NGO ramps up support for displaced community in Nigeria

An NGO, Amede.org, has reaffirmed its commitment to the Madonna Mercy Village in Ogbaru, Anambra State.

This partnership, which began in 2020, was initiated by Honorable Arinze Awogu, the former chairman of Ogbaru, who introduced Amede.org’s president to the village.

Madonna Mercy Village, managed by Rev. Fr. Dr. Collins Ifeanyi Ojene, is a sanctuary for the mentally challenged, abandoned elderly, the hungry, sick, and other marginalized individuals.

Fr. Ojene’s unwavering dedication to his community has inspired Amede.org to provide monthly support since the partnership’s inception.

The village faced a significant setback during the devastating floods of 2022. The disaster resulted in the loss of crops and livestock, the destruction of several buildings, and severe damage to the hostel, putting many lives at risk.

In response, Amede.org, recently registered as an NGO in the United States, has intensified its efforts to support Madonna Mercy Village. The organization’s mission now includes raising awareness and funds to aid the displaced community. Their expanded support encompasses women’s empowerment, access to clean water, early childhood development, and additional critical services.

In the first week of the month, Amede responded to an urgent plea for help from Madonna Mercy Village. Beyond their regular monthly contributions, they delivered essential supplies including fans, robes, bedding, toiletries, bags of Garri, rice, and cartons of noodles. Amede.org pledges to continue providing these vital items periodically.

The NGO has also launched a global campaign to highlight the plight of abandoned elderly individuals in Nigeria. They are actively negotiating with schools to enhance educational resources for underprivileged students and are exploring financial support options for women seeking to improve their businesses and family lives.

Amede.org’s ongoing mission is to find donors and volunteers dedicated to making incremental commitments towards creating a better world. Their steadfast support for Madonna Mercy Village is a testament to their dedication to humanitarian causes.

The Bayelsa state-born Amgbare spoke when he assumed office at the Authority’s headquarters in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, where he was warmly received by ranking officials and staff of the Authority after attending a well-attended Thanksgiving Service at the Royal House of Grace Church in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital.

He said he was very proud to associate with the Renewed Hope Agenda and indicated that he was also the representative of President Tinubu in the agency.

He said President Tinubu meant well for the people of the region and urged the people of the Niger Delta to support the President to succeed in his mission to salvage the country.

Amgbare assured the management team of the agency of his passion to partner with them and provide what they need to succeed as civil servants.

  • No casualty as Abuja-Kaduna train derails

No casualty as Abuja-Kaduna train derails

A train en route to Abuja from Kaduna derailed at Jere in Kaduna state in the early hours of Sunday, May 26.

The train with an unidentified number of passengers derailed halfway into the journey which commenced around 8:05 am.

An official of the service who was on the ground to ascertain the cause of the derailment said it may not be unconnected to the vandalization of the rail tracks.

He said no fewer than three coaches were affected by the derailment.

He said personnel from the various security agencies and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) have been deployed to the site of the incident.

He also allayed fears that there would be a suspension of train services along the route as a result of the derailment.

He said the operation of the corporation was only delayed for a few hours due to the accident.

The official of the Abuja-Kaduna Train Services (AKTS) who pleaded anonymity said: “We are thankful that the incident did not lead to any casualty.

“The coaches derailed in one of our stations where we have two lines. So, what we simply did was to detach the three coaches that were affected and move other coaches to the line that was not affected.

“We also evacuated all the passengers into the coaches that were not affected and at 10 am when we were on our way from Idu station to ascertain the situation of things in Jere (Kaduna state), our train crossed them at Kubwa station. So, all passengers were safely evacuated and they have also arrived at their destination in Abuja without any casualty.”

He also said some of the staff were currently checking the coaches affected to ascertain the level of damage and also make sure items that were probably forgotten by passengers were kept safe.

On what may be the cause of the derailment and whether train services would be suspended, he said: “As much as we cannot totally attribute the cause of the derailment to vandalization, I still think that it is one of the causes of it.

