  • Wizkid, Davido: Best friends or foes?

Wizkid, Davido: Best friends or foes?

It is unsure if the seeming rivalry between Nigerian Afrobeats stars Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun aka Wizkid and David Adedeji Adeleke aka Davido will come to an end anytime soon.

The two music stars have been at it for almost a decade and no one seems to have had a headway in offering truce.

It is largely believed that both Wizkid and Davido are two of the top tier music stars from Nigeria, who have achieved so much for themselves on the global music scene.

Although it’s uncertain what ignited the feud between Wizkid and Davido, the rivalry is as old as Yemi Alade’s first album, ‘King of Queens,’ which is a decade old.

Davido and Wizkid’s are neither friends nor foes and have had a love-hate relationship fuelled by continued competition that has remained tools in the hands of their respective camps and fan bases.

While Davido leads the camp 30BG on social media, Wizkid has behind him and for him, the Wizkid FC. The two camps regularly await a tweet from each of the singers to begin trolling the other camp.

Wizkid and Davido’s feud recently reached what seemed like its peak on April 29, 2024, with both music stars engaging in name-calling on micro-blogging social media platform, X. The actions of both parties evoked mixed feelings with some getting amused and others in dismay.

“It no longer matters how their quarrel started. They are simply badly behaved adults and parents. But clearly, they are both being handled by poor and immature teams. That’s instructive,” Olawale Olaleye, Deputy Editor, This Day Newspaper reacted. “It’s not a function of age. That would be a lame pretext. It’s much they know. Delusional, in fact! It’s, however, disappointing to watch them relish in the folly of their ignorance. Entertainers in the mud.”

According to some industry watchers, it all began on July 28, 2014, when Wizkid tweeted what was perceived to be a shade at Davido after his show his New York and ahead of his London concert. In the tweet, Wizkid wrote, “I already killed NY!! London 26th Sept!! Manchester 28th sept!!! Big surprise!! Still proper shows!! proper venues!!! #fuckboysuckadick!!”

While Davido believed the tweet was directed at him, Wizkid insisted his tweet was about the bad sound system he had experienced at a previous concert. Both singers both opened up on the tweet to Olisa Dibua in two separate interviews in 2016.

In 2017, Davido had taken to Snapchat where he claimed pon pon sound is the popping sound and all other sounds were less in the industry. The post was alleged, by fans and industry watchers, to be shots at Wizkid after he teased fans with his third album ‘Sound From The Other Side’.

On July 5, 2017, it seemed Wizkid got the alleged shade and responded with a tweet taking an alleged swipe at Davido’s voice. “My people make una remember to say Yankee passport no be baba blue, e no dey cure frog voice.”

This went on to become a trend as Davido took it in his stride and even went on to make a frog diamond pendant.

2018 brought about what many considered as the year of relative peace in their public and private relationship as the singers decided to sheath their swords. In an interview with Native Magazine, Davido disclosed that the tension in their respective camps got physical between their fans and they decided to sheath the sword and move on.

To further announce the relative peace, 2018 recorded the first performance of Davido and Wizkid on the same stage together at their respective shows. Wizkid first performed at Davido’s 30 BG concert and subsequently, Davido performed at Wizkid’s Eko Hotel Concert on Dec 24, 2018.

2019 also saw both music stars enjoying a good relationship as Davido acknowledges Wizkid’s congratulatory message after the birth of his son while also congratulating Wizkid for his O2 Arena concert.

The relative peace continued till 2020 when Davido said he unsuccessfully tried to make an album and go on tour with Wizkid in an interview with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu. Davido claimed Wizkid and his team were being evasive and the idea was literally dead on arrival.

Some of Wizkid’s fans alleged the interview was not taken by Wizkid in good stride as he seemed to have deliberately snubbed Davido while responding to other artists, who congratulated him on the feat on X after he posted the completion of his ‘Made In Lagos’ album.

The action further confirmed both singers have resumed hostilities.

It continued in 2021 when Wizkid collaborated with Burna Boy on the song, ‘Ballon d’Or,’ amidst Burna Boy’s feud with Davido. Many in the 30BG camp believed Wizkid took a side and the hostilities resumed in full swing.

However, in 2022, Davido was hit by a tragic blow when he lost his first son, Ifenayi Adeleke. At the time, Wizkid was planning to release his fifth album ‘More Love, Less Ego’ but after the incident the father of four pushed back the release of the album to commiserate with Davido.

