Sanwo-Olu deserves another term, say stakeholders

Stakeholders have urged Lagosians to ensure the democratic gains recorded under Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu in the last four years are sustained, as they go out to vote in the governorship election on Saturday.

Since his assumption of office in May 2019, Sanwo-Olu has sustained the progressive development in the state through his administration’s THEMES agenda.

THEMES, the agenda for Greater Lagos, represents the six-pillar development plan of the Sanwo-Olu administration. It stands for Traffic Management and Transportation; Health and Environment; Education and Technology; Making Lagos a 21st Century Economy; Entertainment and Tourism; and Security and Governance.

The stakeholders at a forum in Ikeja last Friday commended the governor for the role he played during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 by leading from the front as the incident commander.

They include artisans, professionals, business owners and politicians.

The stakeholders admonished the electorate not to be irrational when making a choice in the governorship election, as the Blue line rail project, which was inaugurated recently by President Muhammadu Buhari, and the Red line rail project, which is almost completed, are part of the signature projects executed by the governor.

Spokesman for the Association of Kwara Traders in Lagos, Alhaji Saliu Orilowo, said his members had enjoyed the facilities provided by the Sanwo-Olu administration and were in support of the governor for a second term.

He said Lagos State was too important in Nigeria’s development for it to be ruled by an inexperienced person.

An educationist at the forum, Mr. Festus Oyalowo, said he scored the Sanwo-Olu administration high in education development.

“Governor Sanwo-Olu has built and remodelled over 1,000 primary and secondary schools in the last four years. Who else can beat this record,” Oyalowo said.

The CEO of Cornerstone Properties Limited, Mr. Okoye Anyaso, who also attended the forum, said Sanwo-Olu had created a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere for businesses to thrive and for the different tribes to feel at home.

“Lagos remains the greatest city in Nigeria and one of the largest economies in West Africa. Despite sitting on only one per cent of Nigeria’s landmass—a third of that being water—it houses 10 per cent of Nigeria’s population,” Anyaso said, adding: “We should all remember that we are Nigerians, as well as Lagosians. We must continue to come together and keep the peace.”

The former governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, has also endorsed Sanwo-Olu for a second term.

A resident of Lagos, who only recently said he was quitting politics after being in the opposition party for years, Fayose said he believed that Sanwo-Olu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the March 11 governorship election, should be re-elected to continue the good work of his administration.

“Lagos business is a serious business. There are lots of challenges in Lagos. So, I enjoin everybody in Lagos to return Sanwo-Olu,” he said.

Ondo NBA threatens to boycott courts over illegal charges

The Akure branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has threatened to order its members to boycott court sittings over demand of what they termed illegal fees at the courts’ registries.

It issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Olusegun Odusola, to address the issue.

In the letter signed by NBA Chairman, Akure branch, Olabanjo Ayenakin, it called for the intervention of the chief judge to the infractions emanating from the registries.

According to the letter, “most of the registries and courts in the High Court and Magistrates’ Courts always complain of lack of files for originating processes and exhibits.

“The officers in the registry always resort to collecting money from counsel and litigants for the purchase of files for keeping exhibits and commencing cases.

“These officers always inform litigants and counsels that they have the backing of the court to so do and that files were not officially provided for their use.

“The assessing officers in the registries always charge counsel and litigants who file written statement on oaths and supporting affidavit for motion additional cost for red wafers.

“The additional costs for red wafers are not contained in the Ondo State High Court Civil Procedure Rules. The said fee is a hidden charge and same is unacceptable and illegal.

“We have resolved to boycott the courts in Ondo State, and this we shall do in agreement with other branches of the Bar.”

  • Support Abiodun’s re-election bid, Olu of Ilaro urges Yewa people

Support Abiodun’s re-election bid, Olu of Ilaro urges Yewa people

The Olu of Ilaro and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, has enjoined sons and daughters of Yewaland to support the re-election bid of Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun.

He spoke when he received Governor Abiodun and his campaign train at his palace in Ilaro at the weekend.

The monarch said the March 11 poll should not be about voting for the son of the soil, but about voting for the continued prosperity of the state under the leadership of the incumbent governor.

He noted that the forthcoming election would not be only about politics, but about what could be seen on ground.

