Man City go top with win over title rivals Arsenal

Manchester City returned to the top of the Premier League for the first time since November as they leapfrogged leaders Arsenal with a vital victory at Emirates Stadium.

The reigning champions turned on the power in the second half in the biggest game of the domestic season as Arsenal paid a heavy price for individual errors.

Takehiro Tomiyasu’s poor backpass allowed Kevin de Bruyne to loft a finish over Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale after 24 minutes but Arsenal deservedly drew level three minutes before half-time, Bukayo Saka scoring from the spot after City goalkeeper Ederson fouled Eddie Nketiah.

City, lacking spark in the opening phase, improved after the break and had a penalty of their own ruled out for offside against Erling Haaland before they showed a ruthless streak to punish Arsenal.

Gabriel lost possession to allow Bernardo Silva and Haaland to set up Jack Grealish for a deflected finish after 72 minutes before they ended Arsenal’s hopes with 10 minutes left.

Inevitably, Haaland was the scorer from De Bruyne’s pass to put City top on goal difference having played one game more than Arsenal. (BBC)

  • Tinubu calls for truce over cash swap protests

Tinubu calls for truce over cash swap protests

Concerned by the spate of violent protests in some parts of the country over the unpopular monetary policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the presidential flag bearer of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for a truce.

The frontline presidential candidate in a statement he signed on Wednesday night expressed concern over the spread of the protest and sympathised with Nigerians over the harrowing time the currency redesign policy has thrown on the people.

The statement reads: “I am saddened by reports of violent protests in parts of our country today, especially in Delta, Oyo, Kwara and Edo states. In Delta, there were reports of arson and destruction of bank branches.

“I sympathise with all Nigerians who are going through the pains of not being able to get money from banks and ATM points to meet their basic daily needs. I also sympathize with the banks for being victims of the CBN currency redesign policy.

“Be rest assured that this phase will soon pass away as our governments at both the federal and state levels are working to surmount the current challenges.

“With the Supreme Court reaffirming its order of 8 February on monetary authorities to allow the old and new Naira notes to circulate together, I believe a solution is right on the way and the scarcity of Naira notes will soon be over.

“I am happy to note the various measures being put in place by many of our Governors to cushion the effect of the scarcity of Naira on households.”

Appealing to the youths to restrain themselves from resorting to violent protest, he urged them not to take the law into their hands through destructive protests.

“We feel your pains and frustration but destroying lives and properties will not solve any problem.

“Rather, it will only complicate the crisis we have on our hands.

“We must keep the peace and remain calm.

“Let us not be provoked. Instead, let us cooperate with the government in seeking immediate and lasting solutions.

“This difficult time shall soon be over. We must keep hope alive as we move forward to a better, stronger and more prosperous Nigeria of our dream. God bless you all.”

World Bank President to leave in June

World Bank President David Malpass is stepping down in June.

Malpass, who has been in the eye of the storm over climate change issue, made the announcement on Wednesday.

Malpass said he would step down by June 30. This is about a year before his term would have ended.

He said: “It has been an enormous honor and privilege to serve as President of the world’s premier development institution alongside so many talented and exceptional people.

“With developing countries facing unprecedented crises, I’m proud that the Bank Group has responded with speed, scale, innovation, and impact. The last four years have been some of the most meaningful of my career. Having made much progress, and after a good deal of thought, I’ve decided to pursue new challenges. I want to thank our staff and Boards of Directors for the privilege of working with them every day to strengthen the effectiveness of our operations in the most challenging of times.”

The Bank Group, he said, is fundamentally strong, financially sustainable, and well positioned to increase its development impact in the face of urgent global crises.

Malpass said: “This is an opportunity for a smooth leadership transition as the Bank Group works to meet increasing global challenges, facilitate private investment, sharpen its focus on global public goods, and maintain strong momentum on operational delivery and portfolio performance for client countries.”

He was billed to be in Nigeria in June.

