THE Principal Medical Director of Gubio General Hospital, Borno State, Dr. Geidam Bulama, who was abducted March 2022 by the Islamic State of the West African Province (ISWAP), has been released.

Bulama was abducted last year, when ISWAP attacked Gubio Local Government Area which is about 70kms from Maiduguri.

According to a report, Zagazola Makama, a Counter- Insurgency Expert and Security Analyst in the Lake Chad Region, reported that during the abduction of Bulama, the insurgents had promised his wife that they would not kill him.

Sources said that the insurgents took Bulama and other abducted victims to the fringes of the Lake Chad where he was forced to treat wounded fighters and their families for several months.

A source said efforts of the state government and the security agencies led to the release of Mr Bulama.

Shortly after Bulama was released he was moved to Maiduguri where he was reunited with his family.

Before he was abducted last year, Bulama was the only doctor covering the entire Gubio Local Government Area. “It is very unfortunate that the security situation in Gubio town is deteriorating these days, as we have started witnessing Boko Haram invasion without confrontation,” a resident disclosed shortly after the abduction of Bulama.

  • The making of Delta’s day of rage

The making of Delta’s day of rage

As Nigerians battle with the naira crisis nationwide, a seeming peaceful protest over the rejection of old naira notes snowballed into a riot that consumed three banks in Delta State, Elo Edremoda reports.

AS it has become the norm in the past few weeks, by 7 am on Wednesday, February 15, long queues of people had formed at the three banks in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State. Two of the banks, Union Bank and First Bank, are located on Udu Road; the former before Jigbale Market, and the latter close to Ovwian Junction. The third, Access Bank, formerly Diamond Bank, is located about a stone’s throw from Orhuwhorun Roundabout. The three banks are no more than a minute drive away from one other.

The bank customers had gone to the banks hopeful that they would successfully make cash withdrawals or deposits. Although efforts to get the comments of individuals who were at the banks on the day of the unfortunate incident were fruitless, it was learnt that most of those who were at the banks for cash deposits were there with the old naira notes. They might have leaned on the Supreme Court’s ruling which directed that the old currencies should be used side by side the redesigned notes.

The customers were sure that the apex bank, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), would obey the Supreme Court’s ruling. The CBN had given February 10, last Friday, as deadline for the use of the old naira notes, 10 days after the first deadline for the use of the monies, expired. Hence, the people thronged the banks for their respective financial transactions, which never came to be.

After CBN’s second deadline on Friday, February 10, residents of Delta State, particularly in Udu, continued the use of the old denominations. However, by Tuesday, February 14, several institutions, both private and government-owned, began to reject the old naira notes. Okada (commercial motorcycle) riders, tricycle operators and buses began to reject the old currencies. They said they could no longer accept them because filling stations were no longer accepting them. The same went for traders in markets and shop owners.

Angered by the development, especially with the poor sales due to cash scarcity, market women reportedly demanded the collection of the old naira notes in protest. But an irate mob comprising youths reportedly hijacked the peaceful protest, destroying automated teller machines (ATMs) of the banks, burning down parts of the buildings and two vehicles at the premises of Union Bank, carting away properties as well as setting bonfires across the major roads.

Several traders at the nearby Jigbale Market abandoned their goods as they scampered into safety.

    Eyewitness accounts

It was a near herculean task getting residents to narrate what transpired on that fateful Wednesday, as they were not willing to make comments when approached. As the reporter walked along Udu Road and on to Orhuwhorun Junction, where the ruined banks are located, she stopped at intervals to get eyewitness accounts of the mayhem unleashed by the suspected hoodlums, but most of them claimed not to have been around when the attackers struck. Others adamantly declined making comments.

After several brick walls, a trader close to the Union Bank agreed to speak.

The trader said: “Market women were doing a peaceful protest with calls that the old naira notes be collected. A while later, some boys began to protest wildly. The riot policemen at Access Bank shot into the air and they ran into the bank. But before then, it would seem that some staff of the bank had been told to leave. Before they knew what was happening, the mob had started destroying things in the bank.

“The first set of soldiers that came talked to them peacefully. The second set that came shot teargas, slapped anyone they saw and picked up some persons. In the process of shooting, a flying bullet hit someone on the leg. People were just running up and down. It was not a laughing matter at all.

“At Union bank, some boys came in a Keke NAPEP (commercial tricycle) and drove around the place. After some time, a staff that was standing in front of the Union Bank branch was dragged and beaten up. They invaded and destroyed items inside the bank. They burnt the ATM and went inside to collect laptops.”

Another source disclosed that the incident started around 10 a.m. at Access Bank.

The said: “When they first got here (Union Bank), the security people drove them away. But as soon as they left, the boys returned and started ransacking the place. They destroyed the ATM and set it on fire.”

Asked if they made away with money, she said no. Asked whether the ATMs were stuffed with money, she said they had not even opened the main entrance for customers to go in. “People were just outside waiting to be attended to.”

