Leverkusen deserve to win treble, says Alonso

Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso believes his team deserve all three titles available to them this season after they qualified for the Europa League final by overcoming AS Roma on Thursday.

Leverkusen, the Bundesliga champions who have also reached the May 25 German Cup final, played their 49th match without defeat in all competitions, surpassing Benfica’s long-standing European record set from 1963 to 1965.

They achieved the milestone after a late comeback from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw at home to Roma, securing their spot in the May 22 final in Dublin by 4-2 on aggregate.

“We’ll play two finals in a week as a result,” Alonso said. “We showed great character today after their second goal. I looked my players in the eye afterwards and saw that they wanted more.

Klopp sets new Liverpool target for season

Liverpool Manager Juergen Klopp Expects To Be Out Of The Premier League Title Race Before His Side visit Aston Villa on Monday, but he has set his team a new target of reaching 80 points as they look to finish strongly.

Third-placed Liverpool had their hopes of winning the title shredded after a run of bad results last month and while they are mathematically still in with a chance, that might not be the case when they arrive at Villa Park.

Manchester City, in second place, face Fulham today  while league leaders Arsenal play Manchester United tomorrow  and if either of the top two picks up three points then Liverpool’s slim hopes will be extinguished.

Klopp, who will leave Anfield at the end of the season and will manage his last Liverpool away game at Villa, is not expecting any slip ups.

“We can all read the table and see the situation,” he said with Liverpool on 78 points, five behind Arsenal and four adrift of City who have a game in hand. “City has to lose three games. Difficult to see that, but you never know. Arsenal has to lose two games. Difficult. They both play before us, so let’s talk on Monday if they both lose, but I do not expect that.

“I think we have enough to do. We have the chance to go above 80 points again; like pretty much everything in life, you never should take things like this for granted.”

  • Vinicius tipped for first Ballon d’Or win

Vinicius tipped for first Ballon d’Or win

Vinicius Jr’s dazzling performances at Real Madrid have put the Brazilian forward in conversation to win his first Ballon d’Or and manager Carlo Ancelotti said the 23-year-old deserved to win the prestigious award.

Vinicius has netted five times and provided as many assists in the Champions League alone this season to help Madrid book a place in the final, while also scoring 13 goals in LaLiga, which they clinched for a record-extending 36th time last weekend.

The record 14-times European champions will take on German side Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final at Wembley on June 1.

“He’s doing a great job,” Ancelotti told reporters on the eve of Saturday’s league trip to relegation-threatened Granada.

“He’s still got the Champions League final to come and then he’ll be at the Copa America. He’s very close, and if he has positive results in both competitions, he could well win it (Ballon d’Or).

“Before I came to coach Madrid, I saw Vinicius on TV and I thought what an incredibly talented player he looked. When I arrived here, that much was clear, and he’s improved on many things to enhance that talent.

“He’s better at evading his markers now and has improved in front of goal as well. He’s done so with a spectacular work ethic on a daily basis, he’s focused in training and recovers well after matches.

“He’s a highly disciplined professional and he deserves everything he’s achieved.”

But Ancelotti said the rest of his squad have been just as important in a campaign where several key players at Madrid have suffered injuries.

Vinicius moved to the Santiago Bernabeu from Brazil’s Flamengo in 2018.

“He’s among the best in the world and this is Vinicius’ moment because he brings us so much. He’s been important in us making the Champions League final and winning LaLiga. But we mustn’t forget how the others have contributed,” the Italian said.

“Madrid’s time is up until the first of June. After that, who knows, it might be Borussia’s moment.”

French defensive midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni is a doubt for the final after picking up an injury in their semi-final win over Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

“(Goalkeeper Thibaut) Courtois will play, as will (Eder) Militao. They both need the game time… (goalkeeper Andriy) Lunin has to be ready to play as well. That’s why I’ll have to assess the goalkeeping issue in the coming games,” Ancelotti said on team rotation.

