Omotoyossi prays Benin  beat Nigeria to World Cup ticket

Former Metz and Al-Nassr forward Rasak Omotoyossi is hopeful that his beloved Benin Republic can beat Nigeria to the 2026 FIFA World Cup ticket.

According to  Soccernet Nigeria, Benin Republic have never qualified for the World Cup in history but the Cheetahs have ignited the hopes of every Beninese  on earth following their impressive start to the qualifying campaign.

Initially regarded as one of the underdogs in Group C, Benin currently boast seven points to share top spot with South Africa and Rwanda and stay four points ahead of three-time African champions, Nigeria.

The Cheetahs have recorded two wins and one draw in their first four games, with their most remarkable victory coming against Nigeria on June 10.

Raphael Onyedika handed the Super Eagles the lead in that encounter before goals from Jodel Oluwafemi Dossou and Steve Mounié turned the tie in the favour of the Gernot Rohr-tutored side.

With that victory, former Benin forward Rasak Omotoyossi believes the Cheetahs can emulate the heroics of Togo, who stunned illustrious foes to make their first-ever appearance at the Mundial in 2006.

“Well, let me say history can happen sometimes,” the former Zamalek forward told Brila. “When Togo went to the World Cup, nobody believed. So Benin has the chance now, they just have to use it now. So, the game remains up to them.

“Nigeria has to work hard if they want to become African giants that they are.”

The Super Eagles’ next World Cup qualifying games are against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March 2025.

Rangers reiterate readiness for CAF Champions League

Newly crowned champions of the 2023/2024 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), Rangers International FC of Enugu, have announced their readiness to compete in the next season’s CAF Champions League in August.

He also disclosed that the club had since scouted for seasoned players across the continent, whom he believed would bolster the squad to navigate the demanding competition.

Amobi, who commended Governor Peter Mbah and the state’s  ministry of sports for the support the club received during the last season’s campaign, also lauded its shirt sponsors, Afrinvest, for going outside the scope of the contract to ensure that Rangers performed better away from home.

For him, the victory in the just concluded NPFL league season, meant that the club must look at general development, particularly the facilities.

“What our victory means is that we must look at the development of the facilities.

“We’ve gone round Africa to scout for players that will fit into era we’re entering now, which is the CAF Champions League. We’re going to do our best to make us proud on the African continent.

“We’re not just going to participate but compete favourably because we now have the means and the support base to do that.

“We believe that that the kind of coaches we have, we will rule Africa,” Ezeaku said.

Napoli to cut  Osimhen transfer fee to €100M

Eagles striker to grace Davido’s, Chioma’s wedding

Still being pilloried for his  video rants against former Super Eagles coach Finidi George, Victor Osimhen‘s future at Napoli hangs in the balance even as the Italian Serie A side are reportedly ready to drop their staggering asking price for the Nigerian striker.

The 25-year-old is looking for a move away from Serie A but Napoli’s initial €150M release clause has warned off potential suitors that include Chelsea and Arsenal.

According to Daniele Longo of Calciomercato.com, the Partenopei now may be ready to lower that initial valuation to €100M, in the hope that they can free up much needed transfer funds for new boss Antonio Conte, who is understood to be desperate to land Belgian international striker Romelu Lukaku this summer.

Longo noted that Chelsea, who were understood to be in pole-position to sign the Nigerian international, have never opened any negotiation with the 2023 Serie A champions.

The only avenues open at this time seem to be the Saudi Pro-League, where a reported salary of €40M a season has been offered, or Paris Saint-Germain, with Osimhen not keen on either option, preferring a move to the English Premier League.

Meanwhile, Napoli’s new coach, Antonio Conte, has presumably identified Romelu  Lukaku as one of his primary targets ahead of the new season, but a deal for the Chelsea striker can’t be completed until Osimhen is sold, leaving things on standby.

In a related development, holidaying Osimhen will expectedly be one of the high profiles at the eagerly anticipated marriage ceremony of music icon David Adeleke, a.k.a Davido, and his fiancée, Chioma  Roland, in Lagos today.

Osimhen is reportedly one of the first players invited to the star-studded event as a video showed the Napoli striker  excitedly accepting an invitation to the high octane event.

The thrill was captured in a video posted by Davido on his Instagram story, in which the Napoli striker was seen jumping with delight to Chris Brown’s hit “Hmmm,” which includes Davido himself.

With the wedding invitation in hand, Osimhen’s contagious eagerness emphasised the importance of the occasion.

In response to the lively scene, Davido, who has been promoting the wedding across social media platforms with the hashtag #CHIVIDO2024, captioned the video on his Instagram story with praise for Osimhen, declaring him “WORLDBEST @victorosimhen9.”

