Nasarawa West Senator-elect preaches total submission

Senator-elect for Nasarawa West district Ahmed Wadada, has urged Muslims to take advantage of the Ramadan period to exhibit the acts of total submission to the will of Allah and sacrifice.

Wadada said this yesterday in an interview with newsmen in Keffi town, Keffi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State on the ongoing Ramadan fast.

According to the Senator-elect, Muslims across the country and the world must take advantage of the Ramadan season and pray fervently for sustainable peace and unity.

“Ramadan period is a season whereby Muslims embark on daily fasting for 30 days from sunrise to sunset to show total submission and sacrifice to the will of Allah.

“You can only observe the Ramadan period if you have fully submitted yourself to Allah. It also signifies sacrifice,” Wadada said.

He said the holy period also provides a prime opportunity to unify the people, adding, ”because they are now acting in unison by engaging in fasting and prayers together.

“He is fasting. You are fasting. She is fasting. They are fasting. So, it unifies the people because they are now acting in unison,” he said.

According to Wadada, the Ramadan period should not just be carried out and forgotten easily but should have a positive impact on the lives of Muslims who participated in the fasting.

“A Muslim that sacrifices, unifies and submits will ensure orderly happenings in his or her dealings whatsoever.

“So, if you are a good Muslim that knows what the holy Ramadan period connotes, then you cannot be seen treating anybody unjustly, ” he said.

Wadada said that a good Muslim during Ramadan fast would naturally be fair and just in whatever he was doing whether in politics, trading, teaching, coaching or in his matrimonial life.

“You will not be acting ungodly to anybody regardless of his religious, political and tribal background, you will try to be fair and just to all.

“So, the period of Ramadan is a period of reflection for us to always do the needful in accordance with the teachings of Allah” he said.

Balarabe advises women to immunise their children

The Kaduna State Deputy Governor, Dr Hadiza Balarabe, has advised pregnant women and nursing mothers to ensure their children are fully immunised against polio and other preventable child killer diseases.

She made this known at the annual Ramadan preaching organised by the Federation of Muslim Women Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) held at Sultan Bello Mosque, yesterday in Kaduna.

She urged the women in the state to inculcate the habit of visiting hospitals for routine checkups during and after pregnancy.

Balarabe explained that if children were not fully immunised from polio, it posed great danger to other children in the community.

“If one child contacts the polio virus, about 20 other children are susceptible to contract the disease in the community.

“Any claim that polio vaccine prevents pregnancy is false because since 1989 when the vaccine came and has been in use, there is no evidence showing that it causes infertility.

“It’s important that we all practise hygienic living by regularly cleaning our environments because it is a key in preventing the spread of diseases.

“In this state, out of  100 children, only 62 per cent are fully immunised, we need between 85-90 per cent immunisation cover for the children population to protect all children from polio virus,” Balarabe said.

She further said that the people in the state were still experiencing an outbreak of measles in some communities.

“This is due to low immunisation coverage because children that have not taken the vaccines put other children in danger.’’

The Deputy Governor expressed worry over the low skill birth attendance by women in the state, saying out of every 100 women who attended antenatal clinics, only 10 per cent gave birth in health facilities.

She described the situation as being responsible for the high rate of infant mortality in the state.

Sanwo-Olu to Muslims: imbibe Ramadan’s teachings

By Arafat Anifowoshe and Balikis Nofiu

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has enjoined Muslims to practise the lessons of Ramadan, which are compassion, love for oneself and neighbours, to make Lagos a better place.

He spoke at the weekend at the 2023 Annual Ramadan Prayer (1444 A.H) with the theme: “Indeed, After Difficulty, Comes Ease (Q94:5)”, at the State House Mosque Complex, Ikeja.

Sanwo-Olu said Muslim faithful must practise what they were taught during the Ramadan and throughout the year.

The governor, represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Hamzat, said compassion and love must be shown, while help must be rendered to those in need and “the less privileged, so that we can raise everyone’s standard across the state.”

Sanwo-Olu urged the gathering to commit President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu into the hands of the Almighty Allah for a successful tenure and to surround him with good people, who had the interest of Nigerians and the country at heart, “as he steers the ship of the country effective May 29.”

The governor, berating the high rate of vices, said it was important to re-examine the country fundamentally, noting that family structure was breaking down, “therefore the need for religious leaders to act quickly before things get out of hand, as the government alone cannot do it.”

He advised Muslim clerics to, during their sermons, preach values, good virtues and manners, among others, saying they should tell their congregation the teachings of Allah and not necessarily what they wanted to hear.

Sanwo-Olu thanked Islamic clerics and leaders for their prayers and support during the just-concluded elections, and also expressed gratitude to Lagosians for their show of love

  • THE RULE OF ‘SAHUR’

    THE RULE OF ‘SAHUR’

‘SAhur’ is an Arabic word meaning ‘awaking the night’. Its verb root is ‘Sahira’ which means to keep a night vigil. Connotatively, Sahur, as related to Ramadan, is, statutorily, an obligatory Sunnah (Sunnatul-Muakkadah) introduced by Prophet Muhammad (SAW). It is one of the major components of Ramadan fasting which, unlike Tarawih, cannot and must not be treated as a matter of choice. The essence of Sahur during Ramadan is not just to wake up for eating and drinking but also, to observe Nawafil and recite the Qur’an for the purpose of Ibadah and thorough understanding. (Nawafil is the plural of Nafilah).

Sahur is an indication of the high level of discipline injected into true Muslims during the month of Ramadan. Within the period of Sahur, Muslims are allowed to engage in all legitimate activities including spiritual and social exercises that are generally permissible in Islam. Sahur may commence from the midnight and end before Dawn (Fajr). During that period, eating and drinking legitimate edible substances are permissible in moderation.

