Guinness World Records warns against unapproved attempts

The Guinness World Records (GWR) has warned Nigerians making concerted efforts to break various records in different categories.

GWR announced this in a cautionary remark during a Twitter exchange with a Nigerian who tweeted at them to inform the body about her intentions to attempt two record-breaking feats.

The warning is coming days after the world records body advised Nigerians to apply for confirmation before attempting to break any record.

After Hilda Baci’s 100-hour cook-a-thon challenge in May, many other Nigerians caught the syndrome and started off a deluge of record-breaking attempts.

In an official statement on its website, GWR confirmed Baci as the record holder for the longest cooking marathon (individual) with an impressive time of 93 hours and 11 minutes.

Another upcoming artiste, identified as Sugartee, had proposed a 72-hour kiss-a-thon, but the Ekiti State government banned the upcoming event, citing moral reasons.

Mixed reactions have since trailed the record-breaking attempts on social media, with some criticising the development.

GWR said: “Please, enough with the record-a-thons.

“We love the record-a-thon enthusiasm but we would suggest getting a record title approved by our team before attempting these marathon records!”

    ‘Be ruthless against sit-at-home enforcers’

Traditional rulers in Enugu state have urged Governor Peter Mbah to be more ruthless in flushing out kidnappers and enforcers of the sit-at-home order.

The royal fathers praised Mbah for his laudable efforts at ensuring security, and also promised their continued commitment and support.

The monarchs converged yesterday on the House of Assembly Complex for an interactive session with the governor. They stressed that kidnapping and sit-at-home were alien to the Igbo people, adding that the illegal Monday sit-at-home did not represent the true identity of what the Igbo people were.

They also admonished Mbah to deploy joint security operatives across different communities to reinforce the people’s confidence in going about their legitimate businesses.

Some of the monarchs who spoke on behalf of their senatorial districts were Igwe Simon Osisi Itodo, Igwe RSN Eze, Igwe Lawrence Agubuzu, Igwe Godwin Madu, Igwe Julius Nnaji, Igwe Greg Ugwu, among others.

Mbah told the royal fathers that the meeting was convened to appreciate  their support during the election, and to brief them on the security measures taken so far to rid the state of criminal elements, and attract the promised investments.

The governor also stressed that the only way to make the state the premier destination for investment, eradicate poverty, build theme parks, attract over three million tourists yearly, provide employment for the youths, and move the state’s gross domestic product from its current $4.4 to $30 billion, was by ending insecurity posed by hoodlums hiding under the guise of sit-at-home to hurt the economy and inflict pain on the citizens.

2024 NPFL champions to earn N150m jackpot

    • *GTI earmarks N5b for 2023/24 season

Champions of Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) in the forthcoming 2023/24 season will be rewarded with a princely sum of N150 million courtesy of Nigeria Premier League (NPL) strategic partner, GTI Asset Management and Trust Limited through its novel The Nigeria Football Fund (TNFF).

This much was revealed by the Group Managing Director of GTI, Abubakar Lawal in a wide ranging interview with NationSport, adding that his investment outfit has already projected about N5b towards the execution of next NPFL season after expending close to about N1b to the recently concluded abridged season won by Enyimba International Football Club of Aba.

As the 2023 champions, Enyimba smiled home with a record N100m in prize money aside the NPFL trophy but Lawal said there would be an upward review of not less than 50 percent increase in prize money for the next NPFL champions.

“We want to create a national asset with the NPFL,” Lawal assured.“ Last season, we took care of a whole lot of things including the referees indemnities and other officials real time; took care of production and took care of broadcast because we put the NPFL on television and took care of other logistics in the course of that maiden abridged season.

“We put a value on the title and gave the winner, Enyimba N100m which is a clear departure of what was obtainable in the past.

