  • How to resolve presidential election dispute, by Ezeife

How to resolve presidential election dispute, by Ezeife

    • No need to cancel poll, says ex-Anambra governor

A former Anambra State Governor Chukwuemeka Ezeife has said cancellation of last Saturday’s presidential election is not the best way to resolve the controversy it has thrown up.

Speaking yesterday during a programme on Arise TV, Ezeife said the huge cost of conducting another election would weigh heavily on the nation’s purse.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Wednesday, declared the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Tinubu, winner of the presidential election.

But Ezeife noted that despite alleged manipulations, the election showed there is still hope for a new Nigeria.

“The presidential election revealed so many things to Nigerians, and I thank God for that. I thank all the foreign powers who commented on the election and condemned the integrity of the election.

“We thank the Yoruba, we thank the Hausa, and we thank every group in Nigeria for this openness. We are Nigerians. I think that is the message. Don’t mind the manipulation.

“One must distinguish between the election as conducted and the election as reported. What to do? Some foreign countries are calling for the cancellation. For me, I don’t really think that is the only solution because it costs money.

“How much did we spend in this election? What we have to do is to go back to the documents, go back to all the systems we used and look at the correct results that came out, especially which came out before the problem arose or before the stoppage of the uploading.

“We look at it and declare results based on those results. There is no point going to waste more money. I believe this election has given hope for one Nigeria,” he said.

Ezeife urged Nigerians to come together for a better system, adding that a new Nigeria is still possible.

The Labour Party (LP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had earlier called for the cancellation of the election and the resignation of INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

While the results were being announced, agents of the Labour Party (LP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had alleged manipulation of the result.  They, therefore, staged a walk out from the venue of the announcement.

Also, the candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, on Thursday, claimed that the election was not free and fair.

But according to Dujarric, Nigeria has a strong history of peaceful transition of power.

He said the UN had offered technical support to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), adding that the aid yielded “some” results.

Dujarric said although the UN did not play a role in observing the elections, he said it is common for tensions to arise whenever results do not sit well with the people.

“It is important at this point in any election, in any country, and we’ve seen it in the north, we’ve seen it in the south and east and west. We’ve seen issues of great tension following elections when people didn’t accept the results.”

Dujarric called for calm in the country, saying it would take a process to see desired results.

He added that the legal use of seeking solutions to the problems arising from the election results would play a role in stabilising the country.

“It is important that all stakeholders work for the better, for the stability of the country and use existing legal and constitutional channels to challenge, if they so wish, any election results,” the UN spokesperson said.

“What is important is that as in any election, any… that if any candidate or group of candidates has an issue with the results that they go through the established legal and constitutional channels to work out their challenges.

“And it is very important for everyone to remain calm as that process or these processes play out.”

    Asari-Dokubo praises Wike, attacks Amaechi

Alh. Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, the foremost Niger Delta freedom fighter, celebrated Tinubu’s victory at his hometown in Buguma, Rivers State.

In a unique celebration, Dokubo, who poured white powder all over his body, denounced the alleged roles a former Transport Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, played against Tinubu during the election.

But he heaped praises on the Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike, for fulfilling his promises

Dokubo while addressing his supporters said: “How is Chibuike Amaechi feeling in his house? Wike is a man. Wike was my enemy before. But now he is no longer my enemy. Wike is the lion that protects the city. He is a warrior. Amaechi has failed”.

Dokubo, in their solidarity songs, poured encomiums on Wike but lampooned Amaechi for allegedly working against the victory of Tinubu.

The freedom fighter had before the election vowed to work for Tinubu, whom he described as his bossom friend.  He had testified how the former Lagos State Governor assisted him in his time of need.

Cocoa farmers: Accept outcome of presidential election

The Cocoa and Plantain Farmers Association of Nigeria (CFAN) has appealed to presidential candidates of both the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party, Peter Obi and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, to allow peace reign in the country by accepting the outcome of last Saturday’s general elections.