Returning Chelsea’s James in contention for Forest

Chelsea defender Reece James could make his long awaited return to the pitch away at Nottingham Forest on Saturday five months after having surgery on his hamstring, manager Mauricio Pochettino said.

James has made eight appearances in the league this season and last played on Dec. 10 against Everton.

“We need to see today (at training) but maybe he can be available in the squad, yes,” Pochettino told reporters on Friday regarding James. “The most important thing is Reece James is going to be there for us. We have an amazing relationship and of course he is an amazing player.

“It is not easy when you comeback from a long-term injury. The most important thing is he can be available and be part of the squad. It is important to finish (the season) with good feelings.”

The return of James could be a big boost for Chelsea in their final three games as they chase European competition next season and also fuels hope the 24-year-old could feature for England at Euro 2024.

Chelsea are seventh in the standings on 54 points, while relegation-threatened Forest are three points above the drop zone in 17th  with two games remaining.

“It’s true it’s going to be hard (to qualify for European competition),” Pochettino said. “Of course, we know very well we need to win games in the last three games. We then have a possibility to move into a place to play in Europe.

“The team is ready to face the last three games and it is important for us to be in Europe.”

OLD FIRM DERBY: Celtic set for third straight Scottish Premiership crown

Aiming to take a significant step towards a third straight Scottish Premiership crown, Celtic will welcome arch rivals Rangers to Celtic Park for an Old Firm derby clash this afternoon.

The Bhoys are in pole position to retain the Scottish crown for another season, whilst the Gers will feel this weekend is the final realistic opportunity to close the gap to their Glasgow neighbours.

Since the post-season split in the middle of April, title holders Celtic have recorded back-to-back wins in the Championship Group in order to boost their chances of recording a third successive Premiership crown and the first following the return of Brendan Rodgers as manager last summer.

Although Hearts are set to be crowned as the best of the rest in Scotland’s top flight, they were simply no match for the Bhoys last Saturday, when Kyogo Furuhashi brace and a second-half brace from goalscoring midfielder Matt O’Riley secured a 3-0 success for the hosts at Parkhead.

Heading into the final three matches of the Premiership term, Celtic are currently sitting pretty in first place, three points ahead of second-placed Rangers, with matches against the Gers, Kilmarnock and St Mirren to come before an Old Firm Scottish Cup final at Hampden Park on May 25.

  • Guardiola dismisses Man Utd favour in title chase

Guardiola dismisses Man Utd favour in title chase

Pep Guardiola won’t ask for a favour from Manchester United this weekend as the Manchester City manager tries to overhaul “incredible” Arsenal in the Premier League title race.

City boss Guardiola takes his side to Fulham today  knowing a victory would move them two points clear of leaders Arsenal.

But the Gunners will reclaim top spot if they win at Manchester United tomorrow, putting City fans in the unusual position of having to support their local rivals.

Asked if he would be cheering on United when Arsenal visit Old Trafford, Guardiola insisted the only thing he is worried about is taking three points from the trip to Craven Cottage.

“I’m a City fan, try to beat Fulham, this is all I’m concerned about,” Guardiola told reporters.

City are chasing an unprecedented fourth successive Premier League title and will lift the trophy if they win their last three games against Fulham, Tottenham and West Ham.

But they have been pushed to the brink by Arsenal this season in a battle that reminds Guardiola of his team’s title fights with Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp’s men twice finished runners-up to City and became the only team to stop them winning the title in the last six seasons in 2020.

Guardiola ranks Arsenal alongside Liverpool in terms of the quality of opposition posed to City during his reign at the Etihad.

“The same level as Liverpool in the last years. Both teams are incredible and have been incredible,” he said.

If City are to finish the season as champions yet again, they are likely to need three more influential performances from Rodri, the Spain midfielder who was snubbed in the Premier League Player of the Year award nominations this week.

