Customs records 310% increase in revenue, generates N93.3m

The Ogun 1 Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Idiroko has said it generated N93.3 million revenue in the first half of this year.

It said the amount showed a 310 per cent increase when compared to the  N29.94 million revenue generated within the same period last year.

Area Controller, Comptroller Bamidele Makinde, disclosed this on Tuesday at a press conference at Idiroko, Ogun State, adding that the revenue was generated from import duties, auction sales of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), and scrap vehicles seized from smugglers between January and June.

The cumulative Duty Paid Value (DPV) of the seized goods, he said, was N1,313,628,488.

He said: “The revenue generated from January to June last year was N29,940,146.50, compared to this year’s revenue of N93,301,130.00 which is about 310% increase.

“In curbing smuggling, the command during the period under review made a total seizure of 392 items which comprises 5,048 pieces of used tyres; 390 bales of used clothing; 61 units of vehicles, including 5 luxury buses; 173,975 litres of PMS (an equivalent of 5 tanker loads); 107 sacks and 1,595 wraps of cannabis sativa; 167 cartons of 100x100ml and 27 cartons of 200x100ml codeine syrup; and 22,526 bags of foreign parboiled rice of 50kg each (which is an equivalent of 37 trailer loads), among others.”

According to the Comptroller, the command was able to record the achievements through continuous stakeholder’s engagement and management; deployment of intelligence in all the operations across the state; and Improved discipline and total dedication to duty by officers.

Bamidele said the command was resolute in its fight  against smuggling of rice and other prohibited items in order to encourage local production in line with the federal government’s policy on local rice production.

Commanding operatives of the command for their resilience in combating smugglers, Bamidele warned the criminals to embrace legitimate livelihoods.

“We encouraged compliant traders by operating an open door policy and creating an enabling environment for trade to thrive.

“As part of our stakeholders’ engagement, we maintained a robust synergy with our sister security agencies and cordial community relations with our host communities,” he said.

Bayelsa poll: APC youths seek Ndiomu’s sack

Youths of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State have chided Interim Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Maj.-Gen. Barry Ndiomu (rtd), for his partisanship ahead of the November 11 governorship election.

The stakeholders, under the auspices of Bayelsa APC Integrity Forum (BAIF), called for Ndiomu’s arrest and prosecution for gross abuse of his office.

The youths specifically accused Ndiomu of deploying his office to work for the re-election of Governor Douye Diri.

Chairman of the forum, Ebiye Appah, in a statement yesterday, accused Ndiomu of ‘acting like an aide to Diri instead of focusing on his primary responsibility of promoting peace in the Niger Delta’.

Appah accused Ndiomu of deliberately lying and mischievously twisting facts about the amnesty status of the APC deputy governorship candidate, Joshua Macaiver, and subsequently leaking his reply to the SGF’s inquiries to the public.

He said: “Ndiomu’s failed action is targeted at casting aspersion on the Sylva/Maicaver governorship ticket to cause tension in APC and give undue advantage to his friend, Diri and the People Democratic Party (PDP).”

The youth leader challenged Ndiomu to deny allegations of him supporting presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar, and empowering card-carrying members of the PDP in his anti-APC campaign in Bayelsa and the Niger Delta.

Appah said: “We wonder also why confidential mail communication between his office and Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation would be leaked and made subject of pedestrian deliberations.

“We are not concerned about his obvious PDP ties, and the fact that he is former Governor Seriake Dickson’s kinsman. Our only concern is why he has consistently converted the PAP to an anti-APC apparatus, even made more evident in his overwhelming empowerment of PDP card-carriers, and his recent support of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar during the last presidential elections.

“The amnesty office is to keep peace in the Niger Delta and its development. The institution is not to further divide or glean partisan advantages.

“We urge the Department of State Service (DSS) to investigate leakages in communication between government agencies for such acts are as treasonable. We call for the immediate removal, prosecution and arrest of Ndiomu for leaking official government communication, and for turning the PAP to a mere empowerment scheme of the PDP.”

The legislators said there was a need for a doctor to be on the ground, especially in general hospitals, adding that if the issue is not addressed, the lives of millions of Nigerlites are at stake.

Mutfwang solicits NEMA’S support for Plateau IDPS

    • •Reiterates commitment to ending incessant attacks

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang has solicited for more support from National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs),  who suffered from the incessant attacks in Mangu Local Government Area of the State.

Mutfwang  made the call yesterday during a visit to the headquarters of National Emergency  Management Agency (NEMA), Abuja.

