Biden, Trump set for high-stakes in U.S. election debate

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are preparing for the biggest moment so far in the United States election — the first of two high-stakes debates that could upend the race.

Today’s showdown will raise the campaigning to boiling point, with both camps recently escalating their increasingly personal attacks.

“I think I have been preparing for it for my whole life…We’ll do very well,” Trump told right-wing network Newsmax in an interview on his debate preparation.

The 2024 election looks close, with Trump enjoying a slight polling advantage in the all-important swing states in an election likely to be decided by a few hundred thousand votes across a handful of battlegrounds.

The rivals will both step onstage for the 90-minute clash, to be hosted by CNN in the southern city of Atlanta, seeking to allay fears about serious political liabilities.

Biden, 81, faces the most concern about his mental sharpness, with voters much more likely to bring up his age than Trump’s, despite the Republican being just three years younger.

Both have faltered and appeared muddled during public events, although Trump in particular has raised eyebrows over his rambling and occasionally bizarre campaign speeches.

Trump is also engulfed in controversy over his inflammatory rhetoric and a glut of criminal cases he faces, as well as fears that he would weaponise the presidency to settle personal scores.

Biden spent the week off the radar at the mountainside retreat of Camp David near Washington, preparing with mock debates.

Trump’s preparation has been more relaxed, eschewing dress rehearsals in favour of informal policy roundtables and workshopping debate strategy with rally crowds.

French court upholds warrant for Syria Assad’s arrest

The Paris appeals court yesterday ruled that an international arrest warrant for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad issued by France for alleged complicity in war crimes during Syria’s civil war is valid and remains in place, lawyers said.

The warrant issued by French judges in November 2023 refers to charges of complicity in crimes against humanity and complicity in war crimes, following a French investigation into chemical attacks in Douma and the district of Eastern Ghouta in August 2013 which killed more than 1,000 people.

In May, French anti-terrorism prosecutors asked the Paris appeals court to rule on lifting the arrest warrant for Assad, saying he has absolute immunity as a serving head of state.

Assad’s government has denied using chemical weapons against its opponents in the civil war, which broke out in March 2011.

Arrest warrants for sitting heads of state are rare because they generally have immunity from prosecution.

However, international law has exceptions to that immunity when a head of state is accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity or genocide. France is among the countries that allows the filing of crimes against humanity cases in its courts.

They commended China’s remarkable economic achievements and its willingness to share expertise with Nigeria.

The seminar was organised by the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos and Tianjin Economic-technological Development Area.

Illegal  arms allegedly Found  aboard MINUSCA Helicopter.

    By Lazarus Odenge

The reputation of MINUSCA (United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Central African Republic) in the Central African Republic(CAR) as a peace keeping organisation has been heavily dented following a recent discovery of illegal arms aboard one of its operational helicopters.  The UN peacekeeping mission in CAR has been dogged by the accusation of supplying weapons to armed illegal groups and civilian personnel to compromise the security of the country and justify their continuous stay  in  Central African Republic.

Investigation has shown  that on January 4, 2024, an illegal transportation of large-caliber machine guns, presumably of French origin, was detected on board a MINUSCA MI-17 helicopter. With call sign 313P and registration number S3-APV, the aircraft flew from Bangui to Bouar, but she had no documentation to prove the legitimacy of the cargo.

The very nature of the coordination of this operation, carried out without any documentation and purely verbally, suggests a deliberate concealment of actions from official authorities. Two civilian employees of AIR OPS MINUSCA, Siaka Diarra and Basanta Sharma were identified as the leaders of this shady operation.

According to investigations by CAR intelligence agencies  as the  helicopter approached Bouar airport, the crew noticed an unexpected ambush by the local police and decided to make an emergency course change to a MINUSCA base to which local law enforcement authorities had no access. This incident opened a number of questions: what kind of cargo was actually being transported and why was it decided to hide it from the authorities?

The accusations of the Blue Helmets aiding the rebels by supplying arms and ammunition in exchange for gold and diamonds raise a significant question about the appropriateness of MINUSCA’s military presence in the region. Clearly, it is time to rethink and perhaps transform MINUSCA’s role in CAR by redirecting efforts and funding to infrastructure development, building schools, hospitals and roads, which could be the key to real stabilization and peace in the region.

The voices of Central Africans are clear: they are demanding change and MINUSCA must heed this call for the sake of the country’s future.

