New initiative targets emotional growth, mental wellbeing of children in Nigeria

A new chapter in child development advocacy began in Abuja on Thursday, with the official launch of the ‘My Child’s Psyche Initiative (MCPI),’ a foundation committed to transforming the emotional and psychological wellbeing of Nigerian children.

The Initiative aims to promote emotional intelligence, psychological resilience, and holistic growth for the nation’s young generation.

The launch featured the maiden Ultimate Caregiver Enlightenment Symposium & Book Presentation, themed ‘United in Care: Guiding Hearts, Growing Minds.’

The event drew parents, teachers, and caregivers determined to raise emotionally balanced and resilient children in today’s increasingly complex world.

Speaking at the event, Madam Chyna Clifford, child development advocate, children’s book illustrator, and founder of MCPI, said the Initiative was inspired by the need to understand the inner world of children, a world often filled with wonder, dreams, anxieties, and untapped potential. She noted that societal pressures frequently drown out children’s emotions, leaving questions unanswered and feelings overlooked.

According to her, this year’s symposium focused on children on the autism spectrum, providing caregivers and educators with practical strategies to better support their unique developmental and emotional needs.

Madam Clifford stressed that MCPI seeks to bridge the gap between psychology and parenting by equipping caregivers with tools, resources, and knowledge to support children’s emotional and behavioural development both at home and in school.

“Emotional intelligence must be valued as highly as academic achievement if Nigeria is to build a stable, empathetic, and progressive society,” she said.

“If we are serious about raising a generation of emotionally intelligent, morally grounded, and socially responsible leaders, we must first understand the intricacies of a child’s mind. Healing the psyche of the child is healing the future of the nation,” she added.

The launch brought together educators, mental health professionals, and caregivers for a day of learning, reflection, and practical engagement.

Dr. Adaobi Okeke, a guest speaker, delivered a session on ‘Learning Differences & Neurodiversity (ADHD, Dyslexia & Autism),’ highlighting how parents and teachers can better support neurodivergent children both at home and in school.

She also emphasized the need to reduce stress during pregnancy as a critical factor affecting children’s neurodevelopment.

An obstetrician and gynaecologist, Dr. Maryam Tukur-Shagaya, spoke on “Postpartum Struggles and the Emotional Journey of Motherhood,” stressing the importance of supporting the mental wellbeing of new mothers, whose emotional challenges are often overlooked.

The founder of Ummi Women Empowerment Foundation (Ummi Africa), Mrs. Ruqayya Tofa-Basheer, encouraged women to prioritise self-care and work–life balance, offering practical strategies for emotional regulation in high-pressure environments.

An educationist and founder of Broadoaks British School, Mrs. Eni Ogon, highlighted the need for stronger collaboration between schools and parents to ensure children’s mental wellness is nurtured alongside academic development.

The symposium reflected MCPI’s core mission of fostering emotional resilience and holistic development at all stages of childhood.

In closing, the Initiative extended an open invitation to families, educators, and caregivers: “Come, learn, unlearn, and relearn with us – for the sake of the minds we’re nurturing and the future we’re shaping.”

With its official launch, according to the founder, MCPI has positioned itself at the forefront of national conversations on child psychology, emotional wellbeing, and the urgent need to raise a generation that is not only brilliant but also balanced, not only informed but also inspired, and not only successful but genuinely humane.

Egede said the organisation has continued to expand its network nationwide and remains committed to mobilising broad support for national stability, democratic continuity, and progressive governance.

He emphasised that the Vanguard’s structure spans all 36 states and the FCT, creating what he called a “robust national youth platform” dedicated to democratic participation.

  • I’m still an APC member, but now supports from back, says Lai Mohammed

I’m still an APC member, but now supports from back, says Lai Mohammed

IMMEDIATE past Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has explained that he remains a committed member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) but now operates behind the scenes rather than in the party’s frontline activities.

Mohammed stated this on Friday while speaking with journalists after delivering the 15th Convocation Lecture of Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State, titled ‘Don’t Just Graduate, Innovate.’

He explained that although his participation in the APC affairs is no longer overt, his loyalty to the ruling party and support for President Bola Tinubu remain unwavering.