A statement by the bank said Malpass today informed the Board of Executive Directors of his intention to step down from his position.

“During Malpass’s tenure, he focused on seeking stronger policies to increase economic growth, alleviate poverty, improve living standards, and reduce government debt burdens. Over the last four years, the Bank Group’s five institutions (IBRD, IDA, IFC, MIGA, and ICSID) responded quickly to global crises, mobilizing a record $440 billion in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, war in Ukraine, sharp global economic slowdown, unsustainable debt burdens, climate change, and food, fertilizer, and energy shortages.

“With developing countries under severe financial pressure, Malpass met frequently with world leaders to discuss supportive policies, including debt reduction to break the cycles of unsustainable debt. Under his leadership, the Bank Group more than doubled its climate finance to developing countries, reaching a record $32 billion last year. Malpass led efforts to enable and increase private sector investment and trade and contributed thought leadership to the Bank Group’s analytical products on fiscal and monetary policy, currency systems, and governance reform. Malpass also strengthened the institution’s management and personnel and will leave the Bank Group with solidified finances and fundraising to support its AAA credit rating,” the bank said.

  • Tinubu turned down offer to work against Buhari in 2019- Wike

Tinubu turned down offer to work against Buhari in 2019- Wike

Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike has recalled how the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, turned down their offers to work against the reelection of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.

Wike said after meeting with a former Senate President, Bukola Saraki and Sokoto Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, in Paris between 2017 and 2018, he was sent to the Bourdillon to persuade Tinubu to join the PDP and work against Buhari.

The Governor commended Tinubu for his steadfastness and loyalty to President Buhari, despite the challenges he had faced in the ruling party.

He said: “I came to your house in Bourdillon. I came and said to you sir, look at the way the country is moving. There is no way we can allow the current president to continue in 2019.

“You now asked me, okay, what are the alternatives? I said sir, we have Atiku, we have Tambuwal, we have Bukola. You laughed. You said look I will remain with Buhari. If these are your alternatives, I will remain Buhari, that I don’t know them.”

The Governor spoke when Tinubu, his running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima, APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, visited him in Government House, Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

On Tinubu’s entourage were, Governors Abubakar Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi); Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos); David Umahi (Ebony); former Ekiti Governor Kayode Fayemi; Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva, Tony Okocha and others.

Wike commended the APC Governors for their insistence that power must return to the south after Buhari’s tenure.

He said: “I thank APC Governors for standing firm to say the unity of this country is more paramount. If you want to be president without peace does it make sense. You must be president when the country is united and you enjoy being president.”

The Governor described the APC presidential candidate as a man of character and courage saying such attributes, were what the country desperately required.

He said: “I wish you good luck. I support the principle of fairness, equity and justice and that is what G-5 stands. G-5 does not stand for anybody.”

He urged Tinubu to prevail on the Federal Government to ensure that 2023 general election was not truncated.

Wike noted that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) flagrant disregard to the Supreme Court on the naira swap policy matter should worry the APC-led Federal Government amidst the forthcoming poll.

Wike, who thanked God that the APC presidential rally in the state was devoid of violence, however, expressed reservation whether the APC led federal government was interested in conducting the 2023 general election particularly with the lingering naira swap crisis.

He said: “Do you people really want this election to take place or not; or you have an agenda to truncate this election. I don’t know. Look at what is happening in Oyo today, Edo, Delta. See what is going on.”

The Rivers State governor maintained that the abrupt naira redesign and the tactless implementation of the naira swap policy by the Central Bank of Nigeria smacked of pure politics.

He insisted that irrespective of the politics, the ruling APC must ensure the conduct of the general election.

“I believe your party should make sure this election holds. You people are in power, ensure that this election holds. Nobody can solve the issue of corruption in two-three months. It is not possible . This thing is purely politically motivated”, said.

Wike took a swipe on the governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, for his blatant disregard to the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

He said: “How can you people be in government at this time, governor of a Central Bank disrespecting the Supreme Court. Where has it happened in any democracy. Governor of Central Bank thinking of whether to obey Supreme Court order. Where has it happened?

