Enugu mark Int’l Olympic Day amid youth celebration

Enugu State, at the weekend, joined the rest of the world to mark this year’s International Olympic Day, with the state’s Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development Barr. Lloyd Ekweremadu admonishing  the youth to actively participate in various sporting programmes that would prepare them to win laurels in the future Olympics.

The commissioner reiterated the determination of the Dr. Peter Mbah-led administration to reposition the state as the premier sports hub in Nigeria and Africa.

The event organised by the state government took place at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.

Ekweremadu explained that for the state, the 2024 Olympic Day event was a celebration of peace, sports excellence, creating awareness about the forthcoming Olympic Games, and drumming up support for Lucy Ejike, who would represent Nigeria at the coming Paralympics.

The Commissioner, who described sports as a huge business, equally urged  the younger generations to consider sports as a veritable avenue to put the state and Nigeria on the global map for good reasons.

He explained various initiatives introduced by Governor Peter Mbah-led administration to develop grassroots sports, saying that although they were at the rebuilding phase, the initiatives would produce more world-class athletes that would represent the state in local and international tournaments , including future Olympic Games.

He said:  “The World Olympic Day Celebration here in Enugu is for us a celebration of peace and sports excellence and creating awareness. This is especially so since we have one of our own, Lucy Ejike, who will be representing Nigeria in power-lifting.

“Enugu is the home of sports excellence in Nigeria, and then most recently, Rangers International of Enugu won the NPFL title and getting ready to represent Nigeria on the continental stage. So, we are just sending that message that we are still here and that we will continue to be here, not just as home for sports excellence, but also sports stories in Nigeria.”

He, however, said the administration was poised to do more.

“Just last week, after the State Executive Council Meeting, we had the privilege to announce that the Council had approved the revamping of various recreation parks across Enugu city for a start; and each park will feature sporting facilities, including five-aside pitches, basketball courts, and the tennis courts to allow for more opportunities for people to exercise their talents and give us a larger pool to select from .

“So, we have huge ambition and targets that we have set for ourselves, and we are more concerned with meeting those targets. We are more concerned that we build grassroots sports. We are more concerned that we deliver on new sporting facilities in the state. And we are also concerned that we host the 2026 National Sports Festival,” he concluded.

A member of the Umuaka Chinemerem Volleyball Club, Odinakachukwu Ikegbue, expressed confidence that Enugu young athletes would rule future Olympics, given the mentality of the present administration towards sports development.

“What makes players perform is their mindset, their spirit and their soul. Every player I know that trains in this stadium, especially for volleyball, is very prepared and focused. All we just need is the support of the state. Since the state government has decided to support us with equipment, infrastructure, and motivation, I believe we will do a lot of exploits,” she stated.

Speaking on behalf of the Zenith Skating Team, Master Elias Ijenu recalled, “We participated in a competition organised by  the Skaters Federation in Calabar and came back with an outstanding result. We believe that collaborating with the state government based on sponsorship, we are going to make the state and our nation proud.

Meanwhile, the theme for this year’s Olympic Day celebration was “Let’s Move and Celebrate.”

Italy confirm Spalletti as manager after Euros exit

Italy will keep Luciano Spalletti as manager until 2026 as planned despite their Euro 2024 campaigning ending in the last 16, Italian Football Federation President Gabriele Gravina has said.

Spalletti’s side were beaten 2-0 by Switzerland on Saturday, having disappointed in their Euros title defence, but the manager, who replaced Roberto Mancini last August on a contract until 2026, will be given more time.

“Yesterday there was a long chat with the coach and I think it is unthinkable to solve problems by abandoning a project that is multi-year, you cannot abandon the project after eight or nine months,” Gravina told reporters. “A coach who has been in charge for nine or 10 games is central to the project, and he cannot always have all the players available.

“(Spalletti) has our confidence. He must work because in 60 days there is already a new challenge.”