It urged them to cooperate with the president-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu to make Nigeria a better place and the country prosperous.

The group also urged former president Olusegun Obasanjo to put himself in the position of an elder statesman and work for the peace and prosperity of the country.

CFAN’s president, Chief Ayodele Ojo Falabona, in a statement issued in Akure, advised clerics to stop using the name of God to deceive Nigerians especially in electoral contests.

“We thank some of our clergy men who didn’t say what they didn’t see. We are begging Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to put himself in the position of Gowon, Abdusalama and Goodluck Jonathan and stop being envious as well as self-centered because he’s nothing before God.

Falabona assured Nigerians that Tinubu would turn the fortunes of the country around in all sectors of the economy.

The cocoa farmer appealed to Tinubu to invest much in agriculture especially in the cocoa industry as it remained the best source of curbing unemployment.

“Asiwaju has never changed party and he will always support anyone who wants to contest under the party. He endures and he understands politics, He forgives easily and has no enemy.”

Okorie to Nigerians: Rally round president-elect

Former National Chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Chekwas Okorie, has urged Nigerians to support the President – Elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a successful administration.

Okorie while congratulating Tinubu over his victory at last Saturday’s presidential election said: “I congratulate Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu on his victory at the 2023 presidential election in Nigeria. The election was keenly contested and the use of technology showed a balanced election results different from what used to be the case. The outcome of the elections has also thrown up a more balanced National Assembly. Nigerians should expect a more robust and vibrant 10th National Assembly.

A statement issued by him on Thursday said: “It is with every sense of responsibility and patriotism that, l appeal to those whose preferred candidates did not win the 2023 presidential election to accept and respect the mandate given to the president-elect by the majority of Nigerian voters. This is what democracy is all about.

“In the same token, l appeal to all the contestants for the office of President of Nigeria, who may be aggrieved by the outcome of the election to avail themselves of the available legal window to address their grievances. Any resort to self-help will not be in the interest of anybody.

“l urge all well-meaning Nigerians to rally round Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu to succeed in his onerous task to tackle Nigeria’s multifaceted challenges. His success will definitely translate to our collective success as a nation”.

“I urge the president-elect to take immediate steps to bind the open wounds that have caused a lot of division, suspicion and alienation among Nigerian citizens. This is a sine qua non to the success of any policy he may enunciate to promote and grow the economy as well as provide jobs and other democracy dividends to the Nigerian people. I am confident that the well-known political sagacity and savvy of Tinubu, shall be put to maximum use at this time”.

    SDP: We won’t challenge

    presidential election result

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has said that it will not challenge the declared results of the presidential election.

The party, which won some senatorial and House of Representatives seats in last Saturday’s elections, however said, it will be contesting results of the Senate and House of Representatives seats.

National Chairman of SDP, Alhaji Shehu Gabam who stated this during a press conference at the party’s headquarters on Thursday, said his party won many seats, but was denied adding that they are going to challenge the results of such places in the court.

“The National leadership of our great party, the Social Democratic Party (SDP), heartily congratulates all Nigerians for the peaceful and successful presidential and national assembly elections that took place on Saturday, February 25, 2023, and His Excellency, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress candidate for winning the keenly contested Presidential election.

“The 2023 presidential election turned out with the most unique outcome, considering the national spread and the equal number of states won by the three leading candidates. Also, it’s noteworthy that it came out as having the lowest voter turn-out in the recent history of presidential elections in Nigeria, with less than a total of 25 million votes out of over 90 million registered voters nationwide!

    He will transform

    Nigeria, says Isijola

A chieftain of the APC, in Ondo State, and coordinator of the Teni Teni support group for the Asiwaju/Shettima Campaign, Otunba Rasak Isijola, has congratulated Tinubu, on winning the presidential election.

Isijola, who is the immediate past vice chairman of the APC in Ondo State, stated this in a congratulatory message issued by the group to the president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

He said with Tinubu and Shettima’s victory, Nigeria will be better for it. “Citizens will no longer go abroad in search of greener pastures as there will be an enabling environment for everyone to maximize their potential,” he added.