He urged the people of Yewaland to reject the candidacy of someone, whose support was coming from a former governor, who, during his eight-year tenure, did not finish the projects he started across Yewaland.

“It is not a matter of politics, it is about what is on ground. For eight years before you came, I can’t point to anything that your predecessor started and completed, yet, he is saying we should vote for someone. Except if we want to lie to ourselves, that type of person cannot come out and tell us what to do.

“We can’t afford to give the governorship to another party, it is not this time when we have the All Progressives Congress at the federal level, that all our National Assembly members are also from the All Progressives Congress, and that someone will be saying it is another party. It is clear to us, it is not about someone being our kinsman, let us think about it, don’t vote for kinsman, even our ancestors are not in support, vote for continuity through Dapo Abiodun.

“The election on Saturday should surprise them, we are doing politics of development, it is not about us, it is about development. Let Dapo Abiodun do his second term, let us support him,” he said.

Oba Olugbenle while calling on the senators and members of the House of Representatives elected from Ogun West to come together and help look at the issue of Idogo rail line, said the rail line, if completed, would help boost the socio-economic development of the people of Yewaland.

“You will have to work together, our senator and members, House of Representatives elected from Ogun West, Idogo rail line from Ifo has been taken away again, what is our sin? Your Excellency, help us to ask them what we have done again in Abuja.

“It is part of the national network of rail lines, why was it abandoned? Are we not part of Nigeria again? That rail line is viable to link some African countries,” the monarch said.

Governor Abiodun, noting that he would continue to be just, fair and equitable, added that his promise not to develop any part of the state at the expense of others would still be respected.

Abiodun, who noted that the Ilaro-Owode road would soon be completed by his administration, said his administration through its transport master plan was determined to ensure that all parts of the state were connected by adequate road network.

The governor, who said the monarch and the people of Yewaland would soon see his administration begin work on the Idogo rail line as well as other rail lines in the state, informed the monarchs that the reconstruction of the Sagamu-Papalanto-Ilaro-Ogbele road had been approved by the Federal Executive Council.

He said the contract for the reconstruction of the road had been awarded, noting that the project, which was in partnership with the Ogun State Government, Aliko Dangote and the Federal Government, would be done using the tax credit scheme.

“You will soon get our invitation to join us in doing the groundbreaking of the Sagamu-Papalanto-Ilaro-Ogbele road, which has finally been approved by the Federal Executive Council.

“It is a partnership between the state government, Aliko Dangote and the Federal Government, using the tax credit scheme.”

“By the grace of God, once we finish our elections, I will inform you so that we go there and perform the ceremony. That road is going to be a dual carriage way all the way from Sagamu to Ogbele and it’s going to be in reinforced concrete, that will be the first reinforced concrete dual carriage way in the state.

“That will mean that those travelling from Lagos-Ibadan coming to Ilaro will no longer need to come to Abeokuta, they will just come straight all the way to Papalanto to Ilaro, connect to of course the new Ilaro-Owode road. Very soon the entire Yewaland is going to be wearing a new look,” he said.

He added that more of such partnerships would be entered into for the overall development of the state, stressing that the sincerity of purpose and commitment shown by his administration would ensure the overall development of the state in partnership with the private sector.

“Kabiyesi, one would wonder how this didn’t happen before, it is a question to answer. There were administrations here in the state, Kabiyesi, the answer to that is that we have shown a lot of commitment, we have demonstrated sincerity of purpose, we have earned the trust between us and the private sector, they now believe in us.

“Dangote is doing roads in Lagos, he is doing different things everywhere else, but as soon as I assumed office, I beckoned to him and requested that he partnered us to do this road and he accepted because he believed in this administration. And we have also been in partnership with so many other private institutions to construct roads, build hospitals, primary health care centres, donate ambulances, the list is endless.

“Kabiyesi, by the grace of God, we will continue to see this kind of partnership that will further strengthen and help us in building the future of this great state together,” he stated

Abiodun, while calling on the people of Yewaland to vote him for a second term, disclosed that the script being acted by the former governor, who did not complete any project started in Yewaland, should be thrown away.

“How can someone be saying he is the person that is going to determine who is going to be your governor from Ogun West, I mean, it doesn’t happen like that.

