    Kuole-Oloje Ruling House petitions Aiyedatiwa

A fresh crisis has erupted in Oke-Igbo Kingdom, following a petition by the Kuole-Oloje Ruling House to Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, seeking an executive review of the appointment of the Olu-Oke of Oke-Igbo.

The petition, referenced TTC/OOK/ODSG/25, was written by Tope Temokun Chambers, counsel for the Kuole-Oloje Ruling House, on behalf of Prince  Adewole Abegunde, who was described as the unanimous candidate and rightful successor to the Olu-Oke chieftaincy stool.

In the petition addressed to the governor, a copy obtained by The Nation yesterday, the ruling house challenged the appointment of Akintoye Adeoye of Are Kugbaigbe Ruling House as the Olu-Oke of Oke-Igbo Kingdom.

Governor Aiyedatiwa had, on November 4, 2025, presented the instrument of appointment and staff of office to Oba Adeoye at a ceremony held in Oke-Igbo, Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo Local Government.

The event took place amid protests by members of the Kuole-Oloje Ruling House, who rejected the nomination and described the government’s decision as “unacceptable.”

The petitioners contended that at the time the staff of office was presented, there existed a valid Chieftaincy Declaration governing succession to the Olu-Oke stool.

According to them, the declaration provides for rotational succession among five ruling houses: Odo-Eleyewo, Are Kugbaigbe, Kuole-Oloje, Aderin Ologbenla and Ajibike Adedimeji.

They noted that an appeal-Appeal No: CA/AK/97/2023, Chief Babajide Lawrence & 10 Ors v. Governor of Ondo State & 5 Ors-was pending before the Court of Appeal as at November 4, 2025, when the State Executive Council approved the appointment of Adeoye.

The appeal, they said, challenged the validity of the appointment of the immediate past Olu-Oke.

According to the petition, the Are Kugbaigbe Ruling House, having already produced a monarch in the current rotation, was ineligible to present another candidate until the next cycle.

The petitioners maintained that it was the turn of the Kuole-Oloje Ruling House, which had unanimously selected Prince Abegunde.

Describing the appointment as unlawful, the petitioners alleged that it had generated unrest within Oke-Igbo Kingdom and caused disquiet among traditional kingmakers.

They therefore urged Governor Aiyedatiwa to set aside the presentation of the staff of office to Adeoye and to direct strict compliance with the ladder system provided under the existing Chieftaincy Declaration and the Chiefs Law of Ondo State, in order to restore the stool to the Kuole-Oloje Ruling House.

The petition also served as a pre-action notice, warning that failure to receive a favourable response within one month would compel the petitioners to seek redress in court.

However, during the presentation of the staff of office, Governor Aiyedatiwa described the event as marking the end of a “long-drawn traditional and legal tussle” that left the Olu-Oke stool vacant for several years.

The governor recalled that the vacancy followed a court judgment which nullified the appointment of the late Oba Babajide Oluwole, declaring that he was not a descendant of the Are Kugbaigbe Ruling House and directing that the next monarch should emerge from that lineage.

According to him, the Chieftaincy Declaration registered in 2019 by the deposed monarch was nullified by the court, thereby restoring the native laws and customs of Oke-Igbo as the valid basis for the selection process.

Aiyedatiwa urged the new monarch to see his ascension as a call to service and an opportunity to promote peace and unity in the kingdom.

“Kabiyesi, you are now a father to all. Forget the acrimony of the past and do not use your position to victimise perceived opponents or rivals. I pray that Oke-Igbo will witness peace, growth and development during your reign,” the governor said.

He also appealed to other contenders and their supporters to accept the new monarch, stressing that “the interest of Oke-Igbo must be placed above personal interests.”

  • APC predicts landslide for Tinubu in Ondo

APC predicts landslide for Tinubu in Ondo

The Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, Ade Adetimehin, has predicted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will secure the most decisive and overwhelming electoral victory ever recorded in the history of the Fourth Republic when voters go to the polls in 2027.

Speaking yesterday at a colourful ceremony where some members of other parties defected to APC in Akure, Adetimehin described the current political reality in Ondo State as one of total APC dominance, with the opposition effectively “wiped out.’’

