Onyema: Nigeria’s sporting heroes deserve honours

Air Peace CEO Allen Onyema has been in the news lately for different reasons- from airlifting stranded Nigerians from different hotspots across Africa with the latest being from the civil war-torn Sudan as well as his stance on the Nigeria Air imbroglio. The University of Ibadan-trained lawyer and serial businessman here shares his days as a school boy athlete and why Nigeria’s sporting heroes should never be forgotten, Oluwamayomikun Orekoya reports.

Allen Onyema is a man of many facets- a lawyer, an astute business man, an entrepreneur, a humanitarian, a philanthropist and a sportsman.

As a philanthropist, Onyema’s Air Peace, a leading airline in Nigeria, in conjunction with the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) will on July 28 unveil a Wall of Fame in honour of ex-athletes who sacrificed for Nigeria on many fronts in the past.

The Wall of Fame is being organized in honour of the athletes who travelled to Olympic Games in 1976 in Montreal, Canada and were ordered home at the eve of the games after Nigeria led a boycott of the games by African countries due to the Apartheid policy in South Africa at the time.

The occasion will also be used to honour the historic 1980 Africa Nations Cup- winning team.

Recall that Nigeria lead 29 mostly African countries to boycott the Montreal Games when the International Olympic Committee refused to ban New Zealand after its national rugby team had earlier toured Aparthied South Africa in 1976 in defiance of the United Nations’ calls for a sporting embargo.

The then Military Head of State, Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo, order the Nigerian contingent back home eight days after arriving the Canadian city for the Games.

It was a bitter blow for the athletes as some of them were in the best sporting shape of their lives with hopes of getting medals after impressive performances in tournaments prior to the Games. One of a contender for medals was Charlton Ehizuelen, who was the world leader in the long jump event.

Speaking at a recent media parley in Lagos to unveil plans to honour these worthy former footballers and athletes, the former university football star said he was moved by their selfless patriotism, adding that this was not a publicity stunt for Air Peace or himself as many detractors are claiming but to show the former stars that their sacrifices were not in vain.

“Nigeria led that boycott of the Olympics on the eve of the Olympics,” he said. “Others has arrived Montreal, settled in their hotel rooms and were preparing for the opening ceremony the next morning and the call came that your nation had boycotted the event.

“These athletes in absolute show of respect for their country packed their bags and baggages, entered the next plane and came home. Fighting for a cause, how many people would do that today?

“Those who did it before were not honored so how many people would obey such call. They will say this is the time to japa (run away) . If you do it now nobody will listen to you.

“Those athletes would have disobeyed the country and stayed in Montreal to participate in the Olympics if it was today.”

On the 1980 African Cup of Nations conquering Green Eagles, Onyema said it was imperative to honour the team because of the joy they brought to millions of home in Nigeria, adding that the team’s contribution to nation building and nationalism should not go unrecognized.

“How about those who won the African Cup of Nations the first time for our country in 1980. Some of them, if you see them you won’t believe what you are seeing. Such National heroes, no country forgets such heroes.

“What they did brought the country together. I still remember as a kid seeing President Shagari at the national stadium even waving. He was in the crowd. The country became one.

“Anything that could be done to make this country live a life that would transcend our ethnicity, and religion I would encourage and everyone should encourage it too. That is why I think that honoring those Nigerians.”

Onyema identified the revival of school sports as the panacea for the declining fortune of sports in Nigeria, urging government, corporate organisations and philanthropists to revive sports in schools across the country.

He also highlighted the problem of inadequate sporting facilities for most secondary schools to support the practice of sports, adding that secondary school footballers of his school days could match the present crop of international players toe-to-toe today.

“Those days used to be tough, secondary school games those days used to be tough.

“I remember when I played, they even killed one of our secondary school boys when government college went to play federal government college. It used to be tough.

“Secondary school teams in the 70’s would defeat our national team now. The present national team will be nowhere near secondary school teams of yesteryears. I am not talking about clubs, you heard when they beat Canadian club 3-0.

“These days, secondary schools are found in two-storey building, no compound, no playground, nobody is protective of the child, nobody allows their children to experience the street life because of the cities we found ourselves.

“I want to call on the government to look into sport to create jobs. If they can invest in sport, make it safe for people to go and be great, we would bring back that followership.”

