Why we are yet to import petrol, by MOMAN

Members of the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN) are yet to import the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) petrol because they are still strategising on how to do so.

Its Executive Secretary, Mr. Clement Isong, made this kmown to The Nation on phone at the weekend.

According to him,  MOMAN has commenced negotiation with the suppliers of the product.

He noted that the members need to research to know the exchange rate, landing cost, selling price and the volume to import before placing an order for the importation.

His words: “We are looking at the numbers. We are trying to source foreign exchange.  We are looking  at the number they will produce.

“You have the price. You have to source for dollars and now buy the product. If I buy the product how much am I selling to Nigeria. What is the average  price in Nigeria?

“I will say we are negotiating. We are looking for the product.  We are talking to the suppliers. How soon? Some are very fast. It is sooner than later.”

Isong said the market is yet to stabilise since the removal of subsidy last month.

He projected that calm could only return to the market at the end of this month since a lot of factors were still affecting it.

The Executive Secretary said price of the Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) diesel  was declining in Nigeria due to the fall of the prices in the international market.

On the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), he said customers  should  demand the product from MOMAN.

Isong suggested there should be a trade corridor for gas-fired vehicles.

He stressed that as deregulation had taken effect, it is enough to restore investors and vehicle owners’ confidence for conversion to gas.

  • Manufacturers’ capacity utilisation drops to 54.9% on high energy costs

Manufacturers’ capacity utilisation drops to 54.9% on high energy costs

    • •Production value slumps to N2.68tr

Capacity utilisation in the manufacturing sector in the second half of last year declined to 54.9 per cent from 59 per cent recorded in the corresponding half of 2021,  indicating 4.1 percentage points decline over the period.

This was contained in the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) ‘Bi-annual Economic Review’ for the second half of last year.

The document said quarterly, capacity utilisation declined by three percentage points compared with 57.9 per cent recorded in the first half of the year.

The report presented the summary of the survey of the manufacturing sector for the second half of last year.

The survey was designed to monitor changes in manufacturing sector performance indicators through the behaviours of macro-economic and policy environments during the period of the survey.

MAN, in the survey, said manufacturing capacity utilisation averaged 56.4 per cent in 2022 as against 55.9 per cent average of 2021.

The association said the decline in manufacturing capacity utilisation in the second half of 2022 was due to the adverse effect of high cost of energy and the Russian Ukrainian war.

It added that the grave effects of the Naira redesign policy and other perennial challenges such as acute shortage of foreign exchange (forex) for importation of raw materials and machines, high cost of borrowing and many more contributed to the decline.

MAN also lamented that limited purchases by households due to the Naira redesign policy, the high inflationary pressure in the country, high cost of energy, particularly diesel and gas, negatively affected production in the sector.

Consequently, manufacturing sector factory output value declined to N2.68 trillion in the second half of last year, from N3.73 trillion recorded in the corresponding half of 2021; thus, indicating N1.05 trillion or 28 per cent decline over the period.

Production value also declined N1.31 trillion or 32 per cent when compared with N3.99 trillion recorded in the preceding half.

MAN, in the survey, also said manufacturing production was severely affected in the second half of 2022 by absence of implementation of new capital project by the government as they focused on the 2023 election.

It also added that acute shortage of forex for importation of raw materials and machinery needs of the sector that are not locally manufactured, among others, contributed to the decline.

“Unfortunately, the issues of the basic metal group whereby duty of Annealed Cold roll was reduced to five per cent from the previous 45 per cent; the suspension of motorcycles in some areas across states; the increase in the duty of paper from five per cent to 20 per cent and so on are still effective.

“These challenges, in addition to the perennial issues, contribute enormously to the dip in the production of the sector in the period under review,” MAN Director-General Segun Ajayi-Kadir said in the document, which was made available to The Nation.

According to Ajayi-Kadir, the effect of the Russia-Ukraine war on the Nigerian economy was quick in the second half of 2022, as the cost of wheat and other food inputs increased.