“The opposition in Ondo State is finished, completely dead and buried.

“Virtually everyone from other political parties has crossed over to join us in the APC. In 2027, President Tinubu will record the greatest landslide victory ever seen in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic and it will start right here in Ondo State.”

The high-profile event drew thousands of enthusiastic participants, as several powerful trade unions and artisan associations formally defected en masse to the ruling party.

The groups, which pledged loyalty to President Tinubu and the Renewed Hope Agenda, included Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycles (ACOMORAN), Tricycle Owners Association of Nigeria (TOAN), Nigeria Union of Tailors (NUT), Tricycles Owners Association of Nigeria (TOAN) and Barbers Association.

Comrade Akinlolu Olumorin, ACOMORAN state coordinator, said every member of the association, irrespective of previous political affiliation, had unanimously resolved to register with the APC and work for Tinubu’s re-election.

“We are not disappointed. Honestly, President Tinubu has performed far beyond our expectations,” he said.

“Many of us feared he might bow to political pressure and fail to deliver on his campaign promises.

‘’Instead, he has confronted the nation’s security challenges head-on and delivered remarkable infrastructure improvements that have even won the admiration of his fiercest critics.’’

Olumorin singled out Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, for special praise, describing him as “a wonderful and exemplary representative of Ondo State at the federal level,” whose efforts had been instrumental in bringing the associations into the APC fold.

“This is a cause we are totally committed to,” he said.

“Under the leadership of Dr. Tunji-Ojo, we will mobilise every member across the 18 local governments to register electronically with the party, attend ward meetings and ensure President Tinubu records a landslide victory in Ondo State in 2027.”

Other union leaders echoed similar commitments, vowing to deliver a decisive margin of victory for the President.

Otunba Agboola Kelly, the state coordinator of the APC Elders Movement for Tinubu 2027, who is the facilitator of the defections, lauded Tunji-Ojo, the source of empowerment for the groups supporting President Tinubu’s 2027 re-election in the state.

He urged the new members to complete their registration and participate in ward activities, to further consolidate the party’s grassroots structure.

Ex-Daar Communication boss Obaseki vows to pursue justice

Former Managing Director of Daar Communication, Dr. Pedro Obaseki, has said he would not support any illegal or unconventional means to seek justice against his abductors.

He said he would use legal means to pursue justice.

He said his lawyers were already putting a petition together.

Speaking yesterday in a phone interview, Obaseki said he would use legal means to get justice.

He said he knew the names and identities of his attackers.

Obaseki was on Sunday abducted from Uwa Primary School football field and paraded through the streets of Benin City for being an ‘Oghionba’ (enemy of the Oba).

He was beaten up, stripped naked and later taken to Oba Market Police Station.

Obaseki was released after about five hours in detention.

In a statement he issued after he was released, he said: “The attackers, some of whom were armed and brandishing guns, forcibly kidnapped me. The individuals who led this attack identified themselves as Kapuepue Adun, Osayande Obakhavbaye, Osamede Nomoless Eriyo and Osamiefan (also known as ‘Sales Guy’).

“I was severely beaten up, dragged along the streets and stripped naked. I was dragged along Igbesanmwan Road, taken to the front of Holy Aruosa Church and publicly paraded in my nakedness. From there, I was further dragged around Ring Road and forcibly taken to the Oba’s Palace. The public beating, stripping and humiliation occurred over a distance of approximately five kilometres.”

A former Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Roland Owie, has called on Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to prosecute the suspects.

He described the incident as barbaric, unconscionable and incompatible with a civilised society governed by law.

Owie, in a statement he signed, said what happened to Obaseki was not merely an assault on one individual, but also an assault on the rule of law.

“It is symptomatic of a deeply troubling descent into lawlessness and impunity, and a warning sign of a dangerous slide towards Hobbesian anarchy, if left unchecked.’’

“Silence in the face of such evil,” he warned, was complicity.

“The dignity of Edo people and the integrity of our constitutional order demand collective condemnation and resolute action.”

The All Progressives Congress in Edo State, which condemned the attack, said

Governor Monday Okpebholo made it clear that the state would not be governed by mobs, street justice or political hooliganism.

