PDP leader, 100 others defect to APC in Tinubu’s ward

By Tajudeen Adebanjo and Barakat Ibrahim

A leader of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, Alhaja Aolat Olatunde yesterday led over 100 members of the party to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

They were received at Ikeja Ward ‘C’ comprising Alausa, Olusosun and Oregun. Coincidentally, it is the ward of the APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Alhaja Olatunde, who has been with the PDP for over 15 years and others were received by the Chairman of Babajide Sanwo-Olu/Obafemi Hamzat Independent Campaign Group (ICG), Cardinal James Odunmbaku; ICG Director-General, Mr Tayo Ayinde; a member of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) Dr Abayomi Finnih and other APC chieftains.

The former PDP Women Leader said the personality of the APC presidential candidate attracted her and others to the party.

She said: “Asiwaju Tinubu is an enigma who has assisted a lot of people, irrespective of their tribal, political or religious affiliations. I benefitted from him when he governed Lagos State. We can also see the good work of Governor Sanwo-Olu. These and many other reasons prompted our decision to join the APC. We have strong PDP members across Ikeja namely Alausa, Olusosun, Oregun, Opebi, Onigbogbo, Onireke and Cement among others that defected along with me. More are willing to join the APC.”

She called on others in the PDP to join “the moving train, the APC”.

Cardinal Odunmbaku, otherwise known as Baba Eto, described the defectors’ actions as evidence of good governance.

He said Asiwaju Tinubu stands for progressive politics, the reason for people associating with him. He added: “We give kudos to our National Leader, Tinubu; his works speak for him and this has attracted many opposition members to the party over the years.”

Dr Finnih described Alhaja Olatunde as a big asset to any political party.

“We are assured that she is going to enhance our chances. We know how strong she is to the party she formerly belonged to. Any sensible person should know the only party to be is the APC because any other party is wasting time and not realising the political situation we are in Nigeria.”

  • INEC has no favourite candidate, says Yakubu

INEC has no favourite candidate, says Yakubu

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reassured that it will not support any candidate or political party in the forthcoming general election, as it is only interested in the electoral process.

INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu said this when he addressed Supervisory Presiding Officers (SPOs) for the election in Abuja at the weekend. The chairman urged them to be committed to their oath of neutrality and allegiance to Nigeria.

He also advised them not to see their job as a service to INEC but to the country as a whole in which they were equal stakeholders. He said: “The commission is determined that the 2023 general election will be the best ever and you are the people that will help the commission to make it happen and help to ensure that Nigeria has a pleasant experience on election day.

“INEC is not a political party. INEC has no candidate in the election. Our only interest is in the processes. The choice of who becomes what in Nigeria is left to the Nigerian people to decide.”

Yakubu described the work of the SPOs as critical to the success of the 2023 general election, urging them to uphold the integrity of the process. He said: “You are the people who supervise those who will work at the most important level, the polling units (PUs) level. That is the only place where voting will take place.

“The collation officers at the polling unit’s level are collating results from the PUs. When collation officers at the PU go to the local government level, they are collating results from the PUs.

When it goes to the state level they are collating results from the PUs and when they come to Abuja, where we collate the presidential result it would have passed through all these processes.

“So, by the time the results come to Abuja, Nigerians would have known the outcome of the election.”

70 to make it a total of 352 in case some are unable to make it on the day of the election for one reason or another; we have a buffer.

“What is happening in the FCT is happening in all the 36 days of the federation at the same time. Between today (Feb. 11) and tomorrow (Feb. 12), we will train the SPOs. Then from Tuesday (Feb. 14) to Thursday (Feb. 16), we will train the Presiding Officers and Assistant Presiding Officers (APO) 1, 2 and 3.”

  • With victory in Northwest, Tinubu will emerge president

With victory in Northwest, Tinubu will emerge president

Following the conclusion of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign rallies in the Northwest, the National Vice Chairman (Northwest), Salihu Moh. Lukman has expressed optimism that the party’s candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu will win the forthcoming election.

Lukman said the APC campaign rallies in all the seven states of the Northwest were signposts that victory is sure for the party in the region. He pointed out that the political history of Nigeria has shown that every presidential candidate that wins the Northwest usually wins the presidency.