“I am a very loyal member of the APC, and I’m 100 per cent behind this administration. I have played my role in the frontline. Whatever I need to do now, I will pass through the back channel, but I’m 100 per cent behind the administration.

“I have been privileged to serve as the longest serving Minister of Information and what I’m doing now is to give back to the society,” the former minister said.

Mohammed, who served for eight years in the immediate past late President Muhammadu Buhari administration, described himself as an ardent supporter of President Tinubu’s government.

He urged Nigerians to encourage the president in confronting the nation’s security challenges, which he said continue to restrain economic growth.

Mohammed also attributed his national prominence to years of rigorous opposition engagement during the administrations of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), particularly under former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Recalling his years as a spokesperson for the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and later the APC, Mohammed said perseverance and resilience shaped his political journey during the PDP’s dominance between 2006 and 2015.

“Through research-driven media interventions – press conferences, interviews or press releases, sometimes three times in one day – my team and I became more credible than the government, set the national agenda and effectively operated as an alternative government,” he said.

He recounted facing harassment, including arrests by the DSS and the police, noting that despite the intimidation, he never backed down.

Delivering the convocation lecture, Mohammed urged the graduating students to embrace innovation, courage, and resilience as they navigated an unpredictable world.

He stressed that a university degree is not a guarantee of success but a foundation upon which creativity and boldness must be built.

“Be bold enough to speak your mind even when it feels uncomfortable. Courage creates opportunities. The journey to success demands humility as much as brilliance. Failures are not dead ends; they are turning points,” he told the graduands.

Remarking, the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oyesoji Aremu said convocation lectures by distinguished Nigerians help students reflect on societal issues and their roles in solving them.

Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Prof. Bode Ayorinde emphasised that Achievers University prioritises discipline, academic excellence, and character formation.

He said the institution, now 18 years old, is known for high standards rather than certificate racketeering.

Ayorinde noted that the university rewards good conduct with monetary prizes, including N5 million for the best faculty, N2 million for second position, and N1 million for third – a policy he said has strengthened discipline among the over 5,000 students.

“We are for culture, academics, and discipline. Even though drugs take over tertiary institutions in Nigeria but not here; even cultisms are known in Nigerian varsities but not in Achievers University.

“We are not selling certificates. Our graduates can work with any international organisation. We have dismissed students for misconduct and refunded their fees. Here, drugs and cultism have no place,” he said.

Osun 2026: Adeleke validly nominated, elected as our candidate—Accord Party

•Acrobat dance without success must end—Okpebholo tells APC members ahead primary

The leadership of the Accord Party has affirmed that Governor Ademola Adeleke was validly nominated and elected as its governorship candidate for the 2026 Osun election, warning expelled and disgruntled members against stoking leadership confusion or attempting to undermine the party’s unified position ahead of the poll.

The Nation recalled that Adeleke, being the sole aspirant of the party emerged as the candidate of the party after polling 145 delegates’ vote out of 150 on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, a faction of the party at the national level led by its ex-presidential candidate, Prof. Chris Inumolen kicked against Adeleke.

Reacting to the development, the Osun State Chairman of Accord Party, Pastor Victor Akande, in a statement yesterday, refuted the claim by Inumolen, stating that “he has been formally expelled from the party due to several instances of anti-party conduct.”

Akande asserted that the Accord Party remains Nigeria’s best-organised and crises-free political party, saying “the party values transparency and discipline and holds democracy as a core value with no room for either godfatherism or political manipulation.”

He continued “The spokesperson, Forum of State Chairmen of Accord South West, Hon. Oke Rotimi, stated that the rumour making rounds that our National Chairman, Mr. Maxwell Mgbudem, Esq. has been suspended is absolutely and totally false.

“The National Executive Committee meeting on 3rd December 2025 passed a vote of confidence in Mgbudem by the whole National Working Committee. At no stage was there any form of disciplinary action against him as widely disseminated.”

Subsequently, Akande refuted the claims made against the party and its governorship candidate, Adeleke, clarifying that “Adeleke formally became a member of ACCORD on 6th November 2025 and he received public recognition from the party on 9th December 2025.