He also said prices of fuels, particularly diesel, rose by over 50 per cent, while cost of transportation logistics including shipping escalated, even as the effect of COVID-19 pandemic was yet to fully die down.

“In addition to these challenges was the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Naira redesign policy, which aimed at bringing N3 trillion in the economy to the control of the banking system.

“The policy created a cash crunch that debilitated economic activities in the last quarter of 2022. This particularly affected the manufacturing sector adversely as it was extremely difficult to sell most of the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) and other commodities by the sector in the period,” the MAN DG said.

He said consequently, it is critically important that the challenges identified by manufacturers in the course of the survey are adequately addressed by allowing industrial policies in the country to gestate with proper monitoring and evaluation rather than jettisoning or altering them unduly frequently.

Ajayi-Kadir recommended strengthening the implementation of the Executive Order 003 and 005 and monitoring their implementation to ensure compliance by Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs)  to boost activities in the manufacturing sector.

He further recommended that government should, through fiscal and monetary policy authorities’ joint effort, formulate and implement a national policy that would address the current high inflation in the country.

Ajayi-Kadir also said to enhance the fortunes of the manufacturing sector, there was the need to improve forex availability by unifying the various forex windows and prioritising forex intervention through the official market, particularly to support the raw materials and machine needs of industries.

Other measures, he said, include developing and implementing a roadmap for improved power supply, resuscitation of domestic refining, incentivising investment in local development of raw materials, re-invigorating the backward integration policy through the use of local resources to provide raw materials to the industries, and improving infrastructure, among others.

  • Seven Days of Umo Eno: Advent of the golden governor

Seven Days of Umo Eno: Advent of the golden governor

    • By A n i e t i e U s e n

Towering at six feet tall with a regular weight of 90 kilograms, and dressed this afternoon in a dark maroon suit, a white shirt with a spotted tie to match, Governor Umo Eno walked briskly into the sprawling State Banquet Hall to the ovation of the mammoth crowd, jam packed with his adoring supporters. It was his first official assignment as the governor of the beautiful and peace-loving people of Akwa Ibom State, South-South Nigeria.

All was set this afternoon for the swearing-in of his newly appointed Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, the champion of Uyo politics and scion of the famous Uwah dynasty, which Governor Umo Eno, a pastor and entrepreneur had chosen as the engine room of his nascent Administration. Straight from the Security Entrance, where he gained access to the Banquet Hall, Governor Eno, nicknamed as the Golden Governor, walked quickly across the front row of the hall, pumping hands, hugging friends and waving endlessly with a permanent smile playing on his lips; just as he was accustomed to, during his long tortuous campaign stump across the 31 LGAs of the oil-rich State. He was the cynosure of all eyes, exuding confidence and feeling at home before a crowd that idolised him and had stood by him against all odds for 14 months of political consultations and rigorous campaigns.

Preliminaries are done with. Pleasantries are over. Some sort of decorum is restored in the hall. Standing now before the new governor, backing the curious crowd and about to take an oath of office as Secretary to the State Government, SSG, was the Secretary General of the Governorship Campaign Council, Prince Uwah. He is a natural choice for the job or as they say it the man the cap fits. His nickname is Hammer and the hall erupted with the chant of ‘Hammer, Hammer, Hammer’. He had also played the same crucial role as the Secretary General of the Governor Udom Emmanuel’s Campaign Council, during the second term campaign of the former governor. So the excitement of his constituents was both palpable and understandable.

Soon, the solemnity of the occasion dawned on all, as Hammer began to read after the governor the oath of office followed by the oath of allegiance. He stood ramrod like a royal guard and a clean-shaven head like Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. With his navy blue suit, white shirt and pink tie, he cut the image of a banker. In a moment, the SSG was through with the ritual. “So help me God”, he concluded, to the thunderous applause of the audience.

