    NDDC inaugurates 2024 budget committee

Niger Delta Development Commission, (NDDC) has inaugurated a 16-member budget committee to prepare its 2024 budget through engagements with stakeholders.

Managing Director Dr. Samuel Ogbuku inaugurated the committee at the NDDC headquarters in Port Harcourt yesterday.

Ogbuku in a statement signed by the commission’s Corporate Affairs Director, Dr. Ibitoye Abosede, said the committee must first identify the vision of the NDDC as an interventionist agency  to prioritise the allocation of available resources.

He said: “As a committee, the first thing you must do is to come up with and articulate what our vision for 2024 is. It is our vision that will determine our budget. Let’s look at a budget that can be implemented; a budget that will capture our present reality; a legacy budget.

“Our vision must be clear. So that in implementing our budget, we will be properly guided. To achieve this, we must have a stakeholder’s conference to get their buy-in. We are not doing it for ourselves, but for the collective benefit of stakeholders of the Niger Delta region.

”It is our vision that we are going to propagate and sell to stakeholders for easier buy-in. If we don’t have this stakeholders’ conference for us to have a common vision, whatever we present is going to be distorted at the end of the day.”

Ogbuku said the 2024 NDDC budget should strike a balance in funding new projects, ongoing projects, and debt financing to get the buy-in of stakeholders, insisting that the committee must actively engage stakeholders in their activities.

He stressed that the budget should be properly captioned to highlight the underpinning philosophy behind it.

He said:  “We must capture our current reality of indebtedness, while making provisions for the implementation of the projects in our vision.

“We must look at the size of our budget. It must be realistic and implementable, and should capture our debt profile with provision for debt servicing. However, it must strike a balance, such that the huge debt burden does not distort our budget.”

The Secretary of the committee and the NDDC Acting Director Planning, Mr. Davies Okarevu, explained that the state offices of the commission would be fully involved in the budgetary process, noting that efforts would be made to ensure that the commission produced an all-inclusive budget.

The 16-member Budget Committee is led by the NDDC Managing Director as its Chairman, with the commission’s Executive Director, Finance and Administration, Maj.-Gen. Charles Airhiavbere (rtd) as the committee’s alternate Chairman.

    Non-indigenes back Abiodun’s re-election bid

Non-indigenes living in Ogun State have endorsed Governor Dapo Abiodun for a second term.

The non-indigenes, made up of Igede, Fulani, Igbo, Nupe and Hausa people, spoke yesterday through their leaders at an engagement with Governor Abiodun in Abeokuta.

They said they would work together to ensure the success of the governor at the forthcoming governorship and House of Assembly polls.

Speaking on behalf of the Igede community, Onuna Samuel appreciated the governor for creating an enabling environment for them to thrive in the state.

He noted that the Igede community was prepared to give their 100 per cent commitment to the second term ambition of Abiodun.

The Nupe community, led by Alhaji Mustapha Nasir, said his people had been solidly behind the governor since 2019, adding that they would ensure they delivered votes from the community for the governor.

Jay Okocha, who spoke on behalf of the Igbo community, said they would ensure they delivered their votes for the governor’s re-election.

Okocha, calling on the people of the state to vote for continuity to ensure the completion of the Ogun State International Agro Cargo Airport, assured the governor of votes from the community.

The Chairman, Inter-Ethnic Campaign Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Alhaji Shehu Usman, said the committee had empowered about 2,800 women with cash donations and foodstuff.

He assured the governor of the commitment of the Arewa community towards his second term ambition.

Abiodun thanked the non-indigenes for trooping out in their large numbers during the last Presidential and National Assembly elections.

He said his administration would absorb about 500 non-indigenes resident in the state into its social investment programme.

The governor said the social investment workers, who would act as the ears and eyes of his administration at the grassroots, would be placed on stipends.

He urged the non-indigenes to continue to support the APC in the state, advising them to surpass their last performance in terms of votes cast.

“I want to thank you for what you did last Saturday. Let me tell you the challenges we now have. We’ve done so well in Ogun State, we are the envy of a lot of other states.

“We must surpass what we did last Saturday. We have to surpass it, we have to sustain and surpass it and I can only do that with your support and commitment,” he said.