“I am not talking about Federal High Court order, not Court Of Appeal, I am talking about Supreme Court. Supreme Court said do not do this and everybody is folding hand begging Central Bank to obey Supreme Court order. Which country has it ever happened? When the order of Supreme Court is not obeyed, what are you telling the poor people on the street.”

The Governor, who described himself as unrepentant member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said it was abominable for two PDP-controlled Bayelsa and Edo to join the Federal Government as defendants in the suit brought before the Supreme Court by some states challenging the naira sway policy.

“For the first time I have seen a government procuring opposition to join them to defend their policy. A policy that is anti-people. You are now the ones procuring we(PDP) to defend something that is totally wrong. I have seen anything like this in my life. It is a big shame,” he said

Wike advised Tinubu and the national leadership of the party not to invest resources in any of the party’s candidate in the State, because none of them would win a single seat in the general election.

  • APC Govs reject FG proposal on cash swap

APC Govs reject FG proposal on cash swap

Kaduna Governor Malam Nasir El-Rufai has revealed how Federal Government officials reached out to All Progressives Congress (APC) with some proposals on the cash swap crisis.

Some APC Governors have dragged the Federal Government to the Supreme Court over the cash swap deadline.

El-Rufai said the Federal.Government proposed a out-of-court settlement on the matter, which the Governors rejected.

He said the rejection was because the FG team’s proposal was laced with lies to the effect that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has already destroyed all the old N1,000 and N500 notes it retrieved from circulation.

El-Rufai, in a statement on Wednesday evening by his Special Adviser Media and Communication, Muyiwa Adekeye, said the Federal Government team were proposing only old N200 notes should remain legal tender and returned into circulation till 10 April, 2023.

The statement, which was to debunk report of a meeting between the Federal Government and the Nigerian Governors Forum or Progressive Governors Forum, said there was no such meeting.

The statement reads: “A few hours after the Supreme Court adjourned the “currency redesign” case today, The Cable, a respected publication, published what it described as an exclusive story regarding the intentions of the Federal Government on the matter.

“Malam Nasir El-Rufai would like to clarify that The Cable has been misled by its sources on this issue. There has been no meeting this week between the FG and either the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) or the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), not to talk of one lasting till the wee hours of today, Wednesday, 15 February 2023.

“Rather, senior officials of the FG reached some governors, including Malam Nasir El-Rufai, on phone to initiate discussions on a possible out of court settlement. The terms they proposed were to allow only the old N200 note to remain legal tender and be circulated by the CBN till 10 April 2023. They claimed that the CBN had already destroyed the old N500 and N1000 notes that had been deposited, but that those persons who still held the old notes could redeem them up to 10 April 2023.

“These were not considered as serious proposals, for obvious reasons. Circulating the old N200 notes alone would not be sufficient to relieve widespread human suffering in Kaduna State, and indeed in Nigeria today. They knew that and that is why they falsely claimed that the CBN had already destroyed the old N500 and N1000 notes. This is contrary to the fact available to the governors to the effect that the old notes were in the custody of commercial bank branches throughout Nigeria until the evening of Monday, February 13, and not a single N500 or N1000 had been destroyed.

“It is also a non-starter to insist on a new cut off date without first assuring that sufficient new notes would have been printed and circulated. Information available to the governors also indicate that the Mint will need at least 12 months to print the minimum amount of N1 trillion needed to ensure a functioning trade and exchange environment in Nigeria.

“The tabling of false facts, inadequate solutions to the sufferings of our people, and the bad faith that some of the FG negotiators displayed in our phone conversations and chats have now been taken further in leaking a false account and context to a respected medium. The plaintiff governors rejected the draft proposal as insincere, and invested our hopes in the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

“Malam Nasir El-Rufai will be addressing the people of Kaduna State on this currency redesign mess, the consequences of the extension of the injunction of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, and related matters tomorrow. But the Kaduna State Government feels it is important tonight not to allow an exclusive falsehood to stand, or even gain the slightest traction. This statement is therefore issued to put the records straight.”

