Tomori, Kaka made me join Milan, says Loftus-Cheek

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has admitted Fikayo Tomori ‘inspired’ him to make the leap from Chelsea to Milan, while he hopes to bring something of Ricky Kaka’s ‘running with the ball’ to this team.

The England international completed his transfer to San Siro for circa €16m plus up to another €5.5m in various bonuses, which is his first experience outside of London after Chelsea and loan spells with Crystal Palace and Fulham.

“It’s a special feeling for me, it’s a new chapter. I was at Chelsea for 20 years of my life, this is a special time for me to finally break away from the club, start a new chapter in my life and for it to be at AC Milan is incredible,” he told the official club website.

“To have the opportunity to play here at San Siro, this huge club with the history it has, the legends who have played here, it is an honour to put the shirt on.”

When Loftus-Cheek announced the move, the most excited response he got was from former Chelsea teammate Fikayo Tomori, who has proved English players can make their mark in Serie A and at Milan.

“Tomori is a great example of someone who tried a new challenge outside of England and been very successful. For him to win the title with Milan and the success he’s already had with the club inspired me to come here as well,” he said. “I played with Fikayo in the academy and it’ll be good to wear the same shirt as him in the San Siro.”

He continued: “I’ve spoken to him a lot over the last couple of months, especially when things were in the press and he asked if I was coming.

“ At times I couldn’t say too much to him, but when things started getting serious, I was asking about the club, where he lives, where the training ground is and all that.

“He said if you come, then you’ll feel how big the club is, the history of the club and what it means to play for AC Milan. I was always tempted to come. When we played Milan in the Champions League and I felt what it was like to play at San Siro, the atmosphere was amazing.”

Loftus-Cheek has no doubts which Rossoneri legend inspired him the most.

“I love to watch Kaka play, purely because he was an incredible runner with the ball and that is one of my strengths, when I can open up and run with the ball. Kaka was one of the best at that and definitely one of my favourites to watch.”

Look , people think Burna boy is the first Nigerian to win award, the Grammy – King Sunny Ade has been nominated over seven times, late Fela Anikulapo, Femi Kuti was nominated for Grammys seven times, Sade Adu has won the Grammys, Seal has won Grammys, so Nigerians have won it before. It is just that this young generation thinks these young people that are doing it are the first to do it now. But that is all well and good.”

  • Employers crucial to safeguarding retirement workforce, says PenCom

Employers crucial to safeguarding retirement workforce, says PenCom

Employers have a crucial role in safeguarding the retirement aspirations of the workforce, the National Pension Commission (PenCom) has said.

By fulfilling this obligation, employers contribute to the stability and growth of the pension fund, thereby benefiting the participants.

According to the commission, in a world where financial security during retirement is paramount, the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) is a vital pillar for providing a dignified post-work life for employees.

The Pension Reform Act (PRA 2014) defines the roles and responsibilities of the employer and the employee under the CPS.

The CPS is a  scheme under which the employer and the employee contribute to the employee’s retirement benefits.

    Obtaining an Employer Code

The Director-General, PenCom, Mrs. Aisha Dahir-Umar, said to ensure seamless integration into the CPS, employers must prioritise the first step, which is to obtain an Code from PenCom.

She said: “The Employer Code is a unique identifier that enables effective tracking and monitoring of an employer’s pension obligations. By acquiring an Employer Code, organisations demonstrate their commitment to transparency and accountability within the pension system. Employers who do not have an Employer Code cannot remit pension contributions for their employees.

“To obtain an Employer Code from PenCom, the employer must provide the following: A company registration certificate issued by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), a Tax Identification Number (TIN), and an application letter on the company’s official letterhead.

Payment of pension contributions for employees

“One of the fundamental obligations of employers under the CPS is the regular payment of pension contributions for their employees. The employer is required to deduct the monthly contributions of the employee, not later than seven working days from the day salary is paid, and remit an amount comprising eight per cent for the employee and 10 per cent employer contribution to the Pension Fund Custodian (PFC) specified by the Pension Fund Administrator (PFA) of the employee.

“To maintain the integrity of the CPS, employers must remit pension contributions promptly. Timely remittance not only ensures the smooth functioning of the pension system but also safeguards employees’ trust in their employers. By fulfilling this obligation diligently, employers contribute to the stability and growth of the pension fund, ultimately, benefiting participants. The Pension Reform Act 2014 (PRA 2014) states that an employer who fails to deduct or remit the contributions within the stipulated time frame of seven working days from the day salaries are paid shall, in addition to making the remittances already due, be liable to a penalty, which shall not be less than two per cent of the total contributions that remain unpaid for each month or part of each month the default continues.’’

    The penalty for non-payment

    of employee’s RSA

The PenCom boss further stated: “It should be noted, however, that the 18 per cent monthly pension contribution is a prescribed minimum, as the employer may elect to increase the rate or bear the burden for the employee.

“Employers must deduct the specified percentage from employees’ salaries, demonstrating their commitment to fostering a culture of personal financial planning among their workforce. This deduction strengthens employees’ retirement prospects and instils financial discipline when made consistently.