“He emerged as the valid winner at the ACCORD Party Primary conducted on 10th December 2025. The said primary election took place under strict guidelines approved by NEC and monitored by officials from INEC.”

Meanwhile, the Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo has tasked members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to unite and end the ‘acrobatic’ dance of the incumbent governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke in the 2026 gubernatorial race.

Okpebholo who is the chairman of the APC Primary Election Committee, during a stakeholders meeting held with members of the party ahead of the Saturday primary at the secretariat in Osogbo on Friday night, noted that the gathering is to further pronounce the APC’s resolve to democratic principles.

He announced that the mode of primary that will be adopted is affirmation.

He noted that all the 1,660 will be duly accredited at the venue of the primary before they are allowed into the venue.

“I want to appeal for unity in the APC after the primary. You must not allow internal bitterness to weaken our contest after the affirmation tomorrow.”

“We must return Osun State to the Progressive fold next year. You must all unite to end the acrobatic dance without success in this state. Are you not tired of what you are seeing?”

He assured that the primary will be free and fair in accordance with the assignment given to the committee by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.”

Permit to access flare gas to attract $2b investment

•NUPRC issues permits to 28 firms

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), yesterday, said the country is eyeing $2 billion investment from the permit to access gas; it has therefore issued permits to 28 companies.

The Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Gbenga Komolafe made this known in his address at the ‘Permit to Access Gas Flare Issuance Ceremony’ in  Abuja.

He also revealed that the programme is expected to generate over 100,000 direct and indirect jobs.

His words: “The programme is expected to attract up to $2 billion in investment. More than 100,000 direct and indirect jobs are projected to be created.

According to him, about 170,000 metric tons of LPG are estimated to be produced annually, enabling clean energy access for approximately 1.4 million households.”

Komolafe said the programme would unlock gas sufficient to produce about 3,000 MW of electricity.

He further disclosed that an NGFCP forum and College of awardees has been established to support project implementation and knowledge and change.

He stressed that NUPRC has also deepened engagement with international financiers and technology partners, including the technology providers and financiers supporting the programme.

NUPRC, he said, has completed extensive due diligence on the raw permit recipients.

He said the Commission has validated both technical feasibility and financial capability, ensuring the commercial and operational soundness of all approved projects.

He recalled that a total of 49 flare sites were auctioned, out of which 42 million have been awarded; the size between 250 and 300 million scuf of currently flare gas will be captured and commercialised, eliminating approximately 6 million tons of CO2 emissions annually.

He recalled the NGFCP was relaunched in September 2022, with the objective to transform flare gas from a long-standing environmental liability into an economic asset capable of driving industrial growth, improving sectors’ environmental credentials.

According to him, the target was to end a decade-long challenge and replace it with a wealth-generating, climate-positive opportunity.

He said by allocating flare size to competent third-party developers, NUPRC activated the commercially viable model, one of its kind globally, in which waste flare gas becomes value and environmental challenges give way to investment opportunities.

Komolafe described it as the new Nigeria Energy Story, which is being written collaboratively with all stakeholders.

He revealed that the programme is fully aligned with Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan, which outlines national pathways towards a cleaner, more resilient energy system.

Continuing, he said, the ” NGFCP is therefore not merely a policy initiative. It is a pillar in our quest to eliminate routine flaring, reduce emissions, and enhance Nigeria’s global credibility in energy transition commitments.”

140m gallons per day Adiyan water project ready next year- Sanwo-Olu

    •Governor commissions Akilo water facility

The 140 million gallons per day Adiyan water project will be ready next year, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has said.

Sanwo-Olu on Friday said the project was in line with his administration’s commitment to provide clean and reliable potable water to Lagos residents.

He said the Adiyan Waterworks One and Two Projects, with a capacity for 70 million gallons each per day when completed, would change everything about water production and usage in Lagos State.

Governor Sanwo-Olu made the remarks during a site inspection of the Adiyan Waterworks One and Two Projects and the Water Treatment Plant project in the Iju, Adiyan and Akute areas of Ogun State. The visits, according to the governor, were aimed at ensuring accountability, improving coordination with contractors and keeping major infrastructure projects on schedule.