He said: “Before I even came into office, I knew that NEMA had always extended its goodwill to us when there was a storm in Mangu. We received that package and our people were very happy. Also, with the recent development that bothers on insecurity, we also received the goodwill of NEMA and it has gone a long way in addressing  some of the fall out of the security challenges.

“At the last count, we had IDPs in about 13 different  locations and it is unfortunate. Part of this visit is to brief Heads of Security Agencies on the true situation on the Plateau and to harvest  their goodwill to ensure that this challenge is brought to an end.

“Plateau is a multilingual, multi-religious state and we have always lived in peace with one another but in the last two to three months, there is a dimension in which it has taken. There are places which hitherto were quite peaceful and one of the places is my own Local Government Area Mangu. Before now, it was one of the safest places but now, it has come under serious siege.

“As a government, we are doing everything to reassure the people that we can still live together but some vested interests find a way of bringing  in mercenaries from outside who have attacked those communities. Their houses have been destroyed and their properties vandalised.

“Few of the communities which have managed to still farm, these insurgents come in the night and cut the maize which has already grown and if you can farm in Mangu, for example, it makes a significant contribution to food security in Nigeria and this year, there will be reduction in food production.”

He expressed appreciation to Mutfwang  for donating a befitting office for the smooth operations of the agency and said that it would aid their assessment of the situation for swift intervention.

  • Five tips on how to survive during flood

Five tips on how to survive during flood

Living in flooded areas can pose a threat to health and life. Even after preparing for flood by securing a flood insurance policy and setting up your home to reduce property damage from flood. There is more to do to ensure you and your family are safe.

    Escape flooded areas fast

In a flooding situation where the water level is increasing, make sure you evacuate that flooded area fast. Do not scramble about saving your valuables yet; instead, have your safety kits with you along with a means to listen to the latest developments on the flooding situation.

    Stay updated on flooding information

While escaping the flooded area, have with you a battery-powered radio to listen to updates on the situation. The agency responsible for responding to disasters in Nigeria is the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA. Keep your ears to the ground for alerts on areas to be avoided and directions to safety.

    Assume floodwater is dangerous

For your safety and that of your family assume areas with floodwater are dangerous. This is because the flood may have carried waste products like sewage or refuse. Flood water may contain oil which may explode when in contact with light. Some may even be charged with the electrical current; animals that have lost their habitat may be in the water too. So, avoid it as much as you can, including a moving one as you may not be able to survive the tide.

    Stay on high grounds

It is easy to drown in flooded areas as the depth cannot be determined prior to entering it. To avoid the hazards of floodwater, stay on high grounds. If the flood caught you in your home, stay abreast of the water by either ascending your staircase to the highest position; finding your way to the rooftop or arranging items to raise you higher in the water.

Avoid fallen electrical poles and wires

Avoid stepping on wires or moving over a fallen electrical pole. They may still be charged with electrical current, causing electrocution and perhaps, death.

The aforementioned are the first-aid tips to adopt before the emergency team in your locality arrives or the floodwater recedes.

  • Army rules out amnesty for bandits, terrorists

Army rules out amnesty for bandits, terrorists

The Chief of Army Staff Major General Taoreed Lagbaja has dismissed amnesty pleas for bandits and terrorists.

Lagbaja said the amnesty programme has failed to achieve its purpose in the past, adding that it gives criminals opportunity to regroup and attack defenceless citizens.

The COAS said this in Abuja when he received Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal on a courtesy visit.

He thanked the Governor for feedback on the activities of troops deployed in the State to restore peace.

Lagbaja said while the Zamfara terrain was difficult to navigate, he had directed the deployment of more platforms and release of more funds to reactivate unserviceable platforms to boost troops operations in the State.

He said the Zamfara crisis was a mix of many things such as the farmer herder clashes, ethnic confrontations and the quest for economic survival

He said the military would address concerns raised by the governor and other stakeholders.

The COAS said: “On insecurity being experienced in Zamfara state, just yesterday I tasked the Chief of military intelligence to think on ways to address the issue of Yan Sakai and other regional groups that operate in Zamfara State.

*We will not have a situation where some people constitute themselves into our law and just go into communities and kill children and defenseless women.

*Working in this with the state government and other critical stakeholders we can eliminate this outlook and reduce the insecurities of in the state by a significant percentage.

“So I want to appeal to you your Excellency that as we come up with our strategy to address the issue of the Yan Sakai and other regional groups, the state government should dispose to the implementation of the measures that we will recommend so that together we will address the activities of this criminal elements.

