Firm’s chief ‘commits to more jobs, others

Chair of Agbeyewa Farms, Niyi Olajide, has restated the firm’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s agricultural value chain, expanding jobs creation, and deepening impact as agribusiness moves into 2026.

In his New Year message, Olajide noted that agriculture, when implemented with purpose and strategic investment — can transform lives, livelihoods and rural economies.

He explained that 2026 presents an opportunity for Agbeyewa Farms to scale its operations, strengthen local production systems, and further position agribusiness as a catalyst for inclusive growth and shared prosperity.

He said Agbeyewa Farms’ operations in Ekiti State are designed not only to cultivate crops, but to demonstrate potential of a fully integrated agricultural value chain to drive economic renewal, restore dignity to work, and enable sustainable livelihoods.

“We are here in Ekiti not simply to farm, but to build a strong cassava value chain that supports cultivation, aggregation, processing and agro-trading — creating value at every production,” he said.

He noted that this approach continues to create opportunities for farmers, processors, transporters, youth, and entrepreneurs across the agricultural ecosystem.

Olajide emphasised that job creation remains central to the company’s mission, particularly in enabling dignified and sustainable employment that empowers young Nigerians to see agriculture as a credible pathway to economic mobility and long-term opportunity.

Looking ahead to 2026, he revealed that Agbeyewa Farms will increase its investment in people through skills development initiatives, stronger partnerships with smallholder farmers, and the expansion of operational capacity across the value chain.

He added that the company will also deepen its footprint in Ekiti State, enhance processing capability, and lay the foundation for future expansion into new locations — guided by its commitment to leave every host community better than it was met.

Olajide appreciated the organisation’s employees, partners, host communities and the media for their trust and continued support, stating that their confidence reinforces Agbeyewa Farms’ dedication to responsible growth and operational excellence.

“The journey ahead is promising, and together, we will continue to create value, deliver lasting impact, and inspire the next generation,” he said.

He concluded by extending his best wishes for a prosperous New Year.

‘Professionalism, soft skills key to varsity success’

Professionalism is a daily practice, and soft skills are invisible drivers of institutional success, Dean of University of Lagos School of Postgraduate Studies, Prof. Abraham Osinubi, has said.

He spoke at the University of Lagos’ 2025 one-day staff workshop and end-of-year retreat.

The one-day event:  “Administration and Professionalism in the Workplace,” brought together academic and administrative staff to strengthen workplace ethics, enhance service delivery, and improve postgraduate student experience.

Osinubi highlighted the pivotal role of staff attitudes, character, and mindset in effective administration.

“Knowledge without character is fragile; skills without the right mindset are unsustainable. True professionalism is the harmonious blend of competence and conduct,” he said, emphasising that administrative staff are the first point of contact for students, faculty, partners, and stakeholders.

The dean noted that of approximately 60 members of staff in the school, only two are academic staff, underscoring the heavy reliance on administrative personnel. “Whatever somebody doesn’t have, they cannot give. To work effectively, we must empower and equip our administrative staff,” he said, urging participants to develop skills in communication, active listening, problem-solving, and professional responsiveness.

Prof. Osinubi reiterated that professionalism is a daily practice and soft skills are invisible drivers of institutional success. “Every interaction, whether at the front desk, in an office, or via email, shapes perceptions of our professionalism and credibility. In strengthening ourselves, we strengthen the institution. Without our students, we have no reason to be here,” he said.

The workshop featured insightful presentations by seasoned university administrators, beginning with the immediate past Sub-Dean, Dr. Adegboyega Ehinmowo, who spoke on “Student Experience: The Role of Soft and Engagement Skills.”

He stressed that beyond academic competence, students’ perception of the university is shaped by staff interactions. “Soft skills such as empathy, emotional intelligence, conflict management, and professionalism are personal abilities that can be learned and developed. Listening attentively and guiding students appropriately reflects professionalism and respect,” he said.

focused on workplace ethics, delivering a lecture on “Workplace Ethics: Enhancing Integrity and Building Lasting Trust.”