Next, the governor read his prepared speech extolling the virtues and enviable track record of the SSG. “You are coming into Office at the time our State is on the cusp of greatness, and as the Engine Room of Government, you are expected to deploy your organisational and people’s skills in managing our vast bureaucracy, which thankfully, is undergoing E-Governance processes…This is the Golden Era of our State, and we have zero-tolerance for weak links in our engine of operations. I am confident of the choice we have made in you. Go there, get the job done, for our State and for our people and afterwards, come the Happy Hours…”. The Hall erupted again with another thunderous ovation.

But perhaps the best line of the governor’s speech was not in the written address. It was extempore and off-the-cuff. “I intend to run this business of Government with a private sector mindset…and usher Akwa Ibom fully into a golden era”. And many believe the Golden Governor has what it takes to accomplish the task, goals and mission he has set for himself. One strong believer in him is his very accomplished predecessor, former Governor Udom Emmanuel, who with Obong Victor Attah, another former Governor and modern father of Akwa Ibom State, headhunted Governor Eno for the office and role he is occupying today. Said Emmanuel publicly on the day he inaugurated the PDP Governorship Campaign Council in Uyo: “The man that is coming after me (Umo Eno) is a hundred times better than me”. For a very accomplished governor like Udom Emmanuel, who has broken records of good governance in recent time, to say that about Eno, means the State is truly poised for a golden era.

Evidentially, Akwa Ibom has since the end of military rule in 1999, produced the best possible crop of leaders in Nigeria, from Obong Attah till now. Many, very often agree that Governor Emmanuel has surpassed them all. It would appear the full story of Governor Emmanuel has not yet been fully told. One thing that is certain and settled in the minds of Akwa Ibom people is that one of the greatest achievements of former Governor Godswill Akpabio was headhunting Udom Emmanuel to raise the bar of good governance and make Akwa Ibom a model State in Nigeria. By the time Emmanuel concluded his eight years in office last week, the poser on many lips was not what has Udom Emmanuel done with our money but where did he get the money in this hard times to accomplish so much! This is the same shoe that Governor Eno has stepped into for one week now. He is literally speaking in the shoes of a giant, as his predecessor had diligently and quietly brought Akwa Ibom State to the “cusp of greatness” to quote Eno himself in his inaugural speech on May 29, 2023.

The good news is that in his first week in office, Governor Eno has shone and shown signs of greatness. The child of a lion, as an Akwa Ibom adage says, dare not resemble a goat. Not surprising, Governor Eno swung into action immediately after his oath of office. First, he saw off his predecessor to his country home in Awa Iman, Onna LGA, before he made brief stops to thank his community people of Ikot Ekpene Udo, and pay homages to the No.1 traditional ruler of Akwa Ibom State, Nteyin Solomon Etuk, who is also the paramount ruler of Nsit Ubium, the Oku Ibom Ibibio and the President General of the Akwa Ibom Traditional Rulers Council. That same night, on his first day in office, he wound up in the company of his wife, Patience, and the deputy governor, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, at the inaugural State Banquet at the Ibom Hotels and Golf Resort which lasted till the early hours of May 30, 2023.

Later that same day, May 30, 2023, Governor Eno announced his first five appointments in a Press Release signed by Dr. Nathaniel Akpadiaha, the Permanent Secretary in Government House. They included Prince Enobong Uwah, as SSG, Ekerete Udo, Chief Press Secretary, Anietie Usen, Senior Special Assistant, Otobong Edem Idiong, Chief of Protocol and Dr. Mrs. Uduakobong Inam, Economic Adviser.