“ In fact, I can tell you for free that we are going to give N150m to the winner and we would graduate it down like that to the 2nd and 3rd positions like that,”

According to the GTI boss, about N1b was spent on the abridged season that saw Enyimba, Remo Stars and Rivers United occupying the top three positions but he reckoned there would be a bigger financial outlay come next season as the NPFL would expectedly run its full circle.

“ We spent close to N1b to put together the abridged season but we would spend conservatively five billion naira for this coming season starting in August,” Lawal further said.

“There is so much going in that space because of the structure we have built through The Nigeria Football Fund(TNFF) that is governed by the Nigeria Security & Exchange Commission and this is not only about GTI money ; because we have a structure through the TNFF that attracts (financial) liquidity into that space.

“ The beauty of it is that all the naira and dollars are being accounted for in a transparent manner because every investor is expecting a return on his investment because this is big business.

“ There is so much creativity and spending going into the league next season and as I said we are going to commit five billion spending into the NPFL in this coming season,” Lawal added.

The government said this in Ilorin at the 6th Students Leadership Summit and Empowerment of the Kwara State University Students’ Union, affirming that Prof Akanbi was exceptionally upright.

Chief Press Secretary to the Kwara State Governor, Rafiu Ajakaye, who represented the Governor at the occasion, said Prof. Akanbi was a team player that played active roles in transforming KWASU.

“Everything we’ve heard this afternoon revolves around the excellent qualities of the Vice Chancellor Prof Mohammad Akanbi.
He was a strong and value-driven administrator. He was a fine representative of the youth constituency as one of the youngest vice chancellors in the country,” he said.

KWASU Students’ Union found Prof Akanbi worthy to be honoured at this year’s Leadership Summit in view of his contributions to the University, with the theme: “A Colossus that Bestrode the Planet Earth: The Life and Time of Prof MM Akanbi.

Prof Akanbi was appointed by Governor AbdulRazaq in April, 2020, and he died two and a half years after.

“The government is really proud of his leadership and his vision for the University. He was sure-footed, firm, courageous, and kind. He was also a team player. It is rare to have students describe an administrator in those words in the same sentence”.

He said for students to speak good about the late Vice Chancellor means a lot, urging the youths, especially students of the institution, to emulate his values and virtues.

The question is: what legacy am I leaving behind? And what would you be remembered for?, Ajakaye queried, praying to God to continue to bless the soul of the deceased.

They were killed in a shootout at Uga, Aguata local government area last night, while some others escaped with bullet wounds.

Three vehicles, two automatic pump action guns, 11 live cartridges, and a bag containing a walkie-talkie, one cell phone and incriminating items were recovered from suspected kidnappers.

The above details were revealed by Anambra State Police Commissioner, Aderemi Adoye, while briefing newsmen at the command’s headquarters in Amawbia, Akwa, last night.

Accoridng to the police boss, the kidnapped woman was rescued at Ichida bus stop, along the Ichida-Igboukwu expressway at about 8:30pm in collaboration with local vigilantes.

He said preliminary information revealed that the eight-member gang operating with two vehicles a Grey Highlander SUV and a white Lexus 350, abducted the victim in her Highlander jeep.

“The occupants started shooting sporadically to escape police screening. The joint forces engaged the armed hoodlums, neutralized two of the gang members.

“Meanwhile, in an intense chase by the joint forces, the deadly gang abandon the white Lexus 350 jeep and took to their heels.

The CP called on operators of public and private hospitals to admit but report anyone with bullet wounds or related injuries to the nearest police station.

“We’re not in the habit of telling criminals to relocate from the state. We won’t create problems for neighbouring states. We have what it takes to deal with them here squarely unless they turn a new leaf.

“When we sustain operations, we don’t need anyone to advise them, they’ll advice themselves.

“For cross-border crimes, we’re synergising with other states, including sharing intelligence. We’ll make the entire Southeast too hot for criminal activities so they don’t have any hiding place.

“But we want to minimise loss of lives as much as possible because life is sacred. It’s foolishness to engage in unprofitable enterprise that will end in death,” said Aderemi.