Eyakpobeyan started things off with her bullet start, handing over to Godbless who ran a swift back straight. Olajide attacked the curve brilliantly with a slight lead ahead of Liberia as Amusan extended the lead by over 10m to claim the GOLD with a time of 43.01s. Ghana came  second  with the silver in 43.62 while Liberia bagged bronze in 44.38s.

This win cemented Nigeria’s status as the most decorated nation in the event by a huge margin, the closest competitor being Ghana with five titles.

Extra security as Ronaldo’s Portugal face Georgia

All eyes will be on Cristiano Ronaldo in  tomorrow’s Euro 2024 match against Georgia after selfie-hunting pitch invaders in Portugal’s last game raised security concerns and forced UEFA to introduce stricter measures to protect the players.

Portugal’s 3-0 victory over Turkey was marred by at least six fans invading the pitch desperate to get photos with Ronaldo during and after the game in Dortmund on Saturday.

The result secured Portugal qualification for the last 16 as Group F winners while Georgia need a win to reach the knockout stages.

“Safety and security in the stadium, on the pitch and at team facilities are the ultimate priority for UEFA, DFB (German Football Association) and Euro 2024,” UEFA said in a statement. “To this end, additional safety measures will be deployed in the stadiums to further meet the requirements of the tournament, and to prevent such incidents. For reasons of security, we cannot comment further on specific measures.

“Any incursion onto the pitch constitutes a breach of the stadium rules and will result in expulsion from the stadium, a ban from all tournament matches and the filing of a formal criminal complaint for trespass.”

Though the invaders seemed to want just a photo, Portugal coach Robert Martinez expressed fears.

“It’s a concern because today we were lucky that the intentions of the fans were good,” he told reporters. “I think we all love a fan that recognises that big star and the big icons … but you can understand that there is a very, very difficult moment if those intentions are wrong.”

Read Also: Ronaldo ruled out of friendly against Messi’s Inter Miami

It is still unclear if Ronaldo will play on Wednesday as Martinez suggested he would rotate his squad.

However, the five-time Ballon D’Or winner is never keen on taking breaks, especially in major tournaments, as he is obsessed with breaking and extending his records which include most goals, appearances and assists for his country.

At 39, Ronaldo would become the oldest player to score in a European Championship if he nets at Euro 2024.

The Turkish are second on three points while Czech Republic and Georgia are bottom on one.

Willy Sagnol’s Georgia have a mountain to climb against the Portuguese after a heart-breaking defeat by Turkey and a draw with Czech Republic.

One point was arguably a harsh return for a battling Georgia side who hit the post late against Turkey and missed a good chance to beat the Czechs with the last kick of the game.

They still could finish second and qualify if they beat Portugal and the Czechs overcome Turkey, but would be eliminated if they lose or draw and the Czechs avoid defeat.

  • Zaccagni’s equalizer sends Italy to last 16

Zaccagni’s equalizer sends Italy to last 16

Gianluigi Donnarumma saved Luka Modric’s penalty and conceded moments later, but Mattia Zaccagni at the 98th  minute sent Italy into the Round of 16 to break Croatia’s hearts.

They will face Switzerland in Berlin, the side that prevented them from qualifying for the 2022 World Cup.

The Azzurri needed a point to be sure of finishing runners-up behind Spain after a 1-0 defeat, but surprised with a switch to the 3-5-2 formation as Mateo Retegui, Giacomo Raspadori and Matteo Darmian came in, while Federico Dimarco started despite a calf issue. Croatia lost 3-0 to Spain and were held 2-2 by Albania, but kept the veteran midfield trio intact, shifting Josko Gvardiol to left-back, starting Luka Sucic and Atalanta midfielder Mario Pasalic.

Gianluigi Donnarumma flew to palm a Sucic scorcher out of the far top corner, while Gvardiol got a decisive deflection on the Retegui header from Riccardo Calafiori’s cross to turn it inches wide.

Dominik Livakovic needed a great reaction save to deny the Alessandro Bastoni free header on Nicolò Barella’s floated ball to the back post.

Davide Frattesi came on for Lorenzo Pellegrini at half-time, but his immediate impact was to give away a penalty for sticking a hand up to block the Kramaric shot. Luka Modric saw his spot-kick brilliantly parried by Donnarumma, confirming his speciality in these situations.

However, Italy were still celebrating when they immediately gave away a goal, as Donnarumma made the desperate one-handed save on an Ante Budimir header, but Modric was quickest to pounce on the rebound.