“There is no need for the service to be suspended because our engineers are already on ground the to fix the problem. The derailment did not affect our services so much, we only experienced a few hours of delay because our workers needed to check the site to make sure it was safe for other operations of the day.

“So, right now as I speak with you, passengers are currently boarding from Kaduna for Abuja. So, everything is fine.”

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) while confirming the incident, stated that normal services continue despite derailment.

The corporation in a statement by its deputy director of public relations, Yakub Mahmood stated:

“The management of the NRC hereby informs the general public especially our valued passengers that normal passenger train services between Kaduna-Rigasa, and Idu-Abuja continue despite the minor derailment of our coach at Jere station this morning.

“All the passengers on board the Kaduna-Rigasa to Idu Abuja arrived at their respective destinations safely.

‘Meanwhile, a team of NRC engineers are already at the site to restore the affected location.”

The NRC management while stating that it regrets any inconveniences, assured passengers of its efforts towards ensuring their safety and comfort always.

The management of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), also said it has deployed a team to the site of the incident.

It stated: “NSIB is aware of the derailment of an Abuja bound train from Kaduna which occurred halfway into the journey at Jere. A go team has been deployed to the site of the incident.”

  • Tinubu inaugurates 25.735 km Ogbia-Nembe road in Bayelsa

Tinubu inaugurates 25.735 km Ogbia-Nembe road in Bayelsa

…Diri calls for more collaboration on landmark projects

As part of the activities to mark the first anniversary of his administration in office, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has inaugurated the 25.735 km Ogbia-Nembe road with seven bridges connecting 14 communities in Ogbia and Nembe local government areas of Bayelsa State.

The project was conceived and completed by the Federal Government through the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in collaboration with the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) and joint ventures as well as the Bayelsa state government which donated N3bn when the project was allegedly stalled for six years.

The inauguration was a great milestone and a big relief for the benefitting communities in the state that had been waiting for the completion of the road that was first initiated in 1940 but work commenced in 2005 during former President Olusegun Obasanjo administration when the then Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Chief Ndutimi Alaibe, initiated it.

The benefitting communities include Ogbia, Emakalakala, Akipelai, Etiama, Nembe Bassambiri and Ogbolomabiri, among others.

The president, represented by the Minister of Niger Delta Development, Abubakar Momoh, at the opening, expressed regret for being unable to attend due to international engagements.

Stressing the significance of the project, Tinubu stated: “This important road will alleviate many issues and hardships in the region by facilitating the free movement of goods and services. This is a project everyone would want to be associated with.

“The NDDC deserves a lot of commendation for this accomplishment. This demonstrates Mr. President’s commitment through the release of funds for the timely completion of the project.

“This project is a clear example of what good partnerships can achieve. I call on other international oil companies (IOCs) to follow suit. Chevron, for instance, has undertaken similar projects in the region, and I urge them to complement the NDDC’s efforts so that we can witness more success stories like this.”

He also acknowledged the role of the National Assembly in the project, noting that “for the NDDC to initiate this project in partnership with Shell, the National Assembly must be commended for their support.”

Regarding the call by Alaibe for the Federal Government to remove the NDDC from the single treasury account, the President said the government had moved beyond that because the Presidency had directed the NDDC to capture all legacy projects in the nine states of the region.

He said in the 2024 budget, a special arrangement would be put in place to execute the region’s projects.

He thanked Shell for partnering with the NDDC, stressing that the huge project which gulped over N30bn would have been difficult for any single entity to achieve alone.

“I encourage the IOCs and the governors of the nine states to collaborate with the NDDC to accomplish more. It is my honour and privilege to open this project,” Tinubu said.

In his opening remarks, the Managing Director of the NDDC, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, described the completion of the project as a significant milestone, particularly for the Ogbia and Nembe people.

He called on all stakeholders to cooperate with the Commission in its efforts to develop the Niger Delta region.

Also, the Chairman of the NDDC Governing Board, Mr. Ehiedu Ebie, remarked, “It was a great day for Niger Deltans.

