‘We don’t owe member who gave us SUVs’

Grace Nation Church has said it does not owe Omolayo Michael, who gifted it two vehicles three years ago and is demanding their return.

In a statement, the church’s lawyer, Ilesanmi Akinwale, noted Michael gave the church two SUVs of his free will during service, but denied the church owed him.

He clarified that the church never solicited nor requested any gifts from Omolayo.

The statement reads: “Sometime in 2021, Omolayo during service gave two cars to the church to express and appreciate God’s faithfulness in his life, family and business and gave the original documents of these vehicles to the church secretariat.

“For close to three years, the vehicles were really never in use and were parked in one spot until the church management decided that rather than allow the vehicles to rot, one of them should be sold and the proceeds remitted to church coffers.

“The management also agreed the second SUV be given as a gift to a member to support and encourage members.

“In March, Michael approached our pastor for N10 million financial assistance, saying his business had not been doing well. Efforts were made to assist him in obtaining a loan from a bank.

“We were shocked when he told the police the church refused to return the SUVs and owes him N50 million for supply of diesel.

“We have been inundated with calls from the media threatening to publish negative reports against the church.

“While we reiterate our commitment to stand by our members in difficult times, we will not allow anyone to damage our reputation and integrity through cheap blackmail, character assassination and extortion…’’

Lekki Farm MD seeks Obasa’s intervention on sealing of property

Wife of a former Ekiti State Information Commissioner and Managing Director/ Founder of Lekki Farms, Mrs Oladunni Otitoju has called for the intervention of Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa following the illegal sealing of Lekki Farms allegedly instigated by the  Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab and a senior advocate.

The said farm, according to her is within a section of the Road/Canal Setback on Maroko-Epe Expressway, Lekki Scheme 1.

In a petition dated June 19, 2024, addressed to Obasa and Chairman, House Committee on Agriculture, Olotu Emmanuel, Otitoju noted on  May 28, Lekki Farms was sealed off despite evidence of compliance submitted to the Ministry.

She said she went to the Ministry of the Environment to inquire of the reasons that led to the sealing of the farm whereupon she was asked to submit all relevant documents, including licence to operate an abattoir, environmental audit report among, others.

Also, Emmanuel  intervened by writing a letter to Wahab to unseal Lekki Farms, adding that the company uses legal documents to operate.

She said despite presenting the documents requested to the Ministry and up to this moment, the Ministry has willfully refused and/or neglected to unseal the farm which has resulted in the death of so many livestock, spoilage of frozen livestock, loss of customer goodwill/patronage  and loss of earnings.

The petition reads in parts: “It is  disheartening to note at this stage that we have not been informed of our wrongdoings that resulted in the infliction of this heavy punishment on us. We supplied all the documents requested showing that we are up to date with all our requirements and documentation.

“We pay our taxes to the government and have positively impacted the people around us. During the Covid 19 Lockdown in 2020, we were consistent in sharing bags of dry beans and Gari to our neighbours – the Mechanics, Bus Drivers, and the Gedegede Villagers just as we gave our support to LASG to give cow meat to Motherless Babies’ Homes in Lekki / Ajah axis.

“We have been in possession of the Land since 2001 without being harassed by anyone claiming adverse title to the said land. We have abided by the terms and conditions of the allocation as well as the Development Permit.

“It is in view of the foregoing that we are constrained to urge you, the Honourable Speaker to use your good offices to compel the Ministry of the Environment to stop forthwith, all forms of Intimidation and Threat of Eviction of our Farm from the said Road Setback pending a thorough investigation of our claims of ownership as well as Punuka Investments Ltd (PIL)’s claim of ownership which is currently before the Lagos State High Court.”

  • Civil societies back banks’ recapitalisation by CBN

Civil societies back banks’ recapitalisation by CBN

The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations yesterday backed the plan by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to recapitalize the commercial banks

It described the move is good for the economy, adding that it would make the banks stronger and attract investors to the country.

The coalition, comprising the Constitutional Rights Advocate Initiative (CRAI), Movement for Nigeria Restructuring (MfNR), Centre for Social and Economic Rights (CSER), Committee for the Protection of People’s Mandates (CPPM), and Cadrell Advocacy Centre, hailed the decision at a press conference in Lagos.

The leader of the coalition, Alesta Wilcox, who is also the past chairman of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Lagos Branch, said banks in Nigeria are now weak, thereby discouraging investors from investing in the country.

He said thd5 recapitalization would make the banks healthy, stonger and recruit more staff.