Bastoni had another header inches over the bar from a corner and a Raspadori free kick deflected off the wall, while Stanisic did enough to prevent Gianluca Scamacca tapping in the Chiesa ball flashed across the face of goal.

It was practically over when Italy snatched their equaliser, as Calafiori surged forward through the centre and spread it to the left, where Mattia Zaccagni bent a first-time right-foot curler into the far top corner from the edge of the box. It was very similar to the goal Alessandro Del Piero scored in the 2006 World Cup semi-final against Germany.

  • Euro 2024: Dutch eyeing top spot group’s spot ahead of France

Euro 2024: Dutch eyeing top spot group’s spot ahead of France

The Netherlands are hoping to pinch top spot in Group D at Euro 2024 ahead of France but today face a confident Austria side who may need a positive result to reach the last 16.

Dutch coach Ronald Koeman said his side “weren’t up to scratch” in a goalless draw with France last time out which all but secured a place in the knockout phase.

A victory against Austria would wrap up top spot in the group, though, provided France do not win by a bigger margin in their simultaneous final game against Poland.

“If we think about the whole game there were times we weren’t up to scratch,” Koeman said on Sunday. “We lost possession when we shouldn’t have and our pressing wasn’t great either, there was too much space in between the lines.

“France had better chances than we did.”

The Netherlands have finished first in their groups at each of the past two major tournaments, although they were still dumped out by the Czech Republic in the last 16 at Euro 2020.

Despite a promising start to this campaign, there has been debate back home about the make-up of the team.

Memphis Depay, who released a song before the tournament called “Thanks for your opinion” in a thinly-veiled response to critics, struggled up front against France.

There have been calls for Wout Weghorst to be given a start, after he came off the bench to score the winner in the Netherlands’ opening game against Poland.

“When a ball came to me, there was little support. Then you have to hold the ball and unfortunately that didn’t work a number of times. That has to be improved,” Depay admitted after the France stalemate.

Matthijs de Ligt, who impressed in the second half of last season for Bayern Munich, has been left on the bench with Inter Milan’s Stefan de Vrij partnering Virgil van Dijk in central defence.

De Ligt has been speaking to a psychologist to help him process not being in the starting XI.

“These kinds of moments can be tough,” he told Dutch media. “By talking about them you make it lighter and you can put the energy back on the field instead of wasting it on those kinds of thoughts.”

Austria will likely go through with a point as one of the best third-placed teams but could also still finish first with a win, if France fail to beat Poland.

Touted as one of the dark horses for the tournament, Ralf Rangnick’s men impressed in a 3-1 victory over Poland last time out.

They had pushed France close in an opening 1-0 defeat but three points against the Dutch to guarantee a top-two finish would likely help them avoid the strongest teams in the last 16.

“If we calculate we’re still not through, we at least need one more point. You can say with four points it’s quite secure you go into the knockout round,” said Rangnick. “Maybe we can win the group.”

Austria made the knockout stage of a major tournament for the first time since 1954 three years ago, when they gave eventual Euros winners Italy a fright in the last 16 before losing in extra time.

They have never reached the quarter-finals at a European Championship.

“Somehow it is nice to be called that (dark horses),” said Christoph Baumgartner, who scored the crucial goal which put Austria 2-1 ahead against Poland.

“We won against Germany in the build-up, we had a really good period in the last few weeks and months, and then people start to think big quite quickly.

“But we as a team always knew how to assess the situation. We knew against France we weren’t at our maximum. We know if we reach our best level we can beat a lot of nations.”

  • Reflecting on Speaker Abbas’ impactful one year in office

Reflecting on Speaker Abbas’ impactful one year in office

    By Jake Dan-Azumi

It is remarkably easy to underestimate Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen due to his rare humility and self-effacing demeanour. Many of his colleagues and Nigerians observing from the sidelines never imagined him being elected Speaker, let alone succeeding in the role. This concern was further heightened by the historical turbulence that often defines the House of Representatives, attributed to its diverse and relatively young demographic.

Numerous political analysts had voiced worries about the stability of the House, especially with the unprecedented inclusion of eight political parties, marking the highest number since the return to democracy in 1999. However, Abbas Tajudeen has convincingly dispelled these doubts and decisively proved the sceptics wrong. In just a few months, he has assuaged all major fears and transformed the House’s diversity into its greatest strength. The Green Chamber has largely been free of rancour, focused on its agenda, and is a major stabilizing force for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government.