The next day, May 31, 2023, was hectic for the new governor as top government officials, old and new, took turns to meet and brief him, inside his expansive and stately new office, considered as one of the most beautiful governor’s offices in Nigeria. The new governor is a workaholic. The earliest he leaves the office is 10pm. Even at 10pm, May 31, he left the office with some of his aides to visit Obong Paul Ekpo, the former PDP State Chairman, current National Ex-officio Member Of the Party and Member-elect of the House of Representatives, who lost his wife, after a protracted illness. He spent nearly an hour with the bereaved family and as a pastor, knew the exact words of comfort and consolation for Obong Ekpo, who was one of the pillars of his electoral victory. “In everything God wants us to thank Him and everything means everything…”

Perhaps, one of the best of Governor Eno’s first seven days was June 1, 2023. It was just his fourth day as governor and he was learning fast and gaining a firmer grip of the ship of State. First, he did what no other governor has done in the State. He drove a short distance from his office in the company of Senator Eyaknyi, his deputy, to visit the Press Centre, where the CPS and SSA, M&P hold sway. It was his way of demonstrating the respect and importance he attaches to the media. Next was his most important assignment for the day.

For the eight years of his predecessor, Udom Emmanuel, the first day of every month was the Government House Covenant Service. It is one of the days government officials as well as senior political stakeholders gather in the Government House Chapel by 6pm to praise God, pray, listen to sermons by guest preachers and worship God. Under Governor Emmanuel, this prayer programme was also followed by another prayer programme, known as Government House Prayer Service, held every third Saturday of the month at 8am. So, June 1, 2023 was the first Government House Covenant Service that would be presided over by the newly elected governor who is also a pastor and church founder. It was reckoned that the usual venue in the Government House Chapel would be too small for the expected crowd. The governor directed that the venue be shifted to the sprawling Banquet Hall next door. Even then hundreds could only find a standing position as the Banquet Hall was filled beyond capacity.

Taking over the microphone soon after the praise, worship, sermon and prayers, Governor Eno was at his best, both as a pastor and a politician. He began with the song MADE A WAY by Travis Green. It is a chart buster in Christendom worldwide and the congregation erupted in joy and took over the song from his mouth: “You made a way/Don’t know how, but You did it/Nothing can catch You by surprise/ You got this figured out…When it looks as if we can’t win/You wrap us in Your arm and step in/ And everything we need You supply/You got this in control/ And now we know that

You made a way/And we’re standing here/ Only because You made a way/ And you move mountains/You cause walls to fall/ With Your power/You perform miracles/There is nothing that’s impossible/And we’re standing here/Only because You made a way”.

By the time the song ended, the governor was moved enough to jokingly remind the jam packed hall that Akwa Ibom State has got both a governor and a pastor in one person. “Now you know that God has given you two for the price of one”, he said. The crowd bursted into laughter. But that was not the highlight of the Covenant Service. The highlight was the testimony the governor shared on how God raised him from nowhere and helped him through the fiery furnace of political fire to become the governor.

“I have to thank you, thank God who has made it possible for us to be here. It looks like a dream for me…But again, that song ministered to me several times when it was as if I was breaking down…I remember one day I got so boxed up and my last daughter, Ebenezer, came to me and said ‘Daddy do you really need all of this? What are you looking for? You don’t need this. You have trained us, we don’t lack anything, we’re okay. Please this attack is getting too much’

“So one day, I walked up to the Governor and said, ‘Your Excellency, I think I want to quit, not because whatever they are saying is true but I think my family is really not ready for these insults. And the governor looked at me and said, ‘Pastor, did you take breakfast today? Let’s go and have breakfast’. And then we went on to attend a meeting and he said: ‘my option A is Umo Eno, my option B is Umo Eno, my option C and D is Umo Eno…’ That gave me some strength to continue…I know clearly that the shoe I’m stepping into is very big. Don’t mind him (former Governor Udom Emmanuel) when he says I’ll accomplish 200 times more than him. It’s a prophecy and I claim it because he is Elijah and I am Elisha. But you know, the God of this new beginning will go with us. And it’s only if he goes with us, that we’ll accomplish that which God has sent us to do”, Governor Eno said.