  • You’re an irrelevant political parasite, Oyo PDP replies Shittu

You’re an irrelevant political parasite, Oyo PDP replies Shittu

The ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State has described a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu, as a political parasite, who had zero electoral value, but was privileged to secure his last ministerial appointment based on personal relationship with President Muhammadu Buhari.

It was reacting to a statement credited to the Director General, Asiwaju Tinubu-Shettima Coalition for Good Governance (ATSCGG), Adebayo Shittu, in some sections of the media yesterday where he made what the party tagged ‘spurious, unfounded, petty and cheap’ allegations against Governor Seyi Makinde.

A statement yesterday by the Publicity Secretary of PDP in Oyo State, Akeem Olatunji, advised Shittu to wake up from daydreaming, as the people of the state were aware of the dynamics that birthed the outcome of the last National Assembly election in the state.

Describing Shittu as a political parasite and liability to any political party, Oyo PDP said the former minister only enjoyed political patronage on account of personal relationship with President Buhari, not on the grounds of political relevance.

  • APC to Makinde: Tinubu never endorsed you

APC to Makinde: Tinubu never endorsed you

Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned Governor Seyi Makinde and his supporters to desist from making false claims about having the endorsement of President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu, ahead of next Saturday’s governorship election.

It described the claim as height of desperation and insincerity.

APC alleged that there had been insinuations from Agodi Government House that Governor Makinde played a key role in the victory of Tinubu in Oyo State last Saturday when he polled 449,884 votes to defeat the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s (LP’s) standard-bearer, Peter Obi, New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso and others.

A statement by Oyo APC Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, queried the rationale behind the insinuations about Governor Makinde being responsible for the delivery of the three senatorial and eight House of Representatives seats to the APC (while two are still pending) in the same election where PDP also fielded its best candidates, whose electioneering the governor campaigned for and funded heavily.

He said: “Those behind the wicked rumour are some unscrupulous elements, whose motive is to mislead the public and attract undue sympathy from certain quarters outside the state.

“To set the record straight, Oyo PDP did its best to secure victory for its candidates in last Saturday’s election, but it failed because Oyo APC was far ahead of it in terms of preparedness, human resources and strategy.

“We, therefore, challenge Governor Makinde or any of his agents to present any evidence of the purported agreement or deal between them and Asiwaju Tinubu if they are truthful.”

In the same vein, Oyo APC has raised the alarm over alleged reports of some agents of the ruling PDP moving round public primary and secondary schools to mislead teaching and non-teaching workers, as they fabricate all sorts of lies against the governorship candidate of the APC, Sen. Teslim Folarin.

“We are using this medium to disabuse the minds of public servants. Sen. Folarin, if elected, will not only ensure prompt and full payment of salaries and other entitlements due to public servants and pensioners, but will do more to make life easier for all and sundry.”

  • Southwest APC rallies support for party’s governorship, assembly candidates

Southwest APC rallies support for party’s governorship, assembly candidates

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Southwest has felicitated the president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on his victory at the polls, describing it as victory well-deserved.

The party in a statement by its Zonal Publicity Secretary, Mr. Ayo Afolabi, said Tinubu’s victory was a result of his firm belief in Nigeria, which he had proved over the years through the bridges he had been building across the Niger, his doggedness, kind nature, determination and courage to surmount challenges.

Afolabi described Tinubu’s journey to Aso Rock as long and tortuous, but which ended well by God’s grace and mercy.

He said Tinubu’s election at this critical time is most apposite, stressing that Nigeria needs a leader of Tinubu’s virtues and courage to change the fortunes of the country.

Well known for his unusual ability to convert potential to practical gains, the APC said it was not in doubt that the former Lagos State governor would unite Nigerians and prioritise ideas and activities that would revive the economy, thereby creating opportunities for all, irrespective of language, religion and geographical location.

The party thanked Nigerians, particularly those resident in the Southwest, for voting massively for the APC candidates in the last election, urging them to look forward to economic prosperity and improved security.

The APC called on voters in the region to repeat the same love for the party by massively voting for its governorship candidates in Lagos State, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Dapo Abiodun (Ogun); Teslim Folarin (Oyo) and House of Assembly candidates in the six Southwest states in the March 11 election.

Afolabi said the region would enjoy greater development by ensuring that all APC candidates were elected again to make the job of governance easy for all elected officials at the federal and state levels. That way, the APC emphasised that development would be achieved more speedily across the region.