It is increasingly evident that the traits many perceived as weaknesses in Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen are, in fact, his greatest strengths. Beneath his modest exterior lies a deeply intelligent and cerebral leader, an excellent judge of character, and a dedicated servant to legislative work and Nigeria. My first true insight into his keen discernment came when he appointed me Chief of Staff. He based his decision not only on my resume but also on the recommendations of professional colleagues and my performance in a rigorous interview process involving at least four other candidates. Since then, I have consistently witnessed this discernment play a crucial role in his decision-making process and management of the House’s affairs. He is neither rash nor impulsive, nor is he slow and rigid. He always strikes a balance, carefully considering the consequences of his words and actions.

As Chief of Staff to Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, I have had the unique privilege of witnessing first-hand the remarkable journey of a man whose family, educational, and professional background, coupled with his steadfast dedication to Nigeria, has shaped a transformative first year in office as the Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives. This past year has clearly shown how Abbas has imprinted his personality on the House, building bridges across traditional divides and treating everyone, including opponents, as partners in the Nigerian project. He has defined a vision for the House as a people-centred legislature, hence the moniker, the “People’s House”.

Over the past twelve months, Abbas has exemplified effective political leadership by setting the agenda and guiding the leadership towards a clearly defined and collectively agreed-upon vision. He operates not as a ‘boss’ but as a consensus-builder, embracing the principle of being the first among equals. This detailed and personal account, therefore, underscores how Speaker Abbas Tajudeen’s unique combination of academic, royal, and legislative experiences has shaped his leadership style, significantly contributing to the stability and accomplishments of the House in its first session.

Abbas’ academic background is a cornerstone of his leadership style, significantly aiding him in managing issues on the floor and within committees. With a rigorous education that emphasizes meticulous research and analytical thinking, he approaches each decision with detail and scrutiny, ensuring thoroughness and precision. This academic rigour is evident in his methodical examination of legislative proposals and his insistence on evidence-based policymaking. His scholarly discipline has brought a new standard of critical decision-making to the House, fostering an environment where policies are crafted with deep consideration of their potential impact. Moreover, his academic training has equipped him to balance legislative independence and harmonious executive-legislative relations, ensuring that issues affecting Nigerians are addressed passionately and based on facts rather than sentiments.

Coming from a royal lineage, Speaker Abbas embodies the qualities of inclusion and a pluralistic worldview. His royal heritage has instilled a deep respect for diverse perspectives and an innate ability to manage people from varying backgrounds and viewpoints. This inclusive approach has been essential in fostering unity within the House, ensuring that all voices are heard and considered. His exceptional people management skills have enhanced collaboration among Members and promoted a culture of mutual respect and understanding. Unbeknownst to most, Abbas possesses an uncanny sense of humour, which he skillfully uses to disarm even his fiercest opponents, diffuse tension, and navigate difficult situations with remarkable success. His ability to inject humour into challenging discussions helps ease conflicts and foster a more collaborative and congenial atmosphere, enabling him to handle complex issues easily. This humour also balances his moments of anger, which are often short-lived and quickly forgotten, ensuring that he does not hold onto grudges.

After he emerged as Speaker, Abbas deliberately embraced his opponents, ensuring fair treatment for all. Despite some resistance from supposed core loyalists, he consistently argues against victimizing anyone for their political convictions. While rewarding loyalty, he also focuses on building a cohesive House by tapping into the experience and expertise of his opponents, many of whom are ranking Members. By assigning them key positions of responsibility, he has executed a strategic and ethical move that places him on a higher moral pedestal.

Additionally, through several legislative structures, including frequent caucus and committee meetings and executive sessions, Members are encouraged to engage with the House Leadership on critical issues. This approach fosters a collaborative decision-making process where Members actively participate and often determine the outcomes, reinforcing a sense of collective responsibility and unity.

Critically, too, as Speaker, Abbas epitomizes a leadership style that prioritizes accountability and transparency to an exceptional degree. He ensures equity and diligently advocates for the entitlements of his colleagues above his. By consistently communicating progress, challenges, and measures to address issues at every step, he has made his motives clear and above reproach. This relentless commitment to openness and fairness has earned him the confidence and trust of his peers, making his leadership both effective and respected.

The confluence of Speaker Tajudeen’s academic acumen, royal upbringing, and legislative expertise has culminated in a year marked by stability and significant achievements. Under his leadership, the House has successfully passed crucial bills that address pressing national issues. His emphasis on inclusive governance has strengthened the legislative framework, fostering a more cohesive and collaborative legislative environment. The stability he has brought to the House is reflected in the increased confidence and trust of the Nigerian people in the legislature.