It was at that same gathering that the governor gave Akwa Ibom people a glimpse of his soon coming appointments. He had never hidden his desire to preside over an inclusive government. But today, he granted many a deeper insight into the composition of his government. “We will work with you and with everyone else to set a new agenda for Akwa Ibom. That’s who we are. There’s really no time to say that this government has ended and this one has started. Like I keep saying to people, please don’t expect that kind of miracle that you don’t want to see the old faces again and there should be only new faces. It can’t work like that. We need the wisdom of the old to be able to navigate the new. And so you’ll see a mixed grill of the new and the old. There’s no way you can put away the old. After Solomon departed, the sons of Solomon did it and the kingdom split. You need to put both together. You need the ideas of the old”.

To call a spade a spade, he went into specifics. “I won’t leave people that were with me in the trenches; people that went to 31 LGAs with me and suffered all the hard times with me for people who have long CVs. I am saying this because I’m receiving more CVs now than the people that were with me during the campaigns. That is not to say that you’ll not see the new. But more importantly, you’ll see those that were with us in the trenches”. He also said that his Personal Assistants will come each of the 329 wards of the State, and they will be active supporters of PDP who reside in their wards and contributed to the success of PDP.

The next morning saw him in the home of his political grandfather, Obong Victor Attah, where he went to thank the respected elder statesman, for standing firmly with him, when Governor Emmanuel endorsed him as his successor on January 30, 2022. Later that evening and for the first time since he became governor, he stepped into the State-owned Executive Gulf Stream jet and flew out of the State; first to the monthly Holy Ghost Service in Redemption Camp, near Lagos, before he jetted out to Bauchi to attend the PDP Retreat for newly elected governors and national lawmakers. With the help of the State Executive jet, he was back to Uyo that same evening into the warm welcome of government officials led by Senator Eyakenyi, the deputy governor. Straight from the airport, he drove to the traditional marriage of the daughter of late Oron political stalwart, Pastor Onyong Asuquo.

On Sunday, the seventh day of his tenure, he attended his  first Sunday service as governor, at the All Nation Christian Ministry International, Eket, the Church he founded 20 years ago, where he also indicated and justified his intention to look inwards for the coming Akwa Christmas Carol Festival. “This year’s Christmas Carol Festival will have a little twig. I would like us to localise our Christmas carol this year and I will tell how we are going to do it. This because we will use that platform to promote and raise our local talents. It’s a big platform that people all over the world will come or tune in to it. We will look at churches. I want them to get ready, the big and small churches, we will invite them, let all of us come out. I would like to see creativity that is beyond hymns”, he said.

Whether in his appointments, visits or statements, the first one week of Governor Umo Eno is a pointer to a deft political move by a shrewd political actor, to quickly strengthen and consolidate his political base and assure same, as the Bible says that “the hardworking farmers should be the first to enjoy the fruit of their labour”.

They lamented roads in their vicinity had become impassable and urged the govenor to talk to the council chairman, Kunle Olowoopejo.

Residents berated Olowoopejo for non-performance and chided him for not undertaking projects.

A resident said they approached the chairman to repair Ogunrombi Road leading to Shasha/Orisumibare, but he said the road was not within the council’s coverage.

A resident said: “We have appealed to the chairman many times; after all we pay our tax. But he keeps acting as if he has no obligation to the people. ‘’

“Even if the roads are beyond his duties, he can do repairs pending when the state will intervene.

“Now that the rains are here, it is terrible for us, so we are pleading for intervention. The chairman was forced to lay the Pipeline Road with interlocking blocks after a governorship aspirant came for campaigns and promised to repair it. Even then the road is only half done. We call on Governor Sanwo-Olu to call Olowoopejo to order.”

A motorist, Saliu Akande  joined in the pleas for the roads to be reconstructed. “I drive though Seun Nwachi/Adeleke Streets regularly, especially when Council roundabout is blocked. And the residents don’t stop up from passing, so we beg the chairman and everyone concerned to repair this road. It is a major by-road that eases the stress of our journey,” he said.