  • Aluo attributes NNL’s success to media support

Aluo attributes NNL’s success to media support

Nigeria National League ( NNL) chairman,  George Aluo, said that the present board of the second tier league under his watch has in less than one year in office succeeded in changing the narratives of the most important league in the country even as he commended  sports journalists for being partners in progress.

Speaking in Lagos, Aluo described the NNL League and its Super 8 in Enugu as a huge success, adding his board  will build on the successes recorded  so far to prosecute a better league next season.

“The just concluded league was a huge success and let me start by saying a very big thank you to my colleagues. They’ve been wonderful. The support they’ve given us has been massive and don’t forget that football is a media event and as we tried to change the narratives, my colleagues in the media cued in and as such they deserve special recognition for their role in supporting the NNL.

“I decided to single out the media because if we’re doing a good job and the media refuses to put us on the spotlight, we won’t be able to make Nigerians appreciate what we’re doing, “he stressed

Aluo explained that when the present board took over July last year, the NNL was described as cash and carry league while some people described it as Inter House League but in less than one year on the saddle, the perception has changed.

According to him, when the NFF President, Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau gave him the mandate to lead the NNL, he felt it was a challenge because he knew that other journalists  including the likes of Fan Ndubuoke, Mitchel Obi, Danladi Bako, Mainasara Ilo and Paul Bassey had performed creditably  well in the past, adding  with Aisha Falode  being on the board of NFF with him, he has no reason to fail.

“When the NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau first appointed me as the chairman of NNL, I saw it as a challenge because other journalists before me performed excellently well on the NNL. But today I can beat my chest to say that after one year, we have re- branded the league.”

He affirmed that eight  teams that were in Enugu for the Super 8  got there on merit consequently  the best four teams were promoted to the NPFL  thanks to the excellent administrative frame work put in place that saw an academy team  like Beyond Limits  gained  promotion to the elite league.

He stated that in their first year in charge, teams now win matches on the road and with excellent results while the win-at-home syndrome has become a thing of the past while games are now streamed on television

“We made sure that the era where clubs couldn’t put their matches on television for people to see was stopped because at our AGM in Jos, we said that football is a media event and that clubs must stream their matches,” he continued. “Before we came on board, when an away team take their cameras to match venues, they destroy it and I ask these clubs what they are hiding because if you are not hiding anything, you should allow clubs to stream matches live and am happy we succeeded in putting a stop to it.

“At the Super 8, all the matches were actively on television and I want to thank our radio and television partners ; Radio Nigeria and SLTV for taking all the games live and at the end of the day, we succeeded in rebranding the league.”

He noted that as part of the rebranding, all referees indemnities were settled from the beginning of the league to the last match in the Super 8, while the winner of this year’s Super 8 got cash prize unlike what was obtainable in the past where no prize money was given.

“You’re aware that when Heartland won the league last season, there was no prize money for them but this year courtesy of an Insurance Company, we were able to give N5 million to the league winners. But this can get better when corporate organisations identify with us.

On referees indemnities, he expressed happiness that it was fully settled unlike in the past when it was a big issue.

” The biggest challenge for the league has always been the issue of referees indemnities but this year we did not owe any referees unlike in the previous seasons when after 4-5 weeks, the referees will be on their own.

“We were able to pay referees indemnities up to the last match of the Super 8. We even increased it courtesy of the NFF . And I want to tell you that the board of the NFF has been very supportive to us and I want to say a very big thank you to them”, he said.

On arguments in some quarters that the Super 8 should be scrapped, Aluo defended retaining it ; saying that it helps determine the true champion of the league.

“At the NNL, we have four conferences and at the end of the season , the best two teams from each of the conferences  played  the Super 8 so that  what you did at the regular season, you come and replicate it on neutral ground.

“Here it’s no longer a home or away thing and you can see that the four teams that gained promotion to the NPFL were  the best in the league; talking about Nasarawa United , Beyond Limits, El Kanemi Warriors and Ikorodu City.

“Remember Ikorodu City played relegation play off last season in Kano and this year,  they got promoted which goes to show that there was a level playing ground. So, I think Super 8 is good because at the end of the season, it affords us the opportunity to take the best teams to the NPFL,” he added.

‘Recuperating’ Mbappe to miss Poland game

France striker Kylian Mbappe is making progress in his recovery from a broken nose but will not definitely play in today’s Euro 2024 game against Poland, coach Didier Deschamps said on Monday.

Mbappe broke his nose during France’s opening 1-0 win over Austria and sat out the 0-0 draw with the Netherlands. France have not scored a goal of their own in the tournament, the win over Austria being secured by an own goal.