Speaker Abbas has successfully earned the trust and confidence of Nigerians despite a long history of distrust and sometimes outright antagonism towards the legislature. His leadership is fostering a growing confidence in both the House as an institution and himself as an individual. This achievement is particularly significant given that many Nigerians view public officeholders with scepticism and distrust. The Speaker has accomplished this by enhancing engagement with civil society groups and development partners, demonstrating a commitment to transparency, accountability, and genuine public service. His efforts continue to bridge the gap between the legislature and the public, fostering a renewed sense of trust and cooperation.

In celebrating Speaker Abbas Tajudeen’s first year in office, it is evident that his unique blend of attributes has not only shaped his approach but has also driven tangible progress. His background has equally reinforced his qualities of fairness, empathy, and a deep commitment to listening to and addressing Members’ concerns with genuine compassion. Known for his contentment, lack of personal ambition and deep trust in Divine Design, Abbas empowers committees and their leadership by granting them operational autonomy and trust. This approach enhances the House’s effectiveness and fosters a collaborative environment where all voices are valued and respected.

As we look forward to the future, there is a renewed sense of optimism and a steadfast belief in the continued positive trajectory of the House under his exemplary leadership. In the coming years, I am confident that Speaker Abbas Tajudeen’s leadership will continue to inspire and stabilize the House of Representatives, serving as a cornerstone of Nigerian democracy. His profound patriotism and unwavering dedication to the Nigerian project are evident in every decision he makes. The Speaker’s inclusive leadership style – marked by fairness, empathy, and a willingness to listen, coupled with his ability to remain focused in the face of significant challenges – will continue to guide the House in a positive direction.

Additionally, his perceptiveness and capacity to envision innovative solutions to problems will be invaluable in collaborating with President Tinubu to address Nigeria’s pressing challenges. Under his leadership, the House of Representatives will continue to grow as a democratic institution that truly represents the hopes and aspirations of the Nigerian people.

Alia: Rekindling hope in good governance

    By Donald Kumun

As the Governor of Benue State, His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, continues his all-important ‘Thank You Tour’ across the length and breadth of the state, a renewed hope on the development of critical infrastructure across the 23 local government areas oàf the State, has been birthed.

It is visibly clear that one of the recurring decimal in his speeches is the vibrant plan on the road infrastructure provision and upgrade as the case may be. Governor Alia has pledged to improve and expand the road networks in the state as part of pioneer efforts to enhance accessibility, connectivity, access to local agricultural production hubs, and bring about an overall development in the state.

The road network and other infrastructure plan related thereto includes the construction of new roads, rehabilitation of existing but dilapidated ones, and towns renewal efforts. The governor whose commitment to nothing but an enduring legacy of selfless services, is intimidating, equally intends to make road network safer, more efficient, and conducive for economic growth and social development.

Furthermore, the road infrastructure upgrade and provision is expected to create job opportunities, stimulate economic activities, and improve the overall quality of life of indigenes of the state.

Worthy of mention are eight major roads earmarked to be constructed in Jechira under administration, in collaboration with the federal government.

The roads are; Adikpo – Kotiyough , Vandeikya- Orkofa , Tyam Junction to Ter Kunav office, linking old post office and Tse Agberagba to Tyough Gbanya road, to Aselagi, respectively. Others are: Atser Kyausu to Tumba shangbom Abena road to Shimin linking Anza street, Branch Atser to Korinya City to Wuese through Tse Agberagba to Gungur linking Awajir.

Similarly, Tor Mkar-Tsue Daka Mbaakpur to Awajir road, Tsar Township Abwa Dagba road, and Anongu Gbagbongon Tse Shande road to Adikpo, are also to be constructed, with proper attention. At every point that the Governor pronounces the construction rural roads as part of his campaign promises to them, a sigh of relief is seeing on the faces of the people, connecting a direct feel of who the people insisted to be their Governor.

Governor Alia who announced the construction of these roads at Vandeikya during the continuation of his ‘Thank You Tour’, to Benue people, urged them, especially those from Jechira, to embrace science education, to enable them meet up with current global trend. He assured them that his administration would continue to prioritize their welfare above every other interests, to make them elicit from him, what the concept of democracy stands for.

During the interaction, the God-sent peoples’ Governor, emphasized that, already his administration has trained ten thousand youths to acquire skills in Information, Communication and Technology (ICT), with the intention to train about sixty thousand more to become useful to themselves, and the society. These efforts aims to stimulate and, actually enhance wealth creation and economic growth.

Accompanied by various key players in the political arena across the state, after carefully listening to their illustrious son (Governor), who rolled out his track records of achievements, and legacy projects either completed, underway or planned, the massively impressed mammoth crowd, numbering about four thousand five hundred members of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), as well as other political Parties, led by Mrs Kukase Garba, defected into the All progressives Congress (APC). They made it abundantly clear that they were joining the APC because of the milestones of the Governor within one year in office.

