick money are among the roots of our societal problems.”

  • Fed Govt secures release of Nigerian cleric jailed in Benin Republic

Fed Govt secures release of Nigerian cleric jailed in Benin Republic

The Federal Government has announced the release of Pastor Benjamin Egbaji, who was jailed in the Republic of Benin.

Egbaji, a businessman and cleric from Cross River State, was accused of sundry offences and detained in a hospital in Cotonou, under what was described as dehumanising conditions for over two years while his health deteriorated. He was later sent to prison.

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu announced his release in a statement.

According to the statement signed by the media aide to the minister, Mr. Magnus Eze, the release was as a result of diplomatic pressure.

The statement reads: “Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu has secured the release of a Nigerian, Pastor Benjamin Egbaji, incarcerated in the Republic of Benin.

“The minister disclosed that Egbaji was released on Thursday, January 8, following a Presidential Pardon by His Excellency, Patrice Talon.

“She noted that the gazetted presidential amnesty dated December 17, 2025, was on the heels of consistent diplomatic pressure from her office, including a visit to the detained citizen in a Cotonou hospital in August, last year.

“A viral photograph of the sick looking Nigerian chained to a hospital bed in the Republic of Benin had attracted umbrage from many Nigerians. This prompted immediate diplomatic moves to secure his release by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“Highly elated Odumegwu-Ojukwu attributed the diplomatic feat to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to citizen diplomacy as one of the thrusts of his administration’s Foreign Policy. The Diaspora component of the Four-Ds (Democracy, Demography, Diaspora and Development) foreign policy approach of the Renewed Hope Agenda centres on citizen diplomacy.

The minister, who spoke with the pastor on telephone shortly after he regained freedom, said he was in high spirit and deserved good medical care.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had called on the Beninois authorities to release the Nigerian so that he could have better medical care and also serve out his sentence in Nigeria.

The ministry had requested the transfer of the Nigerian to receive the deserved medical care and serve out his custodial term in Nigeria after Odumegwu-Ojukwu visited Egbaji in the Cotonou hospital alongside the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Olushegun Adjadi Bakari.

She had explained that Nigeria was worried over the pace of the Beninnoise authorities in addressing the situation and acceding to its request, not minding the longstanding cordial relations between the two countries, founded on shared cultural heritage, bonds of trust, mutual respect, and a spirit of brotherhood.

In a recent letter to the Foreign Affairs Minister of Republic of Benin, Odumegwu-Ojukwu had said: “It is against this backdrop of solidarity and mutual goodwill that I seek Your Excellency’s kind consideration regarding the plight of a Nigerian national, Pastor Benjamin Egbaji, who has been serving a custodial sentence in Cotonou since October 2023 for a jail term of 10 years. As Your Excellency may be aware, Pastor Egbaji has been in Benin Republic for over three decades, contributing meaningfully as an entrepreneur, pastor, and community leader.

“Regrettably, his health has deteriorated severely while in detention. Two independent medical experts appointed by the court recently recommended that he be transferred abroad for urgent medical care, as local interventions have proved ineffective.

“In the spirit of our longstanding friendship and in recognition of the humanitarian imperative, not being unmindful of the grievous nature of the offence he is charged with, we kindly request that Pastor Egbaji be repatriated to Nigeria to serve out the remainder of his sentence in a Nigerian Correctional Centre.”

The minister said this gesture would demonstrate in practical terms the enduring spirit of fraternity and cooperation that bind Nigeria and the Republic of Benin.

Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO), Republic of Benin chapter, Alhaji Mohammad Munir, commended the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs for her diplomacy leading to Egbaji’s release.

Munir said Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu has displayed commitment to the well-being of Nigerians in diaspora.

He praised President Tinubu for the effort in protecting Nigerians outside the shores of the country and urged that more diplomatic approaches be deployed especially in rescuing innocent Nigerians being incarcerated in foreign prisons.