Nawafil or supererogatory genuflexions may be observed severally according to the ability of the observer. Recitation of the Qur’an may also be done for as long as the concerned Muslims are able to do it. Meanwhile, for effective utilization, the Sahur period may be divided into three segments whereby one segment may be dedicated to the observance of Nawafil and another to the recitation of the Qur’an, while the third may be dedicated to the essential consumption of food and drinks in moderation. Whichever of these segments engages a Muslim during the Sahur must come to an end with the arrival of salatus- subhi at dawn. The observance of salatus- subhi at its right time is such an obligation that must not be interrupted by any other activity. Muslim women who may have no time for recitation of the Qur’an or observance of Nawafil because of their cooking activities during sahur will also have full reward for taking care of others in the family. In a Nutshell, Sahur is a compulsory component of Ramadan fasting which cannot be sacrificed for whatever reason.

    RAMADAN KARIM!

  • Satisfaction in Christ Alone (2)

    Satisfaction in Christ Alone (2)

    • Text: “…Whosoever drinks of this water shall thirst again… whosoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst …” John 4:13-14

    By Venerable Henry O. Adelegan

Satisfaction in Christ alone means that nothing and nobody no matter how highly placed or power wielded can give a longing satisfaction and joy, apart from Jesus Christ (Acts 17:28). The Psalmist said in Psalms 90:2 that, “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God”. He is Jehovah El-Shaddai – the All-Sufficient God and our sufficiency is in Him (2 Corinthians 3:5, 9:8; cf Genesis 17:1; John 15:5). From passage of our text, a Samaritan woman came to fetch water at a well in a town in Samaria called Sychar. Coincidentally, Jesus Christ too was by the well and needed water. He therefore requested the woman to give Him water to drink but she refused because Jesus was a Jew and she was a Samaritan (then there was intense animosity between the Jews and Samaritans which had been since the Old Testament days). Jesus Christ then told the Samaritan woman that life outside of Him for anyone, irrespective of person, power, personality, tribe, color, creed or status is a life that is laden with crass dissatisfaction.

Prior to the encounter between Jesus Christ and the Samaritan woman, she was struggling with three cardinal areas of dissatisfactions which Jesus Christ put paid to. I therefore declare by reason of divine commissioning that the Almighty God will attend to your areas of dissatisfaction too. As the Lord lives, you shall testify to His mega miracles during this year in the name of Jesus Christ. The first challenge of the woman was with her marriage. In John 4:16, Jesus told her, “Go, call your husband and come back”. The woman replied that she didn’t have a husband. Jesus Christ then told her that, “You have had five husbands, you are with the sixth one now, who is not your husband”. She was an unfortunate serial marital failure! The woman like many in the world must have enjoyed the dating and courtship at different stages of her failed marriages. She must have looked forward to the respective wedding day and honeymoon. She must have entered each marriage with high dreams and expectations. But no sooner after the doors of courtship were closed and the doors of the marriages were opened did she realize that courtship is in most cases more pleasurable than marriage. For this reason, the Samaritan woman went through the processes and rigours of hope raised and hope dashed on five occasions and was about to get into the sixth marital experience before Jesus Christ appeared and set her free.

Besides her life of marital dissatisfaction, the woman also lived an unsatisfiable life of dependence on physical things such as water in the story of our text, and bread as with the multitudes who were following Jesus Christ in John 6. According to John 4:11-12, the woman told Jesus, “Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from where will you have that living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, and his children, and his cattle?” The woman believed quite erroneously that the water of Jacob was sufficient to satisfy her thirst but Jesus pointed it out that whatever you have from this world is temporal while it is only the satisfaction from Him that is eternal (2 Corinthians 4:18).

Beloved in Christ, please note that Satisfaction in life is not based on physical things, not dependent on the things you have, what money could buy or on money, satisfaction can only come from God. Ecclesiastes 5:10 says that, “He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.” Money will buy you a bed, but not sleep, it will get you books but not brains, it will get you good food but not appetite, it will get you finery but not beauty, it will buy you medicine but not health, it will buy you luxuries but not culture, it will build for you a mansion but not a home, it will buy you amusements but not happiness and it can get you a passport to everywhere in the world but not to heaven. Money will also get you a talk of the town wedding but not a marriage. Jesus is therefore calling on you today to return to Him during this Lenten season. Please return home to Him like the Prodigal Son, come to Him soberly, ask Him to forgive your sins, surrender your water pot to Him and pray for His intervention. As the Lord lives, the joy of your marriage shall be restored and you shall continue to have reasons to celebrate and be celebrated in the name of Jesus Christ.

Prayer: Lord, have mercy on me in areas where I have trusted the arm of flesh to satisfy. Come into my life and grant me satisfaction from above in Jesus’ name.

‘Copyright Act to attract more jobs’

The Nigerian Publishers Association (NPA) has said that the Copyright Amended Bill recently signed by President Muhammadu Buhari would attract more players to the industry and give more job opportunities to improving Nigeria’s economy.

The association said the Copyright Amended Bill which repeals the Copyright Act, Cap C28, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, will give more confidence to owners of copyright materials in Nigeria and offer them a favourable climate to operate just as their counterparts enjoy same privilege elsewhere in the world.

Recall President Buhari had on March 17 assented to the Copyright Act 2022 which provides for the regulation, protection and administration of copyright.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (House of Representatives), Nasiru Baballe Ila shortly after the signing of the Bill said it will protect the rights of authors and ensure just rewards and recognition for their intellectual efforts; provide appropriate limitations and exceptions to guarantee access to creative works among others.