  • How Lado is galvanising non-serving APC’s zoning plan

How Lado is galvanising non-serving APC’s zoning plan

The zoning of the 10th National Assembly Presiding Officers by the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been received with mixed feelings.

However, one group that was proactive in calling on the APC to zone the position of Senate President to the Southsouth and that of Deputy to the Northeast is the APC Non-Serving Senators Group convened by Senator Basheer Lado.

The Group made up of 77 ex-Senators from the Second to the Fourth Republics at its inaugural meeting in Abuja urged the leadership to zone the office to Southsouth for the purpose of fairness, equity, and justice.

Speaking during the meeting, Lado enjoined the leadership of the party to pick  Akpabio as President and Senator Barau Jibrin as his deputy.  He noted that the National Assembly required experienced and level-headed leaders as presiding officers to calm down the current tension in the country.

“We believe that, in the spirit of equity, fairness, political expedience and following extensive consultations with stakeholders, hereby express our total support for the zoning of the position of the President of the 10th Senate, to the Southsouth geo-political zone. We also affirm our unfettered support for the position of the President of the 10th Senate who also doubles as the Chairman of the National Assembly to be conferred on  Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio.

“The position of Senate President represents the third position in the hierarchy of our current democratic dispensation. This position carries considerable weight in discharging vital constitutional responsibilities and for charting the right course for our national development. It is also important that the holder of such a position enjoys the confidence and support of the party leadership and that of his peers as Senator Godswill Akpabio undoubtedly does. With this same spirit of fairness, we also affirm our solid support that the position of Deputy President of the 10th Senate is conceded to  Senator Barau I. Jubrin, representing Kano North Senatorial Zone.

“It is our conviction that a diverse and united legislative leadership is critical to good governance. At a trying period in our nation’s political history, the National Assembly requires experienced and level-headed leaders at the helm of its affairs.”

The Non-Serving Senators Group also appealed to other aspirants to support Akpabio and Barau, saying: “In view of the above, we wish to respectfully appeal to all other aspirants to these key positions to kindly support our position by withdrawing their respective bids. We believe that their withdrawal and cooperation will reduce the acrimony that commonly characterises the jostle for power in the National Assembly amongst the geo-political zones this will go a long way in ensuring a peaceful and smooth take-off of the incoming administration.”

However, following the zoning of the offices by the APC’s NWC to the zones canvassed by the group and the endorsement of aspirants suggested by the 77 Non-Serving Senators, the group hailed the party’s hierarchy for heeding its call and reiterated its appeal to other aspirants to step down their ambitions in the interest of party cohesion and unity.

At its second session, Lado said: “As we are all aware, the APC’s NWC has endorsed the candidature and aspiration of Senator Godswill Akpabio as Senate President and Senator Barau Jibrin as Deputy Senate President. As politicians and beneficiaries of Nigeria’s democracy, we believe that the continued consolidation of Nigeria’s political maturity can only be sustained through Peace, Stability, Unity and Progress of the constituents that make up the entire country.

“Our support for the candidature of Senator  Akpabio from the South as Senate President and Senator Barau Jibrin from the North as Deputy Senate President indeed is to strike the needed political balance, ethnicity and religious diversity of Nigeria as one indivisible nation. As critical stakeholders, we assure the leadership of the APC, The President-elect, The Vice President-elect, Senator Godswill Akpabio and Senator Barau Jibrin of our unflinching commitment and support towards the actualization of this objective.

“We therefore respectfully, once again appeal to other aspirants to step down their ambition in the interest of national unity, peace, national stability of Nigeria and party cohesion. We believe strongly, Senator Akpabio and Senator  Jibrin at the helm of affairs in the 10th assembly will further compliment the administration of Distinguished Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senator Kashim Shettima in delivering good governance and democratic dividends, to all Nigerians.”

