What Eko Fiesta 2025 offers youths, SMEs, by organisers

Stakeholders in Nigeria’s creative, entertainment and cultural industries have said well-curated platforms such as the 2025 Eko Fiesta offer huge opportunities for young people and small businesses to grow, network and access wider markets.

They spoke at a press briefing to announce the much-publicised fiesta, held at the Federal Palace Hotel & Casino, Victoria Island, Lagos, which drew a large crowd of creatives, entrepreneurs, sponsors and media executives.

The three-day event, scheduled to run from December 22 to December 24, is designed as a free, open platform to promote local businesses, showcase Nigerian culture and position Lagos as a leading hub for tourism, arts, culture and entertainment in Africa.

Speaking at the briefing, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr. Idris Aregbe, reiterated the Lagos State Government’s commitment to youth empowerment through the creative economy.

Aregbe said the state would continue to support initiatives that provide practical opportunities for young people, noting that platforms like Eko Fiesta align with the government’s drive to use tourism and culture as engines of economic growth.

He assured participants that the state’s involvement would not be limited to this year’s edition, promising sustained participation in future editions of the fiesta.

On her part, Mrs. Ayodele Olojede, Divisional Head, Retail and SMEs at Wema Bank Plc, said the bank’s decision to sponsor the event was rooted in its long-standing belief in youth empowerment and small business growth.

She said Wema Bank would be actively present throughout the three-day fiesta, engaging customers, onboarding new ones and providing guidance on financial services, especially for small and medium-scale enterprises navigating complex business and funding challenges.

Adding a creative voice to the conversation, young fashion entrepreneur Miss Tosky Opeifa expressed excitement about being part of the fiesta, describing it as a platform to showcase innovation in Nigerian fashion.

She said she planned to blend European influences with local fabrics to highlight the richness and versatility of Nigerian materials, while appealing to both local and international audiences.

Explaining the vision behind the initiative, Mr. Damilare Osho and Dr. Wale Oyebanji of Dosh & Wales Company, organisers of the Eko Fiesta, said the event was conceived to go beyond entertainment and address a clear gap in Lagos’ crowded December festivities.

In his address, Osho described Eko Fiesta as “an idea and a vision” aimed at creating a vibrant and inclusive space where celebration meets commerce, reflecting the spirit of Lagos while supporting local talent and enterprise.

According to him, the fiesta was born out of challenges faced by Nigerians in the diaspora and visitors who return home during “Detty December” but struggle to find a one-stop space that combines authentic cultural experiences, shopping, entertainment and meaningful networking.

He explained that the event would bring local small-scale entrepreneurs into direct contact with consumers from diverse backgrounds, boosting trade, visibility and patronage for indigenous brands.

Osho said beyond entertainment, the core objectives of the fiesta include enhancing the visibility of local businesses, showcasing the creativity of young Lagosians to a global audience, facilitating networking and mentorship for young professionals and creatives, and providing a relaxed civic platform where regulatory and development institutions can engage youths and the diaspora.

He added that the initiative would also promote cultural integration, social cohesion and help attract foreign direct investment into the country.

“While Lagos in December is filled with concerts and parties, there has been a gap for something that blends celebration with purpose. Eko Fiesta is designed to bridge that gap by creating a space where people can enjoy music, art and culture, while discovering local brands, artisans and entrepreneurs,” he said.

Sponsors and partners for the 2025 Eko Fiesta include the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Wema Bank Plc, Dosh & Wales Group, Ile Ade Fashion, Codix Pharma Group, Nigerian Breweries Plc (Legend Stout), Brilla FM, Sweet Sensation, Bukka Hut, Emergency Response Africa and the MyLagos App.

Organisers said the event would run daily from noon till evening throughout the three days, offering a blend of entertainment, exhibitions, cultural showcases and business engagement aimed at strengthening Lagos’ creative and cultural economy.

    Ex-governorship candidate Akingboye’s son faults aide’s claims

ZION Akinbamidele Akingboye, son of the late governorship candidate and businessman, Otunba Bamidele Akingboye (OBA), has issued a rebuttal to claims by his father’s former aide, Mr. Oyeniyi Iwakun.