    Group Life Insurance Policy

    for employees vital

“In line with the CPS, employers must procure a Group Life Insurance Policy (GLP) for their employees. The policy serves as a safety net, providing financial protection to employees’ families in case of their death while in active service.

The policy pays the ‘sum assured’ benefit to the next-of-kin or dependents of an employee who dies in active service.

“Specifically, the provisions of the GLP affect employers in the public and private sectors covered under the CPS. Employers must maintain a GLP in favour of each employee covered by the CPS for at least three times their annual total emolument. The premium for the GLP shall be paid not later than the date of commencement of the cover. Where the employer fails or refuses to make payment as and when due, the employer shall arrange to settle claims arising from the death of any staff during such a period.”

    Opening nominal RSAs

She maintained that employees are responsible for initiating the opening of Retirement Savings Accounts (RSAs) for their  contributions, stating that RSAs are personalised accounts that enable individuals to accumulate their pension contributions over their working lives.

“Employers are pivotal in facilitating this process, ensuring that employees have their RSAs registered to commence contributions promptly. However, where an employee has yet to open an RSA six months after employment, the employer must open a Nominal RSA for the employee. This proactive step ensures the employee’s pension contributions are not neglected and paves the way for a smoother transition once the employee establishes his RSAs. Employers’ commitment to inclusivity and comprehensive coverage reflects their dedication to supporting employees in their retirement aspirations,” she added.

She maintained that as the backbone of the nation’s workforce, employers play a pivotal role in upholding the integrity and success of the CPS.

“By obtaining an Employer Code, opening nominal accounts for employees without RSAs, deducting employees’ contributions, remitting pension contributions on time, and procuring Group Life Insurance, employers demonstrate their commitment to their workforce’s financial well-being and future security.

“Robust and responsible employer participation in the CPS ensures a retirement landscape built on trust, transparency and a shared vision for a dignified future for all employees,” she added.

  • The Evolution of Horse Breeding Techniques in Nigeria

The Evolution of Horse Breeding Techniques in Nigeria

Nigeria, with its vast culture and traditions, has long held a special relationship with horses. Over time this relationship has changed from using horses for warfare or farming purposes to riding for pleasure or competition. Central to this change have been technological advances in breeding techniques for horses.

The Rise of Modern Veterinary Practices

Modern veterinary practices have proven instrumental to the Nigerian horse breeding industry, with traditional methods being relied upon predominantly before this breakthrough. Today, modern veterinary practices bring scientific rigour and evidence-based practices into horse breeding programs, leading to more consistent outcomes and healthier horses overall.

Techniques such as artificial insemination and embryo transfer have become more commonplace, allowing for the preservation and propagation of valuable genetic traits. Additionally, advancements in diagnostic tools have enabled the early detection and treatment of diseases, significantly improving the lifespan and quality of life for Nigerian horses.

The impact of these advancements extends beyond the health of individual horses. They have contributed to the overall stability and growth of the equestrian industry in Nigeria, leading to more consistent breeding results. This, in turn, bolstered various sectors, including the exciting world of horse racing and horse betting, which gives people the chance to bet on their favourite horses!

Selective Breeding: Shaping the Nigerian Horse

Selective breeding is one of the most fundamental techniques in horse breeding, and it has been practised in Nigeria for centuries. It involves choosing specific horses to reproduce based on their desired traits, such as speed, stamina, or strength. Over the years, this process has become increasingly sophisticated, with breeders now considering a wider range of traits, including temperament and suitability for specific disciplines.

Historically, Nigerian breeders focused on developing horses that were robust and durable, capable of withstanding the country’s challenging terrains and climates. However, as the equestrian industry grew and diversified, the demand for specialised horses increased. This led to a shift in selective breeding strategies, with more emphasis being placed on producing horses with specific qualities for racing, dressage, and other equestrian sports.

Nutrition: The Building Blocks of Health

Nutrition plays a crucial role in horse breeding, and there have been significant strides in understanding and implementing optimal dietary practices for horses in Nigeria. Historically, horse diets were largely determined by what was readily available, often leading to nutritional deficiencies that could impact health and performance.

However, recent years have seen a shift towards more scientifically-based feeding practices. Modern food nutritional plans are not only available for humans but also for horses. They are tailored to each horse’s unique needs, taking into account factors such as age, workload, and reproductive status. The incorporation of supplements and fortified feeds has become common, ensuring horses receive all the necessary nutrients for optimal growth and performance.

Nutrition’s impact on horse breeding is profound. A well-nourished mare is more likely to produce a healthy foal, while a well-fed stallion is more likely to be a successful sire. As such, the advancements in equine nutrition have directly contributed to the improvement in the quality of Nigerian horses.

The Impact of Evolved Breeding Techniques

The evolution of horse breeding techniques in Nigeria has had a significant impact on the quality of horses and the vibrancy of the equestrian industry. From the sophistication of selective breeding to the precision of modern veterinary practices and the science of nutrition, each advancement has played a part in enhancing the health, performance, and longevity of Nigerian horses.