“We also have the issue of the amnesty program that has been instituted, and which have failed. The criminals agreements have proven to be incorrigible and so the issue of amnesty has created avenue for the groups to reorganized and launch attacks on defenseless citizens.”

  • JUST IN: Nigeria redeems US$500mn Eurobond

JUST IN: Nigeria redeems US$500mn Eurobond

Nigeria has redeemed her US$500 million Eurobond she issued in July 2013.

The Debt Management Office (DMO) in a statement on Wednesday night said: “This is part of a dual-tranche US$1 billion Eurobond for a tenor of ten (10) years at a coupon of 6.375% per annum”.

The DMO revealed that “Nigeria had previously redeemed a US$500 million Eurobond in July 2018, another US$500 million Eurobond in January 2021, and a US$300 million Diaspora Bond in June 2022. These, together with the USD500 million”.

According to the DMO, “the Eurobond redeemed today, brings the total amount of securities redeemed by Nigeria in the International Capital Market (ICM) to USD1.8 billion”.

By redeeming this volume of Eurobonds on their due dates the DMO argued that “Nigeria’s successful redemption of its Eurobonds and Diaspora Bond in the ICM over the past six (6) years is a demonstration of its strong debt management operations and planning”.

Redeeming a Eurobond means that Nigeria is repaying the principal amount of the bond along with any outstanding interest payments before or immediately upon the bond’s maturity date.

A Eurobond is a type of bond issued in a currency other than the currency of the country where it is issued. In this case, Nigeria issued a $1.8 billion Eurobond, which means it borrowed $1.8 billion from international investors by issuing bonds denominated in a foreign currency, such as the US dollar or the euro.

When Nigeria redeems a Eurobond, it uses its own funds or obtains new financing to repay the bondholders. Typically, a country redeems a Eurobond by utilizing its foreign exchange reserves, obtaining loans, or issuing new bonds. The repayment process involves returning the principal amount borrowed, along with any interest payments that have accrued (in this case 6.375 percent per annum).

The redemption of a Eurobond affects Nigeria’s total debt profile in several ways. Firstly, by redeeming the Eurobond, Nigeria reduces its overall debt obligations by the principal amount of $1.8 billion. This can help improve the country’s debt sustainability and reduce the burden of servicing the debt.

Secondly, redeeming a Eurobond may have implications for Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves. If the country uses its foreign exchange reserves to repay the bond, it could deplete its reserves or reduce the buffer it has to support the local currency and manage external obligations.

The redemption of a Eurobond can also impact Nigeria’s creditworthiness and borrowing costs. As Nigeria has successfully redeemed the Eurobond, it can enhance its reputation in international financial markets. This, in turn, may lead to improved investor confidence and potentially lower borrowing costs in the future.

It’s important to note that the specific details and implications of the redemption can vary depending on the terms and conditions of the Eurobond issuance and the overall economic and financial situation of Nigeria at the time of redemption.

  • Anambra community leaders petition Soludo over alleged threat

Anambra community leaders petition Soludo over alleged threat

The leadership of Umueri General Assembly (UGA) and dozens of prominent community leaders have petitioned Anambra State Government over alleged moves by some members of the community to cause a breach of peace, warning that such development may retard development in the area.
The petitioners claimed there are attempts to factionalise UGA leadership.

In a letter signed by 50 community leaders made up of 10 UGA executive members and 40 others, dated July 10, 2023 to Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, the petitioners unanimously passed a vote of confidence on the President General of UGA, Ambassador John Metchie and his deputy, Mr. John Udenze.

They dismissed an alleged vote of no confidence passed on Metchie and his deputy.

In refuting the purported vote of no confidence, the UGA executive members and other community leaders, drew the attention of Anambra State government to the achievements recorded by the UGA leadership since barely one year and three months since that Metchie took over the leadership of the Assembly.

Those that signed the 35-paragraph letter include Prof. Ugugua Ikpeze, Chief Frank Ibegbunam, Chairman, Ikenga Umueri, Elder Justin Uderika Morah, Chairman, Nneyi Umueri, Chief Chuma Nweke and Comrade Chinedu Ekweonu, among others.

The petition reads: “Having carefully reviewed the performance of the leadership of Umueri General Assembly (UGA) in the last one year and two months, we, the Executive and Members of the Assembly hereby pass a vote of Confidence on the President General, Ambassador Dr John Metchie and his Deputy Mr. John Udenze.

“You may wish to recall that Chief John Metchie became the PG of UGA following an overwhelming victory in the election that took place in March 2022 and was officially sworn in April them same year.