Acting spokesman for the party, Ofure Osehobo, in a statement, said PDP’s discomfort stemmed from the fact that their old playground of disorder was being dismantled.

“Instead of supporting lawful investigation into the Pedro Obaseki incident, PDP chose to inflame emotions, insult Edo people’s intelligence and disrespect institutions, including traditional ones, in its reckless pursuit of headlines. This alone shows a party that has lost all sense of responsibility.

“APC condemns violence in all forms. The Pedro Obaseki incident is under investigation, without interference.

“Governor Okpebholo’s administration will not shield anyone found culpable. Edo State will not return to the PDP’s dark days of tolerated lawlessness.

“PDP should stop behaving like political vultures hovering over every incident in search of relevance. Edo people rejected them because of their record of chaos, arrogance and insecurity. Their current conduct only reinforces why they remain unfit to govern.”

Ekiti 2026: PDP candidate missing on INEC list

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the provisional list of governorship and deputy governorship candidates for the June 20, 2026 Ekiti State governorship election.

The list, which was pasted yesterday at the INEC office on New Iyin Road, Ado-Ekiti, contains candidates from 12 political parties vying for the plum positions.

According to the list, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is fielding the incumbent governor, Biodun Oyebanji (58), with Monisade Afuye (67) as his running mate.

Other candidates include Opeyemi Falegan (41) of the Accord Party, with Omoyemi Olaleye (42) as deputy; Akande Oluwasegun (36) of the African Action Congress paired with Oluwasanmi Fajuyigbe; and Ayodeji Ojo (42) of the Action Democratic Party, with Itunu Ibitoye (35) as running mate.

The African Democratic Congress is presenting Oluwadare Bejide (66) and Paul Olowoyeye (52), while the Action People’s Party has Bidemi Awogbemi (36) and Akinyemi Adewumi (53) on its ticket.

Also on the list are Joseph Anifowose (65) and Margaret Ilesanmi (68) of the Allied People’s Movement; Oyebanji Olajuyin (67) and Ayokunle Okumade (45) of the Labour Party; and Blessing Abegunde (35) with Francis Ajayi (65) of the New Nigeria People’s Party.

The People’s Redemption Party is fielding Olaniyi Ayodele (49) and Modupe Adebiyi (35), while the Young Progressive Party has Owoola Daramola (54) and Opeyemi Adeyemo (51). Zenith Labour Party’s candidates are Victor Adetunji (38) and Adesina Oyeniyi (35).

However, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr. Wole Oluyede and his deputy were not on the provisional list.

A source at the INEC office told our correspondent that the PDP’s candidates were not included due to ongoing court cases bordering on the party’s leadership, which are yet to be resolved.

The electoral body is expected to make further updates to the list on January 19, in line with Electoral Act 2022, as parties conclude substitutions and legal issues ahead of the election.

  • Gumi and his bandit ‘neighbours’

    Gumi and his bandit ‘neighbours’

Any attack on terrorists who have troubled Nigeria for so long is attack on family. That is the new gospel according to Islamic cleric, Sheik Ahmad Gumi. He urged Nigerians to learn to live with armed herders, typically associated with terrorism and banditry, because they are “neighbours” and should not be treated as enemies.

The controversial cleric made his apologia in a video post against the backdrop  of recent United States airstrikes on terrorist hideouts in Nigeria, which the Nigerian government said it authorised and actively collaborated with. He said the people being attacked were part of the country and were not going anywhere. His words: “They are going nowhere. They are a part of us, and we are part of them. We must learn to live together and should never become enemies with them.”

Gumi said treating terrorists as enemies was detrimental to national security because “real enemies” could then use them against the nation. The cleric has often canvassed dialogue with, and amnesty for bandits, arguing they are driven by a sense of marginalisation and are more a “resistance movement” than violent criminals His latest intervention falls in line with that rhetoric of framing the activities of terrorists as a survival struggle and not a crime deserving of crackdown.