Lukman said in a statement on Sunday: “Kebbi State APC presidential rally on Saturday concluded this phase of the APC presidential campaign rallies in all the seven states of the Northwest. We want to thank all our people in the Northwest for coming out in all our rallies to demonstrate support for our presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“From Kaduna on December 13, to Kano on January 4, Jigawa on January 21, Zamfara on January 28, Katsina on February 6, Sokoto on February 9, and finally yesterday (Saturday) in Kebbi, our people came out to demonstrate mass support for our party and all our candidates.

“We want to thank all our people and re-affirm the commitment of our party, our leaders and all our candidates to continue to provide honest, sincere and responsive leadership. In particular, we want to thank and congratulate all our party leadership at levels in the Northwest for the hard work and for maintaining a united front throughout this phase of the campaign. We want to also commend and appreciate all our party members and supporters for coming out in mass to all campaign rallies.”

Rivers APC set for Wednesday’s presidential rally

Members of the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are working round the clock to get the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in the Elekahia, Port Harcourt in good shape for the party’s presidential campaign rally scheduled to hold on Wednesday.

Governor Nyesom Wike last week approved the use of the venue for the rally at no cost to the party.

A member of the APC Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) who is also the chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), Tony Okocha led other members of PCC and the Independent Campaign Council (ICC) to the venue yesterday to inspect the ongoing work.

Speaking to reporters after a tour of the venue Okocha said the state is ready to receive the APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu and his running mate, Kashim Shettima for the campaign. He assured stakeholders that the event will be a success.

He said: “This is the approved place for the APC presidential rally, which will be taking place on Wednesday, February 15, 2023. The people flanking me left and right are members of the APC PCC/ICC and some others that were coopted from the party based on competence in the part of what we’re doing.

“We have come here to inspect the facility at the venue approved by the state government for our presidential campaign. Basically, we’re here to see the ongoing preparation for the event and to reassure our presidential candidate that Rivers State is already up and doing… we’re ready for him.”

He said the LOC members are sacrificing their resources to ensure everything was made ready before the date to avoid last minute rush. He added: “Even though nothing has been advanced to us, we have taken the bull by the horn. As a people, we have felt that nobody will attempt to sabotage what the APC will be doing in Rivers State.

“To this end, members of the PCC/ICC have been pulling their resources together to see how much we can go in getting the venue ready, and also mobilize a minimum of 50,000 indigenes that are eligible to vote from nooks and crannies of the state for the rally.

Okocha assured that the event will be the “mother of all political campaign rallies”.

  • INEC to meet party leaders today

INEC to meet party leaders today

The Independent National Electoral Commission is scheduled to meet leaders of the various political parties today (Monday), ahead of the forthcoming presidential election and the National Assembly elections slated for February 25.

The meeting which will take place inside the commission’s conference room is expected to review preparations for the general elections and possibly take feedback from the political parties on their state of preparedness for the polls.

The meeting is expected to be attended by national chairmen and national secretaries of the 18 registered political parties fielding candidates in the elections.

Meanwhile, the commission has said it planned to decongest polling units that are overcrowded to allow for a stress-free voting exercise during the forthcoming elections.

It said this was in the exercise of its powers under Section 40(2) of the Electoral Act, 2022, saying it has allotted voters from overcrowded polling units to less congested polling units within the same location to promote a more pleasant and stress-free voting experience on election day.

The commission enjoined eligible voters to visit the INEC voter verification system on: www.cvr.inecnigeria.org/vvs or voters.inecnigeria.org to check their name on the register of voters and confirm the location of their polling unit where they will vote on election day.

The commission also said that the list of registered voters in the 176,846 polling units nationwide will be on display at each polling unit prior to the day of the election, adding that eligible voters are encouraged to visit their polling units to check for their names on the register and confirm the location of their polling unit where they will vote.

  • No cabal will stop Tinubu, says APC support group

No cabal will stop Tinubu, says APC support group

One of the support groups working to actualise the aspiration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential flag bearer in the forthcoming general elections, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Tinubu Faithful Group (TFG), has advised President Muhammadu Buhari and others who have benefited from the ruling party since it came into being in 2013 to be loyal, fair, honest and trustworthy in their support for the party’s presidential candidate in the election.

Its National Coordinator, Olusola Orelaja said it is inconceivable that some members of the party that received the backing of Tinubu are now working against him, adding “God will shame them come February 25, 2023”.

