    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday released the provisional list of governorship and deputy governorship candidates for the June 20, 2026 Ekiti State election. 

    The list, posted at the INEC office along New Iyin Road in Ado-Ekiti, features contenders from 12 political parties.

    The All Progressives Congress (APC) is fielding the incumbent governor, Biodun Oyebanji (58), with Monisade Afuye (67) as his running mate. Other notable candidates include Opeyemi Falegan (41) of the Accord Party with Omoyemi Olaleye (42); Akande Oluwasegun (36) of the African Action Congress with Oluwasanmi Fajuyigbe; and Ayodeji Ojo (42) of the Action Democratic Party with Itunu Ibitoye (35).

    The African Democratic Congress (ADC) presents Oluwadare Bejide (66) and Paul Olowoyeye (52), while the Action People’s Party (APP) fields Bidemi Awogbemi (36) and Akinyemi Adewumi (53). Other parties on the list include the Allied People’s Movement, Labour Party, New Nigeria People’s Party, People’s Redemption Party, Young Progressive Party, and Zenith Labour Party.

    However, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates, Dr. Wole Oluyede and his deputy, were absent from the provisional list. 

    Sources at INEC indicated that the omission is due to unresolved court cases concerning the party’s leadership.

    INEC has stated that it will update the list on January 19, 2026, in accordance with the Electoral Act 2022, as parties finalise substitutions and resolve legal issues ahead of the election.

    A 43-year-old man, identified as Eghosa Osas, has been allegedly killed by his childhood friend, Amadin William, under circumstances yet to be determined.

    The victim was said to have returned from abroad to celebrate Christmas with his family before he was attacked and killed in the Oben community, where he had attended a housewarming party.

    Confirming the incident, the Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, said the case was reported by the victim’s elder brother.

    According to her, Eghosa had excused himself from the gathering when the suspect allegedly cornered him and inflicted a machete cut on his neck.

    She added that the suspect fled the scene but was later arrested in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

    Ikoedem said the suspect would be charged in court after the completion of investigations.

    The institution also facilitated the creation of over 520,000 jobs, impacting more than three million lives across rural and urban communities.

    The institution, in a statement on Sunday, said the interventions strengthened industrial capacity utilisation, supported farmers to expand production, deepened market access, and preserved value across agricultural value chains through risk-sharing, insurance advocacy, incentive mechanisms, and technical assistance.

    According to performance records, NIRSAL facilitated N298.49 billion in credit through its Risk Sharing Facility during the period, issued 949 guarantees, and supported 251 agribusinesses, with a non-performing loan ratio of less than 0.8 percent. In addition, over 449,000 agricultural value chain actors were trained, more than 159,000 jobs were supported, and about 795,000 lives were directly impacted through programme interventions.

    NIRSAL Plc also developed more than 20 agribusiness models and tools, trained over 2,000 financial institution staff and more than 303 value chain actors, and facilitated N33.9 billion through programme management initiatives. 

    Its insurance advocacy drive led to the introduction of five index insurance products, onboarding of nine insurance firms, issuance of 1.8 million index insurance policies, and over N5.2 billion in insurance payouts, with N4.6 billion in claims paid and N4.2 billion recovered. Through its incentive mechanism, NIRSAL processed $1.8 million in interest drawback payments to 386 obligors.

    Closing 2025 with its highest annual finance facilitated to date, NIRSAL announced that total approved credit guarantees for the year surpassed N100 billion in loans and investments in agriculture and agribusiness nationwide.

    The feat enabled partner banks and lending institutions to extend credit to value chain activities that would otherwise be considered too risky for on-balance sheet exposure.

    The institution said the performance demonstrates steady progress in de-risking agricultural lending, improving access to finance for agribusinesses, strengthening lender confidence in the sector, and deepening financial inclusion across the agriculture-to-market ecosystem.

    In recognition of these outcomes, NIRSAL received the MSME Agrifinance Enabler of the Year Award at the 2nd Edition of the MSME Finance & CEO Awards held in Lagos state.

    Speaking at the event, NIRSAL’s Managing Director/CEO, Sa’ad Hamidu, said the recognition “speaks to the power of structured risk-sharing models, strong partnerships with financial institutions, and the resilience of Nigeria’s agribusiness entrepreneurs.” He was represented by Akinola Baiyewu, NIRSAL’s Regional Head, South, Business Development Group.

    Hamidu added that the organisation is “not chasing after awards, but is focused on drawing the attention of potential partners across the agrifinance value chain to NIRSAL’s value proposition for safe, profitable, and sustainable investments in Nigeria’s agriculture sector.”

    NIRSAL’s partnerships with commercial banks and other lenders supported commodity exports, agro-processing, input supply, primary production, storage, warehousing, and logistics. Through technical assistance programmes, field monitoring, and project mapping protocols, the institution said it continued to unlock opportunities for farmers, processors, aggregators, and market actors.