A keen sportsman in his younger years, Onyema fondly remembers sneaking out to play football behind his parents back, as they thought sports was for unserious people.

Despite his parents lack of support, Onyema would go on to the top 100 meters sprinter for his school, represent University of Ibadan at the NUGA games, play in the Oyo state division with NISER and have a stint with Benin City giants Insurance when he was a undergoing his mandatory National Youth Service.

“I started doing sport right from Primary School around the street and in Government College, I was doing athletics too; playing football. As a secondary school student, I was mostly down for 100 meters race and in 1984, I was the best athlete, I was the sportsman of the year. I played for UI, NISER. During youth service, I was with Insurance so I have been in and around sports.”

“I was not encouraged by my parents. In fact, I was being treated like a very unserious person. Each time I was to play a match, I used to sneak to do that.

“My uncle and parents were not happy that I was playing football so I was doing those things for leisure. Even when I was in UI, I was playing for NISER, a state division , one big team then in Oyo State and we were doing very well. Sometimes, radio stations used to air our matches then and I never liked when radio stations mentioned my name because my parents would not be happy with me. If anybody heard it and told my parents, I would be in trouble.”

Asides football, Onyema said he was also a sprinter and would have been a world champion had he pursued the sport. According to him, as a school boy in Government College, Ughelli, he was running 10. Secs and was ranked higher than Mike Oyiki who would later represent Nigeria at the 110 hurdles event in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.

“I love the game. I would have been one of Nigeria’s best athlete in 100 meters today if I had pursued it. Moses Oyiki and I were both in Government College, I was number 1 and Oyiki used to be number 4 but he represented Nigeria in the Olympics. I was doing about 10. something seconds as a secondary school student in 100 meters. The coach was a Nigerian and he believed I was going to be the next Olympic champion but I was not getting any encouragement from the family so, I just went off and studied law. When we were coming to UI the following year for 1986 NUGA games, everyone was saying oh “Gaddafi” would dust everybody, they used to call me Gaddafi and when they came, I had knee injury at the time so I didn’t participate. But if I had taken athletics, I would have been a world champion. No doubt about that.”

Despite not pursuing his athletic career further, Onyema said he does not have any regrets.

“I believe that where I am today is where God wants me to be  so I cannot regret but still, I feel like I should have been out there, doing what I love,” he noted. “These days, I still play table tennis and I play so well. God has blessed me, maybe God chose this way for me so I don’t regret.”

Israeli surgeons reattach boy’s head to his neck after internal decapitation

SURGEONS at Hadassah Medical Centre, Jerusalem, have reattached a 12-year-old boy’s head to his neck after a serious accident in which he was hit by a car while riding his bicycle.

Suleiman Hassan, a Palestinian from the West Bank, was airlifted to Hadassah hospital’s trauma unit in Ein Kerem, where it was determined that the ligaments holding the posterior base of his skull were severely damaged, leaving it detached from the top vertebrae of his spine.

The condition, bilateral atlanto occipital joint dislocation, is commonly known as internal or orthopedic decapitation, according to The Times of Jerusalem.

Nigeria, others affected as UK announces increase in visa fees, health surcharge

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, has announced an increase in visa application fee paid by immigrants.

He also said the surcharge paid for the state-funded National Health Service (NHS) by immigrants will “increase significantly”.

The announcement is coming a few weeks after the United States embassy said it is increasing fees for processing non-immigrant visa (NIV) applications.

The US embassy, according to a statement on its website, said the new fees for various visa categories will be implemented from June 17, 2023.

Sunak explained that this was “entirely right” as these fees have not been increased recently.

He said: “If we’re going to prioritise paying public sector workers more, that money has to come from somewhere else because I’m not prepared to put up people’s taxes and I don’t think it would be responsible or right to borrow more because that would just make inflation worse

“So, what we have done are two things to find this money. The first is, we are going to increase the charges that we have for migrants who are coming to this country when they apply for visas and indeed something called the immigration health surcharge (IHS), which is the levy that they pay to access the NHS.

“All of those fees are going to go up and that will raise over £1 billion. So, across the board visa application fees are going to go up significantly and similarly for the IHS.”

According to Sunak, this move will have no effect on inflation because there would be no new borrowing or spending to fund the increases.

