Garba lauds Guardiola over Man City’s Treble

    • *Excited over Nwachukwu, Olorunleke Super Eagles’ invitations

Coach Manu Garba has praised Manchester City’s Treble win under Pep Guardiola, adding the team’s total football style throughout the season was pleasing to the eyes.

On Saturday, Manchester City completed a unique treble by edging Inter Milan 1-0 to claim their first European Champions League trophy in a dominant season after earlier winning the English FA Cup and Premier League.

“ Congratulations to Manchester City,” Garba, a keen supporter of the Citizens, said.“I have a philosophy of how football should be played just like the Johan Cruyff ,Pep Guardiola and the Barcelona’s way.

“ But it has to be total football with freedom of movement in possession and out of possession but importantly the players must be technically, physically and tactically fit so that they can solve problems in game situations.

“A typical style with the all-conquering 2013 Golden Eaglets World Cup-winning team at UAE 2013 but with a little modification.:”

Meanwhile, Garba has described the invitation of former youth internationals Divine Nwachukwu and goalkeeper Ojo by coach Jose Peseiro for Super Eagles forthcoming AFCON 2023 qualifier against Sierra Leone as a welcome development, even as he favoured future call ups for his former fledging.

Both Olorunleke of Enyimba and Nwachukwu of Insurance joined Rivers United duo of goalkeeper

Victor Sochima and defender Chidiebube Duru of Rivers as the only four lucky players drafted from the Nigeria Premier League for the AFCON due to be played in Monrovia on June 18.

“At least three player from the 2019 U17 national team have so far been invited to the senior national team and it is good development,” Garba told Naija Info in Abuja. “ Apart from e Nwachukwu, Akin Amao and Tijjani Samson had at one point been invited to the super Eagles, and I expect the likes of Olakunle Olusegun to get a chance soon.”

The Golden Eaglets’ World Cup-winning coach of 2013 further enthused about the invitations of Olorunleke and goalkeeper Adeleye Adebayo who are in the motley crowd of players that had passed through his hands at the national team youth set up at the outset of their careers.

He said: “ We also have goalkeeper Adeleye Adebayo, who kept for the U17 team in 2017 and Ojo who part of my AFCON U20 Senegal 2015 winning team and the FIFA U20 World cup in New Zealand as well as Wilfred Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Samuel Chukwueze, Simon Moses and Taiwo Awoniyi who have played under me at one time or the other.”

Democracy Day: Tinubu urged to set up peace, reconciliation committee

The International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA) Monday urged President Bola Tinubu to set up a committee to reconcile Nigerians and ensure there is peace and unity across the country.

It made the call in commemoration of this year’s Democracy Day celebration.

African Director of the body, Ambassador John Metchie, who said this in a statement, commended the President for signing the Electricity Act 2023 into law, saying it would contribute to rapid infrastructure development of the country.

In addition, he expressed joy that the Act is in line with the Light-Up Umueri Project, his personal initiative which has been distributing solar-powered  energy to hundreds of households in the community.

He expressed hope that with the signing into law of the Electricity Act, the President would as well sign the Nigerian Hunters and Forest Security Service (NHFSS) Bill into law.

Metchie issued the statement in Dubai, United Arab Emirate (UAE) where he is scheduled for a meeting of the Global Eminent Peace Ambassadors to review decisions taken at the UN-Habitat Assembly meeting which took place last week in Nairobi, Kenya.

His words:”The highly contested 2023 presidential election in Nigeria shows that the country and its people have come to a consensus that democracy is the best form of government.

“However, that the election witnessed unprecedented level of hate speech and threat of violence, there is  need  for a committee for healing and national reconciliation.

“According to data available at the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), there were over 53 reported incidents of hate speeches during the 2023 general election.

“The hurting speeches were made by politically exposed persons including governors, lawmakers and community leaders and others. The speeches bruised a lot of individuals and groups across the country.

“For the administration of President Tinubu to achieve its set objectives, all hands must be on deck to support the efforts of the President. There must be a deliberate attempt by  government to carry all citizens along, irrespective of their ethnic, political and religious leanings.”

On the President’s assent to the Electricity Bill, Metchie said: “The law, which empowers states, firms and individuals to generate electricity is one of the best decisions of the federal government in recent times. The law satisfies the yearnings and aspirations of majority of Nigerians for the unbundling of some sectors of the nation’s economy, including electricity, education and police, among others.

“I am  hopeful that with the prompt action of the President in signing the Electricity Act into law less than two weeks of his assumption of office,  the NHFSS Bill Tinubu inherited from his predecessor, would also be assented to very soon.

“Apart from curbing the various crimes, signing the bill into law, would enable government recruit thousands of young men and women as hunters, which would help to solve the issue of acute unemployment, one of the most serious challenge facing the nation.”

  • Democracy Day: Senator Nwite Foundation hails ‘decisive’ Tinubu

Democracy Day: Senator Nwite Foundation hails ‘decisive’ Tinubu

Nigeria would not make any realistic progress in her democratic journey, should systemic failures that enable divisiveness, nepotism, and avarice be allowed to continue without decisive action by the Federal Government, Senator Polycarp Nwite Foundation for Democratic Accountability (SPNFDA) has said.

