Fiorentina, Olympiacos set for Conference League finale

Fiorentina will be hoping to avoid consecutive Europa Conference League final losses when they take on Olympiacos at the AEK Arena tonight in a match set to broadcast live on GOtv.

Lucas Beltrán’s late equaliser against Club Brugge in the semi-final secured 1-1 draw for the Italians as they advanced to the final on 4-3 aggregate score, having won the first leg 3-2 at home. Fiorentina will hope to add a second European trophy to its cabinet on Wednesday. Tune in GO Football (ch 61) at 8pm to watch the match.

Speaking with UEFA ahead of the final, Vincezo Italiano, Fiorentina’s manager, expressed delight at his team’s consecutive final appearance in a European competition and hopes the team makes up for last year’s disappointment.

“I hope our efforts, our hard work, and all the detailed attention we have given to this competition will bring us the cherry on the cake,” he said.

Olympiacos, on the other hand, will relish the thrill of winning their first ever European final appearance on home soil. José Luis Mendilibar, the man who led Sevilla to Europa League success last season, oversaw a  6-2 aggregate victory over Unai Emery’s Aston Villa in the semi-final to advance to the final.

“We must keep a level head, treat it like any other game. The week leading up to the game will be as normal as possible. I never like to do anything differently just because it’s a big game,” Menilibar told UEFA ahead of the final. “Olympiacos have that hunger to win, and if the youngsters (Olympiacos’ UEFA Youth League winners) can do it, why can’t we? We were underdogs against Ferencváros, Fenerbahçe and especially Aston Villa, and we found a way.”

Remo Stars won’t give up on title race, says Ogunmodede

Head coach, Remo Stars, Daniel Ogunmodede has revealed  that the Sky Blue Stars would not be deterred by their defeat to Kwara United in Ilorin last weekend.

The Sky Blue Boys suffered a 3-2 defeat to Kwara United in the matchday 33 tie of the league played in Ilorin which has caused a setback to the club’s ambition to win the league title.

Reacting to the loss, Ogunmodede said his boys would learn from their mistakes and be better prepared for their next league game this weekend.

“We will not give up. We will keep fighting to the end. We knew it wouldn’t be easy, but we’ll learn from our mistakes and come back stronger,” he said after the game.

“The only disappointment is that we were unable to get the maximum three points. We planned for the win, but unfortunately, we couldn’t get our desired results.

” That is the only disappointment. I understand there is no excuse for failure; if not, I would have been talking about the abrupt break we had for a month, so you expect a team to come back and give it their best—it’s impossible.

“But nevertheless, it was a good fight. Kwara United took advantage of their early goal; you know this is a team who had the luck of playing about two matches during the holidays, which tells of their match fitness, and the early goal gave them a lot of confidence. We were struggling; they took advantage again and scored their second goal before the whistle sounded for the second half.”

  • UCL Final Countdown:  Coach tips Dortmund  to  halt Real’s  dominance

UCL Final Countdown:  Coach tips Dortmund  to  halt Real’s  dominance

Borussia Dortmund can break Real Madrid‘s winning run in Champions League finals when they meet in the showcase in Wembley on Saturday, coach Edin Terzic has   said.

Real have won all eight finals they have contested since the Champions League replaced the European Cup in 1992.

They have also won five Champions League titles in the past 10 seasons for a total of 14 European crowns.

Terzic said records were there to be broken, but Dortmund would need to perform at the highest level.

“We have to have the belief that we can achieve big things,” Terzic told a press conference. “We have to invest everything to bring the trophy back to Dortmund. It has been a long time.”

Dortmund won the title in 1997 and reached the final again in 2013, losing to Bayern Munich in an all-German showdown.

“The most important thing is if you want to win the Champions League you have to beat the champions,” the coach said. “We now face the absolute champions.”

“They have had this experience 14 times, won it five times in the past 10 years. But our aim is always to break it down to one game.”