In Buruku constituency, the Governor met with the enthusiastic traditional rulers of the area led by the Ter- Buruku, Chief Moses Hanior, who appreciated the Governor for his wonderful efforts thus far, acknowledging his timely supply of fertilizer to farmers, and other agricultural policies on ground to boost the impetus of farmers in the State.

Matters of security, unity, peace, regular payment of workers’ salaries, retirees pension, rejuvenation of agriculture (inputs and tractorisation), dredging of River Buruku, construction of Tyogbenda Womboh Jingir UGA Road, and  Tse Addingi Mkorvur Road, were also acknowledged by the traditional Rulers.

For the Sankera axis, Governor Alia disclosed further that he had contacted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to assist the state to construct more road networks in Sankera, adding that the President has graciously approved the construction of the Katsina-Ala Head Bridge-Hausa Quarters/Victory Bible Church Wukari Junction; the Zaki-Biam Yam Market-Iwar Ior-Y Junction roads.

Hon. Paul Biam, the Chief of Staff, hailed the one year scorecard of the Alia administration, which he noted has surpassed those of the past governments in the state.

Mr. Biam hinted that the Alia administration will also touch the stomach infrastructure programme after critical projects might have been attended to, to enable the people have the feel of government, which they massively voted into power.

In Adikpo, the Governor also appreciated the people of Kwande/Ushongo Federal Constituency for their support to him, promising to reciprocate the gesture via the construction of the Adikpo-Mbape-Ada road to link the state to neighbouring Cross River State.

In Gboko/Tarka local governments as well, the Governor announced the construction of Ateku-Ikpenger-Akpagher road, Renovation of the Tiv Traditional Council Chambers, and the Renovation of JS Tarka road, among others.

As Alia continues his ‘Thank You Tour’, showcasing his commitment to improving the road infrastructure, this demonstrates his dedication to fulfilling his promises and delivering tangible benefits to the people of Benue state.

In squarely giving great attention to this hitherto neglected area, the Governor is printing his name in gold in the tablets of the hearts of all well-meaning indigenes of the state. Road construction initiatives in Benue State are crucial for economic development, enhancing connectivity, and reducing transportation costs. This will go a long way in providing the  impetus to framers, to see the need to enhance their commitment to farming as one of the strongest advocacy programs which the Governor himself is passionate about to provide sufficient services that would boost the yields of the people.

Importantly too, improved roads would also facilitate easier access to markets for agricultural produce, boosting local economies and farmers’ incomes. Additionally, better roads improve access to healthcare, education, and other essential services, thereby raising the quality of life for residents. Enhanced infrastructure also attracts investment, stimulates tourism, and promotes regional integration within and beyond Benue State.

These developments collectively drive sustainable growth and development, fostering long-term socio-economic benefits for the state’s population.

The Governor would continue with the ‘Thank You Tour’ today Friday June 21, 2024, with Makurdi/Guma local governments, at the IBB Square, Makurdi, and moved to St. Francis  Primary School Aliade, to meet with the people of Gwer -East, and Gwer-West local governments, respectively.

    The impact of THEMES agenda

As Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu marks his 59th birthday today, Deputy Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU examines the implementation of his THEMES agenda and how it has impacted positively on vital sectors in the Centre of Excellence

T.H.E.M.E.S, an acronym for the Sanwo-Olu administration’s six strategic development agenda, is six years old. It encompasses Traffic Management and Transportation, Health and Environment, Education and Technology, Making Lagos a 21st Century Economy, Entertainment and Tourism, and Security and Governance.

It underscores a vision, a template, a blueprint, a roadmap, a compass. Generally, there is a focus, and backed by principled commitment, it has been bearing fruits, which have led to the widening of the dividends of democracy.

At 59, what Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is celebrating is the continuous fulfilment of these campaign promises, which earned him a second term last year.

Residents attest to the evidence of responsible government; infrastructure battle being fought and won, strides in education and social welfare, including health, flood control, financial autonomy for councils, effective traffic control, support for tourism and a guarantee for ease of doing business.

Sanwo-Olu’s styles have also engendered inclusion and greater participation in government’s implementation strategies. Dynamic, goal oriented, accessible, responsive, humble and loyal to the party and Lagosians, the governor has succeeded in mobilising human and material resources in fuelling the fire of development in the state.

In its tribute to the governor, the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) in the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) said the governor has lived to expectation.

According to the group:“Your leaderdhip has been inspiring, as it offers beautiful lessons on the morality of power, loyalty to the ruling platform, patriotism and essence of good governance.