The heartwarming gesture suggested to many that all was well again between both artists and this relative peace was further when in January 2023, Wizkid announced a joint tour with Davido – three years after Davido claimed he tried to make it work without success.

On Wednesday, January 18, 2023, Wizkid took to his Instagram page to announce that he would be going on tour with Davido. “After my ‘MLLE (More Love, Less Ego)’ tour!! Davido and I going on tour! save your coins! I no wan hear pim,” he announced.

Few months later, Wizkid posted Davido’s fourth album ‘Timeless’ and shut everyone up to show that they were both on good terms.

In the same year, Davido granted an interview and blamed the fan bases for sparking most of the issues between him and Wizkid.

And to wrap up the year, Davido and Wizkid both partied at an event in Lagos.

Hostilities resumed in 2024 after fans claimed one of Davido’s tweets on his collaboration with Kizz Daniel on X was a snide remark aimed at Wizkid. It took Wizkid three months to dish the same and this time, he trolled Davido with a viral video of him crying.

Interestingly, both music stars have similar taste in luxurious lifestyle. From choice cars to palatial homes and women, Davido and Wizkid seem to share same taste. Despite the two music stars flaunting their partners, Chioma is to Davido what Jada Pollock is to Wizkid, they both have children from other women.

Similarly, Davido and Wizkid are not both not married to the mothers of their first children.

However, they differ in  fun places. Davido prefers hanging out with his team at Cubana night club and few other places when in Nigeria while Quilox is home for Wizkid.

Internationally, both music stars have done well for themselves musically. Winning several notable industry awards and getting nominations at others including Grammys, MOBO awards, BET awards, and others. They have both collaborated with some American music stars including Chris Brown and Akon.

Again, Davido landed a cameo appearance in the sequel to Eddy Murphy’s ‘Coming 2 America’ while Wizkid is yet to get a feature in local or international films.

Outside Nigeria, for fans and support, Davido is to the United States of America what Wizkid is to the United Kingdom.

Nollywood prioritises health, safety with Walk For Life

Last weekend, the leadership of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) led by Dr. Ejezie Emeka Rollas (MON) in collaboration with the Lagos state chapter made good its promise of its health awareness campaign tagged: Nollywood Walk For Life.

Movie practitioners like Rollas, Hon. Desmond Elliot, Ifeoma Okeke, Segun Arinze, Nze C.O.C., Prince Emeka Ani, Ify Eze, Emeka Rising Ibeh, Nora Igbokwe, Ifeoma Okeke, Don Pedro-Aganbi among others walked from the Onikan Stadium, venue of the event, to Falomo on Victoria Island and back where a novelty match took place.

There was also an awareness talk on safety and health matters handled by Dr. Robert Uzu which is in a partnership with AGN.

According to Rollas, the initiative was in reaction to the incessant and deplorable health situations of actors that made the guild declare 2024 Operation Take Care of your Health.

Rollas said: “2023 wasa year we had a series of our members falling dangerously sick with some leading to death. In broad daylight, we lost Don Brymo Uchegbu at a film location in Port Harcourt, we saw Mr. Ibu and Amaechi Muonago pass away as a result of a different health crisis that incapacitated them and confined them in the hospital till we   end of 2023 that we got a shocking news of our former National President Mr. Zack Orji, who collapsed and spent five hours before being attended to since then, has survived two brain surgeries.

“While we were just recovering from all of these, on the 10th of April 2024 we were hit by this tragedy that took the life of Mr. Johnpaul Odowodo aka Junior Pope and four other crew members namely Friday, Precious Abigail and Annointing all of Delta state branch of our guild and other associations in Nollywood. This has just awakened our concern for safety measures to guard against future occurrences. We have engaged with the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity with serious discussions on Federal Government partnership for safety of Actors during work.

“We also set a committee under the leadership of a veteran Actor Mr. Emeka Ike on Guild Ethics, Safety. There are many others who have one underlying ailment or the other that have no means of receiving proper health care.”

Making his input, the Lagos State chapter chairman said: “People say health is wealth,  life  and money. Most times because of our profession, we hardly have time to exercise our body. Most times in certain cases, you hear one actor has slumped. You could reason with me from the last incident that happened with Zack Orji. So, we deemed it necessary to introduce this Nollywood health campaign. In my own capacity as chairman, I have to gather members to key into this process. If we continue with this, it will help us in no small measure.”