He said the government believes it is appropriate given that the costs have risen since the last hike.

    • IMF lauds Tinubu on petrol subsidy removal palliatives
    • Nwifuru increases Ebonyi workers’ salaries, orders recruitment of 1,454 staff

STAKEHOLDERS in the Nigerian economy yesterday threw their weight behind President Bola Tinubu following his Thursday declaration of a state of emergency on food security.

Frontline parent body of farmers in the South West, Agbekoya, the Oluwo of Iwo, Osun State, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi and a professor of Food Science and Technology, Christine Ikpeme, all hailed the President’s move yesterday.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) in a separate statement declared its support for the federal government’s palliatives to Nigerians to help them cope with economic constraints arising from the removal of petrol subsidy.

Presidential Adviser on Special Duties, Communication and Strategy, Dele Alake, who spelt out details of the state of emergency on Thursday in Abuja, said the initiative entails, among others, all year round farming, creation of special purpose vehicles, especially the commodity board, to liberalise the food production value chain and the immediate activation of land-banks across the country.

The Agbekoya Society of Nigeria, the parent body of the Agbekoya Farmers Association, in a statement by its President, Dr. Adegbenro Ogunlana Agbekoya, and the Secretary-General, Chief Kamorudeen Okikiola, in Lagos commended the president’s vision and proactive measures to mitigate the food price crisis in the country.

The group described the initiative as a testament to Tinubu’s commitment to fostering a prosperous and resilient agricultural sector.

It said by implementing measures that addressed the root causes of rising food prices, the President had further demonstrated his dedication to promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

It added that it also demonstrated the President’s commitment to ensuring the availability of affordable, high-quality food for all.

It said: “The provision acknowledges the importance of collaborative efforts between the government and the agricultural community to address the underlying factors affecting food prices.

“It reflects an inclusive approach that fosters partnerships and encourages dialogue between all stakeholders involved in the agricultural value-chain.

“Moreover, Tinubu’s recognition of the agricultural sector’s significance and his commitment to its growth and development sends a positive message to farmers, agribusinesses, and other key players in the industry.

“This will further boost confidence and encourage investment in agricultural innovation, infrastructure and capacity building, ensuring long-term sustainability and competitiveness.”

The group offered to collaborate closely with the government in implementing and fine-tuning the process.

It added: “The commitment shown by the President demonstrates his determination to foster an environment that promotes agricultural productivity, market stability and affordable food prices.”

It asked all stakeholders to join hands in implementing the provision effectively, believing that it wouldn’t be business as usual for the agricultural cabal which had, in previous governments, usually hijack the process.

    Oluwo: It’s a timely action

Speaking to The Nation yesterday on the phone, the Oluwo said the President’s action could not have come at a better time than now “because anybody that wants to work needs adequate strength (food) to work.”

“It is really a good one and I really commend him for that,” he said

The policy, according to Oba Akanbi, “will protect farmers and teach herders about animal husbandry.”

He was of the view that the move would go a long way in taking care of the frequent clashes between farmers and herders, saying: “We have been living together with the Fulani for over 500 years, especially in Iwo here.

Read Also: AIO President tasks insurers on food security in Africa

“We have intermarried; you can’t even know who is a Fulani or who is a Yoruba.”

But he advised government to involve traditional rulers in the implementation of the policy.

His words: “It is not something that the federal government alone can do by itself. The government has to call the traditional rulers to call farmers and herders and talk to them, give them hope and the farmers will feel secure because the only threat to farmers are herders’ cows and the Fulani too wants his cows to feed because he doesn’t want them to die.

“The only grass that is available during the dry season is the farmers’ crops. So we have a problem and the only way to fix this problem is to listen to the advice of traditional rulers, that is to educate the herders so there will be security for the farmers.

Prof Ikpeme to FG: Let real farmers, not politicians, do the job

Prof. Christine Ikpeme of the University of Calabar advised the federal government to share the 500,000 hectares of land earmarked for the policy to real farmers and not those she labeled political farmers.

Ikpeme who spoke on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily said subsidised farming inputs should be given alongside the land.

“The land issue is a good step but then (regarding) the modalities of the farmers getting this land, there shouldn’t be any bottlenecks. The actual farmers should get it, not political farmers,” Ikpeme said.

