Onuachu to miss Trabzonspor’s tie against  Besiktas

Trabzonspor will be without star striker Paul Onuachu for this weekend’s crucial Turkish Super Lig clash against Besiktas,

The Nigerian international, who returned to the former champions last summer from English Premier League side Southampton, has been one of Trabzonspor’s standout performers this season.

The lanky forward has found the back of the net 11 times across competitions, making him one of the club’s key attacking threats.

Onuachu will miss the high-profile encounter due to suspension after receiving a yellow card in his side’s last league outing.

The booking, picked up while he was deployed in an unfamiliar position, automatically rules him out of the match against Besiktas.

His absence is expected to be a major blow for Trabzonspor as they look to secure a positive result in the highly anticipated fixture.

GOtv Boxing Night 34:   Ghana’s Dodoo vows to ‘destroy’ ID Buster before Lagos fans

Ghanaian light-heavyweight contender, Nii Offei Dodoo, has hit back at Rasheed “ID Buster” Idowu ahead of their explosive showdown at GOtv Boxing Night 34, declaring that the Nigerian champion “will be shocked” when they meet on Boxing Day.

With the Nigeria–Ghana rivalry adding extra heat to the contest, Dodoo said he is arriving in Lagos with a clear mission: to end Idowu’s momentum and derail his growing status as a fan favourite. The Ghanaian, known for his durability, discipline and ability to absorb pressure, described the bout as “the perfect stage to humble a loud opponent.”

Responding to Idowu’s threats, Dodoo dismissed the champion’s confidence as misplaced.

“I’ve seen fighters like him before. Strong punchers who think power is everything,” Dodoo said. “But boxing is not a street fight. It’s strategy, timing, and patience. If ID Buster thinks he will overwhelm me, he is making a big mistake. I am coming to silence Lagos and show him what real ring intelligence looks like.”

Dodoo added that he believes Idowu has been “too comfortable” fighting at home. “He has the crowd, he has the noise, but none of that can help him when the bell rings,” he said. “I’ve trained for every scenario. I didn’t come to Nigeria to admire the city, I came to win.”

The highly anticipated Dodoo–Idowu clash is part of a stacked line-up for GOtv Boxing Night 34: Jams Festival, which will feature six thrilling bouts alongside live music and on-stage entertainment with artistes such as Shoday, in what organisers describe as one of December’s biggest sporting events.

GOtv Boxing Night 34 will air live on SS Africa 1 (GOtv Ch. 63, DStv Ch. 207). The event is sponsored by GOtv, with support from MultiChoice, ZetaWeb, TheCable and the Lagos State Sports Commission.

NDG: Ikpokpo reveals plans  to stop age cheats, talent poachers  ahead of Edo 2026

    By  Inioluwa  David

Sir Itiako Ikpokpo (KSM), Managing Director of Dunamis Icon Limited and Managing Consultant of the Niger Delta Games(NDG), has  announced sweeping reforms aimed at strengthening integrity, talent development and fairness ahead of the second edition of the regional  event to be held  next February in Edo State

Speaking during a press conference yesterday  in Lagos, Ikpokpo who doubles as  the co-chairman  of Edo 2026 event, said  the NDG  under the patronage of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), remains a vital platform for discovering young athletes, adding  unfair practices such as age cheating, athlete poaching and the use of mercenaries  which had  long undermined sports development in Nigeria would not be condoned  at the regional festival.

He  stated that many of the challenges facing sports development  stem from states prioritizing medals over true grassroots growth.

According to him, every state wants to win at all costs, creating an environment where coaches and officials constantly poach athletes from one state to another in search of better medal prospects.

He said the NDG  organisers are building a new culture that demands honesty, responsibility and fair competition from all participating states.

“The maximum eligible age has been reduced from 25 to 20, and states have been warned that the screening process will be stricter than ever,” Ikpokpo said, adding an athlete must be 19-plus but not older than 20 at the time of the festival.

He continued:“ Registration will be done through the DIAR system, with personal details fully uploaded for verification. The screening committee, led by senior officials described as people of strong integrity, will ensure that any state presenting over-aged athletes is sanctioned, including possible exclusion from future editions, though no financial penalties will be issued.

“To curb dominance and ensure fairness,  each of the competing states will be allowed the same number of  270 athletes  and they will also have the same number of athletes  per events  for fairness.”

He  stressed that every state has home-grown talents and must take responsibility for developing them instead of depending on athletes from other regions, noting the NDG belongs to every state in the region  and their role as organisers, is only to provide a platform for healthy  competition but  not to “own” athletes.

Ahead of next NDG in Edo State, Ikpokpo said  preparations  are already underway with preliminary inspections of facilities , noting that the welfare and accommodation of athletes remain top priorities. “The University of Benin will be in session  in February at the time of the next NDG but  alternative accommodation venues are being considered to ensure athletes are treated with respect and housed comfortably,” he noted.

On the gains of the NDG  after the  hugely successful inaugural edition, Ikpokpo  stressed that sports administrators must be intentional in planning, saying that Nigeria cannot continue to rely on “accidental winners.”