While confirming the coach, Gravina reflected on the disappointment of Euro 2024, where they were outclassed by Spain and needed a last-minute goal against Croatia to stay in the tournament before the final knockout blow by Switzerland.

“What unfortunately remains is the disappointment of not having been able to demonstrate to those who followed us everything that has been done,” Gravina said.

“We have not shown the character to make up for the shortcomings that unfortunately we have. Last night we shared the responsibilities with everyone. We are all responsible.”

Gravina also expressed his concerns that Serie A clubs do not give enough space to young Italian players, and Spalletti reiterated that need as he intends to freshen up the squad.

“Yesterday’s game knocks us back to zero and we have to start from there. We need to rejuvenate the squad and recreate a group,” Spalletti said.

“I haven’t had the answers I was looking for so far and it is necessary to recreate from below, a group that has new strengths.

“It’s difficult to find another (Giorgio) Chiellini or another (Leonardo) Bonucci, but by giving space to (Riccardo) Calafiori you can find important players again.”

Spalletti’s first job when taking over was to qualify for the Euros, but he is well aware that they have failed to meet expectations since then and is already looking to the future.

“In yesterday’s game we took an important step backwards that cannot be accepted,” he said.

  • Juventus sign Brazil’s Luiz from Aston Villa

Juventus sign Brazil’s Luiz from Aston Villa

Juventus signed Brazil midfielder Douglas Luiz from Aston Villa in a deal worth a reported £42.3 million ($53.5 million).

Luiz agreed a five-year contract with the Italian club as he became the latest player to leave Villa Park due to the Premier League club’s financial fair-play cost-cutting.

Signed from Manchester City in 2019, the 26-year-old spent five years with Villa and was a key player in their surprise fourth-place finish in the Premier League last season.

Luiz, who scored 22 goals in 204 appearances for Villa, completed his medical ahead of the Juventus move while on international duty with Brazil at the Copa America.

“I’m really happy to be a Bianconero. I can’t wait to play in the Allianz Stadium. See you soon and Forza Juve!” Luiz said in a social media video.

The Premier League club announced Luiz’s departure on their website, saying: “Aston Villa can confirm that Douglas Luiz has joined Juventus.”

Luiz, who helped Brazil win a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, was voted Villa’s Player of the Year in 2022-23.

But Villa’s need to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) forced boss Unai Emery to agree to Luiz’s sale.

PSR rules permit losses of up to £105 million over three years.

Villa have already sold Tim Iroegbunam to Everton for £9 million during the close-season, while Chelsea paid £19 million for Omari Kellyman.

Tottenham have been linked with Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey, while Emery has signed Chelsea’s Ian Maatsen and Everton’s Lewis Dobbin.

Luiz will be joining a Juventus side that finished third in Serie A last season, 24 points behind champions Inter Milan.

  • Osaka  targets Wimbledon win  ahead of daughter’s birthday

Osaka  targets Wimbledon win  ahead of daughter’s birthday

Naomi Osaka said she hopes to mark her daughter’s first birthday by making a winning return to Wimbledon thanks to a helping hand from Novak Djokovic.

The Japanese superstar, a four-time Grand Slam champion and a former world number one, hasn’t played at the All England Club since 2019.

Osaka takes on Diane Parry of France in her opener today , the day before she celebrates daughter Shai’s first birthday.

“She’s one on Tuesday so it will be very exciting day,” said the 26-year-old.

“It’s been a great journey and I’m lucky and blessed to have happy girl with lots of energy. It’s a dream to be here with her now.”

Osaka’s four majors came on the hard courts of the US Open and Australian Open.

She made the third round at Wimbledon in 2017 and 2018, losing to former champions Venus Williams and Angelique Kerber respectively.

Her most recent appearance in 2019 was brief with a first round loss to Yulia Putintseva.

In order to improve her chances at this year’s tournament, Osaka has sounded out seven-time Wimbledon champion Djokovic.

“I tried to slide on grass. I asked Novak how he did it. I have tried a few times but it has been scary. I think I may have to wait for the grass to get brown a little,” she said.