“The state has benefitted immensely from your numerous people-oriented policies and programmes fundamentally dictated by the needs, aspirations and popular expectations of our people in the last six years.

“The impacts of your fidelity to the implementation of your THEMES agenda are visible across the vital sectors, including education, health, social infrastructure, security and justice system.

“Through your humility, simplicity and candour, you have fostered inclusion, encouraged wider participation in state affairs and presided over an atmosphere of tranquility in the Centre of Excellence.  “The remaining three years will be challenging as more is expected to be accomplished by your administration in our ever growing heterogeneous state, with its multiplicity of aspirations by diverse residents.

“Your antecedents and performance so far convince us that our Lagos is in safe hands.” When Sanwo-Olu was in for a  second term, he hit the ground running. The governor rekindled hope about good governance, saying:”We have not rested on our oars since you the good people of Lagos State gave us the mandate to oversee the affairs of the state for another four years.

“I often like to describe this second term as our season of doubling. We want to move twice as fast as we did in the first term, and accomplish twice as much. Of course, our T.H.E.M.E.S+ development agenda will continue to guide and propel all that we do for the progress and development of Lagos State.”

He added: “As a government, our commitment to the well-being of citizens and growth of our state is resolute and unwavering. We remain dedicated to the successful implementation of pivotal projects”.  Echoing  him, Information and Strategy Commissioner Gbenga Omotoso observed that the philosophy of the Sanwo-Olu is that for democracy to maintain its essence, the active involvement of the people in governance must be encouraged and, indeed, deliberately courted. This is because the citizens are the bedrock of democracy.

He said: “It is in furtherance of this principle that we are promoting our agenda of running an all-inclusive government through the instrumentality of the THEMES Plus Agenda – the six-pillar development plan of the administration.”

In transportation, Sanwo-Olu has been hailed by Lagosians for its strides in the development of traffic infrastructure, following after the historic launch of the first phase of the Blue Line of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit. Work also began on the second phase, which is the extension of the rail line from Mile Two to Okokomaiko.

The governor also launched  the Red Line, running between Oyingbo and Agbado, with stops in between at Iju, Agege, Ikeja, Oshodi, Mushin, and Yaba.

Tendering his stewardship, Sanwo-Olu said: “We have commissioned the Ikeja, Yaba and Oyingbo Flyovers’ component of the Red Line project. These flyovers have been built to significantly reduce the risk of accidents and collisions between trains and vehicles. They will also resolve vehicular congestion and delays along the Red Line corridor, and allow free movement of traffic.

“The Opebi-Mende-Ojota Link Bridge and other arterial roads connecting the bridge will also be ready for commuters this year. Upon completion of the link bridge, major traffic issues along the Opebi-Allen axis will be solved as alternative routes will be available for motorists travelling from Toyin Street, Allen Avenue, Ikeja and Maryland to Ojota enroute Lagos Island. It will also decongest traffic on Kudirat Abiola and Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way.”

The state government has improved traffic management in Lagos.

In fighting the infrastructure battle, employment is generated. Due to the ongoing construction of Opebi-Ojota-Mende bridge, no fewer than 100 Nigerian engineers are gainfully employed. “Students from various universities, and members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) are also on-site, learning practical aspects of their courses, such as Geology and Civil Engineering,” Sanwo-Olu said.

These projects were undertaken to improve connectivity between the communities and make public transportation more seamless and efficient. Plans are underway to roll out electric buses for passenger operations, following the completion of proof of concept on the feasibility of non-combustible engines as substitute for fuel-powered vehicles.

Sanwo-Olu said:” We will take delivery of an additional 100 units of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses from the Federal Government for deployment on defined routes. The goal is to raise the fleet to about 1,000 units before the end of 2024. Rest assured that Lagos is making steady progress in its zero-carbon programme with the objective of becoming an emission-neutral city by 2050.

“Our project financing plan for construction of the Fourth Mainland Bridge is being finalised. When completed, the project will be one of the longest bridges in Africa, providing a much-needed alternative to existing routes while also opening up new parts of the metropolis.

“Plans are also in top gear on the Lekki International Airport, which is expected to take pressure off the Muritala Muhammed International Airport.  It will sit on 5,000 hectares of land in the fastest-growing industrial zone in West Africa today, and is expected to cater to about five million passengers annually, traveling within and outside Nigeria.”

Many road projects have been constructed for ease of movement, some of them with bridges, otherd upgraded from a single lane to a dualised four-lane carriageway in Surulere, Ebute-Meta, Yaba and Oyingbo.

