Mutfwang flags off monthly environmental sanitation

PLATEAU State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has flagged off monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Jos, the Plateau State capital.

The exercise, which is the first since his coming into office about a month ago, is part of Governor Mutfwang’s vision of maintaining a clean and healthy environment to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

Governor Mutfwang, who flagged off the exercise on Saturday along the Federal Secretariat Road, Tudun Wada, Jos, said the exercise would be replicated at the end of every month across the 17 Local Government Areas of the State.

“We are here to take a definite step to reinforce what we started from 30th May, 2023, when I declared a state of emergency on environmental sanitation. I want to say that the Task Force we constituted have done a great job so far and we want to appreciate them for what they have done.

“The issue of cleaning the environment is beyond the Task Force. It is something that must become a way of life for us. We are not a dirty people, we are a people that live cleanliness and therefore, we must pick up the courage to begin again to ensure that our houses are kept clean; our neighbourhoods are kept clean to ensure that the entire city is kept clean.

“But beyond the state capital, all other areas including the 17 local government areas should maintain the same drive towards ensuring cleanliness in their local government areas. From this day onward, we want to declare that every last Saturday of the month will be observed as Sanitation Day.”

Governor Mutfwang said the sanitation exercise should not be left to the government alone, and charged every neighbourhood to organise itself to maintain cleanliness in line with the vision of the administration.

The governor added that sanitation courts will, from next sanitation day, begin to move around to sanction offenders, stressing that he would not want anyone to be caught on the wrong side of the law.

Protesters barricade Omuo-Kabba-Abuja highway over federal college relocation

A protest by indigenes of Omuo-Ekiti, the headquarters of Ekiti East Council Area of Ekiti State against the relocation of the Federal College of Education from the community to Ilawe-Ekiti left hundreds of travelers stranded for several hours yesterday.

The protesters including youths, women, and traditional rulers from the community took to the street as early as 9 am and blocked the Omuo-Kabba-Abuja highway leading to Kogi being plied by travelers to and from Abuja to Ado-Ekiti, Ondo, and Lagos states.

Efforts by a detachment of police led by the Divisional Police Officer of the area to restore normalcy were rebuffed by the visibly angry protesters who insisted on expressing their displeasure against the relocation of the institution.

The protesters were armed with placards bearing various inscriptions and chanted solidarity songs against the relocation of the newly established federal college of Education.

Some of the placards displayed by the protesters include “On Omuo FCE we stand! No more! No less, This injustice must be redressed Return Our FCE back to us, Don’t rub Peter to pay Paul, FCE belongs to Omuo Ekiti, among others.

Addressing journalists, a leader in the community, Chief Segun Akanle appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji to come to the rescue of Omuo Ekiti by returning the college back to the town.

Akanle who described the citizens of the community as law-abiding, noted that Omuo Ekiti has been working for the establishment of the FCE for over ten years, adding that, a bill establishing the institution has been passed by both the 8th and 9th National Assembly and only awaiting presidential assent.

“We have 12 communities in Ekiti East and there is no federal or state presence in any of them. A bill establishing a College of Education has been passed and waiting for the president’s assent before the Ilawe people went through the backdoor to alter the location of the school.

“Why would the government establish two federal institutions in Ilawe and leave the remaining parts of the constituency? This is not acceptable.

“We have confidence in Tinubu to do the needful by righting the wrong and returning the Federal College of Education to Omuo Ekiti where it rightly belongs.

Also reacting to the development, two prominent paramount rulers in Ekiti East Local Government condemned the alleged clandestine move to change the location of the school to Ilawe.

The Olomuo of Omuo Ekiti, Oba Noah Omonigbehin said he was a participant at the public hearings by the Senate leading to the establishment of the school in both the 8th and 9th sessions.