Basheer Lado’s Profile in Service: Senator  Lado represented Kano Central Senatorial District between 2011 and 2015. Between May and September 2021, he was appointed by ex-President Buhari to serve as director general of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP). During the campaigns for the 2023 general elections, he was one of the arrowheads of President Bola  Tinubu’s push in Kano State – a state where President Tinubu got the highest single votes of over 800,000. As a Senator, Lado influenced massive constituency projects for Kano Central Senatorial Zone.

Born on October 16, 1966, Lado is a renowned businessman and politician who was elected Senator for the Kano Central in 2011 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

. A man known for reactiveness and innovation, Lado has not only brought the 77 Non-Senators Serving Group together, he told them of what to do to make the party succeed in its quest to enthrone the leadership of the 10th Senate.

The 77 APC Non-Serving senators were the first to openly call on the leadership of the party to zone the position of Senate President to Southsouth and that of Deputy Senate President to the Northwest. The group under the impactful leadership of Lado has equally partnered with critical stakeholders and elder statesmen towards actualising their objective.

Prominent among them include former Governor of Ogun State, Chief Segun Osoba, Elder Tanko Yakasai and Archbishop John Praise Daniel of the Dominion International Churches.

At an enlarged meeting of the APC Non-Serving Senators Group and Stakeholders in Abuja, Osoba urged the ex-APC g senators to lobby other aspirants to ensure that the zoning of the position stands.

“I want to appeal to you on two issues. Let us all organise a serious lobby system by convening a meeting of all aspirants for the position of Senate President in the 10th Senate to make them see the reason why they should toe the line of the party. The party has decided on zoning and has zoned the positions. We cannot afford to start this government on another crisis. The fuel subsidy removal crisis is already there. Let us go back to our states and lobby our senators-elect to support the choice of the party. With this I believe we shall achieve our goal without any hitch,” Osoba said.

Former Senate President Ameh Ebute, called on all APC Senators-elect to respect the supremacy of the party as enshrined in its constitution. After reading a section of the APC’s Constitution that provides that the party is supreme, Ebute said: “The party is supreme. No member should oppose the constitution of the party and the position of its leadership. We should abide by the constitution of the party and the zoning of National Assembly leadership positions .”

Elder statesman Alhaji Tanko Yakasai said he had no doubts that Akpabio is qualified to hold the position of Senate President because of his pedigree.

“The time of paucity of qualified Nigerians is over many years ago. This is the reason for my difficulties in the task of giving a talk in a gathering like this. What made my task somewhat easier is the fact that we know the personality we are all talking about. The person is no other than one of the few among the multitudes of people we know who is privileged to occupy three important positions many of our compatriots will wish to occupy any time such an opportunity presents itself to them. The personality is no other than a one-time governor of his state, a one-time minister, and presently a senator-elect. He is popular, competent and amiable Senator Godswill Apkabio.

Senator Akpabio is now presenting himself for consideration and support to be elected the President of the Senate,” Yakasai said.

In his comment, Ambassador Godknows Igali said the Southsouth is grateful to the APC for zoning the position of Senate President to the South for the purpose of equity, fairness, and justice. “Let us move to lobby our colleagues to support the choice of the party to enable our new government to hit the ground running,” Igali said.

In his address at the session, Senator Lado said the enlarged meeting became imperative for the Forum to reaffirm its support for the party’s position that the President of the Senate and his deputy should come from the southern and northern parts as a measure of balancing and stabilizing our polity.

“We are equally convinced that there is a need now more than ever to support the party and strengthen its decision in this regard. We are convinced that a strong party capable of whipping its members into line stands a better chance to oversight its members in the executive and legislative branches of government and ensuring thereby that the party manifesto and governance philosophy are religiously observed and executed,” Lade said.