“But he told me no matter if he falls he keeps getting up and doing it. He said I have to overcome the fear of getting hurt.”

Osaka, who only returned to the tour at the start of the year after maternity leave, is ranked at 113 in the world and required a wild card to play at Wimbledon.

At the recent French Open, she gave world number one Iga Swiatek a mighty scare, holding a match point in their second round clash before the Pole prevailed.

Since then she made the quarter-finals of the grass-court tournament at ’s-Hertogenbosch and pushed world number eight Zheng Qinwen to three sets in the opening round in Berlin.

“It’s a little weird as I feel I have been playing really well this year but just not making a lot of quarter-finals,” said Osaka. “I feel that had I not played Iga, I could have gone a long way in Paris. I just need some luck.”

She added: “I lost first round in Berlin, but I learned lot. I’m feeling pretty good about myself. People tell me I have game for grass.”

  • Euro 2024: Bellingham rescues England to book quarter-final spot

Euro 2024: Bellingham rescues England to book quarter-final spot

Jude Bellingham rescued England from crashing out of Euro 2024 against Slovakia with a stunning 95th-minute equaliser before Harry Kane’s early extra-time winner sent the sub-par pre-tournament favourites into the quarter-finals.

Slovakia started far sharper than England and gave their opponents several warnings before Ivan Schranz placed a deft finish past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the 25th  minute.

England, who will next face Switzerland, had come back to win their last three Euro games in which they conceded first, including the last edition’s semi-final, and thought they were level shortly after the break but Phil Foden was clearly offside before tapping home.

Harry Kane uncharacteristically headed a Foden free kick wide and Declan Rice hit the post as Slovakia were pinned deep in their own half late on, though England seemed to lack belief as their fans grew ever more frustrated.

But Bellingham, a day after his 21st  birthday, equalised with an incredible bicycle kick at the death to take the game to extra time with England’s first shot on target.

And England took less than a minute after the restart to take the lead when Kane headed past the despairing Martin Dubravka from close range to complete a remarkable turnaround.

Slovakia had faded as the game drew on and went closest to an equaliser of their own just before halftime in extra time, when Peter Pekarik kneed a dangerous cross over the bar.

England repelled a late wave of balls into the box to secure a fortunate victory and set up a quarter-final clash with Switzerland in Duesseldorf on Saturday.

They will, however, need to be a far better against the Swiss, who outplayed defending champions Italy in the last-16 and were unfortunate to concede a late equaliser against Germany in the group stage.

  • Amuneke set to take over at Heartland

Amuneke set to take over at Heartland

Former  Nigeria and Barcelona winger Emmanuel Amuneke is set to return to coaching after a year away from the sidelines.

Amuneke’s last role was with Zambia’s Zanaco FC, where he served as both coach and consultant before leaving in 2023.

He recently applied for  the Super Eagles Super Eagles head coach position, but the  Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) opted for Finidi George instead. Finidi resigned after Nigeria’s poor performances against South Africa and Benin in June, leaving the position vacant. The NFF plans to hire a foreign Technical Adviser for the team.

There are indications  that  Amuneke is now close to securing a coaching job with Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) club Heartland FC.

SCORENigeria claimed that he has already been given the job and is set to be officially announced soon. Amuneke, who has been quietly working with his hometown club, has started recruiting players for the upcoming season.

Heartland FC were relegated to the NPFL after finishing in the 19th position on the 20-team table last season.

The club are reportedly planning to buy the NPFL slot of Beyond Limits, who earned promotion from the  Nigeria National League (NNL) but face participation issues due to their affiliation with Remo Stars.

Amuneke, 53, has extensive coaching experience in domestic and international football.

He previously coached Julius Berger and Ocean Boys in  Nigeria before leading the Nigeria U17 team to World Cup victory in 2015.

He also managed Tanzania’s national team, leading them to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, and had roles with Egypt’s Misr El Makkasa and as assistant coach of Nigeria’s national team.

