PSSDC chief eyes public service university

Director-General of Public Service Staff Development Centre (PSSDC), Lagos, Adekunmilola Adio-Moses, has outlined a long-term vision for the institution to evolve into a public service university, as part of efforts to strengthen civil service capacity and modernise governance in the state.

“The idea for PSSDC is to become a public service university, a citadel of learning that the whole world can be proud of,” he said. “We want it to be a place where ideas are generated, tested, refined and used to strengthen governance and public service delivery.”

Adio-Moses said the concept is rooted in lifelong learning, with a focus on equipping civil servants with practical skills required for a modern, technology-driven public sector, with a goal to create an environment where innovation, policy research and leadership development can thrive.

Since assuming office on January 4, 2023, he said his mandate has been to implement reforms outlined in its transformation roadmap developed in collaboration with international partners.

“When I came in, there was a vision of what PSSDC should become. My responsibility was to bring those ideas into reality and ensure the institution moves in that direction.”

A major focus of the transformation has been infrastructure and technology. The centre has upgraded its digital backbone, including installation of underground fibre-optic cables to support Internet access. Classrooms have been redesigned to support computer-based learning and assessments.

As part of this process, a block of classrooms was converted into a computer-based test facility equipped with hundreds of computers, allowing the centre to deliver modern training programmes aligned with global standards.

“You cannot run a learning institution in today’s world without strong digital infrastructure,” he said. “If people are going to come here to learn, the environment must reflect the future, not the past.”

The centre also invested in improving accommodation, recreational facilities and learning spaces to provide a holistic experience that supports intellectual development and personal wellbeing.

He attributed the pace of development to sustained backing from Lagos State through its T.H.E.M.E.S. initiative.

On training programmes, he disclosed that PSSDC currently runs 166 certification programmes covering sectors such as law, agriculture, economics and more, particularly for local government staff, adding that demand for these programmes continues to grow. Some participants, he noted, personally fund their training, reflecting a strong appetite for professional advancement within the public service.

Adio-Moses  also revealed that the centre has begun attracting international attention, with foreign institutions exploring potential partnerships and training collaborations. As PSSDC marks over 30 years since its establishment, he said the institution is entering a decisive phase, one focused on consolidation, expansion and long-term relevance.

The auspices through its state Chairman, Adekunle Adedayo, addressing reporters yesterday at the NUJ Correspondents Chapel, Osogbo berated the leadership of NULGE led by Dr Kehinde Ogungbangbe for playing a partisan role during local government control crisis between executives of All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

NULGE embarked on strike since February 17, 2025, but last month, it directed members to resume today and called on HLAs to take over the running of the councils.

Reacting to the development, Adedayo noted that his faction had been working with the APC-led council executives under peaceful atmosphere with their salary being paid promptly.

He cited that several Supreme Court authorities objected to a call by NULGE president that councils should be run by HLAs, saying “political governance at the local government level cannot be exercised by non-political, unelected officers.

“Therefore, HLGA assuming political power will amount to: Usurpation of democratic authority and abuse of office.

APC chieftain rallies support for Tinubu’s tax reform

A chieftain of All Progressives Congress, Prince Akintade Olayisade, has urged Nigerians to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s tax reform agenda, describing it as a bold step toward strengthening the nation’s economy and improving governance.

Speaking with reporters yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, he said the reforms were timely and aimed at tackling persistent fiscal challenges such as revenue leakages, weak tax administration and the country’s over reliance on oil revenue.

The Federal Commissioner of the Public Complaints Commission (PCC) in Ekiti State said the initiative would help to broaden the tax base, improve transparency and create a more efficient and equitable tax system capable of driving sustainable development.

He noted that enhanced revenue generation would enable government to fund key sectors, including infrastructure, education, health care, security and social welfare, with positive effects on citizens’ living standards.

He called on Nigerians to embrace the reforms and comply with tax regulations, noting that active civic participation was crucial to national development.

Governor Okpebholo threatens to revoke road contract

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has threatened to revoke the 1.4-kilometre Charismatic (Church) Road project at Ekhenwa, if the contractor fails to execute the contract according to specifications.

The project is being executed by Place of Peace Investment Ltd.

Governor Okpebholo issued the threat while inspecting road projects in Edo South Senatorial District.

Besides the 1.4-kilometre Charismatic (Church) Road project, Governor Okpebholo also inspected Old Sapele Road linking Agip, Ohogbohi and Ogheghe communities, Ogheghe Road off Sapele Road and Sapele Road Bypass.