“This impactful project underscores the potential for collaboration with SPDC and other IOCs such as Shell.

He also stressed the importance of continuity, noting that the project began during the tenure of Timi Alaibe as the MD/CEO of the commission.

“As a board, we strengthened the public-private partnership department, and our efforts are coming to light,” Ebie stated

Also speaking, Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri described as unfair, deliberate efforts being made in some quarters to undermine the significant contributions of the state government towards the completion of the 25.7km road project.

Diri, represented by his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, stressed that no story about the project would be complete without a mention of the role the state government played.

He pointed out that it was necessary to correct the wrong impression that the state government did not contribute to the execution of the road project.

According to him, the Bayelsa State Government under former Governor Seriake Dickson disbursed N3 billion to the contractor, Setraco, in 2013 to restart the NDDC/Shell joint venture project after it was stalled for about six years due to funding challenges.

Diri, however, commended the NDDC, SPDC and their development partners for delivering on the project to open up the state.

He called on the NDDC, Shell and other well-meaning corporate giants to collaborate with his administration in completing the ongoing Akaba-Okodi Road, Nembe-Brass Road, Ekeremor-Agge Road, and the Opume-Okoroba Road among others.

Top-ranking senators, led by Senate Committee Chairman on Niger Delta, Senator Ekpenyong Asuquo, stressed the need for continuity in administration, citing Lagos State as an example of sustained development initiated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“If the NDDC continues from where they left off, they will lead the region and align with the 10th Senate. As you continue in the spirit of continuity, you will rise in the annals of time. I urge the IOCs to continue partnering with the NDDC to develop the region,” Senator Asuquo said.

Emirship tussle: Ribadu’s lawyer writes Kano deputy governor

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and lawyer to the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, M.J. Numa, has asked the deputy governor of Kano state, Aminu Abdussalam, to provide “irrefutable evidence to substantiate his claim, within 24 hours, that he (Ribadu) provided the aircraft that conveyed the dethroned Emir, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, back to Kano, and “the intent is to kill and destroy properties because they are not from Kano.”

The deputy governor had, in a brief interview at the Emir’s Palace in Gidan Rumfa, accused the NSA of assisting the deposed Emir to return to the ancient city last week Sunday.

Numa in a letter dated 27th May 2024, and obtained by The Nation, asked the deputy governor to retract the “libellous allegation in a similar manner it was made, give it wide media circulation, and issue a public apology in five national dailies with wide national coverage and on popular online platforms.”

He said failure to comply with demands would compel his client to seek legal redress before the appropriate forum.

Read Also: Yahaya Bello vs EFCC: Northern groups visit Lamido of Adamawa, Zulum, seek Tinubu’s intervention

The letter read in part: “The attention of our client was drawn to a video clip being shared on different social media platforms wherein you granted an interview at Emir’s Palace in Kano on Saturday, the 25th day of May 2024, in a very calm atmosphere, and without any provocation whatsoever, falsely accusing our client of using his office to kill the people of Kano State and maim their properties.

“In the clip, you were shown to be saying in Hausa (translated): “The former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, is not happy with the peace and understanding being enjoyed in Kano and is using the office of the National Security Adviser to deploy security personnel to subvert the will of Kano people and to bring something the people don’t like.

“The National Security Adviser has provided two planes to bring the former Emir to Kano. What we failed to understand is the reason behind his actions. The intent is to kill and destroy properties because they are not from Kano?”

“Your false accusations against our client portraying his office as an appendage of a political party and a willing tool to cause chaos in Kano is false and done with the intention of damaging the hard-earned reputation of our client in the eyes of the right-thinking members of the society and indeed it has succeeded in doing so.

“For the avoidance of doubt, our client is not in any way using his office for any political purpose. Our client was also not responsible for providing the plane that brought His Highness, Emir Aminu Ado Bayero to Kano.

“You have without any justification ridiculed the exalted office of the National Security Adviser, which our client occupies, by portraying it as a ready tool to be used by politicians to achieve political goals. You have also ridiculed the personality of our client who has built a reputation as a principled and honest citizen in both his public and private life.”