Orelaja, who is also the founder of the TFG, said President Buhari had assured that he will only support candidates of the party. He said the idea of trying to back a northerner for the race cannot work “simply because it’s not the turn of the north to produce the next president”.

He said the allegation that a cabal in the Aso Rock presidential villa is determined to work towards an interim government, will cause a massive political crisis in the country.

Orelaja said: “I recall that the Kaduna State Governor Nasir EL-Rufai in an interview on Channels TV had alleged that some elements in the Aso Villa are working against Tinubu. He further stated that the elements do not want Tinubu to win the 2023 presidential election. But, God will crown Tinubu as the next president of Nigeria this February 2023.

“Furthermore reports that the leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo while speaking at the celebration of the life and times of the late President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Prof. George Obiozor, in Lagos last Wednesday, said there will be nothing like united Nigeria if Obi’s presidential bid fails this year. Adebanjo maintained that Obi remains the best candidate.”

The TFG national coordinator added: “It is unnecessary for anyone to threaten the peace of a country’s democratic process because of his personal choice.”

He said many indigenes of the Southwest are not in support of Chief Adebanjo’s position “because it is sad for a Yoruba group to stand against Tinubu’s candidacy”. He added: “Tinubu is a detribalised Nigerian, very competent, trustworthy, a distinguished scholar, an ambassador par excellence, an intellectual of international repute, and a qualified distinguished Nigerian.

“Our support group considers the campaign for Tinubu as an obligation. We will knock on every door, speak to every Nigerian, as well as travel across the length and breadth of the country to preach Tinubu/Shettima.”

  • APC rallies northern female voters for Tinubu

APC rallies northern female voters for Tinubu

Twelve days before the presidential and National Assembly elections, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has charged her women leaders in the northern region of the country to mobilise and secure a minimum 21 million of women votes in the region come February 25.

To this end, the party has mapped out strategies to deploy women leaders from across the wards, and polling units of the entire northern states on the 17th of this month to canvass for their votes.

National Women Leader, Betta Edu disclosed this yesterday during the APC northern female stakeholders’ strategy session, which took place under the theme, “Progressive Northern Women Playing a Pivotal Role Towards 2023 Election Victory” at the headquarters of the party’s presidential campaign council in Abuja.

The National Women Leader who commended the active participation of northern women in politics urged women electorates in the region to cast their votes for Tinubu/Shetimma ticket, assuring the women folks of a better deal if the party’s candidates are elected.

In a keynote address by the Assistant National Youth spokesperson for the APC presidential campaign council, Zainab Buba Marwa stressed the need for women supporters of the party from the north to take the campaign for the Tinubu-led presidency to the grassroots.

Decrying a plethora of barriers that had impeded women’s participation in politics in the north over the years, she called on traditional and religious leaders to wade in to address the challenges.

Governor Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa State who graced the occasion assured that Tinubu and Shettima’s joint ticket would surely ensure the empowerment of women in the country.

The Deputy National Women Leader and convener of the strategy session, Zainab Abubakar Ibrahim highlighted why women from the region must queue behind the APC presidential candidates.

She recalled that the two leaders as former governors of Lagos and Bornu States empowered women significantly and expected that they will do more in that aspect when they emerged as president and vice president come February 25.

North Central zonal women leader, Zainab Audu expressed optimism that Tinubu would cost home to victory during the presidential poll.

  • How Emefiele sold naira policy conceived by PDP-inclined former general to govt

How Emefiele sold naira policy conceived by PDP-inclined former general to govt

The hardships caused by scarcity of the new naira notes are not mere happenstance. Some have asked Nigerians to bear with the government and the Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN), saying that the shortage of the notes is a temporary setback, and that the gains, when they manifest, will reinvigorate the economy.

The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning,  Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, who once said she knew nothing about the policy when it was announced , later turned round to speak about its benefits. But those with insight into how the policy was conceived dismissed her claims, accusing her of being economical with the truth. To them, the policy was politically motivated. They anticipated the hardships caused by the policy and were too convinced that the government, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, would have their goodwill badly affected before the polls commence on February 25 with the presidential election. The plotters,  it was further learnt, are intent on blocking power shift to the South, despite its justifications and implications for national integration, cohesion and unity.

Competent sources said a retired General, who is determined to ensure that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate,  Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, wins the February 25 poll, plotted what has turned the country upside down in the last two weeks.