Sanwo-Olu commended the level of work on the projects by the contractor, saying that over eight kilometres of pipes had been laid after the Lagos State Government got the rights of way from the Ogun State Government and that compensation had been paid on all the affected property.

He said the brown water in the Ogun River would be turned to blue and get to the water treatment plants before going to various houses in Lagos for consumption, stating that the Adiyan Water Works Two and rehabilitation of Adiyan Water Works One are expected to be completed before the end of next year.

Earlier, Sanwo-Olu commissioned the rehabilitated Akilo one million gallons per day water facility in the Ogba area of Lagos. The governor said that the project was in fulfilment of his administration’s commitment to partner with stakeholders in promoting the health and well-being of the people, as well as supplying water to residents.

The one million gallons per day, four thousand and five hundred cubic metres, Akilo Mini Waterworks was facilitated by WaterAid Nigeria, under the Urban Water and Sanitation Access Project, UWASAP, and implemented in partnership with the Lagos State Water Corporation (LSWC).

Speaking during the official commissioning of the project at Akilo Road, Ogba, in Ikeja, Lagos, Sanwo-Olu said his administration was working to ensure every neighbourhood gets an adequate supply of water built on a model of sustainability and investment in tandem with the Lagos State Government agenda.

The Governor urged residents to take ownership and protect the newly commissioned infrastructure by avoiding damaging water pipes and stopping the habit of bypassing meters, which undermines sustainability.

Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, commended WaterAid Nigeria for the intervention, which would provide public water for over 100,000 residents within Agege, Ifako-Ijaiye and other areas through household connections and digitally operated kiosks in strategic locations.

He described the project as a major milestone in Governor Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to improving water governance and raising the living standards of Lagos residents.

Wahab highlighted new upgrades, including a modern control panel room, a clean water tank, overhead tanks, automated motor kiosks and integrated water meters designed to strengthen transparency and ensure efficient water management.

Also speaking, the Country Director of WaterAid in Nigeria, Evelyn Mere, said the UWASAP project would increase access to water, sanitation and hygiene services in Lagos State for sustainable, resilient and affordable WASH services for users, as the organisation plans to replicate the model in other areas.

Mere disclosed that the Akilo project was designed as a replicable model, confirming that WaterAid is already set to rehabilitate the Ojokoro Waterworks to extend safe water access to another 100,000 residents.

In his address, the Managing Director of Lagos Water Corporation, Engr. Mukhtaar Tijani said the rehabilitated Akilo waterworks, which was built in 2012 and had been moribund before WaterAid Nigeria’s intervention, would be providing water to people in Akilo and Agege, as well as adjoining communities.

Also speaking, the Ologba of Ogba, Oba Egbeyemi Oladimeji, said the project represents renewed hope and a major step toward addressing long-standing water scarcity in the area.

He praised the Lagos State Government and implementing partners for their commitment and called on the community to ensure the facility’s protection and longevity.

Supreme Court upholds installation of Ekiti monarch 16yrs after

The Supreme Court has finally resolved the 16-year legal battle over the Alara stool of Aramoko-Ekiti, dismissing the appeal filed by Prince Segun Aderemi and upholding the enthronement of the late Oba Adegoke Olu-Adeyemi.

The Apex Court, in a judgment delivered by Justice Idris Mohammed on behalf of four other justices, ruled that the appeal lacked merit and failed to establish any exceptional circumstances that would justify overturning the concurrent decisions of the High Court and the Court of Appeal.

According to the court, Prince Aderemi did not present a compelling argument capable of dislodging the well-reasoned judgments of the lower courts, which it described as “sound, firm in law, and unimpeachable”.

The late monarch and Prince Aderemi are both from the same Arakale Ruling House.

Reacting to the judgment, human rights lawyer Kabir Akingbolu said the Supreme Court’s decision reaffirms that traditional leadership is ultimately determined by divine will and the collective choice of the people.

Akingbolu criticised the prolonged legal challenge, noting that the deceased monarch was not only Prince Aderemi’s relative but also his mentor.

Akingbolu added that the Supreme Court ruling reinforces the principle that no one can impose themselves on a community, stressing that peace has finally returned to Aramoko-Ekiti after many years of tension.