“We presented a memo to the August legislative assembly. We wonder how someone who has not asked for a thing would be given. I urge President Tinubu to correct this injustice and return the institution to Omuo Ekiti. “

  • Artists’ Village of delusion

    Artists’ Village of delusion

    By Edozie Udeze

THERE was once an Artists’ Village at the National Theatre premises, Iganmu, Lagos. It is not that the Village has finally disappeared or gone into extinction. No. Far from it. But does it still exist? Is the Artists’ Village still there in its original place and location? Yes and no! Yes because there are yet some artists and other manner of people inhabiting the premises. There are some artists; big, small and others yet to start off who are on ground making use of the facilities in the village in one guise or the other.

A visit to the premises last weekend depicted all manner of activities happening within the settlement. A few years ago, the management of the National Theatre, led by its former General Manager, Mallam Kabir Yusuf sent bulldozers, caterpillars and security agents to level down some structures in the village. A brutal and ruthless action, the demolition left a lot of artists in tatters, stranded, homeless and without offices. Most of them lost art works worth millions of naira. Unfortunately, Yusuf described those structures as illegal and therefore were deemed unfit to continue to distort the master-plan of the Theatre. Notwithstanding that many of those properties were erected by the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), a sister parastatal, Yusuf still went ahead with his mission. Today the place is still in ruins.

In the midst of the wanton destruction, some artists gathered in earnest to sue for compensation. Today, Yusuf had left office, Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information under whose tenure the act was done and who equally promised some palliatives to those affected, has also left office. In the meantime, some well-to-do artists on the premises have relocated. Some who still have their studios there are living on borrowed time. Even though they try to settle down to produce some manner of works, the atmosphere indeed is bereft of beauty and friendliness that help creativity to blossom. This place was once bubbling with endless ideas of creativity, art works, rehearsals, stage dramas, musical productions and presentations, dances, auditioning, et al.

At one point, film producers, directors, those hunting for new and fresh talents converged there. Even big Nollywood stars were often seen there to either watch plays or do rehearsals. The Little Theatre within the premises has truly withstood a test of time. Within its ambiance, plays were done, offices existed for the comfort of those who needed to function from there for the purposes of proximity. There was no weekend one or two cultural or literary shows would not happen in the premises. Now, Yusuf has killed the fun. The place, to say the least, is an eyesore now. With all manner of kiosks, makeshift stores erected on the premises it can now be conveniently tagged artists’ ghetto. It is truly the darkest period in the history of artists, particularly those who lost artefacts, costumes, masks, sculptures, props and other properties at the time of the destruction.

One of them, Monday Goubadia, who is still hibernating in his workshop there, spoke in a subdued voice. “I am still here because I will soon finish building my house. After that I will relocate and will make my house my studios. I lost plenty of art works when the destruction took place. Unfortunately, years after, we have not got the compensation promised us. The amount of sculptures, masks, woodworks and ceramics I lost here ran into millions”, he said.

He regretted that as it is now, they do not know who or where to channel their grievances and petition. “Those in-charge then have all left office. The artists helping us to actualize our demands have left to different locations and places”, Goubadia, a Benin-born multi-talented sculptor and wood carver, said.

As may be imagined, all kinds of unscrupulous elements hang around the village in all corners. Makeshift homes litter here and there. Old stores, formerly beehives of life and activities have turned moribund with some relics of them serving as gatekeepers for the homeless. Away from this hobnob, is a mechanic workshop, with all manner of vehicles receiving attention from mechanics. Those ones occupy the frontage of the Little Theatre. That spot used to be a lovely esplanade, spacious for auditioning, rehearsals and hangouts when the Village was up and doing.

As the mechanics busied themselves knocking one or two bolts together, some artists clustered on the pavements, chatting, discussing and clasping. The most pathetic sight to behold now is the former library owned by NCAC. Apart from it being abandoned long ago, the building housing some of the best stocked books on culture in times past is now sitting on a pool of flood water. In fact, it is already submerged just like most of the remaining structures within the premises. Save for the red brick walls that still give it some level of modernity, this NCAC library will soon be due for demolition due essentially to neglect.