“In the last one year and two months of his administration, Umueri has witnessed unprecedented, massive physical and human development as has never been seen in the history of the community and UGA leadership.

“Among areas that have experienced real revolutions are Security which Metchie has used his position as the Deputy Commander General of the Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Service (NHFSS) to restructure and has also recruited many Umueri youths as members of the Service, who have continued to ensure that the community is safe, all day round.

“This has also enhanced the job of the Umueri Vigilante Network which now works round the clock.

“Also, to make the job of security easier, the Vigilante Network has been provided with walkie talkies, security gadgets, admissible weapons and operational vehicles for intra and inter-community surveillance, leading to better understanding and harmonious relationship with our neighbours, especially Aguleri.

“There are also security hotlines for community members to reach operatives and UGA exco members any time of the day.

” The leadership of UGA under Chief Metchie has installed CCTV facilities covering all parts of Umueri which has greatly enhanced security of lives and property of our people as well as boosted commerce in the community as people from other parts of the state and Nigeria can now come to Umueri to live and do business.

“The Vigilante team is now having improved and better working relationship with the Police and other security agencies in the state.

” In the area of healthcare, Chief Metchie’s administration has attracted the attention of the state government as never before which led to the rehabilitation and renovation of the Umueri General hospital, deployment of Chief Medical Director, doctors, nurses and other medical personnel to the facility.

“The state Government also inaugurated Dental Clinic at the hospital and deployed a specialist in that field to take charge of the clinic.

“The UGA administration has constructed the Ikenga New Ultramodern Market which consists of 600 units of lock-up shops, industrial borehole system for portable water, expansive parking lot, police station post, multi-purpose meeting halls, modern public toilet facilities, fire service station, access roads and drainage system. The project promises to be a major boost to trade and commerce in Umueri

” Metchie initiated the Health Insurance card for the 14 elders Health is wealth. The cost of quality healthcare and medicine is quite expensive and almost inaccessible by the less privileged which informed the desire of the administration to help the aged in the community.

” Under Metchie as Umueri PG, there has been lots of road construction across villages in the community including Rest House to Obinette Umueri, to Technical School, to Ezi Oelle, down to Stella Marris school Ugume Umueri. These are important routes that weren’t motor able in the past. The construction of these local roads has helped to create alternative routes to Umueri.

    1. During the 2022 national flooding that affected many states, Umueri community was one of the most focused areas because of the frantic efforts of the PG who made calls to the state government and international community. The wide publicity generated by his outcry attracted needed intervention, including the physical presence of the state government led by the wife of our Governor and international organizations. The PG and his team also made donations of humanitarian relief resources and palliatives in their drive to alleviate the sufferings of the victims as well as a means of restoring hope. They also gave out cash donation of N1m. As a result of the PG’s letter to individuals, NGOs, churches, and humanitarian relief organizations, there were positive responses, the reason why life was made a bit easier for victims as relief materials poured into the IDP camp including food, bedding materials, medicine, women care materials, blankets, toiletries and many others.

” The PG has continued to put Umueri on world map through his numerous, self-sponsored media campaigns using television, radio and social media, including calls for global intervention on Umueri Erosion, among others.

” The PG and his team also initiated the Non indigenous ID card Project for visitors and non indigenes living in the community. The project enables the leadership through the Vigilante, to identify and keep track of non-indigenes within Umueri with a view to strengthening the measures for safety and security.

“As part of community mobilisation and hospitality meant to foster unity and oneness, members of Umueri community were supported to gather at the palace of HRM Igwe Sir Benneth Emeka (Oke-Ebo II) to celebrate the 6th Ovala Festival on Saturday 11th of February 2023 which was a unique and memorable day.

“Chief Metchie’s administration has initiated and installed Solar powered street lighting system in Umueri which also provides light in the IDP camp for victims of the flooding.

” Apart from duty call, Metchie has, through the Johnny Metchie Foundation and Youth Empowerment Sponsorship, paid school fees and other material needed for the daughter of the women leader, Ijali Ofodile to enroll in school.

” Only recently, Metchie launched a personal initiative called Light Up Umueri in which 150 households in the community were provided with solar powered light, a gesture that provoked wild jubilation across villages.

“Perhaps, Metchie’s greatest achievement as PG is the transparency and openness with which he handles the finances of UGA.

“Within one year in office, Chief Metchie has submitted financial records two times for public scrutiny even though we all know that his leadership of UGA is just a sort of charity work for him as most of the achievements recorded are funded from his private purse for the overall wellbeing of Umueri people.