She added: “What the boys did was totally out of place. I mean, do we now have the money? Why destroy these properties?

“However, the banks brought this on everyone by hoarding the new notes. They would give cash to POS operators and tell other customers they had no money.

“Sometimes, they would announce that they would pay people N10,000 each. But as they got more juicy deals, they would return to say there was no more money and they could only pay N5,000. That was how they starved customers of cash for their selfish gains. Now, see what it resulted in.”

A commercial vehicle operator who plies the route corroborated the traders’ claims. He added that at the First Bank, the hoodlums broke in and carted away plasma television sets. Someone, according to him, sustained bullet injuries during the fracas.

Sounding the sources out as to who the attackers of the banks might be, they opined that it could not have been the bank customers.

“My sister, would you go to the bank with sticks and stones to fight because of f money? It was people like you and I, elderly people too, that went there. I think all these boys hijacked things and seized the opportunity to wreak havoc,” one of the sources stated.

On his part, the commercial vehicle operator claimed the “police have been raiding the area since that day. Even this morning too, I heard they picked up some boys.

“If you check now, you will discover that some of those who have been arrested don’t have accounts with the banks. That tells you something; that they might have been sponsored or that they were just bad Area Boys.”

    Aftermath of attacks

Meanwhile, while the three affected banks have been put out of service, it was observed that banks across neighbouring Effurun and Warri cities have shut down operations. A tour through the metropolis on Friday morning saw several banks shut.

Point of Sales (POS) kiosks, which are common sights at several points in the cities, were hitherto shut. A couple of them which were opened had no cash to dispense.

Vehicular activities by commercial operators were also on the low, The Nation observed.

    Arrest of suspects

The Delta State Police Command said it had arrested 13 suspects in relation to the attacks.

The Commissioner of Police, Ari Mohammed Ali, had also directed that the suspects be moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Asaba.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Bright Edafe, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), who disclosed this to our correspondent, said: “We have 13 suspects arrested. The CP has directed the matter be transferred to the State CID.

“Two banks and two vehicles were set ablaze.”

My husband is not over-ambitious, says Oluremi Tinubu

    • …He is the best option for Nigerian women

The wife of the presidential flag bearer of All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Oluremi Tinubu has faulted critics of her husband, accusing him of being over-ambitious; rather she said service is the driving force propelling the ruling party standard bearer. The Senator representing Lagos Central in the upper chamber of the National Assembly said her husband is qualified to aspire for the nation’s highest office after serving others and seeing their success for 20 years.

Tinubu who spoke on Friday at a pre-election strategic meeting with zonal, state and local government women leaders organised by the National Women Leader, Dr. Beta Edu in Abuja said “ticket of Tinubu-Shetimma is the best option for Nigerian women.” “My husband had not contested an election since 2003. This year, it will be 20 years, so he did not just wake up and say it is my turn. If you served other people for 20 years and make sure they excel. I don’t believe you can’t ask for your place.

“The Bible said, when you build, you should inhabit, when you sow, you should be the first part taker. It depends on how long you have invested.” On the ongoing cash crunch and its effect on her husband’s fortune, the former Lagos State First Lady said despite the cash crunch, the large crowd of party supporters at Tinubu-Shetimma campaign rallies, have shown that God and not money has been the driving force of their electioneering campaign.

“They told us, we are buying people to come to rallies. God now said what I am going to do, I can shut the heavens, so there is no money and you will see my glory. Are we not seeing God’s glory? Appreciating the women for turning out in large numbers, the federal lawmaker said, “The strategic meeting of today is very important at this crucial time. I appreciate you all who have come from the 36 states and FCT and I am charging you, as women leaders, to go back to their states, wards and units to educate the women folks to vote for Tinubu/Shettima.

“This is our time. The popular saying, ‘what a man can do, a woman too can do better.’ This is the decade for women. This is the time for women to take control again. Take control of our homes so that we can build our homes and nation. Be patient and go and vote. When you vote, shine your eyes and monitor until they count your votes”, she added. Earlier, the National Woman Leader of the party, Dr. Beta Edu urged the women to reach out to people outside the party and get them to support the Tinubu-Shettima ticket. She said the victory of Tinubu-Shetimma will be a victory for Nigerian women as more opportunities will be available for them to realise their potential and political dreams.

Nigerians hope in military to keep peace during election – Irabor

THE Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor, says the nation is looking up to the armed forces and other security agencies to ensure peace and smooth elections. Irabor, who was represented by the Chief of Defence Policy and Plans, AVM Jackson Yusuf, said this at 2023 International Military Sports Council (CISM) Day Run, on Saturday, in Abuja. According to him, the elections are coming in about seven days from today

“The nation is looking up to us as members of the armed forces and security agency to play our roles in keeping peace and ensuring peaceful election. I also want to seize this opportunity, to urge us to stand up to our constitutional responsibilities in fulfilling that role of ensuring a peaceful atmosphere for the election,” he said. The defence chief said that CISM was founded on Jan. 18, 1948 after the second World War (WW2) as a means of promoting global peace and unity after the destruction and the ravages that was witnessed in the world.