This area of the Theatre used to house the offices of Nigerian Guild of Editors, Newspaper Proprietors and others. Except for NAN that is not far from there and has since remained active, the NGE has fizzled away. A former CBAAC office nearby has also evaporated. All you see are relics, archival resemblances of what used to be enviable structures for big time institutions and corporate offices.

  • Alo tasks govt on tourism potential in Nigeria

Alo tasks govt on tourism potential in Nigeria

GOVERNMENTS at all levels have been urged to harness tourism potentials across Nigeria to boost the country’s economy.

The Planter of the Christ Apostolic Church, (Adamimogo Grace of Mercy Prayer Mountain) World-wide, Prophet Sam Olu Alo who gave the advise, lamented that nation’s tourism destinations were largely left untapped.

He, therefore, called on the governments to invest heavily in and develop our culture, historical sites, prayer mountains, and other tourist delights to create employment and generate more revenues.

Prophet Olu Alo spoke in Jerusalem, Israel, where he led some pilgrims from Nigeria on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

He said, “We have things that can make our country great and successful in this nation. Ikogosi warm springs, prayer mountains,  and historical spots, are better than those in foreign countries we are traveling to but we don’t attach any importance to them and this is bringing challenges and discomfort.

“My advice to our leaders, the President,  state governors, National Assembly Members, and House of Assembly Members is if can use the privileges they have to develop our tourist sites by investing heavily in them, tourists will be visiting all these places.

“Take Israel for example, tourists from across the world always come in their numbers to visit the country, it is because their government developed their tourist sites to make it attractive to the visitors. And through that,  they generate employment for their people. this is also what is happening in Mecca. Some of the things they developed as tourist attractions represent their culture, tradition, and history.

“If we can emulate them and work on those things God has blessed us with in Nigeria, I believe they will glorify God in our land, increase government sources, and revenue and help in generating employment for our teeming youths”.

The man of God charged his co-pilgrims to be good ambassadors of Jesus wherever with good works and character.

“You have received another name: JP as a person who had visited the holy land, the city of God, use this and the lessons learned here to win souls for Jesus”.

“The most important aspect of it is for us to love one another. It is still missing in our country Nigeria and is causing problems and pains in the country, if we search for the love and find it, our families, homes, and country will be better for it”, he said.

Prophet Alo also traveled to UK from Israel to attend a programme organized to mark the third year anniversary of the Grace of Mercy Prayer Mountain and Glorious Generation Partners, UK and EU chapter.

He was at the  Abuja House, the headquarters of the Federal Government of Nigeria in the United Kingdom on the visit of Nigeria’s high commissioner to the United Kingdom, Ambassador Alhaji Sarafat Tunji Isola.

  • In defence of El-Rufai

    In defence of El-Rufai

    • By Austin Oniyokor

I have read the scathing criticisms that have trailed the comments made by the former Governor of Kaduna state, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai with respect to his decision to run a Muslim-dominated government between 2019 and 2023 when he handed over the reins of government in the state and what played out during the presidential election in 2023.

As a Southern Christian, I was almost taken in by the hoopla and hysteria that greeted the comments and wondered why any leader would make such comments at a time like this in a divided and diversified country like ours.

But, upon a careful analysis of the contents and context of the comments made by El-Rufai, I came to the conclusions that I would espouse presently.

Broadly speaking, El-Rufai spoke about the politics of Kaduna state, his analysis and what has worked for him and his team since 2019; and how the same played out at the national level in 2023.

First, it was reported that his audience were Muslim clerics. For those schooled in the field of communication and the art of public speaking, they would know that the audience is key just as the medium is said to be the message. If you do not speak the language of your audience or talk to them in the language they would understand, then, you have not communicated.