A day before the video post, Gumi called on the Nigerian government to stop all military cooperation with the US following America’s airstrikes on suspected terrorist hideouts in Northwest Nigeria. In a post on his Facebook page, he warned that any foreign military intervention, particularly by the United States, would exacerbate insecurity rather than remedy it. The cleric asked the government to instead seek military assistance from countries he termed more “neutral” like China, Turkey and Pakistan. “Nigeria should halt all military cooperation with the USA immediately because of its imperial tendencies worldwide and seek the help of those neutral countries mentioned.” He played what could be construed as a subtle blackmail card, saying: “Nigerians are too educated to be played with. This is going to be a 2027 campaign discourse.”

While acknowledging that fighting terrorism is legitimate, Gumi believes that such efforts must not be outsourced to foreign powers that have ulterior motives. “The US involvement in Nigeria will attract the real anti-US forces, making our land a theatre of war. As a principle, no nation should allow its land to be a theatre of war, and no nation should allow its neighbours to be their enemies,” he argued.

Gumi is always butting into national conversation to advocate for terrorists whenever they are being dealt a heavy hand. He should spare Nigerians the irritation of his advocacy and join the terrorists to be treated as one of them if he’s sufficiently passionate. Enough of this terrorism apology!

  • Makinde and PDP warriors of democracy

Makinde and PDP warriors of democracy

A latent war of attrition among PDP factional leader started with the pulling out of the late Bola Ige/Olu Falae group on the eve of the party’s registration in 1988. It did not become covert until the party’s takeover by retired Generals and their contractor fronts. Victory in the 1999 election and greed over sharing of spoils of victory only brought in more acrimony. Resentment among factional leaders at this point was tagged “family quarrel” because there was more than enough to go round. But by 2015, PDP had fought itself out of power. For a group driven by greed, that there might be nothing to share until probably after 2031 is the source of today’s bitterness and factional leaders’ resolve to fight to the bitter end.

Much as PDP anti-democratic fortune-seekers might wish to change the narrative, I am not sure Nigerians are deceived by the claim that the current renewed war of attrition is a patriotic attempt to protect democracy, or prevent President Tinubu from turning the country to a one-party state.

Is it not an irony that those who in 1993 buried democracy, promoted an unconstitutional Interim National Government, became beneficiary of sacrifices of NADECO, Civil Society Groups, journalists and other unsung Nigerians killed by Abacha soldiers, and then danced on the grave of MKO Abiola for 16 years without acknowledging his supreme sacrifice, now say they are soldiers of democracy?

It cannot get any more sardonic than the claim that President Tinubu, the arrow head of opposition to  dictatorship and the only man left standing during Obasanjo  2003 “mainstreaming” crusade that led to PDP’s ‘land slide and sea slide victory in opposition strongholds’ (apology to Walter Ofonagoro) is today considered a threat to democracy?

There is no doubt Nigerians are worried about survival of democracy. How about the ongoing deliberate attempt by anti-democratic elements like Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi and others now in ADC, (Obasnajo’s special vehicle for disgruntled politicians) with history of moving from party to party at every election season in search of platform to mislead our youths below 30 years of age? This concern is perhaps what informed Nigerians who know that democracy thrives better under a multi-party system, to counsel PDP factional leaders on the virtue of negotiation which is an invaluable democratic ethos, instead of acquiring new war arsenals.

Concerned Nigerians had also expected the warring factions to have been sobered by INEC’s declaration of the controversial Ibadan Convention null and void, and the forced dislodgement of warring factional leaders and their thugs by the police from their Abuja Wadata Plaza headquarters which for a period became a battle field. However, with last Wednesday’s Wike-backed NWC announced dissolution of the party’s state executives in some states and the inauguration  of a 19-member state caretaker committee, it is not difficult to conclude that neither survival of PDP nor democracy matter to Wike’s group or his opponents who are also digging in.

For instance, instead of Seyi Makinde, the newly appointed war leader seeking way to put his house in order after the Ibadan fiasco, he is trying to find a scape goat in President Tinubu. And without the courage to confront PDP demon, Kabiru Turaki, the Ibadan elected faction leader is seeking outside help to truncate two and half years old Tinubu’s administration. Nigerians can still hear the roaring ring of his desperate plea “I want to call on President Trump, what is at stake is not just genocide against Nigerian Christians, he should come and save democracy in Nigeria”. Turaki can be excused because a drowning man will hold to any straw.