He hailed some of the contractors for delivering quality jobs, warning those lagging behind to sit up or risk losing their contracts.

He said his administration was pushing to ensure timely delivery and value for public funds.

The governor said the inspection was necessary to separate serious contractors from those failing to meet agreed standard and deadline.

He said some contractors had shown commitment and professionalism.

Okpebholo said his administration would not tolerate unnecessary delay.

“We’ve gone round several places today. We were at Church Road, Upper Ekenwan Road and we were not too happy with the contractor there. We have made our observations known to the contractor on the need to meet with specifications and by the time we return next time and nothing has happened the way we want it, we can revoke the contract.

“We have gone to three other places and I can see that everything is going on well. I am very happy with the contractor handling the job at Ogheghe. They are doing a very good job. I am also very happy with the contractor handling this Sapele Road. They are doing a very good job.

“We will continue to monitor these projects closely even at weekends. We won’t waste time because there is no time. The rainy season is almost here, and if we are not working, that means nothing will be achieved,’’ he added.

  • 2026: Ekiti APC dismisses allegation over deputy governor’s certificate

2026: Ekiti APC dismisses allegation over deputy governor’s certificate

Ekiti State chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has dismissed as baseless and politically- motivated, the controversy trailing the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) certificate of the Deputy Governor and APC deputy governorship candidate, Mrs Monisade Afuye, ahead of the June 20 governorship election.

The controversy followed the release of particulars of governorship candidates and their deputies by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which showed Mrs Afuye sat for the WAEC examination in June 1978 at Amoye Grammar School, Ikere-Ekiti.

The deputy governor obtained credits in Literature-in-English and Economics and passes in History and Mathematics.

Ekiti APC Publicity Secretary, Segun Dipe, dismissed the allegations as a desperate attempt by the opposition parties to gain relevance ahead of the election.

The party spokesman accused Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Action Democratic Congress (ADC) of sensationalising the issue to undermine public confidence in the ruling party, insisting Afuye met all constitutional requirements to contest as deputy governor.

Dipe said Afuye’s academic credentials were duly screened and cleared by the party and relevant authorities, stressing that the deputy governor had served the state diligently since assuming office.

He added that the APC would not be distracted by the antics of PDP and ADC, urging the opposition parties to focus on presenting their alternatives to Ekiti voters, rather than resorting to what he termed smear campaigns and recycled allegations.

However, the development has continued to attract criticism from the opposition parties.

The Southwest PDP Publicity Secretary, Chief Sanya Atofarati, in a statement yesterday, described the development as embarrassing and a “slap” on Ekiti State, which he said was widely regarded as a centre of academic excellence.

“This is a source of embarrassment for all Ekiti people. A state widely celebrated for academic excellence and intellectual prowess deserves better. It is disheartening that the APC is presenting a candidate with such a record for the sensitive office of deputy governor.

“Imagine someone who today submits a low-level and an unconvincing school certificate being expected tomorrow to represent a governor at meetings of professors and technocrats. What exactly does such a person have to offer?

“Ekiti is known nationwide as a state of scholars, a state with one of the highest concentrations of professors. It is often said, jokingly but truthfully, that almost every household has a professor. Is it not dehumanising for such a people to be represented by a mere school certificate holder?” he queried.

Similarly, Ekiti State Publicity Secretary of ADC, Gboyega Aribisogan, faulted the O’Level result submitted by Mrs Afuye to INEC, citing what he described as unresolved doubts about its authenticity.

He said Ekiti State regarded for its academic reputation, should not be led by people with questionable credentials and low education, recalling that similar concerns were raised in 2022 when she emerged as APC deputy governorship candidate.

He said: “This is not the first time these questions are coming up. As far back as 2022, when she was announced as a deputy governorship candidate of the APC, even members of her party openly discussed the doubts surrounding her qualification.

“At a point, a group of people went to the archives to verify whether she truly sat for GCE. What later emerged was that she did not complete her education at Amoye Grammar School, Ikere-Ekiti which she claimed to have attended.

“Her colleagues from school reportedly said she did not finish there. Rather, she sat for GCE outside the school, and that is where the problem of a doubtful certificate started.

“Many of our professionals and alumni spoke out against her nomination then, but because of the dictatorial tendencies within the APC structure at the time, the issue was swept under the carpet and she was imposed as deputy governor.

“As we head for another governorship election, our people are talking again. At the appropriate time, people will do the needful and this can lead to another round of litigation that may truncate the ambition of both the governor and the deputy governor.”