Zion faulted Iwakun’s recent public denial of OBA’s medical history.

Reacting to Iwakun’s assertion that OBA never suffered from mental illness, Zion said in a statement that the claim exposed “a shocking ignorance” by someone who purported to be close to the deceased.

“For the avoidance of doubt, my father was medically diagnosed as far back as 2019 with Bipolar Affective Disorder with psychotic symptoms by qualified psychiatrists in Nigeria,” he stated.

Zion said medical records exist and are available to confirm the diagnosis, stressing that Nigerian health facilities, including Southern Gem Hospital, can independently attest to his father’s condition and treatment history.

According to Zion, throughout his father’s political activities and election campaigns, the family took deliberate steps to ensure proper management of his mental health, including medical supervision, treatment, rest and controlled public engagements.

Zion stressed that acknowledging OBA’s medical condition does not diminish his achievements or legacy, but warned that any misinformation would not go unchallenged.

“The truth will not be buried,” Zion declared.

Ministry lifts widows, less-priviledged in Kwara

An Ilorin, Kwara State-based Christian organisation, Message of Salvation Women Ministry (MSWM), has brought smiles to the faces of no fewer than 1,000 widows and less privileged women in celebration of the 2025 Christmas and New Year festivities.

The ministry, also known as ‘Obinrin Oniwarere’, distributed cash gifts, clothing materials, and food items to the beneficiaries across Kwara State.

Over the past 20 years, the women’s ministry has spent approximately N63 million on Christmas gifts for the widows and other less privileged women in the state.

The founder of the ministry, Rev. Florence Ajagbe, revealed that this year’s event cost about N6 million.

Drawing inspiration from the Bible story of Naomi and Ruth, she encouraged the beneficiaries to endure the challenges they face, remain strong, and take care of the children left behind by their deceased husbands.

“Don’t be in a hurry to remarry, but if you cannot endure, go ahead and remarry. However, I advise you to focus your attention on your children,” she said.

Regarding the challenges facing the ministry, Rev. Ajagbe expressed concerns about the lack of proper office accommodation.

“We receive support from churches and family members. One of the current challenges is office accommodation. We are appealing to the Federal and Kwara State governments to assist us so that this ministry can grow. We need government support,” she said.

The ministry’s Secretary, Mary Oladele, praised the organisation and orderliness of this year’s event.

“We are grateful for all those who contributed to the success of this year’s programme.”

On the accommodation issue, Mrs. Oladele echoed the founder’s concerns: “We have not had a permanent place to meet for many years. We are seeking support from anyone whom God has touched to help us. We would love to have a piece of land or a building we can call our own, so we will not be tossed around anymore.”

  • Family warns buyers as legal battle rages over Akodo land

Family warns buyers as legal battle rages over Akodo land

A long-running and complex legal battle over the true ownership of a vast expanse of land in Akodo, within the Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State, has triggered a strong warning to prospective buyers.

The warning was issued in a statement jointly signed by the Alakodo of Ibeju Land, Oba Abdul-Hakeem Olokodano; Prince Kehinde Jamiu Hassan; Prince Nojibu Idowu Hassan and Prince Balogun Olalekan.

Oba Olumoye Oniwonlu Abejoye Royal Family, who describe themselves as the original owners of the land, cautioned members of the public against purchasing any portion of Akodo land, noting that the title remains the subject of multiple ongoing court cases.

The family stressed that the ownership of Akodo land remains subject to the final determination of all pending cases.

“Any buyer who ignores this warning risks purchasing nothing and may ultimately be evicted by the rightful owners,” the family stated.

The Oba Olumoye family insisted that a Court of Appeal judgment or consent judgment was not conclusive proof of ownership, adding that there were pending legal challenges.

A representative of the family said: “The entire peace arrangement between the Ogbeni family and the Akodo Community has collapsed.”

The dispute, according to the family, has degenerated into physical confrontations.

The ownership dispute involves no fewer than 16 prominent families – Oba Olumoye Oniwonlu Abejoye, Kejibo Elejide, Ogunlaja,  Ogbeni, Abdullahi Baba Egbe, Oluwo, Ilelaboye, Ogedengbe, Ajibike, Ogbe. Ogele, Iya Agba/Baba Dudu, Ota, Oguntolu, Oloro, Eruobodo and Ijabejo, as well as several real estate companies, all laying claim to different portions of the Akodo territory.