“This same character did the same thing in 2019 when he was in office and he failed woefully because his intentions were not noble. Now you dropped that person used in 2019 and picked someone else again and said this is the person he wants to use to be governor in 2023. Obviously he is still seeking to see how he can extend his tenure in office after finishing his eight years.”

The group, in a statement by its National coordinator, Princess Oby Onu, congratulated Tinubu and described his victory as well deserved.

    • Urge voters to replicate last outing in assembly polls

Thousands of women professionals from Kogi Central Senatorial District, yesterday, trooped out to express their gratitude to voters for massive vote for the All Progressives Congress’ candidates in the just concluded Presidential and National Assembly elections.

The women, who thanked Kogites and Governor Yahaya Bello for the peaceful conduct of the election, said the ‘Thank You’ road walk became necessary to demonstrate that women in central and in the state, generally, were solidly in support of the Governor for giving them the share of voice they had been clamouring for, for years, and to urge him to do more.

Led by notable women professionals in the district, the Kogi Central women took off from Okene Local Government Secretariat, walked through the newly built Reference Hospital, down to Total, and back to the Secretariat, chanting thank you and victory songs as they marched through the streets.

They prayed loudly against what they termed evil spirits that might have been invoked by desperate politicians, saying that “darkness would never overcome light.”

Kogi State Coordinator, APC Professional Women Council, Hajia Rekiyat Onaivo, urged Kogi women to replicate their last outing by coming out en masse to vote for APC candidates in the Saturday House of Assembly election.

She said the large turnout during the last election was an indication that women in Kogi central appreciated Governor Bello’s result-oriented women inclusive governance.

Executive Director Kogi Enterprise Development Agency (KEDA) Onaivo Sanni, enjoined women to support the current administration to enable it deliver more dividends of democracy, assuring that the Senator-elect, Abubakar Sadiku Ohere, would give good representation at the National Assembly.

The Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, Anne Olurinde, hailed the state government for making the state’s resources work for the people, noting that the infrastructure projects undertaken by Governor Bello’s administration were unprecedented in the history of the state.

She said Kogites had enjoyed peace since the Governor assumed office and that, though journalists must be neutral, they also owed the state and the entire nation the duty of responsible journalism devoid of unfounded panic reporting.

“We monitored the elections, and considering what Kogi State elections have been like for decades, we can conveniently say it was very peaceful. The elections were free and fair,” Olurinde said.

She urged aggrieved parties to seek redress in court.

“We refuse to be willing tools in the hands of politicians who are always painting one-sided picture of happenings in the state with sensational social media posts for selfish interests,” the NAWOJ Chairperson stated, adding “As the Chairman of the National Association of Women Journalists, Kogi State Chapter, I want to say we are very happy with the administration of Governor Bello. He is undoubtedly the only governor in Nigeria that has given women the strongest voice in governance. There are so many awards in this regard to attest to this.

“His ADC is a woman, his SSG (Secretary to the State Government) is a woman, HOS (head of Service) is a woman, and all the vice chairmen of local governments are women, among other top positions. I understand there are over 30 very senior female appointees currently. Don’t forget that he also appointed the first female Director-General of a presidential campaign organisation. I can go on and on. So I can understand why women in Kogi Central have trooped out like this today to demonstrate their solidarity with him.”

Paint firm unveils electrical, building materials city in Port Harcourt

Revelation Paints Limited has  begun the building  of a  shopping complex within the electrical/building materials city in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.. The complex   will contain 1,720 lock-up shops on completion.

Situated on Kilometre 17, Aba /Port-Harcourt express road, Irebe Commercial neighbourhood in Port Harcourt, the massive project which is very unique in the countr’s commercial real estate investment industry known as: Revelation Electrical/Building Materials City, apart from the 1,720 lock-up shops, will also contain warehouses, restaurants and complimentary offices that will support the business community.

The developer has  developed about 600 shops, and members of the Electrical Dealers Market  Association in Okija, Port Harcourt, have bought into the project.

They are expected to take over 70/80 per cent of all the lock-up shops because they are relocating to the new site from their present  Okija location in Port Harcourt.

Presently, rent ranges from N500,000 to N600,000 per annum but it is expected that by the time all the traders move there, the rent would go up.