  • Focus on local governance, not federal dependence, Tinubu tells States

Focus on local governance, not federal dependence, Tinubu tells States

President Bola Tinubu has lamented the neglect of the local government areas, appealing to State Governments to prioritise the needs of local communities by ensuring accountability and effectiveness in the administration of council areas.

A statement by Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, said President Tinubu spoke at a meeting with the leadership of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The President, who noted the seeming lack of attention for the grassroots where he observed votes come from, charged his guests to reach out to governors on the local governments’ administration in the country, to be sympathetic and urgently attend to the needs of the local people.

“We are running a constitutional democracy. I will appeal to you to summon the Governors. I am doing my very best to enhance the revenue base of the country. They must equally be sympathetic and they must urgently consider the needs of the local people.

“People reside in the local communities. That is where they work, farm and live. If the local governments are not effective in delivering services; as leaders, we must not hang on to the numbers. We have 774 local government areas, but are they truly effective? Do they solve problems for Nigerians? Do they coordinate development programming with the state and federal governments?

“Who is being held accountable for the performance of the 774 local governments? Maybe we should look at recalibrating. What was good four years ago may not be good today. When we want the votes, we go to the locals; when we get the votes, we move to and focus on Abuja,” the President said.

Highlighting the significance of education in nation building, the President described the situation of out-of-school children in parts of Nigeria as unacceptable.

“The question of out-of-school children is unacceptable. Education is a tool against poverty, and that is what brought many of us here. We must use our education to serve the people and improve their conditions. We must develop the backbone of Nigeria’s economy, which is the education system. We will collaborate with you on this intensively.

“We are still building Nigeria, and I am glad that you have emphasized the need for development. The infrastructure decay is unacceptable, and the level of poverty in the north is unacceptable. We must eliminate the source of these trends,” President Tinubu stated.

On security, President Tinubu commended the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, for his efforts, saying: “Everybody wants to be secure, and we need to invest more in technology. We will do it, I promise you. We will put our heart and soul into ensuring that Nigeria is secure and its citizens are protected.

“The AKK project, the dredging of the River Niger, and improving port access and infrastructure nationwide, in order to shorten travel time, will make us more prosperous as a nation. We have to fight insecurity so that people can make a decent living anywhere they live.”

The President also addressed economic development and livestock management, stating: “Animal husbandry has been a huge problem for Nigeria. Dairy farms can grow our economy significantly.

“Talk to the Governors and tell them to make more land available. Talk to herders to collaborate with the states. The lands are with the states. We are ready to put funds in place to help the herders. We can do it, and we will be able to do it. If the Brazilians and the Dutch are doing it, we can also do it,” the President stated.

Tinubu also appealed for national unity and continued support for his government as it solves decades-long challenges confronting the populace.

Emir Sanusi called on the new ward Head to ensure peaceful coexistence among the subjects of the area and contribute his quota towards the development of the state as a whole.

  • Sit-at-home not in South East’s interest, says Deputy Speaker Kalu

Sit-at-home not in South East’s interest, says Deputy Speaker Kalu

Deputy Speaker Hon. Benjamin Kalu has sued for peace between residents of Aba, Abia state and the military following Thursday’s attack on a military check point in the town which left soldiers dead.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, Kalu condemned the attack on the check point by yet-to-be identified assailants.

He said the killing of the military personnel who were doing their lawful duty was unwarranted, outrageous, unjust, cruel and absolutely condemnable.

Kalu, who represents Bende Federal Constituency of Abia State, said that Aba people better known for their enterprising spirit and technical skills cannot be hoodwinked to think that locking up their shops and closing their businesses to stay at home was in their best interest.

While reminding the people that Aba is the commercial nerve centre of the South East and as such plays host to people from all walks of life, Kalu also urged them not to trade their known hospitality with violence, saying that it is alien to the culture of  Ndi Igbo.

He said that while efforts were ongoing to quell the rising wave of insecurity and restore peace in the whole of the South East region through a non kinetic approach championed by Peace In South East (PISE-P), it was unnecessary to engage in acts capable of truncating the gains already made.

The Deputy Speaker appealed to the people to support the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu which has vested unusual interest in the development of the South East, saying that doing otherwise will affect the fortunes of the region.