“It all depends on how the farmers are going to get this land without undue stress, without undue bottlenecks for them to access these lands.

“Most times, the government means very well, but the implementation sometimes is wrong. We just wish and pray that actual farmers would get the land and the farming inputs that would be given.”

She added that there must be money for seedlings for the farmers, noting that the rural sector has to be given money for farming inputs at a highly subsidised rate.

Food policy good if well-implemented —Chukwu, Adamu

The Chief Executive Officer at Cowry Asset Management Limited, Johnson Chukwu, said the move must be backed by conscious efforts geared towards addressing the prevailing insecurity situation in the nation’s food belts.

“For me, the key thing is that we need to look at the root cause of the insecurity issue in the country,” he said.

He added: “It’s not because we don’t have arable or fertile land or we are suffering from any drought. It’s principally because we are suffering from insecurity, particularly around the major food baskets in the country in the Northeast, Northwest and the Northcentral.

“If the President wants to incentivise food insecurity, he needs to fight the insurgency in those areas mentioned.

“Once we bring these regions of the country back into peaceful conditions, I believe we should have no problem with food production and availability of food.”

Also commenting on the new charge on food security, Dr. Kabiru Adamu, Managing Director of Beacon Consulting Limited, said: “I think it’s a very interesting development. It’s a long-term plan and I’m hoping that under that long-term plan there will be low-hanging fruit that would be achieved.

“We do have grain reserves for example. I’m not sure. I haven’t seen the whole content. Has there been a directive for those reserves to be released for food to be made available to the people?

“The long-term plan would be securing, for instance, everything that has to do with our requirements for food in the country so that at least the average Nigerian is able to afford food.”

IMF backs Tinubu on subsidy removal palliatives

Hailing Tinubu on subsidy removal palliatives yesterday, the IMF said the move would help beneficiaries cope with economic constraints arising from the removal of petrol subsidy.

IMF’s director, communication department, Julie Kozack, said the unification of the exchange rate regime was also a right step in the right direction.

According to Kozack, increasing well-targeted social spending would be critical to cushioning the impact of the removal of fuel subsidies on vulnerable citizens.

She added that strengthening revenue mobilisation through tax administration reforms was also essential to create fiscal space, reduce vulnerabilities and put public debt on a sound footing.

Kozack also stated that inflation in Nigeria is expected to increase in the coming months.

“Therefore, as a result, fiscal and monetary policy tightening, including reducing Central Bank financing of government fiscal deficits are needed to prevent a further escalation of inflation,” she said.

Nwifuru increases workers’ salary, orders recruitment of 1,454 employees

Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru yesterday gave approval for a pay rise for civil servants in the state to cushion the effects of the fuel subsidy removal.

He also gave the go ahead for the recruitment of 1,454 fresh hands to fill vacant positions in the civil service.

Information and Orientation Commissioner Jude Okpor told reporters that the decisions were taken at this week’s meeting of the state executive council.

Each civil servant will receive a rise of N10,000.

The commissioner also said the council set up committee to look into communal crises across the state with a view to resolving them while the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Grace Umezuruike was mandated to look into the finances of the  Ebonyi State  University (EBSU).

Ex-Man City player Mendy cleared off rape charges

Ex-Manchester City footballer Benjamin Mendy has been cleared of raping a woman and attempting to rape another. The 28-year-old was accused of attacking a 24-year-old woman at his £4m mansion in Mottram St Andrew, Cheshire in October 2020.

Mr Mendy was also accused of the attempted rape of another woman, aged 29, who said he had also molested her at his home two years before.

It comes after he was cleared of six rapes at an earlier trial in January.

The France international broke down in tears as the not guilty verdicts were read out by the jury foreman following a three-week trial at Chester Crown Court.

The jury of six men and six women deliberated for about three hours and 15 minutes before reaching their conclusion.

But jurors failed to reach verdicts on two counts of rape and attempted rape, prompting a re-trial.

During the trial Mr Mendy told how he had slept with more than 10,000 women.

Benjamin Aina KC, prosecuting, claimed he had enjoyed parties at his home and on two occasions “took advantage” of female guests, while his wealth and celebrity status turned him into a man not used to being told “no”.