For Atiku to emerge as PDP presidential candidate, the General played a behind the scene role, mobilising delegates and mounting pressure on other Northern aspirants to withdraw from the race. The withdrawal of Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal from the primary after it kicked off was due to the pressure.

The retired Army Officer is working in concert with some foot soldiers, who are now trying to whip ethnic sentiments, it was learnt.

Part of the agenda now is the effort being made to persuade Northern leaders, including monarchs, to  withdraw support for the APC at the poll.

The fuel and Naira scarcities are also being exploited to cause public disadisaffection and incite voters against the ruling party and its presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to the sources, the General, PDP top shots, including Atiku, and Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele, are working in cohort to reduce the chance of APC at the presidential poll through blackmail and propaganda.

At a rally in Abeokuta, capital of Ogun State, Tinubu had raised the alarm that the fuel and currency scarcities were meant to demarket APC  and its ticket by fifth columnists and saboteurs. He also said they were also exploiting the scenarios to embarrass President Muhammadu Buhari.

To underscore their connivance, Atiku and the PDP leadership kept mute as the currency swap sentenced Nigerians into agony.

PDP Deputy National Chairman Chief Olabode George, who was miffed by the strange silence,  blamed Atiku and National Chairman Iyorchia Ayu for their silence on the raging fuel and cash scarcities.

He also expressed surprise over the silence maintained by the Campaign Director-General, Tambuwal.

While Tinubu spoke up on behalf of Nigerians, urging the President and CBN to extend the deadline for the Naira swap,  Atiku, who had kept mute, attacked the APC candidate for condemning the fuel and cash crises.

However,  PDP and Atiku, who was vacillating, never saw any merit in calling for any extention, despite the public agony.

When the public disenchantment grew, Atiku later called for calm, advising Nigerians to bear with the Federal Government.

The source said elements behind the current crisis were acting a script. “Everything is programmed. The General who was behind Atiku’s emergence as candidate at the PDP primary is coordinating the onslaught against the APC. The aim is to set  people against APC and its candidates,  particularly Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“The retired General has experience in such things. He spearheaded the annulment of the June 12 election. He is a PDP supporter who worked behind – the – scene to foist Atiku on the party at the primary. He used Tambuwal to achieve his aim,”he added.

According to the source, “the General has been campaigning underground, visiting his fellow retired Generals and top traditional rulers in the North, telling them why power should not shift to the South. Having succeeded in the PDP, his mission now is to scuttle that unwritten agreement on power rotation among political actors in the country.

“The general was also instrumental to the overthrow of Buhari as military Head of State in 1985. Ganduje felt short of revealing the identity of this General when he said that anti – June 12 actors have regrouped to truncate the democratic process.”

Another source who advised the APC to quickly nip the antics of the retired Army officer in the bud said the General, who is adept in political manoeuvring,  has listening ears among those close to President Buhari.

He pointed out that although he and other people opposed to APC had plotted a different outcome for the APC presidential primary, they were disappointed that Tinubu won.

The source recalled that before the APC presidential shadow poll, they dropped Buhari’s name until the President pointedly told those in his cabinent wishing to vie for elective offices to quit.

The source stressed:”One of them was Emefiele, who was said to have bought cars and painted them in APC colours with his picture inscribed on them.  People who ought to know better, among them media chiefs,  cheered him on . Some went to court seeking judicial pronouncement affirming his right to contest while in office as CBN governor.

“His supporters dismissed the sound and solid argument that he was desecrating the cherished values of tradition of the CBN. When Buhari read the riot act, Emefiele ended his campaign. It was no surprise that he bought into the plot hatched by the general.”

Revealing how the CBN governor was co-opted into the plot to incite the electorate against Tinubu and APC, the source said they creatively introduced the dangerous policy of Naira note redesign and swap in a hurry, knowing that it will inflict hardship on Nigerians who will in turn blame the APC for the mess.

He said that was why Governor Nosiru Rl-Rufai quickly clarified that the Naira change, which was sudden, chaotic and provocative, was not the policy of the ruling party.

However, to get the backing of the government, the General and his allies reached out to those very close to President Buhari.

The source said:”This was easy as they were the promoters of Emefiele for President. Having secured their buying in,  Emefiele now sold the idea of currency swap to the president. He told the president that the move would curb kidnappings,  abductions and insurgency.