Numa said Ribadu who was the pioneer Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), had, in all the places he has served never been accused of any wrongdoing.

“Given this illustrious background, it is inconceivable that someone would harbour the thought that our client would descend his exalted office so low as to interfere in the local tussle of the Kano Emirate,” he said.

“Our client and his office take your allegations seriously and by this letter, our client is demanding that you provide irrefutable evidence to substantiate your claims. If you have no proof, our client demands you to within 24 hours: retract the libellous allegation in a similar manner you made it as well as give it wide media circulation; and issue a public apology in five National dailies with wide national coverage and on popular online platforms.

“Kindly be advised that your failure to comply with this modest demand will compel our client to seek legal redress before the appropriate forum, irrespective of the immunity status you currently enjoy by virtue of your position as the Deputy Governor of Kano state.”

Kano Emirate crisis: Count Tinubu out, says DOJ leader tells politicians

The 2023 national coordinator of the supporters group for the Bola Tinubu presidential race under the auspices of Disciples of Jagaban (DOJ), Comrade Abdulhakeem Alawuje, has called on politicians to stop dragging President Bola Tinubu into the Kano Emirate crisis.

Alawuje, in a statement on Sunday, May 26, noted that some politicians have seized the opportunity of the royal rumble in Kano to destructively criticise President Tinubu’s administration as if he is behind the tussle.

The DOJ leader urged such a group of politicians to publicly apologise to President Tinubu for “dragging his administration into where it has nothing to do with the situation of traditional crisis.”

He noted that statements credited to reinstalled Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi who hailed Tinubu’s policies were the direct opposite of what Atiku Abubakar said about the involvement of the federal government in the Kano State emirate crisis.

According to Alawuje, “At this critical period of emirate crisis in Kano, politicians should desist from statements that would further plunge the ancient city into more turmoil surreptitiously to score political points.

Read Also: Yahaya Bello vs EFCC: Northern groups visit Lamido of Adamawa, Zulum, seek Tinubu’s intervention

“If anything, the statements credited to Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi were the direct opposite of what Alhaji Atiku Abubakar said about the involvement of the federal government in Kano state emirate. That has further portrayed Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as a mere political wailer in Nigerian politics.

“Trying to link Tinubu administration to what is happening in Kano is unfair to Mr President. It is a social and ideological injustice against the entire good citizens of this country. Those who changed everything to political parades including the places of worship are not sincere in contributing to the unity and progress of our dear country. And therefore they should apologise to President Tinubu who has no hand in the Kano Emirate crisis

“I salute the courage and the coming out of the newly installed Emir of Kano, for saving a lot of things, and also exposing some politicians of all their previous framed and knocked allegation against Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu both in the past and present.

“With my life experience and the level of exposure, I have gone beyond being sentimental in thinking and politicking, I can proudly say that in the history of Nigeria politics, there’s no one dead or alive that has natural and undiluted sincere foot soldiers like Tinubu 2023 agenda and I am assuring Nigerians that the struggle of 2023 will be a child play in 2027 programme.

“This is wholly because Tinubu remains the most courageous and staunch politician in Nigeria. He is a politician of note who is naturally supported by Almighty God.”

  • Birthday: Ekiti governor, Imoukhoude, Faboro, others eulogise Prophet Olu Alo

Birthday: Ekiti governor, Imoukhoude, Faboro, others eulogise Prophet Olu Alo

Ekiti state governor, Abiodun Oyebamiji, former senior special adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari, Hon. Afolabi Imorkuhade, and the Olojudo of Ido Faboro-Ekiti, Oba Ayorinde Ilori Faboro, were among the dignitaries who praised Prophet Sam Olu-Alo, the founder of Grace of Mercy Prayer Mountain Worldwide, on his birthday.