But he has probably not heard about a Yoruba axiom that admonishes us to first study the apparel a man that promises us a new dress adorns. In his desperation, Turaki forgets that Trump was the first American President in 200 years to be impeached twice for sponsoring an attack on the Congress, the symbol of American democracy in a failed attempt to overturn an election he lost and a leader that has assaulted all democratic institutions since his re-election.

But much as we all want PDP to survive because democracy thrives better under multi-party system, the challenge is whether a party that has always been haunted by crisis of internal democracy can offer what it has not got. It is on record that Obasanjo was imposed by retired generals and northern ruling class as Yoruba candidate and eventually president in 1999. And as a leader who was roundly rejected by his Yoruba people even in his own polling booth, by becoming a president without a base, it can be said he literarily climbed the palm tree from the top.

And in power, Obasanjo who has always been a victim of messianic complex, publicly declared he was not obliged to listen  to appointed advisers insisting he would rather listen “to the voice of God’. But deeply religious Nigerians agreed that it was the voice of someone else other than God that drove Obasanjo and Maurice Iwu to conduct the most scandalous elections in Nigeria in 2003 and 2007. In the 2003, the judiciary had to retrieve stolen mandates of governors of Edo, Ondo, Ekiti and Osun from Obasanjo. In  2007, Umaru Yar’Adua the declared winner, was so scandalised by the extent of rigging that he set up the Justice Uwai’s commission to prevent a repeat of what happened under Obasanjo.

Besides Obasanjo, all PDP political actors are tarred with the same brush of anti-democrats. There were the 16 PDP governors who resorted to self-help after losing the Governors’ Forum election to Rotimi Amaechi; there was PDP gang of seven including Atiku Abubakar, Alhaji Baraje, Bukola Saraki and some governors that traded PDP for APC in 2015. In 2023,  Atiku Abubarkar, Kwankwaso, and  Peter Obi, out of greed, splintered PDP into three on the eve of an election, while Wike like his fellow sore losers, led his ‘integrity group ‘of five governors to Tinubu’s camp to spite Atiku.

But beyond actors, PDP itself is never a political party. The distinguishing characteristic of any political party is a consensus of members on identified values and principles.  PDP and its factional leaders hardly agree on anything. PDP’s illegal sharing of our nation’s resources is often accompanied with acrimony. It was through their endless war of attrition that we knew about the mismanagement of the privatization programme under Atiku and El Rufai. Bukola Saraki was the whistle-blower in the fuel subsidy scam. Yar Adua and other PDP members told us Obasanjo spent between $10 and $13b on the energy sector that only brought darkness. It was from Chukwuma Soludo and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala the nation got to know the level of debauchery by PDP leaders under Jonathan presidency. The above facts confirmed the claim by many including former US envoy to Nigeria, that PDP is not a political party but an elite group that came together for the sharing of power and proceeds of oil.

But if Nigerians want to know the true colour of PDP and its ignoble leaders, all they need to do is sieve what Seyi Makinde, the new war commander of “PDP warriors of democracy” claimed to have discussed with the president from other aspects he did not disclose.

But first two quick anecdotes: Wike once told us long before the mass defection of PDP members to APC started that some governors who criticise President Tinubu openly often pay nocturnal visits to seek private favours. Makinde said he went to see the president in respect of expansion of Ibadan Airport. As a member of Council of State, he did not need Wike to see the president if expansion of Ibadan airport was the only agenda.

Makinde, like his fellow politicians is probably a man of many words because we can draw more conclusions from what he did not say than what he said. For instance, he started his narrative not from airport expansion but from where he told the president that Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, the man the president picked in place of his recommended ministerial nominee, did not have the capacity to mobilise APC party in Ibadan with the president challenging him by saying “ I want you to do the mobilization for me”.

For Makinde who supported the president in 2023 but currently not facing the challenges of re-election like his fellow PDP defectors, the president’s response was proof he coerced his colleagues to join APC and his rejection of the president’s request establishes his democratic credential and consolidates his position as commander of PDP warriors of democracy’!

I have been wondering if Makinde is confessing he and his defected colleagues can be so cheaply bought; how he expects Tinubu whose resourcefulness, political, brinkmanship and capacity for skilful exploitation of human infirmities has been acknowledged even by political foes,  not to take advantage of politicians who behave like prostitutes  with five husbands (apology to TOS Benson).