  • Manchester Utd welcome Arsenal to crumbling Old Trafford

Manchester Utd welcome Arsenal to crumbling Old Trafford

Tomorrow’S solitary Premier League offering sees a pair of English football powerhouses scrap it out at Old Trafford, as Manchester United welcome Arsenal to their crumbling fortress. Erik ten Hag’s men are reeling from their embarrassing 4-0 thrashing at Crystal Palace on Monday night, while the Gunners eventually wore down the Bournemouth defences in a 3-0 win last weekend.

Just when Man United’s forgettable 2023-24 season could seemingly not reach a lower ebb, Crystal Palace completed their first-ever league double over the Red Devils in astonishing fashion on Monday night, hitting Ten Hag’s disorganised troops for four without reply at Selhurst Park.

Michael Olise – allegedly a summer transfer target for Man United – added a few more pounds to his value with a brilliant brace in the capital, while Jean-Philippe Mateta and Tyrick Mitchell also got in on the act to condemn the Red Devils to an 18th  loss of the season in all competitions and their 13th  in the Premier League, a new unwanted record.

Man United’s Champions League hopes had long since evaporated before being blown to Selhurst smithereens, and earning just one win from their last seven Premier League contests leaves the Red Devils outside of European contention completely as far as the standings are concerned, sitting in eighth spot but only behind Chelsea on goal difference.

Of course, Ten Hag’s charges could earn a golden ticket to the Europa League via the FA Cup glory route, with two weeks to go until a repeat of last year’s final with Manchester City, and stardom in the Wembley sunshine will likely be Ten Hag’s last saving grace before he vacates the hot seat to a new name this summer.

Shipping four goals to the Eagles on Monday night also took Man United’s conceded column for all tournaments this season to an alarming 81 – their worst tally since the 1976-77 term – although Arsenal will not be underestimating the Old Trafford factor; Ten Hag’s side have scored in all of their Premier League home matches in 2024 so far.

Don’t leave host community in ruins, Tinubu warns lithium investors

According to a statement by Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, Sule was accompanied on the visit to the President by Mr. Hi Yongwei, Chairman of Avatar New Energy Materials Company Limited, and Mr. Zhenhua Pei, Chairman, Canmax Technologies.

The President urged the companies to prioritize environmental protection, community engagement, and corporate social responsibility initiatives, ensuring that their operations benefit the local population and minimize ecological damage.

Avatar New Energy Materials Company Limited has invested $500 million in the lithium processing plant, which produces about 4,000 metric tonnes daily. Canmax Technologies has announced a new investment of $200 million for another lithium processing plant in Nasarawa State.

He, however stated his administration’s commitment to ensuring that Nigeria becomes a key player in the global lithium market and a solar panel and EV battery manufacturing hub in Africa.

”There are other aspects of lithium that you are exploring in the country, especially in battery production. Nigeria is a huge market for solar panels. Africa is a major consumer of solar technologies. I do not see why these panels and batteries cannot be produced here.

“The labour is cheaper. Our youths are vibrant and skilled. Our people are brilliant and adapt to new technology. The economy is increasingly more vibrant, and Nigeria is dependable. We have the consumption capacity and a surplus of steady-handed citizens with gifted minds and an innate drive to work and produce.

”We are caring partners. We want your investments to succeed so that you can expand further. Whenever you call on us, we will help you. You can, in mutually-beneficial collaboration with us, dominate the solar panel market as part of a revolution in Africa and the West African sub-region.

”You can always promote the interest of China and Nigeria as the best place in Africa to do business. We are preparing to produce in this country the solar technologies that the entire continent will use,” the President said.

Tinubu also applauded Sule and Minister of Solid Minerals, Mr. Dele Alake, for their dedication to ensuring environmental protection and value addition by mining firms operating in the country.

”The Governor of Nasarawa State and the Honourable Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, also share in these congratulations.

”It is a great joy to have you (the Chinese executives) in Nigeria. It is part of our campaign that Nigeria is open for business. We congratulate your courage in believing in us and the inauguration of the new factory.

”I can assure you that we will continue to give you the necessary support and encouragement. This is an opportunity for you to help tell the rest of the investment world that Nigeria is solid and open for business,” the President said.