“An elated president Buhari instantly bought into it. He also told the president that it has tremendous economic benefits. Emefiele’s co-conspirators among Buhari’s top aides added that it would demonitise the voting process, thus enhancing the integrity of the forthcoming elections.

“The president was reminded of a similar policy he implemented in 1984 as military Head of State. His face shone like the sun. He nodded approvingly.  At that point, there was no going back on the policy as far as Buhari was concerned. Emefiele was mandated to go on with his plan.

“With Buhari now fully in support of the plan, the General, through his boy, Tambuwal, broke the “good news” to the PDP.”

He added:”That was why Atiku and the PDP criticised Tinubu when he spoke in Abeokuta about the devilish plot.”

Instructively, while Tinubu condemned the deadline, which he said, was unreasonable, Atiku never condemned it, but he and PDP twisted Tinubu’s remarks.

Indeed, the PDP candidate,  Atiku also asked the president not to allow further extension.

Reacting to Atiku’s statement, the Director of Media and Publicity, APC Presidential Campaign Council,  Bayo Onanuga, described the PDP candidate as Nigeria’s enemy number one.

Also, Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, who urged President Buhari to call the CBN to order, said the crisis was deliberately created to create a chaotic atmosphere for elections.

Wike urged Nigerians to be calm, despite the provocation.

Many economic experts have condemned the Naira redesign policy, which led to the withdrawal of N2 trillion from the system.

They also pointed that the printing and injection of  N300 billion only to the system fell below expectation.

Although Emefiele knew the CBN lacked the capacity to print what will be enough to go round, he kept assuring Nigerians that the apex bank has made enough of the new notes available to banks.

Although the CBN governor accused the banks of hoarding the new notes, many bank workers said the supply was inadequate.

Yet, Emefiele caused Buhari to direct the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) and DSS to go after his fellow bankers when he knew that what the CBN had released was not enough to go round.

Nigerians who could not understand and bear the confusion stormed the banks to demand for their trapped cash, creating unsavory scenes and in some cases, beating up bank workers.

At the weekend, Emefiele admitted to the Council of State that the CBN does not have the capacity to print adequate new notes.

    PDP leaders are

    conspirators, says George

To George, the attitude of the PDP leadership smacked of conspiracy.

He said:”In all honesty, I cannot decipher the logic of quietness against the cliff edge that Nigeria has been plunged.

“Our party, the PDP, and others, such as the Labour Party, SDP, NNPP, seem to have concurred to the present shenanigan. I wonder, what hate, what evil, what madness will propel anyone of sane mind to plunge Nigeria into the present state of hopelessness, annihilation and abject suffering of the citizenry.”

The PDP elder, who spoke with reporters in Lagos, lamented that “due to this anomaly, which is a deviation from regulation or what is regarded as normal, there seems to be a graveyard silence on the part of PDP leadership.

George said:”It puzzles rationality. It benumbs our senses as Nigerians wake up every day to daily agonies of perennial fuel scarcity, tossed at us by the NNPC and the agony of non-availability of cash, occasioned by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) through its Naira rebranding.

“Where is the Presidential candidate of our party, the PDP, Atiku Abubakar?  Where is Iyorchia Ayu, the National Chairman. How come the voice of the DG, Campaign Council of the PDP is drowned in perpetual silence against the atrocities of the APC government with the presidential election just a few days away?

“Why have they allowed their voices to be drowned in conspiratorial silence? Where are the opposition political parties? What does the graveyard silence portend for Nigerians?

“It seems to mean that Nigerians’ right to good has been consigned to the dustbin by the political class..”

To the former military governor of Ondo State, the Federal Government is overwhelmed, stunned, halted, stalled, anc puzzled about grappling with the current challenges.

He added:”I believe the various state actors can do better. Managers of our economy should not take Nigerians for granted by churning out retrogressive economic policies.

“We should rather strive to review our focus and our ultimate horizon . Nigeria must withdraw from the destructive brink.”

George lamented that the country has continued to toy with power supply, which is very germane to the development of any developing economy.

He said Nigeria loses an estimated $29 billion in accruable revenue every year due to epileptic power, adding that it is not sustainable.

George stressed:”Power is the very lifeblood of all industrial revolution. It is the fuel of all economic development. A nation without efficient power supply cannot rise into the bright dawn of the digital civilisation.