He stated that the NDG  would compete favourably with international events in terms of organization and standard and maintaining this level, he said, requires deliberate effort, strong structures and proper budgeting.

Speaking on the future of the NDG , Ikpokpo  said organisers in conjunction  with the NDDC, will  do what  is necessary  to sustain the momentum , explaining  that  discovered talents  would  be exposed  to the best  practices in terms of training and grooming.

“ In the last edition in Uyo , over 600 potential young athletes were identified out of which  150 were selected based on performance criteria,” he continued.

“The High  Performance Centre in Port Harcourt, although not at the ideal standard, has been earmarked as a training hub, especially for holiday and pre-competition camps.”

At the well-attended press briefing  in Lagos  with  Ikpokpo   were members of  the NDG teams including  Fred Edoreh, the Project Director, Harry Iwuala, the Chairman of Communications and publicity, Edi Lawani, the Chairman of Culture and Entertainment, Godwin Enakhena, the Chairman of the Scouting team and Onome Obruthe, Chairman of the Accommodation and Logistics

The day produced straight-set master classes, nail-biting five-set duels and key results that tightened the race as the final phase edges toward its conclusion.

In the men’s division, CNS Spikers continued their late push with a composed 3–1 victory over UCEM (25-21, 19-25, 22-25, 17-25). • Egypt teammates rally behind unsettled Salah before AFCON

Egypt teammates rally behind unsettled Salah before AFCON

While the future of Mohamed Salah at Liverpool hangs in the balance, Egypt teammates have rallied behind the national team captain ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The record seven-time continental champions are in Group B with Angola, South Africa and Zimbabwe, and will be based in southern coastal city Agadir throughout the first round.

“Players like him do not get benched,” said striker Ahmed “Kouka” Hassan on social media, referring to Salah being a substitute in the last three Liverpool fixtures, and coming on only once.

“If he starts on the bench, you must make sure he is the first to come on, after 60 minutes, 65 at the latest.

“Mo is not just a teammate, he is a leader, a legend for club and country. Keep working hard brother, every situation in life is temporary, moments like this pass, what stays is your greatness.”

Head coach and former star Hossam Hassan posted a photograph of himself and Salah and a message: “Always a symbol of perseverance and strength.”

“The greatest Liverpool legend of all time,” wrote winger Ahmed “Zizo” El Sayed. Goalkeeper Mohamed Sobhy called Salah “always the best”.

Liverpool have struggled in their title defence this season and lie 10th after 15 rounds, 10 points behind leaders Arsenal. Salah has also battled with just four goals in 13 top-flight appearances.

After twice surrendering the lead in a 3-3 draw at Leeds United last Saturday, Salah told reporters “it seems like the club has thrown me under the bus”.

“I think it is very clear that someone wanted me to get all of the blame (for the slump)… someone does not want me in the club.”

Salah was omitted from the squad that travelled to Milan for a Champions League clash with Inter on Tuesday and has hinted that he may not play for Liverpool again.

Saudi Arabia says it will do “whatever it can” to recruit Salah during the mid-season transfer window, a Public Investment Fund (PIF) source in the kingdom told AFP.

Although Egypt last won the AFCON 15 years ago in Luanda, Salah, 33, believes they will lift the trophy again before he retires.

“It will happen – that is what I believe. It is a great feeling every time you step on the field wearing the Egyptian colours.”

Salah has suffered much heartbreak in four AFCON tournaments as Egypt twice finished runners-up and twice exited in the round of 16.

He created the goal that put the Pharaohs ahead in the 2017 final, but Cameroon clawed back to win 2-1 in Libreville.

Hosts and title favourites Egypt were stunned by South Africa in the first knockout round two years later, conceding a late goal to lose 1-0.

Egypt reached the final again in 2022 only to lose on penalties to Senegal after 120 goalless minutes in Yaoundé.

In Cote d’Ivoire  last year, Salah suffered a hamstring injury against Ghana and took no further part in the tournament. Egypt lost on penalties to the Democratic Republic of Congo in a last-16 clash.

This year, Egypt boast an array of attacking talent with Salah, Omar Marmoush from Manchester City, Mostafa Mohamed of Nantes and Mahmoud ‘Trezeguet’ Hassan and Zizo from Cairo giants Al Ahly.

Group B is the only one of the six in Morocco featuring two qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, with Egypt and South Africa heading to the global showpiece in North America.

South Africa exceeded expectations by finishing third at the 2024 AFCON, but Belgian coach Hugo Broos expects a tougher campaign in a tournament that kicks off on December 21.

“It will be harder because every opponent will be more motivated to beat us after our bronze medals,” said the tactician who guided Cameroon to the 2017 AFCON title.

Angola and Zimbabwe recently changed coaches with France-born Patrice Beaumelle and Romanian Mario Marinica hired.

The Angolans have reached the quarter-finals three times, including last year, while the Zimbabweans have never gone beyond the first round.