    On its role as a facilitator rather than a lending house, the Managing Director explained that substantial financial capital exists within the financial system to transform agriculture, but inherent value chain risks often discourage lending. 

    He said the N100 billion milestone recorded in 2025 represents a shift from caution to stronger confidence among lenders, driven by NIRSAL’s credit risk guarantees and risk management frameworks that assure banks of viable portfolio performance.

    Financial institutions, he noted, are increasingly relying on NIRSAL’s risk-sharing tools to grow agricultural portfolios, optimise capital deployment, and pursue both commercial and development outcomes.

    To date, the institution has signed 41 master agreements with counterparties willing to jointly finance agriculture and agribusiness across the country.

    NIRSAL also strengthened its role in mobilising alternative finance for agriculture. As a Delivery Partner to the Green Climate Fund (GCF) for climate finance readiness, it is delivering capacity development programmes across Nigeria, with optimism that the country will attract sizable climate finance inflows to support climate-smart agriculture and resilience-building initiatives.

    Drawing from lessons learned through national and sub-national smallholder financing schemes, the organisation refined its programme management offerings for state governments, private agribusiness investors, and cooperative-led primary production clusters.

    The refined approach includes improved protocols for farmer onboarding, capacity-building, geo-mapping, soil testing, and mechanisation support aimed at boosting productivity and production outcomes.

    Looking ahead to 2026, NIRSAL said it will continue to expand its finance facilitation footprint, support climate-smart agriculture, enhance sectoral resilience, and improve the competitiveness of Nigeria’s agribusiness ecosystem.

    “Our journey is far from over,” Hamidu said. “In fact, it is only just beginning. We will continue to innovate, deepen partnerships, and scale solutions that reduce risks and unlock finance for Nigeria’s agriculture sector. With the support of our Board of Directors and the dedication of our people, 2026 will see NIRSAL further scale its contribution towards agriculture transformation.”

    The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Lagos State Command, has received popular Nigerian music star, Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, alongside social commentator Otse Vincent, also known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).

    The duo paid a courtesy visit to the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, Apapa, Lagos, to seek information on legal procedures that would facilitate the discharge of inmates through the payment of fines.

    In a statement on Sunday, the authorities of the custodial centre said the visit was aimed at obtaining first-hand information on the legal and administrative processes involved in releasing inmates eligible for discharge through fine payments, in line with existing laws and correctional regulations.

    The Public Relations Officer of the centre, Osho Onimisi Joseph, said the visitors were received by the newly appointed Officer-in-Charge, Deputy Controller of Corrections, Sanni Richard.

    According to Joseph, Burna Boy and VeryDarkMan were given professional guidance and detailed clarification on procedures relating to fine payments, eligibility criteria, and the legal safeguards put in place to ensure transparency, accountability, and strict compliance with judicial directives.

    A notorious drug trafficker Nwobodo Chidiebere Basil previously convicted of dealing in 30.10kg methamphetamine in 2023 has again been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) following the seizure of 75 parcels of cocaine weighing 1.50 kilograms concealed in factory sealed sachets of cold-water starch heading to the United Kingdom at the export shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Ikeja Lagos.

    Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA Headquarters, AbujaFemi Babafemi, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

    Babafemi said three cargo agents: Jubrin Firdausi Hassana, Kuku Daniel Oluwasegun, and Igwe Chioma Jane involved in the attempt to export the consignment to the UK, were swiftly arrested on Saturday, 20th December 2025, before further investigations unravelled 37-year-old Nwobodo Chidiebere Basil as the mastermind.

    Babafemi said he was arrested in a follow-up operation on Sunday, 21st December, at a popular relaxation centre in Ikeja, where he went on a date with his girlfriend.

    “The agency’s criminal database revealed that Nwobodo had been arrested in May 2023 in connection with the seizure of 30.10kg of methamphetamine concealed in powdered custard containers as part of a consolidated cargo going to London, United Kingdom, at the export shed of the Lagos airport.

    “He was subsequently arraigned at a Federal High Court in charge number: FHC/L/337C/2023, convicted and sentenced to five years imprisonment with an option of a fine of Seven Million Naira (₦7,000,000.00), along with one-month community service, with effect from 4th December, 2023. He paid the fine and soon after returned to the same crime, “Babafemi said

    ‎He said another successful operation, NDLEA operatives on Monday, 22nd December set ablaze tons of skunk, a strain of cannabis, and wooden warehouses in Ara forest, Ara-Ekiti, where 638 kilograms of the same psychoactive substance were also recovered.