Isijola said Tinubu’s presidency will continue to build on the legacy of President Muhammadu Buhari in the areas of agriculture, infrastructure development, social intervention project, and youth and women empowerment amongst others across the federation.

He said: “As a two-term Governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu turned around the economy of the state and put it on a continuous and sustainable growth trajectory, while Shettima on the other hand as governor of Borno State, the state witnessed monumental strides despite the threats posed by Boko Haram and other terrorist groups.”

  • We’ll meet in court, APC PCC replies Obi

We’ll meet in court, APC PCC replies Obi

All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council ( APC PCC)  has said the ruling party is ready to meet in court with the presidential candidate of the Labour  Party(LP),  Peter Obi.

Obi, at a news conference in Abuja yesterday said he would challenge the process that produced   Asiwaju BolaTinubu as the winner of last Saturday’s presidential poll in court.

Director of Media and Publicity of the APC PCC, Bayo Onanuga, said: “Going to court is part of the electoral process and it is the most decent, statesman-like and civilised course of action to take.

“We salute the decision. It is surely better than calling supporters to the streets and instigating social unrest.

“Before Mr Obi goes to court, we consider it necessary to challenge some specific claims in his press address. Contrary to his statement, it is not true that the election held on 25 February was not free and fair.

“The 2023 election is one of the most transparent and peaceful elections in the history of Nigeria. It is because the process was credible that made it possible for Mr Obi’s Labour Party to record the over six million votes it got contrary to the pre-election forecast.

“That Labour Party and Mr Obi surprised bookmakers by winning in Lagos State, Nasarawa, Plateau,  Delta and Edo where there are sitting governors of either the APC or the PDP. The Labour Party also swept the entire five Southeast states under the control of either APGA, PDP or APC. “

Onanuga, in a statement, however, said the APC PCC  believes that Obi   contradicted and  “exposed himself to public ridicule by suggesting that the election was only credible in states and places his party won.”

He added: “We need us to forewarn Mr Obi that when he gets to court he should be prepared to tell the world how his party won over 90 per cent of votes in his region of Southeast while other parties got almost nothing. We have evidence of voter suppression, intimidation and harassment in the Southeast, especially of those who came out to vote for our party.

“Also, when Mr Obi gets to court, he will have to convince the court with his allegation of rigging in over 40,000 polling units across the country, especially in the Northwest and Northeast where his party had no party agents and did not sign result sheets as required by law. It is our assumption that the Labour Party will enlist PDP agents to prove its fraud claims since it is an affiliate of PDP.

“The lesson in Mr Obi’s defeat in the election is that no politician in Nigeria can win a presidential race by being a sectional and an anointed candidate of any religion.

“God created our country in a way to make it impossible for any part of the country to exist without the other. The framers of our constitution also worked to bind our country together with provisions that will make it impossible for a section of the country and any religion to have political domination over the other.

“What this means is that any aspiring politician for the presidency of Nigeria must have a Pan Nigeria appeal and strong support and must be embraced by adherents of other religions.

“Mr Obi and his party knew why they failed. They knew they had no path to victory with their negative and dangerous campaign.

“We owe Labour Party and Peter Obi the blunt truth: They failed in the election. No amount of red-herring and misinformation about the election and the outcome can obliterate this reality.”

“The President-Elect who was the candidate of our party won a Pan Nigeria mandate in a free, fair and credible election. He is ready and prepared to assume office so he can serve the people of our country with sincerity and honour.”

  • Peter Obi heads to court, says he won Feb 25 presidential poll

Peter Obi heads to court, says he won Feb 25 presidential poll

Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi yesterday vowed to challenge the outcome of the election in court.

He said he would resist pressure by anybody to abandon his quest to seek redress in court.

The Anamabra State former governor said the election was not free and fair.

He called on Nigerians and his supporters to be law abiding, adding that they should not indulge in violence.