Wilco said recapitalisation will halt the plot by vested interests benefiting from the weakness  banking sector to sabotage it.

He added: “We are a coalition of civil society organisations. Our role is to act as watchdogs for the government in the interest of the Nigerian people.

“We want to alert the Federal Government, the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Department of State Services (DSS), the Bankers Committee, and the Nigerian media to an organised plot by some vested interest within the Nigerian Banking System to begin to orchestrate a diversionary gas-lighting campaign to stop the proposed banking sector reforms using some faceless civil society organisations who will begin to make preposterous claims and allegations against some Nigerians who are critical to the success of the planned banking recapitalization programme.

“We also have credible intelligence that they intend to make some unsubstantiated allegations against the current CBN Governor, Mr Olayemi Cardoso, and Mr Olawale Edun, the Finance Minister and Coordinating,” Wilcox alleged.

Wilcox the goal of the vested interests is to either delay or force the CBN to drop the ongoing reforms of the banking sector so as to elongate the stay of their Pay Masters at the helm of affairs at some of the sick banks that require the most recapitalization.

Wilcox said recapitalization programmes required a forensic audit of the loan books, stressing that what these vested interests wanted to be unveiled but would rather have the banks left “in their sick state so as to prevent the truth from being unearthed.

He said: “It is germane to say that some of the banks that require recapitalization are the very ones in need of the injection of capital off the back of the recapitalization programme. But these vested interests would rather leave the banks in their sick state so as to prevent the truth from being unearthed.

“Recapitalization programmes, as you well know, require a forensic audit of the loan books. This is what they do not want,” he said.

“In the case of one of the banks, the ages of some of the non-performing loans (NPLs) will shock the Nigerian public. They date back to the 1970s, with interest capitalised running into decades.

“But thankfully, there has been a successful sale of the debt to a company, as it is done the world over. This has received a ‘No Objection’ verdict from AMCON and has been approved by the CBN.

“But the vested interests do not want the fresh injection of capital into the bank. Why? They will lose their ravenous positions to new executives who will be appointed by the investors.

“If indeed they care about the interest of the bank in question, why don’t they want new capital injected to save the bank? It is like the parent of an anaemic child rejecting a blood donation even when the doctors have certified the blood to be clean,” he added.

Reps’ committee urges more budget cash for science, technology complex

House of Representatives’ Committee on Science Engineering has called for more budgetary allocation to aid efficiency of research at Sheda Science and Technology Complex (SHESTCO) in Abuja.

Commitee Chair, Inuwa Garba, who spoke during an oversight visit to SHESTCO yesterday, decried the state of the complex due to lack of proper funding.

Garba, explaining research is the bedrock of development, said Nigeria should not be left behind in science and technology.

The lawmaker noted the organisation is not living up to expectations due to government’s negligence for the facility.

‘’There is a lot of good investment in SHEDA but because of negligence, the organisation isn’t up to standard. This place needs government’s attention.

‘’We have gone round and seen departments in SHEDA but we are not impressed, because as a research institute, the government should make a robust and effective budget to aid efficiency.

‘’We see billions worth of investment here but nothing is happening. Is it because of lack of proper funding or other issues that we will go back and discuss with the other committees to see how we can partner the director general and management of SHEDA to see what the House can do to make this place work.

‘’Looking at the trend globally in science and technology,Nigeria should not be left behind… Without research, there won’t be development and without development there won’t be positive change.

‘’We need to identify the problems, and go back to the House to discuss and engage the ministry representing government.”

Director-General of SHESTCO, Prof Paul Onyenekwe, lamented that the organisation operates with less manpower.

Onyenekwe said they are collaborating with universities to tackle the lack of manpower, and called for more electricity to support equipment in the organisation.

‘’The key request from the committee is electric power, because we have equipment that we switch off and on which isn’t supposed to be because it affects the memory system…

‘’We have less manpower, the complex is only about 320 staff. The numbers that are technicians, researchers and technologists are just about 50 per cent, but what I have done is task the engineers and the technologist so if there is any equipment that is troubleshooting it will enable us know what is wrong.

‘’We are collaborating with universities to tackle lack of manpower, we can use some of their lecturers to design and work and apply for funds. TETFUND, one of the financiers of most university research, SHESTCO cannot source anything from there because it’s not a university but we can collaborate with universities to to get funding from them and we have started’’, he added.

Lagos moves to curb food insecurity at grassroots

Special Adviser to the governor on Rural Development, Nurudeen Agbaje, at an interactive session with heads of Agriculture and Social Services in the 57 local governments, lamented there was food insecurity because few people were into agriculture.
