  • Bayern dilly-dally over Kane, Osimhen

    Bayern dilly-dally over Kane, Osimhen

There are strong indications that Bayern Munich have turned to Napoli star Victor Osimhen after putting talks with Harry Kane on hold.

Tottenham have rejected a €70m offer for the England international, demanding €90m, so Bayern Munich have put talks on hold and consider making an offer for Osimhen.

Yesterday’s printed edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport claimed that the Bavarians are unwilling to match Napoli‘s €180m asking price but will offer more than €100m.

Bayern would rather pay this fee for a 24-year-old striker than €90m for Kane, who will turn 30 on July 28.

Talks between the club and the player’s entourage have already begun.

It remains to be seen if it will be enough for Napoli, who have reportedly rejected a €100m offer from PSG. Liverpool are also interested in Osimhen.

If the Nigeria international joins Bayern, he will reunite with Napoli defender Kim who has agreed to personal terms with the Bundesliga giants ahead of a transfer worth more than €50m.

Meanwhile, some Bayern fans are yearning to have Osimhen in their fold. “Victor Osimhen is better suited for Bayern, he is younger and I believe will easily adapt to Bayern’s style of play. Kane should remain in the premier league, Man United should be a better option for him,” said a fan known as Charles.

Another fan, Dr. Lobo wrote: “Napoli should not lower the 180m euros fee for Osimhen. If Bayern can’t pay it, oh well too bad.”

  • Celtic keeps mute on Ndidi’s transfer

Celtic keeps mute on Ndidi’s transfer

Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi is not a serious target for Celtic during the summer transfer window, Football Scotland has reported this evening.

Last week, The Daily Mail suggested that the Bhoys were interested in the Foxes star, who signed up at the King Power Stadium for a fee of £15m back in 2017.

Following their relegation to the English Championship, several Leicester players will be available on the market this summer and naturally, some of them will be linked with their former manager Brendan Rodgers.

However, Football Scotland claimed Celtic are not pursuing the 26-year-old. Interestingly, it is also stated that before Ange Postecoglou’s exit, the defensive midfield position was one being looked at by the club this summer. That likely remains the case.

The make-up of Rodgers’ midfield heading into the new season is one of the big unknowns at the moment. Until we see his tactics play out, most of us are guessing when it comes to what shape and style he will go with.

Callum McGregor is almost guaranteed to be a regular, but he can play a variety of roles and Rodgers may well be keen to utilize him in a more advanced position.

If the right kind of physical and mobile sitting midfielder is on the market, it could be optimal to pursue that option and free up McGregor.

The seriousness or consequences resulting from Aaron Mooy’s injury issues are not yet known while assets such as Reo Hatate and Matt O’Riley may attract big money on the market.

It makes sense then that Celtic will be looking for another star midfielder. But it seems that won’t be Ndidi, despite his prior working relationship with the new boss.

IMF, WBG, others mull private investment to tackle climate change

The Managing Director, International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva and President of the World Bank Group (WBG), Ajay Banga, yesterday stood-in for Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs), at a meeting devoted to exploring ways to mobilise private capital to tackle climate change.

The parley which included the United Nations (UN), agreed to join forces to identify priority actions to mobilize private climate investment in emerging markets and developing countries (EMDCs), focusing on delivering near-term results, in the runup to COP28.

The parties to the meeting which was a part of the consensus at a roundtable discussion as part of the Summit for a New Global Financing Pact, in Paris, France, opined that the “current climate investment into EMDCs remains insufficient to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, further underscoring the need to use MDB and other development finance catalytically to unlock local and international private finance.”

This is based on the recognition that “private capital will need to play a key role in addressing the financing gap for transitioning to net zero.” Also in support of this effort, are the COP28 President-Designate, Dr. Sultan Al Jaber and the UN Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance, Mark Carney, who is also the Co-Chair of the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ).

The parties also stressed the need to “enhance technical capacity to build a pipeline of bankable climate projects, and implement public policies to establish an enabling environment for investment in the green transition.”

In their opinion, “ensuring a just and global net-zero transition requires scaling creative and effective solutions, including solutions to mobilizing catalytic private investment in EMDCs.”

  • China ratifies WTO deals on fisheries subsidies

China ratifies WTO deals on fisheries subsidies

China, the world’s leading marine fishing producer, has formally accepted a historic trade agreement for ocean sustainability at the World Economic Forum’s 14th Annual Meeting of the New Champions.

Director-General, WTO, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, received the document from  Minister of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, Wang Wentao, at the World Economic Forum’s 14th Annual Meeting of the New Champions. With an estimated 564,000 ships, China in 2020 had the biggest fishing fleet in the world, according to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

It will help bring into force a global deal struck a year ago by the WTO’s 164 members to work towards eliminating billions of dollars in “harmful” subsidies that are emptying the oceans of fish.

The agreement prohibits support for illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, bans support for fishing overfished stocks and ends subsidies for fishing on the unregulated high seas.

The World Economic Forum, through the Friends of Ocean Action, has been a long-term supporter of the global agreement along with businesses, ocean experts and civil society organisations.

“As the world leader in marine fish catch, China’s support for the implementation of this agreement is critical to multilateral efforts to safeguard oceans, food security and livelihoods. By curbing harmful fishing subsidies worldwide, we can together forge a path towards a legacy of abundance and opportunity for generations to come,” said Okonjo-Iweala.  Under trade rules, two-thirds of the WTO’s 164 members must ratify the deal for it to take effect. China’s support now means that 36 countries, including all European Union members, have formally accepted it, and the aim is to have the remaining countries do the same before the 13th WTO Ministerial Conference in February next year. Members have also committed to continuing negotiations to expand the scope to include subsidies that support excessive fishing.

“The Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies is the second multilateral agreement reached by the WTO since its establishment in 1995, and the first WTO agreement aimed at achieving the goal of environmental sustainable development,” said Minister Wang. “It is a significant agreement to boost the confidence of all members in multilateralism. China has completed the approval procedure of the agreement and will work with all members to push the agreement to enter into force before the 13th WTO Ministerial Conference. At the same time, China will participate in the second phase of negotiations in a positive and constructive manner and look forward to an early outcome of the negotiations.” Børge Brende, President, World Economic Forum, said that China’s ratification of the agreement was an important indication of the strength of multistakeholder and multilateral cooperation.

“Global challenges like ocean sustainability need global solutions. The Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies shows that governments can work in common purpose for the benefit of communities, economies and the world at large.” The news follows the UN adoption of a world-first high seas treaty protecting marine biodiversity. Peter Thomson, UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean and co-chair of the Friends of Ocean Action, said that restoring the ocean’s health is a key part of combatting global warming. “Restoring ocean health enables people everywhere to thrive and ensures we leave a liveable planet for generations to come. I sincerely hope China’s support for the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies will now open the flood gates for other countries to deposit their instruments of national acceptance. Through this historic agreement, we have a real chance to make lasting, positive changes to protect the ocean and everyone who depends on it.”