The legal entanglement dates back several decades and is rooted in judgments delivered by the Supreme Court in the 1920s, specifically in 1925 and 1928. These historic rulings covered parts of Akodo land, including Tiye, Idasho and Eemu/Erumu areas.

The depth of the crisis could be seen in the number of unresolved lawsuits currently before the Lagos State High Courts.

One of such cases is Suit No. EPD/8283/LMW/2019 was instituted by descendants of Oba Olumoye Oniwonlu against 16 families and some real estate companies. The suit challenged the ownership claims of other families, including the Ogbeni family.

Although the Court of Appeal judgment in Suit No. CA/L/1082/2014 appeared to favour the Ogbeni family and others against some person called Akodo community, the decision was later compromised and resolved through a consent judgment in Suit No. LD/2861GCM/2018.

The consent judgment reportedly declared the Akodo land communal property and apportioned ownership between the Ogbeni family (55 per cent) and the Akodo Community (45 per cent).

However, the Oba Olumoye Oniwonlu Abejoye Family maintained that the consent judgment does not bind them, as they were not parties to the agreement.

The Oba Olumoye Oniwonlu Abejoye family had also joined ongoing suits marked LD/6040/2014, EPD/7972LMW/2019 and EPD/9892LMW/2020 initiated by the Oluwo family, Eruobodo family and  Idris and Jegede Chieftaincy (Abdullahi Baba Egbe) family and others, to assert a counterclaim to the ownership of the entire Akodo land.

In another related case, Suit No. EPD/2171LMW/2016, instituted by the Kejibo-Elejide family against the Amure family and others, the Oba Olumoye Oniwonlu Abejoye Royal family has equally entered the proceedings to counterclaim ownership of a parcel of land known as Igi Aba Village Excision, Akodo.

On the implications for investors, Kunle Alabi, a legal analyst familiar with land disputes in Lagos, warned of the grave risks involved.

“Once a land title is sub-judice, that is, under judicial consideration, any transaction carried out on such land is vulnerable to being nullified by a subsequent court decision,” he explained.

Edo demolishes kidnappers’ hideout in Etsako East

Edo State government has demolished structures and shanties suspected to be the kidnappers’ hideout in Obu/Oguda/Bua Cement axis of the Okpella-Okene highway.

The demolished structures, according to the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, were discovered through investigations.

Ebojele said the investigations showed they were used as bases by kidnappers for holding abducted victims before ransoms were demanded and collected.

According to Ebojele, “The axis has long been dreaded by residents and motorists, having gained notoriety as a haven for hardened criminals who instilled fear in the area. Several past attempts to flush them out reportedly proved abortive, making the location a major security concern for the Okpebholo-led administration.

“However, on December 20, 2025, about 9:30 a.m., the area fell to the superior strategic planning and resolve of the Edo State Government as the illegal structures were pulled down, restoring a sense of safety to the community.

The demolition was carried out by the Edo State Development and Building Control Agency, led by Town Planning Officer, Williams Ovenseri.

During the operation, the suspects reportedly resisted efforts by blocking the Okpella–Okene Expressway in the Obu/Oguda/Bua cement axis, allegedly using human shields. Despite the resistance, security forces maintained control and ensured the success of the operation.

The CPS added: “With the demolition completed, the area, once a hotspot for kidnappings and attacks on motorists, has become relatively calm, while security agencies continue to maintain surveillance to prevent any resurgence of criminal activities.

“The successful operation marks a significant breakthrough for the Okpebholo administration, underscoring its firm commitment to winning the war against crime and ensuring the safety of lives and property across Edo State.”

•NDLEA intercepts Italy-bound opioids, nabs businessman, Beninoise lady, others in nationwide raids

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested another leader of a drug syndicate, Shodunke Yetunde Simbiat, 38, who went underground since May, last year, in her Lagos home where additional 23.50 kilograms of cocaine worth N5 billion was recovered from her children’s room.

Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA Headquarters, Abuja, Femi Babafemi, who broke the news in a statement yesterday, said this is coming 20 months after a cocaine trafficking cartel led by a couple – Bolanle Lookman Dauda and Olayinka Toheebat Dauda – was smashed in Lagos and Ogun states by operatives of the NDLEA with multi-billion-naira worth of the illicit drug recovered from them

Babafemi said the kingpin Lookman and his queen Toheebat were arrested on May 24, last year by members of the agency’s special operations unit at Ibiye, on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway while attempting to cross the border to deliver the consignment in Ghana.

He said 42 blocks of cocaine weighing 47.5 kilograms were found on them.

Babafemi said a follow up in their residence at Plot 24/25 OPIC extension, Petedo Road, Agbara, Ogun State, led to the recovery of additional eight blocks of the same drug weighing 10kg, bringing the drugs seized from the couple to 57.5 kilograms.

Babafemi said the NDLEA operatives trailed Simbiat to her 31 Onasanya Street, Surulere, Lagos residence on December 9, this year.

The statement reads: “A thorough search of her home led to the discovery of blocks of cocaine weighing 23.50 kilograms concealed in a black suit case recovered from her children’s room. She admitted ownership of the drug consignment worth over N5 billion in street value.”

Babafemi said he claimed the trafficking of the opioids to Italy would have fetched him 200 euros from the person he was to deliver them to.

The statement reads: “At the Seme border in Badagry, Lagos, a 48-year-old Beninoise Leocardi Josu was on Thursday, December 18 arrested by NDLEA officers while attempting to cross into Nigeria with 3,400 tablets of tramadol 225mg, even as a suspect Abdullahi Adamu, 30, was nabbed along Okene/Lokoja highway with 28.400kg skunk, a strain of cannabis and Colorado, a synthetic cannabis on Friday, December 19.’’

Woman fakes own kidnap, collects N2.5m from husband

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a housewife, Mrs. Misturah Bada, and six others in two separate cases of fake and stage-managed kidnappings aimed at extorting money from family members.

Mrs Bada, 26, was arrested by operatives of the command’s Special Squad alongside her alleged accomplice, Adedamola Daniel, 30.

Police said the woman allegedly extorted N2.5million from her husband, a Nigerian based in South Africa.

The husband, according to the police, raised the alarm on November 24, after receiving information that his wife had been kidnapped and a ransom of N10 million demanded.

The amount was later reduced to N3 million but he eventually paid N2.5 million. However, the alleged kidnappers failed to release her prompting the husband to file a complaint with the police.

Following investigations, Mrs. Bada was located, reunited with her family and invited for debriefing. She claimed she was kidnapped by six armed men who dispossessed her of her iPhone 12 Pro Max. However, inconsistencies in her account led to further investigation.

On December 3, operatives arrested Daniel in Ede, Osun State. A SIM card linked to the WhatsApp account used for ransom negotiations was recovered from him.

“He confessed that Mrs. Bada requested his SIM card to open the account and provided the OTP used to operate it.

Confronted with the evidence, Mrs. Bada admitted to staging the kidnapping to extort money from her husband.

Her phone, earlier claimed to be with the kidnappers, was recovered from one Yusuf Sodiq, 34, who said he bought it from her for N380,000,” the police said.

Relatedly, detectives of the Anti-Kidnapping Tactical Squad arrested five suspects over a viral video showing a schoolboy allegedly kidnapped. Police said the incident, initially reported as a missing person case on November 26, was staged by the boy, Victor Aligwo, 15, with four friends.

Investigations revealed that the suspects used a room belonging to one of them to record a distress video of Aligwo pleading for help, with the aim of extorting money from his mother, who had recently received N4 million. A ransom of N1.7 million was paid and shared among the suspects before police traced the transaction through a POS terminal and arrested them.

The suspects were identified as Kosiko Patrick, 17; Victor Aligwo, 15; David Odudu, 19; Anyabike Kingsley, 20; and Umeh Victor, 19.

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Olohundare Jimoh, warned against false reporting, criminal deception and acts that divert security resources. He assured residents that the command was committed to protecting lives and property, urging the public to report suspicious activities through the police emergency lines.

All suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations, the police assured.
