While acknowledging some shortcomings, he emphasized that the Unit’s overall impact has been positive, and disbanding it would be counterproductive to the state’s security interests.

“The Tiger base is a creation of circumstances, and I quite appreciate them for the good job they are doing. It is a team that makes us safe, but also, I want to acknowledge some of their shortcomings because they are human beings and are not infallible.”

Speaking at a 2-day ‘Citizens’ engagement on Police Reform in Nigeria,’ organized by the CLEEN Foundation, yesterday,  in Owerri, Aboki emphasized that the Unit’s proactive operations have significantly reduced kidnapping, armed robbery, ritual killings, violent abductions, and other related vices to their lowest level.

He cautioned the public against calling for the Unit’s disbandment, saying, “The security challenges in the state would have acquired a much more dangerous dimension but for the proactive consistent operation of the Unit.”

Regarding public outcry over alleged police brutality, violation of fundamental human rights, and extortion, Aboki assured that disciplinary units have been established to try erring police officers.

He also mentioned a ‘Complaint Response Unit’ that entertains complaints from aggrieved members of the public.

Represented by Assistant Commissioner of Police Edwin Mkpah, Aboki said, “Police is a product of the society, and we Nigerians and the government should be honest to ourselves because when we open up and tell ourselves the truth, the reform will start.”

The house, which was said to have been later rebuilt by the Ezemagu family in the community, was brought down again, with members of the family accusing the monarch of culpability in media reports.

But, addressing newsmen in his palace, the monarch said that the renewed campaign against him was a ploy to wrestle a disputed piece of land from him.

“The recent media reports about the demolition of the blind man’s house are a rehash of an incident from 2021, aimed at garnering public sympathy. I am saying for the umpteenth time that I did not demolish the blind man’s house”, the monarch said.

Okwor recounted that when the initial incident occurred in 2021, the then-chairman of Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area, Nkechi Ugwu-Oju, provided N4 million for the construction of a new building for the blind man in an uncontested land.

LG autonomy: Ex-ALGON chairmen laud Appeal Court’s judgment

•Say LG to experience boost under Tinubu

The forum of the former Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), chairmen have lauded the Court of Appeal’s judgment upholding the financial autonomy of local governments in Nigeria and monitoring of the management of local government funds by state governments.

Speaking on behalf of the chairmen on Thursday in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, the former Abia State ALGON Chairman, Hon. Ibe Michael Nwoke described the ruling as a “ray of hope” for local government administration and grassroots development without undue interference by state governors.

Nwoke who ran for Obingwa/Osisioma/Ugwunagbo federal constituency, on the platform of the Young Progressive Party (YPP) in the 2023 general election, noted that the forum which remains a stakeholder in the affairs of the local government’s operations across Nigeria was elated that democracy and its dividends would be felt at the grassroots with the Appeal Court’s judgment.

According to him “The judgment delivered by the Court of Appeal raises hope for local government administration in Nigeria and ensures that funds for local governments would not be tampered with.

“We are excited at the appeal court judgment and we hope that state governors would do the needful by obeying the courts and also conduct local government elections in their various states.”

He used the forum to thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for ensuring that the right thing is done and believes with him at the helm of affairs in Nigeria, local government administration in Nigeria would experience a serious boost.

Recall that 36 states and the Nigeria Governors Forum had challenged the legality of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU0, guidelines which came into effect on June 1, 2019, that requires state governments to use specific accounts for receiving and transferring funds to local governments.

The guidelines were aimed at reducing vulnerabilities created by cash withdrawals from local government funds but the Governors had approached the court describing the guidelines as unlawful and unconstitutional.

The former ALGON chairman noted that the court’s decision was final and expected to be binding and expected to be complied with by state governors.

Tribunal okays Uzodimma’s second term election

•Anyanwu: Judgment is miscarriage of justice

The Imo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal, sitting in Abuja, has upheld the election of Hope Uzodimma of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as Imo State governor for the second term.

In two unanimous judgments on Friday, the three-member tribunal dismissed the petition by the Labour Party (LP) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and their candidates in the election held on November 11, 2023.

However, the PDP governorship candidate in the election, Senator Samuel Anyanwu has rejected the tribunal’s ruling, while calling on his supporters to remain resolute.

At the November 11, 2023, Imo governorship election, the LP had as its candidate, Athan Achonu, while the candidate of the PDP was Samuel Anyanwu in the election.

Both parties had, in their petitions, raised allegations of non-compliance with relevant provisions of the Electoral Act and malpractices.

There was also the challenge of Uzodimma’s qualification, based on the claim that his General Certificate of Education (GCE) result was forged.

They prayed the court to void  Uzodimma’s election on the grounds that he did not score the majority of lawful votes cast in the election.

In the lead judgment in the petition by the LP, read by Justice Oluyemi Akintan-Osadebay, the tribunal held that Uzodimma’s election as Imo State governor complied substantially with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

The tribunal equally held that the petitioner failed to prove their allegations of over-voting and non-compliance to the Electoral Act as required.

In the judgment in the petition by the PDP and its candidate, the tribunal equally found that the petitioners failed to discharge the burden of proof imposed on them by the law.

The tribunal held that the petitioners failed to prove that Uzodinma submitted a forged certificate and that the election violated the Electoral Act.

The tribunal proceeded to dismiss both petitions for lacking in merit.

Anyanwu: Judgment is miscarriage of justice

Reacting to the tribunal ruling yesterday, Senator Anyanwu vowed to do everything within the ambit of the law to reclaim his stolen mandate.

He said that the verdict of the Election Petition Tribunal was so inconsequential that it would not hinder him from achieving success at the end of the day.

While describing the judgment as a miscarriage of justice, he further assured that he would not be deterred by the minor setback at the lower court, adding that all necessary legal avenues would be explored until victory was assured.

According to him, the ruling of the tribunal was another clear case of misplaced judgment which violates the substance of the petitions challenging monumental election irregularities, falsification of results, and disqualification.

“Today, there is a charged atmosphere in Imo State; the faces of Imo people are looking moody and unhappy. This shows that their efforts to enthrone good governance by voting for me as their preferred candidate have been hijacked.

“We can’t accept this judgment, we shall utilize all constitutional means to regain our mandate. In a few days from now, my legal team will be done with the review of the verdict. Thereafter, we shall do the needful.”

Anyanwu maintained that his party has substantial merit to further seek redress at the Appeal Court to challenge the judgment of the tribunal, and enjoins PDP members and his supporters to remain resolute and peaceful until the stolen mandate is recovered.