He added: “We were all witnesses to the dislocation that occurred when the legislators rebelled against the party and the president to install their own officers against the position of the party during the first four years of the immediate past administration and the last four years of the administration before it. Such a scenario immediately breeds an in-house opposition where the party works against itself. It does not bear stating that a lot of time and resources are usually lost in an effort to convince fellow party members to push forward with the programmers of the party. It is not an accident that democracies that are running well, including those on our continent, are democracies where party supremacy is respected and supported.

“Parties are organic structures that outlive periodic leaders who come and go with election seasons. They should therefore not be seen as a mere platform for winning elections and kicking down the ladder thereafter. Loyalty to the party in countries like South Africa, Ghana, Ethiopia, and many others on the continent is the beginning of political wisdom. APC members of the 10th National Assembly will be traveling a familiar route in Africa by putting the party first. A few African parliamentary leaders such as  Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, the leader of the National Assembly of South Africa, Alban Bagbin, the leader of the Parliament of Ghana,  Augustine Iyamurenye, the leader of the Parliament of Rwanda, and  Amason Kingi Jeffa, the leader of Kenya, are all put in positions by the ruling parties of those nations.

“As key players in our party and nation, we are also aware that, in addition to the need for political harmony, regional balancing, and respect for religious plurality, Senators  Akpabio and  Jibrin are not only ranking senators but also possess the necessary leadership skills.

With Senators Akpabio and  Jibrin in charge of the 10th Senate, there is no doubt that the National Assembly would provide the necessary synergy to President   Tinubu’s administration to ensure that all Nigerians benefit from good governance and democratic dividends. We, therefore, call on all you stakeholders to support this patriotic move. In the interest of Nigeria’s national stability, peace, and party cohesion, we equally request once again that other aspirants withdraw their candidacies.”

With Lado’s efforts at galvanizing a critical masses of stakeholders in support of the party position, it is safe to say that he has demonstrated the wisdom in the saying of Abraham Lincoln when he said don’t think of what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country.  In this wise, Lado in particular, and the 77 APC Non-Serving Senators, in general, have prioritised what they can do for the party and their country and not what the party can do for them.

Lawyer to Oborevwori: don’t make lopsided appointments

A lawyer and rights activist, Robinson Ariyo, has appealed to Delta Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, not to make appointments on ethnic or sectional lines

Speaking  in Warri South, he noted the Itsekiri seem to have been left out in sensitive appointments made by the new government.

“Several sensitive appointments have been made and while some ethnic groups have two or more, the Itsekiri do not have”.

He cited Section 14 (4) of the constitution which provides that “the composition of the Government of a state or any of the agencies of such Government, and the conduct of the affairs of the Government or such agencies shall be carried out in such manner as to recognise the diversity of the people within its area of authority and the need to promote a sense of belonging and loyalty among all the people of the Federation”.

The lawyer urged well-meaning Itsekiri leaders to close ranks and think beyond their personal interests.

“I have observed many influential Itsekiri sacrificing the communal for their personal interests giving the impression they are patriots; there is nothing that can be more deceitful. We must begin to think more of what we can do for the community than what we can do for ourselves.

“We cannot go to church every Sunday and sit on front row while the cardinal doctrine of Christianity; love thy neighbour as thy self does not resonate in us. We must begin to give effect to what we preach and claim to stand for.

“The level of hypocrisy in our land is unprecedented. Let us remember the last words of Late Dele Giwa; ‘No evil deed will go unpunished; any evil done by man to man will be redressed; if not now then certainly later; if not by man, then by God for the victory of evil over good is temporary’,” he concluded.    Robinson Ariyo, has appealed to the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, to refrain from making appointments along ethnic or sectional lines in his government.

Ariyo, who is also a public analyst made the call Tuesday, at Ubeji in Warri South council area of the state, while briefing newsmen.

He noted that the Itsekiris seem to have been left out in the number of sensitive appointments so far made by the new government.

Chief Ariyo asserted: “I am particularly disturbed that the allegory ‘Ukodo’, which the Governor assured Delta would be equitably shared appears to have left out a very critical ethnic nationality that contributes a chunk