” Due to the various interventions of the Metchie-led administration, the attention of the Federal Government and international community have been drawn to Umueri, the reason why there was global attention in the community during the 2022 flooding across Nigeria, when the United Nations, Red Cross and UNESCO, among others visited Umueri to help in mitigating the impact of the flooding.

“At no time in the past had the Anambra State government shown interest in Umueri than in the administration of Metchie, his deputy and entire executive.

“To buttress this, the Prof. Chukwuma Soludo led Anambra State Government sent a rapid response team to Umueri, led by Her Excellency, Mrs. Nonye Soludo during the 2022 flooding. Her Excellency’s emergency’s response team came along with some international agencies and made donations, including drugs, food and toiletries, among others. The government also quickly set up IDPs, evacuated affected persons, among other intervention, in response to the call by Chief Metchie, on behalf of UGA executive.

“It is a thing of pride to all sons and daughters of Umueri that our illustrious son and President General emerged as the Prime Minister of Anambra State Association of Town Unions (ASATU) less than one year of his inauguration as the PG of Umueri.

” For his unmatchable track record of achievements, Dr. Metchie has received numerous titles, honours and investitures from Umueri and other town in Anambra, other parts of Nigeria and internationally including the African Director, International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA). He has also bagged an honorary degree from an American University while many churches have honoured him with medals of service.

“It is a well-known fact that in every human governance, there are envious people who would deliberately close their eyes and minds to anything positive, but would rather be in bed with pull down syndrome agents.

“We therefore urge all stakeholders, including Anambra State Government and security agencies to always ignore the shenanigans of these mischief makers as we look forward to a greater and better Umueri under the leadership of Amb. Dr. John Metchie, the PG of Umueri General Assembly and his Deputy, Mr. John Udenze.

” On this note, we also urge the PG to ignore such irritants and continue to focus his attention on all that is good, all that is beautiful and all that is progressive.

” This is because more than any time in the past, the current UGA leadership has been transparent.

” We also wish to inform you, sir, we wish to say that the there is a pocket of opposition by those who have approached the PG and his team, seeking financial gratification, thinking that it would business as usual but Metchie has rebuffed them, insisting that his service is selfless and for the wellbeing of Umueri community.

“In view of the above and numerous achievements and humanitarian gestures of our President General towards the development of Umueri, we, the executive members of Umueri General Assembly, leadership of Ikenga Umueri and Quarter Chairmen, representing the good people of the community, hereby state categorically that we are happy and satisfied with the current UGA leadership and hereby Pass a Vote of Confidence on Chief John Metchie and his deputy Mr. John Udenze.

” Please, accept the assurances of our highest regards and loyalty to the Government of Anambra State.’’

The naira has recorded a marginal gain of N6 to close at N782/$ in the Investors and Exporters (I&E) window- official market.

The appreciation of the local currency followed improved liquidity and transaction activities at the official window.

The naira had on Monday closed at N744/$ at the I&E window, made a N44/$ loss on Tuesday and a sudden rebound on Wednesday.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) unified all exchange rates into the I&E window and allowed market forces to determine the exchange rate for the naira.

Data from FMDQ Exchange showed gradual drop in market liquidity from over $260 million turnover to less than $70 million in recent weeks.

The I&E window was activated in June 2017, and represents the broader forex market, where dollars sourced from autonomous sources are traded between Authorised Dealers, Clients and the CBN.

This forex window is also the underlying market for the FMDQ Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Rate Fixing (NAFEX) benchmark.

The unification of multiple exchange rates into the I&E window has been described by stakeholders as a game changer in the apex bank’s plan to achieve exchange rate stability.

The policy, which allowed forex dealers and investors to buy and sell dollars at exchange rate of their choice provided they can find buyers. This move aims to ensure that the naira is allowed to trade at the market-clearing rate in the forex market.

CEO of Moniepoint, Tosin Eniolorunda, said the CBN’s decision to float the naira is a clear step in the right direction for our economy, ensuring investor confidence continues to grow.

“The decision is good for business, jobs and growth. It will help Nigeria’s brilliant entrepreneurs to do business globally and attract foreign investment. It will also help reduce inflation, leaving more money in people’s pockets,” he said.

President, Association of Bureaux De Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON), Dr. Aminu Gwadabe advised the CBN to ensure liquidity in the retail end of the market by de-monopolizing diaspora remittances and stronger collaboration with BDCs which control the retail end of the forex market.