Subsidy removal boosts states’ revenue, says Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said the removal of fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu has significantly increased the funds available to state governments.

Wike made the remark on Monday during his end-of-the-year live broadcast, monitored in Port Harcourt. He described the subsidy removal as a bold and courageous decision, noting that it has enabled several states to prepare annual budgets exceeding N1 trillion.

According to him, the increased flow of funds has also attracted the attention of “smart Nigerians” who are seeking ways to access their share of the “national cake” through various means.

Wike noted that with more resources now available to state governments, the quality of life of citizens should improve, urging residents to demand accountability from their governors.

He added that during his eight years as governor of Rivers State, he never had access to the level of funds currently available to state governments, stressing that his administration never received more than N200 billion in any single year.

“In all my life, as governor for eight years in Rivers, I never received from the Federation Account more than N200 billion in a year. The records are there.

“States are now making a budget of over a trillion because the removal of fuel subsidy has now made money available to the states and so most of them are blindfolded,” he said.

The minister said that he would do wonders if he had N500 billion in FCT account, stressing that FCT gets only one per cent of the share of the Federal Government (FG) from the federation account.

“Take for example, if FG gets N1 trillion, 1 percent is N10 million and that is not enough to pay salary. I will have to go back to Internally Generated Revenue, but look at what is happening in Abuja?

“With the little we have got, we have been able to do the best that we can for the residents of FCT,” he said.

He, however, cautioned that money has its own limitations, adding that there were areas where money could go but goodwill would take someone there.

He expressed confidence that the candidates of the All Progressive Congress (APC) would win the FCT Area Councils’ election, scheduled for February due to Tinubu’s goodwill.

He added that no President had done what Tinubu did in the FCT Area Councils, which he said will give the APC candidates an upper hand.

The minister equally added that beyond infrastructure, the FCT Administration had intervened in education, health, and the agricultural sectors.

“This, in the long run, will improve the standard of living of the people,” he said.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has spoken via telephone with Nigerian-British boxing star, Anthony Joshua, following a tragic road accident in Ogun State that left the former heavyweight champion injured and claimed the lives of two of his associates.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Monday, President Tinubu personally conveyed his condolences to Joshua during the call, offering prayers for his recovery and the repose of the departed.

The President said the boxer assured him that he was receiving the best possible medical care.

“I spoke with AJ on the phone to personally convey my condolences over the death of his two associates. I wished him well and prayed for him. He assured me that he is receiving the best care in the hospital,” the President said.

President Tinubu also spoke with Joshua’s mother, offering prayers and words of comfort.

“I also spoke with AJ’s mother and prayed for her. She was very appreciative of my call,” he added.

The President further disclosed that he spoke with Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, who was at the hospital with the boxer.

Governor Abiodun, according to the President, assured that everything possible would be done to ensure Joshua receives optimal medical attention.

“Additionally, I spoke to Governor Dapo Abiodun, who was in the hospital with them. The Governor assured me that he will do everything possible to ensure AJ receives the best possible attention,” Tinubu said.

Earlier, President Tinubu, who is currently abroad, had expressed profound sympathy for the boxer in a message posted on his verified X handle following the accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

“I sympathise with you and your family as you bear the emotional weight of this unfortunate incident. As a sportsman, you have always shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country. These are qualities that have made you a source of national pride,” the President wrote.

He urged Nigerians to stand together in moments of grief, stressing the need for collective support and empathy. “In moments like this, we must encourage one another as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny,” Tinubu added.

The President prayed for Joshua’s speedy recovery and asked God to grant eternal rest to the souls of those who lost their lives in the accident.

JUST IN: NULGE directs members to resume work January 5 after 11-month strike

After an 11-month strike, the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has directed its members to resume duties across local government councils from January 5, 2026.

The Nation reports that NULGE embarked on the strike on February 18, 2025, following violent clashes triggered by a leadership tussle between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over control of local government councils in Osun State, which resulted in killings and injuries.