The foundation also congratulated President Bola Tinubu, on his inauguration.

. As the Chief celebrator of this year’s June 12 Democracy Day, Tinubu is reminded of the spirit of togetherness and oneness of purpose that brought Nigerians of different backgrounds and leanings together in the Pro-Democracy movement of the 90s which helped to actualise the present democratic dispensation.

The nation’s unity, prosperity, and welfare of its peoples is the single most important task of President Tinubu’s government. It said.

The foundation, named after the late Third Republic Senator Polycarp Nwite, Democracy advocate and former Senior Presidential aide who, like President Tinubu was incarcerated by the military junta, during the June 12, 1993 political crisis, made these assertions in a statement in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State by its Executive Director, Mr. Michael Nwite, to mark Democracy Day.

The June 12, 1993 presidential election, which was won by late businessman MKO Abiola, but annulled by the military administration of Gen. Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB), was adjudged to be the most transparent election in the history of Nigeria. Since then, elections in Nigeria have been fraught with ethnic and religious tensions accompanied by increasing mistrust in our democratic institutions.

According to the statement, democracy in its purest form only exists to serve the best interest of the people, in an equitable, just, transparent and unifying manner, that enables trust and engenders patriotism and pride in nationhood; and belief in democratic practice and leadership.”

Nwite said : “We are absolutely convinced and confident that President Tinubu, being one of the courageous fighters for the enthronement of Democracy in Nigeria, as the current man in the driving seat of the nation’s democratic leadership, is not only conversant with the democratic principles, norms and nuances, but he is also willing and courageous enough to lead Nigeria to the future that would abhor divisiveness, fight nepotism, ethnic and religious bigotry, government indifference and insensitivity to the plight of the people and glaring injustice of the unequal distribution of opportunities and commonwealth of the nation.

“We are most glad, and I believe that our late father, Senator Nwite would’ve shared the same sentiments, were he to be alive, that President Tinubu, who he fondly called ‘Bola’,, now has the opportunity to fix Nigeria for the good of the people, in a democratic setting, as they had dreamt about, both in the tranches and in a detention camp at Alagbon Close, Lagos State, where they were next-door cell mates in the dark days of military dictatorship.

“The tough decisions President Tinubu has made right from his first day are indicative of a President who will lead from the front and make tough calls for the overall good of the people.

“Nigeria deserves a leader that will be bold and decisive in policy formulation, implementation and declarations that guarantee democratic dividends and accountability to the Nigerian people.

“Today, as we remember and celebrate our Heroes of Democracy, both dead and alive, we urge President Tinubu to urgently take decisive steps to fight corruption, criminality, and the intractable insecurity challenges across the nation, because we are of the opinion that no system of government, would make any meaningful progress in a situation characterised by multidimensional insecurity, fear, and despondency, as we have in the nation at the moment.”

The Foundation implored the President to also take decisive action in education, health, and electricity power generation/distribution to essentially curb unproductivity, youth unemployment, and current mass migration to foreign lands, in search of better livelihood.

Senator Nwite, was a former Nigeria Ambassador to Botswana, a Senior Special Assistant to President Umaru Yar’Adua and also a frontline member of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), a broad coalition of Nigerians, formed in May 1994 to fight for the enthronement of civil rule in Nigeria.

Security: Ogun monarch donates 25 acres of land to Navy

To ensure permanent naval presence and sustain security tempo within Oto-Awori and environs, the Olota of Ota kingdom, Dr. Abdulkabir Obalanlege, at the weekend donated 25 acres of land  to the Nigerian Navy.

The monarch said he made the personal donation to the NN following the service’s complaint weeks ago that its Music School premises in Ota had become small to accommodate administrative and residential quarters of personnel.

He expressed hopes that the land would not only be put to good use but would ensure that the NN’s presence in the community was permanent which would translate to improved security.

“The land was a gift  to me and in turn I am handing it over to the navy because I know your presence here will secure our community and our youths will also learn a lot from the navy,” said the monarch.

He thanked the family that gave him the land, adding that the survey plan and other documents would be handed over to the navy as soon as possible.

Receiving the land on behalf of the NN, Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Naval Training Command (NAVTRAC), Rear Admiral Patrick Nwatu, said the Special Boats Service (SBS) would put the land to immediate use pending when a permanent decision was reached on its development.

He said: “We have Nigeria Navy School of Music here in Ota, which has gained global reputation. It has represented the country in several events across the world and noting the pitiable condition of their present abode, our first intent is to have a more befitting place where we can have full fledged barracks, administrative quarters and offices beyond  the current one. “We are mindful of the location of the land we have here today and the fact that it will still require some budgeting and government’s attention to be drawn to this place so that we can optimize the intentions for which this good gesture is made. But amongst us, we have the Commander of the Special Boats Services, an elite force established by the NN.

“They will come quickly to find out immediate operational use for the place. Ultimately, we hope with appropriate budgeting and attention of government drawn to this facility, we will identify the most pragmatic route in. We might not necessarily have to follow this one that is here now, I’m sure if we do proper survey of the environment, we would be able to see alternative areas and how we can access the town from different angles that will be faster and safer for everybody…’