He described integrity, accountability, and professionalism as essential for effective university administration, noting that administrative staff co-create the student experience. “Postgraduate students face numerous pressures, from financial to emotional. Our role is to make their journey smoother, not harder,” he said.

The session also featured a presentation by the Director, Office of the Vice Chancellor, Mr. Abolade Akinwunmi, , who highlighted the importance of efficiency, effectiveness, and ethical conduct. “A professional administrator must combine strategic thinking, technical competence, and ethical principles to support institutional goals. Unethical practices, favoritism, or neglect of duties undermine both student trust and the university’s reputation,” he warned.

At the end of the workshop, the three facilitators were honoured with certificates of outstanding presentation by the Dean, recognising their contribution to staff development.

The SPGS workshop reflects UNILAG’s ongoing commitment to student-centred administration, aiming to equip staff with practical tools for immediate application in daily work, foster a positive workplace culture, and ensure the university maintains high standards of service excellence.

    •Lauds Fed Govt’s $200m Intervention Fund

Safe-Revive Africa has called on governments, communities and development partners to sustain commitment towards ending HIV/AIDS, despite disruptions in international funding.

The NGO spoke in a statement by its President, Dr. Oluremi Olaleye.

He noted that funding uncertainties from foreign donors had exposed fragility of Nigeria’s HIV response, stressing need for a more sustainable, domestically driven approach.

Olaleye said Nigeria has recorded progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS, with 1.9 million living with the virus and a 87-98-95 performance on global treatment targets.

He added that new HIV infections have declined by 46 per cent in the past decade, attributing the gains to the dedication of healthcare workers, resilience of affected communities and strong collaboration among government, civil society and development partners.

“As part of activities to mark the day, SRA  hosted its Fourth HIV/AIDS Sensitisation Forum for Community Workers in Lagos, bringing together frontline workers who play a critical role in HIV prevention, treatment support and community engagement. We identified three key priorities requiring urgent attention. We called for accelerated domestic resource mobilisation, lauding Federal Government’s $200 million intervention and urging sustained investment as Nigeria moves towards self-reliance in funding its HIV response,” he said.

Olaleye also stressed the need to eliminate stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV, noting that fear and misinformation continue to discourage many from accessing testing and treatment, despite advances in care.

SRA, he said, advocated adoption of innovative prevention tools, including injectable medications, to further reduce new infections, particularly among adolescent girls, young women, etc.

Reaffirming its commitment to health education and community empowerment,  the group said its sensitisation was designed to strengthen community ownership of the HIV response and address related public health challenges.

Olaleye urged Nigerians to honour those lost to AIDS-related illnesses, celebrate the progress recorded so far and recommit to achieving an AIDS-free Nigeria by 2030, stressing that with sustained commitment and collective action, the goal remains achievable.

President hails education reforms, urban renewal drive in Kano

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on today’s celebration of his 63rd birthday.

The President lauded the governor’s modesty, integrity and commitment to public service.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described Governor Yusuf’s administration as reflective of disciplined leadership and a strong sense of responsibility to the people, noting that his style of governance has reinforced Kano’s reputation as a centre of progressive politics in Northern Nigeria.

Governor Yusuf, who was elected in 2023 on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), previously served as Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport between 2011 and 2015 during the administration of Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso.

President Tinubu observed that Yusuf’s leadership in Kano echoes the historic struggle for social justice and grassroots empowerment championed by the late Aminu Kano, particularly in improving the welfare of the talakawa—the ordinary people.

“Governor Yusuf’s leadership experience, particularly his years as commissioner, managing strategic portfolios in Kano State, may have prepared him for the kind of infrastructural changes now witnessed in the state,” the President said.

He noted that the governor has embarked on ambitious urban renewal programmes, including the construction of bridges and road networks across the state.