“Eight Champions League finals and they never lost. But what matters is not what happened in the previous eight. What matters is only the next one. It is time to break that run.”

Dortmund finished fifth in the Bundesliga this season, narrowly securing their Champions League spot for next season. They had been title contenders after missing out on the league trophy on the final matchday in 2023.

Terzic said that bitter experience a year ago, however, contributed to their success this season.

“I had said it at the time that I would have done without this chapter of my life, but this day was from that point part of our road to success,” he said.

“Now we travel to London with the same fans who a year ago after that bitter match (on the final Bundesliga matchday) kept supporting us and singing for hours. It is time to give something back, and we will have the chance to hopefully celebrate together.”

  • Eto’o, Indomitable Lions coach caught  in angry exchange

Eto’o, Indomitable Lions coach caught  in angry exchange

Cameroon football  has plunged deeper into crisis after a meeting between football federation president Samuel Eto’o and the country’s new Belgian coach Marc Brys turned into an angry showdown.

It was the first time Eto’o was meeting Brys, who was appointed by the country’s sports ministry in early April without any input from the Cameroon Football Federation, setting up a standoff between the two.

Brys had been invited for a “working session” by Eto’o as Cameroon prepare for World Cup qualifiers next month, but several of his support staff, also appointed by the sports ministry, were refused entry to the FECAFOOT federation building in Yaounde.

Video circulating on several social media sites (@AllezLesLions), filmed by reporters, show Eto’o welcoming Brys but their exchanges quickly turned into a melodrama.

First Eto’o angrily kicked out a ministry official who wanted to attend the meeting, and then he had a fiery exchange with Brys, who left immediately.

A statement is expected later from FECAFOOT, who had expressed a willingness to work with the Belgian despite initially slamming his appointment as a unilateral decision by sports minister Narcisse Mouelle Kombito.

Normally, the football federation would appoint and pay its coaches but in some African countries this is done by the government, especially when federations are cash-strapped.

Former African Footballer of the Year Eto’o, who had a storied career playing in Europe, has tried to assert some independence but has also had to tread carefully in a country where matters around the football team are high priority for the government.

Long-standing Cameroon president Paul Biya has often weighed in on team affairs, famously demanding that 38-year-old Roger Milla be included in the squad for the 1990 World Cup.

The veteran striker went on to score key goals as Cameroon became the first African country to reach the quarter-finals.

Cameroon have qualified for eight World Cup tournaments, more than any other African country, making the Indomitable Lions one of the country’s major assets.

They are due to play the Cape Verde Islands in Yaounde on June 8 and Angola away three days later in their latest qualifying games for the 2026 finals in North America.

  • Senegal ex-rifleman to carry Paris 2024 Olympic torch

Senegal ex-rifleman to carry Paris 2024 Olympic torch

At over 90 years old, former Senegalese rifleman Oumar Dieme considers it something of a miracle that he will be carrying the Olympic torch as part of the opening of this summer’s Paris Games.

In the shade of mango and silk-cotton trees, he recounts his time in the “Senegalese tirailleurs” – a corps of African infantrymen who fought for France during the two world wars and various decolonization struggles.

Dieme’s medal-adorned traditional boubou speaks of his service in former French Indochina and later Algeria, as he recalls those who never returned to their homeland.

“Many colleagues stayed behind. Others came back mutilated (or) are no more,” he said, his blue cap pinned with a sergeant’s rank.

Dieme explained that some 20 men from his village of Badiana in the southern Casamance region served in the Senegalese Tirailleurs corps until it was disbanded in the 1960s.

He added that he was one of the “lucky” ones.

“I’m the only survivor. It was a miracle that I was chosen,” he recounted, surrounded by family members and crumbling buildings.

Dieme has been selected as one of the torchbearers to carry the Olympic torch as it passes through the Parisian department of Seine-Saint-Denis for the opening of the Games at the end of July.

Organisers accepted the bid from the department, where Dieme lived before his return to Senegal in 2023.