He said the organisation grew from five member countries at inception to 114 member states at present, adding that Nigeria became a member of the global body in 1972. He said the organisation had remained committed to organising and coordinating military sports all over the world and playing its role of promoting friendship through sports. He noted that the brave men and women of the armed forces and other security agencies can tell the world with pride of their daily successes in counter insurgency, and other security challenges.

Irabor commended the service chiefs and heads of security agency for taking part in the 2023 CISM day run. The Director of Sports, Defence Headquarters, AVM Kabir Aliyu, thanked the CDS, service chiefs and heads of other security agencies for taking part in the 2023 activities. • Gombe PDP instigating troubles, says Kari

Gombe PDP instigating troubles, says Kari

CHIEF of Staff to the Governor of Gombe State, Alhaji Abubakar Inuwa Kari, yesterday said the refusal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to sign the Peace Accord for the 2023 general election is a clear sign of irresponsibility. The PDP gubernatorial candidate Alhaji Jibrin Barde, had declined signing the Peace Accord blaming the police and Independent National Electoral Commission INEC for not responding to the allegations of attacks on his office and campaign billboards. Gombe PDP Chairman, Major General Amnon Kwaskebe rtd said the decision of Barde not to attend the meeting was with the support of the state party leaders.

But Kari in an exclusive chat with The Nation said there is no reason for any politician or political party to refuse signing of the Peace Accord for the election. “To me some of the complaints by the opposition parties are just a sign of losers crying out early, particularly the PDP. Their refusal to sign the Peace Accord is a clear sign of irresponsibility. If a Peace Accord is designed by INEC and security agencies, I do not see the reason why a political party will refuse to sign because of one or two complaints. I don’t have the details of their complaints but I know that in the election period you don’t always have it that smooth.

“We also suffered one or two attacks like that but by and large, I will give the security agencies a pass mark because they have been up and doing. So far, the campaigns are going on with minimum violence. If the party signs the Peace Accord, it shows that they are for peace but not signing it shows clearly that they are the ones instigating troubles and they want to continue to instigate troubles. I hope the security agencies will do the needful when such things happen,” he said.

Onyejeocha challenges PDP, others to campaign with achievements

HOUSE of Representatives member, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha has challenged candidates of other political parties in Abia State to come out and campaign with their achievements to prove to the people that they deserve to be voted for in the upcoming elections. Onyejeocha stated this yesterday when she received the Abia State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Ikechi Emenike, in her constituency during a campaign rally.

The lawmaker, who represents Isiukwuato-Imunneochi Federal Constituency, listed her contributions in human development before joining politics and the developments she has attracted to the people since she was elected, especially under the ruling All Progressives Congress. She said that her records speak for her as she has delivered just as she will “continue to build on what has been achieved in the past.

The lawmaker said: “Aside from my contributions in other areas, donations to schools, construction of civic centers, scholarships for JAMB, SSCE and for university, I have delivered on my promises. I have delivered. APC has delivered. We have something to campaign with. Let other political parties come and tell us what they will use to campaign. APC has done so much in this constituency and by extension Abia State because Isiukwator-Umunneochi is part of Abia State.

“There is no zone in Isiukwuato that has not benefited from the construction of road and none is less than one kilometer and that’s the minimum. The same thing in Umunneochi. The construction of School of Aviation is ongoing. The classrooms and administrative blocks have been completed by the APC government. We have done three kilometers concrete road on that aviation school road.

Olubadan empathizes with Tinubu on campaign schedules

OLUBADAN of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, on Friday expressed empathy with the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his crowded and tight campaign schedules which occasionally may lead to him disappointing some people. Oba Balogun made this remark while reacting to the message of apology sent to him, members of his Advisory Council and other traditional rulers from the Oke-Ogun area of the state, who could not be seen by the politician despite their hours of waiting for him at the Oja’ba palace of the Olubadan on Thursday during his campaign rally at the Mapo Hall in the state capital.

In a statement by the Olubadan’s Personal Assistant (Media), Oladele Ogunsola, it was recalled that the traditional rulers had gathered at the Oja’ba palace to receive the APC Presidential standard-bearer, but he could not make it to the venue due to tight schedules and mammoth crowd that gathered around Mapo axis where the Oja’ba palace is located. Following the inability of the former governor of Lagos State to meet with the traditional rulers led by Olubadan, a powerful delegation led by the Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Chief Sunday Dare was at the Alarere residence of the Olubadan to deliver the message of apology sent by Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

Oba Balogun in his reaction said as traumatic as the waiting could be, “I can understand and I strongly feel for him. Having been a political player before and campaigned for elective office, I know what it means. I empathize with him and I don’t envy him at all. Tell him that his message resonates well and will deliver his message to my brothers in the traditional system”, the former Senator of the Federal Republic added.