Health is wealth. New hospitals and health centres have been established in a bid to enhance access to healthcare facilities. Not long ago, Sanwo-Olu  joined the Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, who also celebrating his 62nd birthday today, to commission the three-storey, 80-bed General Hospital at Iyun Road in Aralile Community, Surulere.

The hospital was handed over to the state government. It will complement existing healthcare facilities in the state.

Reiterating his determination to defend the health sector, Sanwo-Olu said: “We are building the largest children hospital in West-Africa: Massey Street Hospital, and also a 500-bed Mental Health hospital in Ketu-Ejinrin Epe. Plans are also ongoing to establish a Medical University in collaboration with Federal Ministry of Health.

“The approval process is already underway and being fine-tuned with the National Universities Commission (NUC). The medical institution is anticipated churn out 1,500 personnel yearly to enhance capacity in medical services.”

To the Sanwo-Olu administration, poverty alleviation is a priority.  Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are acknowledged as the backbone the economy and key to job creation. The governor promised to consistently encourage vocational and skills acquisition to alleviate poverty and promote financial sustainability.

He said: “This administration will not hold back investment in these programmes, believing firmly that lifting people out of poverty and setting them on the path to prosperity is the cardinal objective of government.

“A few days ago, beneficiaries of the Micro Enterprise Support Initiative, mainly youths, were empowered at LTV Blue Roof in Agidingbi with various start-off equipment that will aid their trade. Our 18 vocational centres have graduated over 16,000 youths.

“The graduands took vocational training in 19 skill development centres across the five traditional divisions in Lagos. The course fees were borne by the state government. The initiative was targeted at empowering the grassroots, while giving young people an opportunity to discover their innate potential for economic independence.

“The life skills, would, no doubt, help the beneficiaries become self-reliant, just as their entrepreneurial abilities would be enhanced and make them contribute to the economic growth of the state.”

To cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal on Lagosians, the governor said he earmarked N50 billion for social protection in this year’s budget passed by the House of Assembly.

Sanwo-Olu administration has defended tourism and entertainmet industry. He laid the foundation of the Lagos Film City, described by industry players as an ecosystem of creative cinematography, tourism, leisure, entertainment and learning.

The project sited on 100-hectares of land in Ejinrin  in Epe Division is expected to open a vista of economic opportunities to talented youngsters in the culture and entertainment sectors. Also, it will  position Lagos continentally and globally as a destination for filmmakers and producers who want a custom-built location where they can deliver world-class films.

Sanwo-Olu said: “Recent feats of Funke Akindele and her colleagues like Toyin Abraham and Mercy Akhigbe, among others, have shown that with the right environment, our young people have the wherewithal to catalyse artistic activity and economic prosperity in Lagos and Nigeria.

“This massive potential in the creative sector is what underpins the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) deal that we reached with a consortium of entertainment investors, facilitated by Del-York Group, to develop the one-stop campus for learning, film production, post-production, visual effects, and other ancillary services that support the filmmaking process.”

He added: “Ogidi Studios and EbonyLife Cinema deserve special mention, as part of the indigenous entertainment partners working to bring our vision for the film industry to reality. Our eyes are on every sector of the economy. We are determined to seize every opportunity that exists, and leave behind a legacy of transformed infrastructure, social wellbeing, and economic prosperity.”

Security is key. Under Sanwo-Olu,  there is an ambience of peace in Lagos. Today, bank robbery  is a thing of the past, going by the record released by the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF)

As the governor put it, “this feat was achieved through continuous review and fine-tuning of the state’s security architecture.”

Sanwo-Olu thanked the security agencies for their cooperation and dedication.

He added:  “In order to consolidate on our gains in the sector, we recently held the 17th Town Hall Meeting on security organised by the LSSTF, where stakeholders in the security circle, citizens and private sector donors met to evaluate issues relating to safety in Lagos.

“The Security Trust Fund has consistently funded operations of security agencies across communities to ensure quick response to threats and crimes. This year, through the LSSTF, we will provide 300 additional patrol vehicles for our security agencies.”

He added: “In furtherance of our administration’s commitment to the security of lives and property of the people, we recently commissioned the newly-constructed Police Area “M” Command (Phase III & IV), Idimu, Lagos. Our administration pledges to continue to pursue policies and actions that will foster a safe and secure Lagos.”

The governor stressed the obligation of residents. He urged them to obey the law and shun activities likely to lead to chaos and disorder.

He said: “I implore each and every Lagosian to play their part in respecting and obeying the laws of the land. From paying our taxes, to obeying traffic rules, to disposing of our waste responsibly, to speaking up when we see other people breaking the law. These are all attitudes and habits that we must imbibe on this journey to a Greater Lagos.