“He has embarked on urban renewal programmes, building bridges and road networks, including the five-kilometre roads in each local government in the state,” Tinubu added.

The President also lauded Yusuf’s declaration of a state of emergency in the education sector, describing it as a decisive intervention with visible results.

“I also understood that his declaration of emergency in education has engendered a marked improvement in the performance of Kano students in National Examinations Council (NECO) exams,” he said.

President Tinubu wished the Kano governor a long life and many more years of impactful service, expressing confidence that his administration would continue to deliver transformative leadership for the benefit of the people of the state.

•1,000 Abia residents get food items

pro-President Bola Ahmed Tinubu group, Southeast Renewed Hope Agenda (SERHA), has vowed to work for President Tinubu’s victory in Southeast in 2027 general election.

The group distributed food items to over 1,000 residents drawn from the state’s 17 local governments.

The exercise in Umuahia, the state capital, was led by Southeast Coordinator, Belusochukwu Enwere.

He said although the exercise might not address all challenges facing the people, it sent a message that leadership must be attentive and responsive to citizens’ needs.

“Our dear President is doing that for the people,” he said.

He noted that the group will intensify political mobilisation ahead of 2027 elections.

“We want to state that from January we will tour all nooks and crannies of every ward and local government to mobilise support for the re-election of Mr President,” he said.

“To the people of Abia, I assure you Southeast Renewed Hope Agenda remains steadfast in its commitment to initiatives that uplift livelihoods, empower communities and strengthen unity in Southeast.”

Enwere said the exercise was a demonstration of the group’s shared commitment to compassion, solidarity and people-centred leadership.

He noted that the Renewed Hope Agenda is anchored on the principle that governance must be responsive to needs of the people, particularly at the grassroots, a commitment he said Tinubu has shown.

“This intervention is a modest but meaningful effort to support households and ease the burden on people,” he said.

“Food security remains a pressing issue in communities. Women, children, the elderly and other vulnerable groups are often the most affected.

“Today’s distribution is not merely about sharing food; it is about restoring hope, promoting dignity and reinforcing the spirit of togetherness that defines us as a people.”

Noting the economic and political importance of Abia State, Enwere said the state is known for its resilience, enterprise and strong community values.

“These qualities inspire our continued engagement with the people through practical initiatives that improve welfare and promote inclusive development,” he added.

Abia Coordinator, Hillary Adibe, lauded Tinubu’s efforts in steering the country towards progress and renewed prosperity.

Adibe reaffirmed the group’s commitment to supporting the President and the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the national, state and regional levels.

He also expressed appreciation to the President for providing employment opportunities and empowerment programmes, including grants, to party members in the state, noting that the initiatives have brought hope and relief to many families.

Some of the beneficiaries, including Mr Ifeanyi and Mrs Chinyere, described the palliatives as timely and expressed gratitude to the organisers, pledging their continued support for the APC and President Tinubu.

PDP factional BoT Chairman woos Otti to join party for re-election bid

The factional Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Adolphus Wabara, has expressed optimism that Abia State Governor Alex Otti will defect to the party to contest for a second term in 2027.

Otti is the only Labour Party (LP) governor in the country.

Addressing reporters in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, Wabara described Otti as a “major asset” to any political platform.

The PDP BoT chairman stated that the party would readily field Otti as its governorship candidate should he decide to defect from LP.

He noted that the growing interest in Otti emanated from various political parties to his impressive performance in office, particularly highlighting the governor’s recent launch of a 25-year Abia Development Plan as a visionary roadmap for a “New and Greater Abia”.

Wabara applauded Otti’s achievements across sectors, including road infrastructure, specifically the reconstruction of the long-abandoned Port Harcourt Road in Aba, as well as healthcare, education, industry, and security.

The former Senate President also hailed the Abia governor for his administration’s procurement of electric buses for urban mass transit scheme, saying it would ease economic hardships for residents.