  • Napoli silent on Osimhen after sacking six

Napoli silent on Osimhen after sacking six

Nigerian ace linked to Man United again

Former Italian champions Napoli remain silent on the future of Nigeria international striker Victor Osimhen despite announcing the departure of six first-team players.

Yesterday, Napoli  officially confirmed that six players will be leaving the club upon the expiry of their contracts, including Piotr Zielinski, Leander Dendoncker, Pierluigi Gollini, Hubert Idasiak, Diego Demme and Hamed Traore.

“We would like to thank each and every one of them for their professionalism and commitment to the Napoli cause during their time in Naples. We wish them all the best for their future endeavours,” the club wrote in a brief statement on the club website.

All six of those players had been under contract until June 30, so they will no longer be employed by the club from today.

Meanwhile, Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis(ADL) is ready to sell Osimhen this summer even as new coach Antonio Conte have accepted that  the Nigeria international will leave the Azzurri in the coming months.

Napoli’s asking price of €120m  for their star man has seemingly stopped any club from truly getting matters started yet.

Manchester United have been credited with an interest in the last few months, with it even, somewhat oddly, suggested that they would be willing to offer cash plus Hojlund to try and get the Nigerian to Old Trafford this summer.

That idea was quickly dismissed at the time but La Repubblica stated  that it’s not completely dead yet, even though Manchester United have also been talking to Joshua Zirkzee and his entourage.

“As decided some time ago, Victor Osimhen will leave Napoli in this transfer window. PSG and Chelsea are always paying close attention to the Nigerian striker, but Manchester United also continues to monitor his situation,” they claimed. “In recent months, United have tried to convince Napoli for Osimhen, offering money plus the price tag of Rasmus Hojlund.”

“A proposal that could be resubmitted, but Antonio Conte’s goal remains Romelu Lukaku. Napoli’s attack market will start after the sale of Osimhen, with many names proposed but with only one great goal: the Belgian goal scorer.”

JUST IN: Ekiti govt rejects TCN, BEDC planned two-month power outage

The Ekiti state government has rejected the proposed plan by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to put the state in blackout for nine hours daily for the two months effective from July 1.

The government said that the planned power outage amounts to unacceptable economic, financial and social price to be paid by the citizens of the state.

The TCN and BEDC had in notices, announced that TCN’s schedule to carry out critical maintenance work on the 132kV Akure Osogbo transmission line which would involve the installation of Optical Ground Wire and other activities requiring outage on the affected network for safe working space.

TCN and BEDC had stated that the maintenance would be between July 1 and August 31 and that there would be power outage in Ondo and Ekiti states for nine hours from 8am daily throughout the two-month period.

But, the Commissioner for Infrastructure and Public Utility, Prof Bolaji Aluko said that the government was not informed nor was approval sought and obtained from the Ekiti State Electricity Regulatory Bureau, saddled by law with the authority to regulate the electricity industry in Ekiti State.

In a letter written by the Commissioner for Public Utility, Mobolaji Aluko, to the MD/CEO, TCN, the MD/CEO, BEDC and the Chairman, NERC Abuja, dated 30 June, the commissioner consequently called for the immediate suspension of the plan.

He also called for an emergency meeting with the regional heads of TCN, BEDC and National Electricity Regulatory Commission on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, in his office in Ado Ekiti “to devise an alternative and far less adverse plan to achieve the same stated aims”.

The letter reads: “Our attention has been called to public notifications, both in print and in jingles in English and in Yoruba, of the intention of BEDC under advice by TCN to disrupt power supply to the transmission stations in Akure and Ado-Ekiti – and in effect to adversely affect the Ekiti State and Ondo State areas – for nine hours each day (8.00am to 5.00pm) from July 1, 2024 to August 31, 2024.

“We request prompt attention to this matter while we are eager to work collaboratively toward a sustainable solution that will benefit both citizens of the state and the Ekiti State Electricity Supply Industry.”