  • Buhari plans 60 more days for old notes – Presidential source

Buhari plans 60 more days for old notes – Presidential source

Indications emerged on Wednesday that President Muhammadu Buhari is making moves to find a solution to the escalating crisis trailing the cash swap by allowing the old notes to remain in circulation for another 60 days.

Many Nigerians protested the scarcity of the new N1,000, N500 and N200 notes on Wednesday as banks and traders stopped receiving the old notes, compounding living for citizens.

There were reports of widespread violent protests in Ibadan, Effurun, Benin, Akure and some others places, leading to vandalism, theft and other forms of chaos.

The Supreme Court on February 8 ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to refrain from enforcing the deadline for the phasing out of the N200, N500, and N1,000 notes pending the hearing of a lawsuit brought by some State Governments, challenging the new currency redesign.

However, to bring succor to the nation and avert contempt against the Supreme Court, Buhari is said to be entertaining the idea of extending the validity of the old notes till April 10, 2023.

A reliable presidential source, who spoke under anonymity, informed the President is seeking an extension of the use of the old N1,000, N500 and N200 for 60 more days.

  • Why we dropped former deputy Gov candidate-Abia PDP

Why we dropped former deputy Gov candidate-Abia PDP

The leadership of the Abia chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has explained it dropped the running mate to the late Prof. Uche Ikonne, Hon. Okey Igwe, because he has dual citizenship.

Publicity Secretary and Vice Chairman Abia North, Hon. Amah Abraham, told The Nation on the phone the party took the decision to avoid going into the March 11 contest without any governorship candidate.
He said: “Our former guber candidate is deceased and as a result of that, a section of the Electoral Act was activated. That section of the Electoral Act which was activated requires a primary to be conducted and in conducting fresh primaries means that a new candidate must emerge from the party and that was exactly what has happened.
“A new candidate has emerged and one of the legal privileges of a candidate who emerged as a flagbearer of the party either as a governor or a President is the first privilege that accrues to the person is the right to nominate his or her running mate.

“Nobody or institution compels you to adopt somebody. Of course, a candidate can choose his running mate by consulting with the party, but it is the candidate that will eventually determine his or her running mate.

“So, when Prof. Ikonne died, the joint ticket with his deputy or running mate died as well. Whoever that was his running mate ceases to exist as a running mate because nobody elected the running mate in any party primary. The person who was elected was Prof. Ikonne and that is the person who is vested with the powers to nominate.

“If he who was nominated had died, the nominator would have been empowered to re-nominate another person. That is what happened.

“The truth is that he is a very qualified person. The truth is that we feel so bad that he is no longer the deputy governorship candidate of the party. But you see, his private interest as an individual cannot override the interest of the party.

“One of the reasons the new governorship candidate didn’t consider him (Okey Igwe) is also based on legal issues and one of those legal issues is that as of the time that he (Okey Igwe) was already a running mate, a matter came up in a Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where a candidate was challenged that in a Federal High Court that he is not eligible on the grounds that he has dual citizenship and the Federal High Court ruled in the matter that anybody who has pledged allegiance to a foreign country cannot be qualified to stand for public office in Nigeria. That person was disqualified.

“Now, the person took the matter to the Court of Appeal and the Court of Appeal quashed the decision of the Federal High Court and the matter is before the Supreme Court.

“He is a dual citizen; he has served in the American Military and the rest of the things that were part of the plus which he had as a person and if for any reason those things which were part of his plus have now developed legal challenges, then we cannot because of his individual interest take a risk that will make our party go into an election without a candidate.

“As a party, we felt that it was not necessary to start talking about the challenges that made the party to drop him but we are now addressing this issue because of the position that he (Okey Igwe) is taking now and that is why it has become important that we explain to the public reasons for our actions.”