“As an elder statesman and stakeholder in Abia politics, I have a moral duty to acknowledge good governance, irrespective of party affiliation,” Wabara said.

According to him, Abia residents are now eager to visit home due to visible transformations Otti has carried out across the sectors.

He stressed that good governance should transcend partisan politics and reiterated that he had been vindicated for earlier applauding Otti’s handling of the Port Harcourt Road project, despite criticism from some quarters.

Wabara urged the governor to seriously consider joining the PDP, citing an “instigated leadership tussle” in the Labour Party and arguing that the PDP’s national spread and capacity would provide a stronger platform to counter any antics from the ruling party in 2027.

The PDP BoT chairman claimed that the Southeast has remained a traditional PDP stronghold and that Otti’s defection would bolster the party’s prospects in the zone.

He also announced ongoing efforts by PDP elders to rebrand the party under the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) and make it more attractive ahead of 2027.

Taking a broader view on national issues, Wabara called for unity to ensure that Nigeria does not become a one-party state.

The PDP stalwart hailed the House of Representatives for approving mandatory electronic transmission of election results.

Expressing confidence in the PDP’s resurgence, the former Senate President declared the party’s “gloomy days are over” and predicted that defectors would soon return, while forecasting an inevitable implosion in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

  • I will never give up on Nigeria, says Hashim

I will never give up on Nigeria, says Hashim

A former presidential candidate, Dr. Gbenga Hashim, has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to Nigeria.

He promised not to surrender in the struggle to see the country get better, despite the nation’s deepening political, economic, and security challenges.

Hashim spoke in Abuja at a Northcentral zonal meeting of the Gbenga Hashim Solidarity Movement, which brought together state coordinators from across the region.

Addressing the gathering, Hashim said Nigeria’s current realities demand steadfast leadership, an organised civic engagement and citizens who are willing to remain involved rather than retreat into apathy or despair. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart warned that abandoning the country would amount to handing its future over to mediocrity, impunity and misrule.

According to him, national renewal requires discipline, clarity of purpose and sustained grassroots organization.

Hashim stressed that meaningful change is never accidental but the product of deliberate and collective effort.

He urged the coordinators to deepen community-level engagement while remaining anchored to the core values of accountability, justice and national unity.

The meeting reviewed the state of the movement across the Northcentral zone, assessed ongoing mobilisation efforts and agreed on strategies to strengthen coordination and expand the movement’s reach within the region.

The coordinators at the meeting reaffirmed their commitment to the vision of a Nigeria governed by competence, integrity and inclusiveness, pledging to intensify grassroots organisation and political education across their respective states.

Hashim recalled his long history of political advocacy, which began at the age of 14 when he became a sympathiser of progressive parties of the era.

“We were not of voting age then, but we pasted posters and sang with excitement,” he said. “As a young boy, I engaged an NPN representative to the National Assembly, who was a family friend, in discussions about economic management based on my rudimentary knowledge of economics and government.”

Hashim stated that his early activism set him on the path of advocacy for democracy and good governance. This journey later led to his detention as a political detainee at the age of 20.

“Almost 40 years later, we are still standing,” Hashim said. “We will not give up until we see the Nigeria of our dreams, by the grace of God.”

Hashim also urged members to remind Nigerians, particularly the youth, of the country’s past economic strengths and future possibilities.

“Tell the people that in 1966, Nigeria’s economy was twice the size of Malaysia’s and bigger than those of Thailand and Indonesia,” he said. “Remind them how Nigeria assembled cars and tractors and produced vaccines at the Yaba Vaccine Centre. Let young people know that jobs through industrialisation are possible, as we had before, and that they are not condemned to a life dependent on palliatives. Tell them about our $4 trillion plan for economic transformation,” Hashim added.

The attendees renewed their determination among members to strengthen organisation, sustain advocacy and remain firm in the belief that Nigeria could still be rescued through principled leadership and collective action.