    He said no fewer than 1,205 blocks of compressed cannabis sativa, weighing 883.1kg, were recovered from three Toyota Camry vehicles intercepted by NDLEA operatives on patrol along Igara-Auchi road, Edo state, on Monday, 22nd December.

    The statement reads, “In Cross River state, raid operations conducted on Sunday, 21st December at Agoi-Ibami community, Yakurr LGA, led to the arrest of three suspects and seizure of various quantities of skunk. They include: Freedom Jonah Akpama, 27, with 671kg; David Itam David, 30, with 89kg; and Nelson Arikpo Osam, 26, with 148kg. In another operation, a 42-year-old lady, Joy Oisamaye, was arrested with 38kg skunk by NDLEA operatives on patrol along Abaji- Abuja expressway on Monday, 22nd December, on her way from Otua in Owan East LGA, Edo state.

    “While NDLEA operatives in Lagos arrested a female suspect, Ajoke Dauda, with 45.5kg of skunk on Christmas day, Thursday 25th December at Agbara, along Badagry expressway, another suspect, Oluwasegun Felix, was nabbed with 18.5kg of the same substance at Itoga, Badagry, the previous day, Wednesday 24th December. In the Takum area of Taraba state, two other suspects, Emmanuel Danladi, 39, and John Onoja, 41, were nabbed with 48kg of the same substance on Wednesday, 24th and Tuesday, 23rd December, respectively.

    “In Gombe state, a 65-year-old driver, Sada’u Mohammed, was arrested while conveying 300 ampoules of pentazocine injection, 27,900 pills of tramadol, and other opioids, along the Gombe-Biu highway, heading to Biu in Borno state.

    “Meanwhile, a 47-year-old businessman, Ignatius Egbochie (alias  Brown), wanted in connection with the seizure of 56 parcels of Loud, a strain of cannabis, weighing 26kg at the Tincan seaport in Lagos, has been arrested by NDLEA operatives. The illicit drug consignment was seized on 10th December during a joint examination of a container by NDLEA, Customs, and other security agencies.  A follow-up operation by NDLEA operatives on 19th December led to the arrest of Ignatius in Apapa.

    “Across all Commands and formations of the Agency nationwide, NDLEA officers continued their War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitization activities in schools, worship centres, workplaces, and communities, among others, in the past week. These include: WADA enlightenment lecture to students and staff of Destiny Child Academy, Nkpor, Anambra, during their holiday skills acquisition training; women and teachers at Makaratar Mata Tatunawa da Marigayi Mustapha Nuhu, Kuki Gawo, Dutsinma LGA, Katsina, and youths of Odokoro-Gbede, Ijumu LGA, Kogi state, among others.

    The Southern Nigeria Youth Congress (SNYC) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to order the arrest, thorough investigation, and prosecution of Sheikh Ahmad Gumi over statements it said justify, rationalise, or enable terrorism.

    The youth group commended President Tinubu, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and security agencies for renewed efforts in the fight against terrorism, but warned that the menace would persist unless alleged sympathisers and sponsors of terrorists are identified, investigated, and prosecuted.

    The group expressed hope that the intensified military actions and improved inter-agency cooperation signalled what it described as a much-needed shift towards seriousness in tackling insecurity.

    Speaking at the weekend in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, the President General of SNYC, Comrade Emordi Caleb, said Nigeria must send a clear message locally and internationally that it is not a haven for bandits, terrorists, or their defenders.

    He condemned recent comments attributed to Sheikh Gumi on the United States bomb strike on terrorist enclaves in northern Nigeria, describing them as sympathetic to criminal elements and a direct threat to national security.

    “Nigerians must confront an uncomfortable truth,” he said. “If similar statements were repeatedly made by a southerner or anyone outside certain privileged circles, the full weight of the security apparatus would be swiftly deployed. Selective enforcement of national security weakens unity, undermines justice, erodes public trust, and sends the wrong message that some voices are untouchable, even when national security is at stake.”

    Nigeria’s health sector recorded limited progress in 2025, with weak policy focus, persistent workforce crises, and poor financing continuing to undermine healthcare delivery, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Lagos State chapter, has said.

    In a year-end review of federal government health sector activities, the NMA Lagos chairman, Dr. Saheed Babajide Kehinde, in a statement issued on Sunday, described the performance of the sector as “highly unfortunate, unacceptable, and disappointing,” blaming what he called a lack of clear priorities by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and insufficient political attention to healthcare delivery.

    According to the association, the year was marked by an absence of decisive interventions to address the worsening “Japa syndrome”, the mass emigration of healthcare professionals, alongside poor remuneration, weak welfare packages, and inadequate training opportunities for health workers.

    Dr. Kehinde noted that industrial disputes dominated much of the year, with the Federal Government struggling to manage recurring strike actions by health sector unions and professional bodies. These disruptions, he said, repeatedly denied citizens access to essential healthcare services.