On the new shopping complex, the Managing Partner, MI Okoro & Associates, Dr. Chief Meckson Innocent Okoro, whose  firm is the sole marketer of the Shopping Complex, implored  members of the public to buy into the project which he described as ‘a unique investment opportunity because the capital outlay required for this class of real estate investment is quite small and Polaris Bank Ltd is on ground to support buyers with Mortgage facility funding’.

According to him, members of the public are being encouraged to invest in this shopping complex now because once the businessmen from Okija  move to the new location, then competition for space will become more competitive because lock-up shops will become very limited in supply and there will be a constant rising demand for them, and then the price will continue to rise. Whoever invests in it now will know that he or she is investing in a viable real estate investment.’

While revealing that, by undertaking the construction of the shopping complex, Revelation Paints Limited was trying to do something unique which will become a model for others, Okoro explained that the promotional price for the shops which would last till April is on and that it is N4.5 million for ground floor while 1st floor is 4 million and you buy a form and non-refundable fee of N20,000.  Polaris Bank is willing to give 80 per cent mortgage as soon as the buyer pays initial equity of 20% of the cost, provided the buyer is bankable.

The real estate mogul  said that the new Electrical and Building Materials City will be opened within the first week  of next month  for business activities to commence.

Arrangement is in top gear to organise an investment golf tournament in the golf section of Port Harcourt Club 1928, on  March 18, with a view to attracting possible investors.

Also, the General Overseer of OPM, Apostle Chibuzor Gift Chinyere, will be featuring a one-day crusade at the new city to usher in the Electrical Material Dealers Association to its new site.

  • The Compatriots to INEC: Correct lapses before state elections

The Compatriots to INEC: Correct lapses before state elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday got a wake-up call from The Compatriots:  rectify all the lapses observed in the February 25 presidential and  National Assembliy elections.

The group also urged the electoral agency  to  use same to conduct a hitch-free  governorship and state assemblies  polls on Saturday.

The Compatriots is made up of elder statesmen.

In a post-election statement by its Chairman and former Governor of Akwa-Ibom State, Obong Victor Attah, the group applauded Nigerians for what it called  their enthusiastic and orderly participation in the just-concluded national elections and urged them to sustain the tempo in the forthcoming state polls.

“It is clear that a lot of work needs to be done to restore confidence in the systems and processes of INEC. With the State-level elections holding this week, it is very important that all faulty systems and processes of INEC be rectified; that all preparations as well as provision of security are seriously addressed,” the statement reads in part.

The socio-political and good governance advocacy group, however, expressed grave concern over reports of violence in some parts of the country as well as “the  adverse impact of election management which left much to be improved upon because of the process gaps and lack of transparency during the collation of the results”.

Obong Attah noted that mass participation of the youth in the electoral process remains an encouraging development for the political future of the country.

The Chairman praised aggrieved presidential candidates for  exploring  legal window to challenge the outcome of the result.

He said: “The Compatriots note with deep regret the violence in some areas and loss of lives associated with the process during the voting on election day. Nigerians died during the election on the 25th including the Youth Corpers in Rivers State. Based on media reports, they were killed by thugs during election for refusing to compromise the process. These Corpers are heroes of our aspiring nation. While we pray for the repose of the souls of all those who lost their lives and for their families who must now cope with this unimaginable loss, we urge that no effort be spared to bring the culprits to justice.

“The global expectation for democratic elections is that they will be transparent, free, fair, and credible. Only an election that reflects the sovereign will of the electorate can convey legitimacy on any government.

“We therefore note with regret that our elections were tarnished by process failures and lack of transparency.  Now that the first phase of the process is over, the contestants have either decided to affirm their victories or challenge their loss in court. The decision of aggrieved contestants to seek redress through the courts reinforces the foundation of our democratic system and the rule of law. It is critical to the sustainability of our system that the judiciary is impartial and retains credibility with the people. It is therefore vital that the judiciary dispense justice in a manner that reflects impartiality and consistency with the merits of the cases”.

The group said much work was needed to restore confidence in the systems and processes of the electoral body, even as it called on Nigerians not to despair, remain law-bidding and once again go out in large numbers to exercise their inalienable sovereign rights to elect their leaders and representatives during the March 11 state elections.