“The choice of Oumar Dieme contributes to the essential work of remembrance, because the Senegalese riflemen have been forgotten for too long in our collective memory,” Stephane Troussel, president of the Seine-Saint-Denis department, told AFP.

Dieme had never heard of the Olympic flame before, but agreed anyway.

“Given my age, I would like to be accompanied by my son,” he said.

Dieme is one of thousands of soldiers born in the former French colonies in Africa to have fought in the Senegalese Tirailleurs corps, created in 1857.

He enlisted on March 6, 1953, after leaving neighbouring The Gambia where his father, an imam, had sent him to study the Koran.

Recruiters gave Dieme the birth date of 31 December, 1932, making him 20 at the time, but he thinks he is at least two years older.

He volunteered to go to Indochina, where US-backed colonial ruler France was fighting the Chinese-backed Viet Minh independence movement.

He had seen “people come back with medals and decorations, I liked that,” he said.

Dieme recounted how he saw 22 men from his company fall in an ambush, and how the encirclement of Dien Bien Phu had prevented him and his colleagues from getting there before the decisive defeat of the French Union troops in 1954.

After returning to his home country, Dieme left again in 1959, this time headed for the Algerian War.

It was here that he first learned of Senegal’s own independence from France in 1960.

Dieme was repatriated and re-enlisted in the Senegalese army, before retiring at 36 and working as a security guard at the University of Dakar and as a bank courier until 1988.

Dieme later settled in Bondy, northeastern Paris, where he and other former riflemen faced another battle, this time with the French state.

He eventually obtained French nationality, and in 2023 the government allowed the remaining tirailleurs to continue receiving the minimum pension without having to spend half the year in France.

Dieme later returned to Senegal, where he splits his time between his village and the capital Dakar, where one of his two wives and the mother of many of his children lives.

Oumar Dieme is delighted to be with his family in Senegal where everyone loves him

“I’m very happy to be with my family. (In France) I was confined to a 17 square metre room. I didn’t see anyone. In this village, everyone loves me,” he said with a wide grin.

Dieme’s opportunity to carry the Olympic torch is testament to the efforts of Aissata Seck, a local councillor in Bondy and president of a group commemorating the tirailleurs.

“It’s a beautiful symbol, even more so today with the extremely difficult current situation and the trivialization of racism on social media. It shows the richness and diversity of France,” she said.

  • Premier Records recreates Uwaifo’s ‘Joromi’ with AI artiste, Mya Blue

Premier Records recreates Uwaifo’s ‘Joromi’ with AI artiste, Mya Blue

The late legendary Sir Victor Uwaifo’s former record label, Premier Records Limited, has just released a modern version of one of his hit songs, Joromi.

The new song and remix features Nigeria’s first AI artiste Mya Blue.

The song is a fusion of the original melody, afrobeats and amapiano with the use of modern technology.

According to Eclipse Nkasi, the creator of Mya Blue, it is a project that brought about a lot of creativity and innovation.

“We did not just want to create an AI influenced like our first project, we wanted this to be original in all ways. So, we took our time to create something unique. As a producer, this is one of the most challenging projects I have done. The ability to maintain the original sound and have the legendary Sir Victor Uwaifo’s voice on it was the most exciting part. Truly, it is an amazing piece and I am happy we worked with a legacy record label like Premier Records Limited to pull this off.”

Mr. Michael Odiong, CEO of Premier Records Limited, said Premier Records Limited embraced the project because AI is the future.

“Music is innovation, we must always be open to innovations. Some might be bad, some good, but they all make their impact if well used. We have survived for over 60 years because we are open to new innovations. This is one of them. We believe that our legends never die. They might not be physically present, but their voices continually live on forever. As a label, it is our duty to keep the voice of our artists going using new and innovative ways. AI is here with us now, we must take advantage of it legally otherwise the world will pass Africa by and recreate our music without our consent”.