    He also faulted the ministry’s perceived emphasis on data collection, research, and engagement with international partners, arguing that this focus came at the expense of strengthening the core healthcare delivery system, particularly at the primary healthcare level.

    Nigeria’s health indices remained troubling in 2025, the NMA said, citing poor progress toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC), low health insurance penetration, and the rising cost of healthcare services. High prices of drugs, consumables, medical equipment, and diagnostic services have continued to place care beyond the reach of many Nigerians.

    Other persistent challenges highlighted in the review include poor budgetary allocation to the health sector, low healthcare financing, unreliable power supply to health institutions, and weak attention to primary healthcare, which is meant to serve as the foundation of the country’s health system.

    The association acknowledged modest gains in health infrastructure development, particularly in hospital buildings, but stressed that physical structures alone cannot deliver quality healthcare without adequate staffing, equipment, power supply, and sustainable financing.

    Looking ahead, the NMA Lagos outlined a comprehensive reform agenda it believes should define the federal government’s health priorities in 2026.

    Top of the list is the introduction of better living wages and improved remuneration for healthcare workers, alongside enhanced welfare packages aimed at retaining skilled professionals in the country.

    To curb the Japa syndrome, the association proposed a mix of incentives, including affordable housing and car loans, regular training and retraining, clear career progression pathways, access to modern equipment, overseas training opportunities, and more worker-friendly policies. It also called for a halt to assaults on healthcare workers and demanded non-taxable call duty allowances.

    On service delivery, the NMA urged the government to make healthcare more accessible, affordable, and qualitative by expanding UHC, reforming health insurance policies, and reducing the cost of care through lower tariffs on medical equipment and consumables, as well as price control measures on essential drugs.

    The association also renewed its call for the implementation of the extended retirement age for healthcare workers, stronger prioritisation of primary healthcare, and deeper collaboration between government and private hospitals to reduce mortality and improve access.

    Other recommendations include improving power supply to health institutions, reviewing health sector budgetary allocation from about six per cent to the 15 per cent target set under the Abuja Declaration, and ensuring transparency and efficiency in the use of health funds.

    Dr. Kehinde further urged the Minister of Health to adopt a more inclusive and respectful approach to industrial relations, noting that unresolved strikes, such as those involving the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), have had severe consequences for patients.

    He also advocated the establishment of specialist hospitals across the six geopolitical zones, including infectious disease centres, and improved security and working conditions to reduce burnout and mental stress among healthcare workers.

    The 2025 review underscores long-standing structural challenges in Nigeria’s health sector and sets a clear benchmark for performance in 2026.

    For the federal government, health experts say the coming year will be a defining test of its willingness to move beyond policy rhetoric and deliver concrete reforms that place healthcare workers and patients at the centre of national development.

    An Igbo socio-cultural group, the Ndi Na Asu Bia Socio-Cultural Organisation (NNABSCO), has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and South-East lawmakers in the National Assembly to promote and facilitate the creation of Anioma State.

    The patron of NNABSCO, Chief Cosmas Chikeobi Agada, appealed during a recent interview in Asaba, the Delta State capital, where he highlighted growing momentum towards the proposed state aimed at strengthening the political and administrative representation of the Anioma people.

    Agada said the push for Anioma State gained renewed energy following a successful solidarity rally in Asaba, during which a coalition representing the nine local government areas in the Delta North Senatorial District demonstrated strong support for the initiative.

    He noted that participants at the rally, including youths and community leaders, expressed a clear desire for Anioma State to be zoned to the South-East geopolitical zone, describing the move as consistent with broader regional aspirations for improved governance and development.

    “The call for action was directed not only at South-East legislators but also to key political leaders, including President Bola Tinubu and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, urging them to use their influence to promote and facilitate the passage of the necessary legislation,” Agada said.

    According to him, the rally attracted participants from Anioma and Ika-speaking communities in Edo State, underscoring cross-border support for the state creation project and a shared commitment to political autonomy and better resource allocation for the Anioma people.

    Agada, who hails from the South-East, described Anioma State as a pathway to reclaiming lost Igbo territories. He said that despite some setbacks, the overall process remained on course.

    While appealing to South-East leaders to work towards the success of the bill, he commended Ohaneze Ndigbo for endorsing the Anioma State project.

    “We are pleading with South-East legislators to put aside personal interests and consider the collective interest of the Igbo people by supporting the creation of Anioma State as a first step towards reintegrating our people who are marooned in other zones,” he said.

    Agada explained that the bill was currently at the caucus stage in the National Assembly, where the positions and votes of lawmakers were critical in determining which proposed states would advance.

    He added that although governors would play influential roles at the concurrence stage, the immediate responsibility lay with South-East legislators to ensure the success of what he described as a landmark bill.