Other notable attendees included the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Ekiti, Dayo Apata (SAN); the Regional Superintendent of CAC Essien Region and Benin Republic, Pastor Isaac Eyebiokin; the Planter of CAC, the Boanerges, Prophet Ade Ologbonyo; and the Chairman of Ido Town Development Council, Hon. Sola Ogunsina.

Prophet Alo, who is also the founder of Adamimogo Communications Limited, celebrated his birthday on Saturday by launching a maternity home and a new radio station, Adamimogo 107.7FM, in his hometown of Ido Faboro Ekiti.

Speaking at the event, governor Oyebamiji, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information, Olusesan Alabi commended the cleric for his philanthropic nature, saying his efforts towards reducing unemployment among Nigerian youths cannot be overemphasized.

In his remark, Prophet Olu-Alo thanked God for divine favour despite obstacles faced in life, saying plans are underway to establish a global television station in Ido-Ekiti, Ibadan, and Lagos to give employment and put his hometown on the global map.

He revealed his plan to build a world-class piggery, grass cutter farm, and palm tree farms.

He said: “I request 100 hectares of land each for these three projects from you the Kings in my hometown similar to what we have for the SOAF Medical Centre in Irete-Ijebu,” Olu-Alo said, adding that the farms would provide employment to at least 200 youths, and their produce would be a major source of export to other countries.

Alo said the reason why he ventured into commercial operations was born out of his commitment to inspire younger generations to become better people and support the government in meeting the needs of the masses.

He stated that he had experienced the worst circumstances of life but later became widely celebrated through dedication and perseverance in God’s work.

“Youths who have become lazy and easily depressed by the state of affairs of the nation should not be discouraged by whatever circumstances.”

While speaking at the event, the Olojudo of Ido Faboro-Ekiti, and chairman of Ekiti state traditional council of Obas, said that in Olu-Alo, he had found a passionate being who matched his vision for the growth of Ido-Ekiti.

He said he had jokingly asked Olu-Alo to set up his next radio station in his hometown in October 2023, affirming that charity begins at home, and was expressly excited to launch the station eight months after the pronouncement.

“When Babatunde Bamigboye (Omo Edema) reached out to me for land to build the new radio station. I asked if they were ready to build or just wanted the land for keeps in the long term but to my surprise they said they were ready to build the radio station and I’m happy that having toiled in the rain with them that day to find the best location for the citing of the radio station, they wasted no time in setting to work.”

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Ekiti, Dayo Apata, (SAN) described Prophet Olu-Alo as a friend and brother whom God has used tremendously to impact lives positively.

He thanked God for the cleric’s life and sought divine strength for him to continue to excel.

The Regional Superintendent CAC Essien Region and Benin Republic, Pastor Isaac Eyebiokin, and Planter CAC, the Boaneges, Prophet Ade Ologbonyo, hailed Prophet Olu-Alo for giving hope to Nigerians at a time of economic troubles.

The Chairman of the Ido Town Development Council, Hon. Sola Ogunsina said despite government intervention, Ido-Ekiti had taken its pride of place among other communities in Ekiti as a self-developed town.

He said the community had developed a strong belief that individuals could follow Olu-Alo’s path to execute legacy projects, hailing the cleric for leading by example.

Earlier, the chairman of Adamimogo FM, Nigeria, Elder Afolabi Imoukhoude, extolled the cleric for his holistic approach to impacting people’s lives.

He said Prophet Olu-Alo not only addressed people’s problems via messages but had taken time to address their physical, psychological, and social well-being through various establishments under the Adamimogo Global outreach, comprising palliatives to widows and the elderly, a global sports team known as Adamimogo FC which discovers and nurtures soccer talents, as well as the media arm and world-standard health facility.

The highlights of the event included the cutting of a birthday cake, the commissioning of Christ Apostolic Church Oke-Isegun’s Maternity Faith Home, donated by Prophet Alo, and the commissioning of Adamimogo 107.7FM, the third in Adamimogo’s franchise after Adamimogo 93.1FM in Lekki, Lagos, and Adamimogo 105.1FM in Ibadan, Oyo State.