Subsequently, APC-backed executives were reinstated and took over the councils, while the Federal Government released withheld allocations into local government accounts opened by them through the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Although several legal disputes between the two parties have been resolved, a suit on tenure elongation filed by APC members remains pending.

In the meantime, PDP council chairmen presented their 2026 budgets to the Osun State House of Assembly, while APC chairmen presented theirs before legislative councils at the local government level.

In a statement signed by the President of NULGE, Kehinde Ogungbangbe, the union directed members to return to work on January 5, 2026, and called for adequate security to be deployed to all councils to ensure the safety of workers.

“As you are aware, our members were directed to withdraw their services due to the volatile security situation arising from the leadership tussle and political rivalry between the PDP and APC over control of local government secretariats in Osun State,” the statement read.

“To safeguard the lives of our members, we had no option but to vacate the premises. However, after extensive internal deliberations, the union has resolved that members should resume work on Monday, January 5, 2026. We hereby request the deployment of sufficient security personnel to all 30 local government councils, area offices and LCDAs to prevent violence and ensure a safe working environment.”

NULGE also insisted that the APC-reinstated chairmen should acknowledge the expiration of their tenure, noting that they were elected on October 15, 2022, and that their tenure legally ended on October 30, 2025.

“On running of local government, the 30 Local Government councils, Area offices and LCDAs Secretariats can be effectively run, without any Chairmen/Councilors by the Head of Local Administration (HLA), with the Director of Administration & General Services and Director of Finance, serving as the duly recognized signatories to the local government accounts under the Osun State Local Government Accounts Administration Law 2025.

“Our Prayers: In view of our scheduled resumption on 5th January, 2026, we respectfully request the Security Agencies to: Deploy adequate security to the 30 Local Government councils, Area offices and LCDAs Secretariats to prevent intimidation, harassment, or disruption of lawful duties,

“Prevent any further illegal occupation of these secretariats by unauthorized persons to ensure public peace; Ensure that the Security Agencies maintains its neutrality and upholds the rule of law by protecting public servants from self-help tactics.”

He warned that “should there be any breakdown of law and order due to a failure to provide security, this correspondence shall be relied upon as evidence that the Union duly alerted the security agencies to the impending danger.”

Calabar, the Cross River State capital, came alive on Saturday as top local and international dignitaries converged for the 20th edition of the Calabar International Carnival, popularly known as “Africa’s Biggest Street Party.”

Among those in attendance were the Portuguese Ambassador, Paulo Santos; Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma; National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, and his wife; as well as representatives of ECOWAS. Others included the Minister of State for Industry, Senator John Owan Enoh and his wife, retired military officers, Nollywood actors and several political and business leaders.

While flagging off the event at the historic Millennium Park in Calabar, Governor Bassey Otu charged the participating bands to creatively interpret the theme of the 2025 carnival, “Traces of Time,” in a way that would leave lasting impressions on the global audience.

“The carnival you see today is going to unveil some very explosive outcomes. We want all the bands to understand this year’s theme and interpret it practically and excellently so that the world will continue to remember Cross River State,” Otu said.

The governor described the Calabar Carnival as a major pillar of the state’s tourism calendar, noting that it represents two decades of ingenuity, resilience, continuity and sustainability. He urged both competing and non-competing bands to refine their performances and give their best, hinting that outstanding displays could earn recognition and elevation.

Otu also used the occasion to acknowledge the contributions of his predecessors, including former Governors Donald Duke, for initiating the carnival; Liyel Imoke, for sustaining it; and Ben Ayade, for ensuring its continuity even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earlier, Chairman of the Cross River Carnival Commission, Gabe Onah, said the carnival has significantly boosted the state’s commercial and tourism economy. He announced the presence of delegates from French- and English-speaking ECOWAS countries, the Spanish Consul, the Portuguese Ambassador, as well as other local and international partners.

In his remarks, Portuguese Ambassador Paulo Santos praised the Cross River State Government for the success and consistency of the carnival over the past two decades. He expressed admiration for the organisation of the event and said he would encourage other diplomats based in Abuja and nearby areas to spend their end-of-year holidays in Calabar.

Following the flag-off, revellers took to the 12-kilometre carnival routes, dancing and making stops at designated adjudication points to showcase performances in line with the competition guidelines and the year’s theme.