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, was declared winner of the election by the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmood Yakubu.

Tinubu polled 8.8 million votes to defeat his closest rivals – Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Obi of LP and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP).

Atiku polled 6,984,520; Obi garnered 6,101,533 votes while Kwankwaso polled 1,476,697.

An emotional Obi told reporters in Abuja that he would reclaim his mandate.

The LP candidate said the poll election would go down as the most controversial in the history of Nigeria.

Obi, who made his first public appearance since the elections, insisted that the battle will shift to the court.

He also berated INEC for conducting the “worst elections in Nigeria’s history”, which he said, fell below the minimum standards.

He said the judiciary will do justice, recalling that he was one of the beneficiaries of the judiciary, having reclaimed his stolen mandates through the court.

Obi explained that the meeting with the PDP and other parties was not a merger but an exchange of ideas on a way forward in national interest.

Obi said: “We won the election. We will explore all legal action to reclaim our mandate. Nigeria cannot conduct an election 63 years after independence and it will be like this.

“It is a clear violation of the electoral rule and guidelines that we were assured of.

“It will go down as the most controversial election ever conducted in Nigeria. Let me appeal to all Nigerians to remain peaceful and humble. I assure you that this is not the end, but the beginning of a journey for a better and a new Nigeria.

“We want a New Nigeria built on honesty, fairness and justice. We will do the right thing to gather confidence to lead. Leaders should not act rascally and deliberately discard the rule of law.

“We insisted that we will be governed by the rule of law. We will explore all legal action to reclaim our mandate. We won the election. We will build a country.

“Myself and Datti are committed to a new Nigeria. I don’t know how they feel now, but the unwanted attacks showed that a new Nigeria was possible. seeing Jenifer who was attacked but ensured she voted.”

Obi said he was not in alliance with any political party.

He said: “We are not in talk with other parties. We are meeting as aggrieved parties. If we use the process we used today in the election, how are we going to arrest the kidnappers? On this issue, I am challenging the process.”

  • Tinubu’s reconciliation panel to reach Atiku, Obi, Kwankwaso, says Akeredolu

Tinubu’s reconciliation panel to reach Atiku, Obi, Kwankwaso, says Akeredolu

GOING by the words of Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised a reconciliation committee to reach out to those its presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, defeated in the February 25 presidential poll.

The Committee of Elders has been set up to meet with Abubakar Atiku of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi of the Labour Party (PDP) and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and other candidates in a bid to assuage their loss.

According to Akeredolu, every aggrieved person would be reached out to for talks.

THe governor spoke in Abuja, according to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Richard Olatunde, a day after Asiwaju Tinubu extended hands of fellowship to other contenders.

In his acceptance speech, the president-elect hinted of a plan to carry along every stakeholder in his build to take Nigeria into loftier heights.

He said: “To my fellow candidates, former VP Atiku, former Governor Kwankwaso, former Governor Obi and all others, I extend the hand of friendship. This was a competitive, high-spirited campaign.

“You have my utmost respect. Political competition must now give way to political conciliation and inclusive governance.

“During the election, you may have been my opponent but you were never my enemy.  In my heart, you are my brothers”.

Speaking at the International Conference Centre, venue of the presentation of Certificate of Return to the  President-elect and the Vice president-elect, Senator Kashim Shetima, Akeredolu said the outcome of last Saturday’s election reflected the wishes of the electorate.

The statement reads: “The President-elect has set up committees to meet with the gentlemen who contested in the election for us to start the healing process. I belong to one of the committees. We are going to meet them and appeal to them so that we can work together.

“This is an election that was not padded. people who voted were counted, that is the way I see it, is not one which shows millions of votes. You can see the candidates, everyone won 12 states each, it has never been like that before.

“Ondo People are progressives and we will always at least be on the side of progressivism. From the onset we are at the forefront of clamour for a Southern President and so we have to put everything we had into it and we got support that is why we are able to make it.”