Secondly, he spoke about what has worked for him since 2019 and was replicated in the 2023 elections, not just in Kaduna state but also at the federal level. Whether anyone likes it or not, what he said are indubitable facts staring us in the face. We may resent or even deride it but it does not change the cold facts. What do I mean? When El-Rufai ran for the first term in 2015, he had a Christian running mate in the late Architect Barnabas Bala (a.k.a Bantex) who was the deputy governor until 2019 when he resigned to contest the Kaduna South Senate seat on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) but lost to Senator Danjuma La’ah of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Has anyone bothered to find out why the same El-Rufai who had a Christian running mate and deputy governor during his first term turn round to prefer a Muslim-Muslim ticket that has won elections twice and now projecting into the future? Instead of taking the message and learning useful lessons, most of us are ignoring the message and toeing the easy path of attacking the messenger.

Now, according to El-Rufai, he did his calculation and found that most of those who are not Muslims do not vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kaduna state. His words, “Why did I pick Dr Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe to be my deputy in 2019? First, I did a thorough calculation that most of those that are not Muslims don’t vote for our party (The All Progressives Congress). Most of them. So, why should I give them the deputy (governor) position? I did my calculation and I knew we could win the election without giving them (position of deputy governor). That’s first. That’s a purely political issue. It’s politics. You want to win an election, you’re looking for people that will vote for you. We have observed that since we started practising democracy, we know places we used to win elections and those places we don’t. We’ve done that calculation politically. That’s the political point of it.”

The operative words are “calculation” and “non-Muslims”. One would have expected that those excoriating El-Rufai will provide their numbers that would put a lie to his assertions. But, no. However, what we do know which is in the public domain was that in what looked like a political suicide, El-Rufai picked a Muslim woman to be his running mate in 2019 and got re-elected. It is fact! Yet again, a further extrapolation of “non-Muslims” could be stretched to mean Christians, traditional worshippers, atheists and the like. But even if it meant Christians, the deed has been done; the next most important thing is: beyond the name-calling, what are my brothers and sisters in Christ doing to change the narrative?

Then El-Rufai went on to declare that he and his team wanted to prove that a Muslim-led or dominated government would not cheat Christians and would be fair and just to all, regardless of their religious beliefs. Of course, the next question that comes to mind is: why would anyone ever contemplate a government led or dominated by a particular religion in a complex state like Kaduna? But the reality and bitter truth is: it is in the nature of politics and democracy that people are rewarded for their votes, loyalty and merit or if you like value addition – in no particular order – and at the discretion of the appointing authorities.

Read Also: El-Rufai deposes two Kaduna monarchs

Yet, it is not the case that Christians were not appointed into positions of authority in Kaduna state. For instance, I heard that the Account-General of the state, Commissioner for Education, Commissioner for Internal Security and Deputy Chief of Staff, among others, were Christians. My little research about Mallam as he is fondly called showed that some of his close aides and associates are Christians from the South who have been his friends for decades.

Reflecting further on his second term, the election of his successor and projecting into the future, El-Rufai urged his audience to ensure not just the return of Senator Uba Sanni and Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe at the completion of their first term but to repeat the same feat for another eight years, making it a 24-year rule. Now, this to me is a mere wish or at best a plan that has been let out of the bag. Again, I ask: beyond the tagging and name-calling, what are those opposed to this wish or plan doing to counter it and make their own wish or plan come to fruition? After all, is it not said that democracy is a game of numbers? Is the plurality of opinions and choices no longer one of the beauties of democracy?

Whereas there has been much Ado about the Muslim-Muslim ticket in Kaduna state, nothing is being said of the Christian-Christian ticket in the neighbouring Plateau state where the Christian-Muslim population is like the Muslim-Christian population in Kaduna state.

The other leg of El-Rufai’s comments was about what played out at the national level during the 2023 general election. We were all living witnesses to how one of the presidential candidates started going to churches and attending church organised programmes that he had never attended and may never attend again except during electioneering. We also saw the prevarication of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and religious bodies who wanted a Southern Christian as President but lacked the courage to either say so or are without the wherewithal to make it happen. Even where they preferred the other Muslim-Christian ticket, they lacked the balls or conviction to categorically say so or work for it. I know for a fact that while some clerics and christian bodies spoke against the same faith ticket, many of them could not tell their adherents or members who to vote for. So, they were caught in-between voting for Labour Party’s Southern Christian and Northern Muslim ticket or PDP’s Northern Muslim and Southern Christian ticket. Although some clerics may have directly or indirectly told their followers who to vote for, there was no proof they heeded such admonition or directive.

As it is often said there is no use crying over spilt milk. The 2023 elections have been won and lost. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a Southern Muslim and Senator Kashim Shettima, a Northern Muslim contested and won the presidential election. It is an undeniable fact. And some persons made it happen. Mallam Nasir El-Rufai was one of them. He gave insights into how it happened. Instead of digesting it and draw useful lessons from it, some are shouting on the rooftops and abusing him. The man has made his point and has since moved on. People may argue and haggle over what he said, but the point has been well made.

Some may deride El-Rufai, criticise and even call him names but it does not change the essence of the man. It is a fact that the totality of our background, training, beliefs and experience form who we are and our worldview. Some may lie and pretend to be who they are not. But, from the little I have seen and read about El-Rufai from afar, he is one Nigerian who is ever true to himself, his friends and whatever he believes in. He does not pretend. He speaks his mind and does whatever he believes in, no matter whose ox is gored. Above all, once he gives his words on anything, he does not waver, no matter what happens.

Already, the aggrieved are at the election petitions tribunals to ventilate their grievances as provided by extant laws. Until the tribunals give contrary verdicts, we can only reflect on what happened in the past, relate it to the present and then project into the future. That is all Mallam Nasir El-Rufai has done. He has pricked our minds with his account and reflections on the politics of Kaduna state and Nigeria as a whole. Let the debate begin. Perhaps, we should start asking some salient questions: why was it that a Muslim-Christian ticket did not win the last two governorship elections in Kaduna state? Why was it that a Northern Muslim-Southern Christian ticket did not win the 2023 presidential election? Why didn’t a Southern Christian and Northern Muslim presidential ticket also win? Why was it a Southern Muslim and Northern Muslim ticket that won? Would it be possible to have a Southern Christian and Northern Christian win an election in the nearest future? These should be the stuff that the political class, scholars, analysts and all lovers of democracy should be interested in.

Badagry LG set to inaugurate new office complex

THE Badagry Local Government is set to commission an ultra-modern administrative office complex valued at N214 million.

The chairman of the local government, Olusegun Onilude disclosed this to reporters at a get-together organized for the party members and constituents to mark the Eid- Kabir celebration.

Onilude said that the new 40- rooms administrative office complex is expected to solve the acute shortage of office accommodation for the council staff, state, and Federal personnel working in Badagry.

According to the council boss, the decision to build an ultra-modern office complex was borne out of the desire to give the secretariat a facelift since it was commissioned as a local government secretariat years back.

“To the best of my knowledge, after the commissioning of the site called the local government secretariat, no block has been added since. As a result of this, the ever-increasing staff strength of the council has been facing an acute shortage of office accommodation. And since the inception of this democratic dispensation in 1999, other local governments had been given a facelift by erecting a befitting administrative office complex except for Badagry local government.”

Onilude noted that by next month, the residents of Badagry would witness the much-awaited commissioning of  an ultra-modern administrative office complex, customary court, and marriage registry auditorium ” as a fulfillment of part of our electioneering campaign promises at enhancing infrastructural development in the local government area.”

President of the club, Lion Oni said the gesture was inspired by the display of decorum and evidence of learning they encountered in the pupils each time they visited, and the fact that they felt it would impact the learning process in the institution, seeing their love for music.

He added: “These gifts are to show our love for them, that we know what they are passing through, which is not of their making; and that we would always support them.”