“It is stuck forever in the bleak dark side of economic underdevelopment and teeters inevitably on economic ruination.”

On the chaotic cash crunch imbroglio, George said:”The decision of the  manager of our financial system, the CBN,  to redesign the Naira, has only pushed the country further into dire straits.

“Our national economy has sunk deeper into the abyss, and the people are being made to become refugees in their own country with hunger ravaging every home. The policy on the currency should not have been contemplated in the way it was implemented.”

He added: “The citizenry are only worse for the policy, toiling in vain every day for the non-availability of the new notes. The tragic comedy of the financial crisis is the internal exchange rate racket going on in all the states.

“For you to get Naira cash across the counter and from POS operators, there is an ‘exchange rate’ (charges) depending on the  financial smartness of the operators.

“Nigerians now pay between 10% and 25% for them to get their hard-earned Naira cash. Nigeria must be the only country in the world where you pay ‘officially’ a percentage in local currency for you to get your money in banks.”

George said Nigerians cannot be forced to move away from a cash-based economy to a complete cashless regime overnight, judging by the current archaic state of technology, the internet which is still in its epileptic state and the perennial fuel supply situation , which has also thrown the country into turmoil .

Frowning at the fuel scarcity, he said it is scandalous, adding:”As Africa’s largest crude oil producer, many months of fuel scarcity, especially during the Christmas and New Year festivities, reflects the dysfunction in Nigeria’s public administration and the economy.”

“The government and its agencies are clueless, making conflicting statements and embarking on uncoordinated actions. This is the time for Nigerians to open their eyes and minds by voting for a competent and experienced person to take us to the promise land. We cannot afford to make mistakes this time around. Any move short of this is a recipe for complete chaos.”

  • NECA urges focus on effects on economy

NECA urges focus on effects on economy

LOOK beyond the politics of the naira redesign and focus on its damaging effects on businesses and the economy, the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), counselled the Federal Government yesterday.

In a statement by its Director-General, Mr. Adewale-Smatt Oyerinde, NECA said the cash crunch has adversely affected the economy.

The economy said: “In the last few weeks, with the cash squeeze and the purchasing ability of Nigerians greatly impaired by the poor implementation of the policy, the economy has witnessed a significant bashing.

“This is so, with report stating that the Real sector witnessed about 40 per cent drop in productive activities.

“As the cash crush continues, thousands of productive hours are lost daily on queues by employees and many cannot even get to work.

“The value chain in the formal and informal sector with over N10 billion cash transaction daily is almost destroyed with consequences for employment, business sustainability and National development.”

The director-general called for critical and immediate effort to be made to improve or upgrade alternative routes to cash, thereby ensuring seamless transactions before going digital.

According to him, the series of actions being taken by the CBN now in the form of having Agent Naira Swap, among others, are afterthoughts, after the reality of resistance by Nigerians.

He said: “It is callous to deprive citizens of the new naira notes after cajoling them to deposit the old ones in the banks.

“We urge the CBN to sanction the commercial banks that have been found to be complicit in the whole show of shame, even as the CBN cannot extricate itself from being complicit.

“As an immediate action, we align with the position of the Council of State that the CBN should release more new naira notes into the economy or allow the use of the old ones, pending a time when it will demonstrate competence by not always putting the cart before the horse in the implementation of monetary policies.”

The NECA boss described as laudable the naira redesign policy with its objectives as explained by the apex bank.

He said, however, that like many of the bank’s policy initiatives, this was also flawed by improper and shortsightedness in implementation.

Oyerinde said: “For a definitive monetary policy as the naira design, it is expected that the CBN will not only take lessons from other countries like India, Myanmar, Australia, Venezuela, Zimbabwe and the European Union, which witnessed various degrees of successes and failures when they implanted their currency redesign.

“However, CBN will also do a thorough analysis and simulation of likely social and economic challenges that might arise and definitive response to those challenges.

“Thus far, it does not seem that the CBN understands the challenges, nor have solutions to the economic issues, thereby allowing speculators and economic saboteurs to have a field day at the expense of legitimate businesses and the economy.”

Nigerian telecoms subscribers figure hits 222m, says NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has said as of December 2022, the number of active mobile subscribers in the country had reached 222.571 million, while internet subscribers had exceeded 154.8 million.

The commission’s Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Professor Umar Danbatta, announced the figures at the weekend during NCC Day in the ongoing 44th Kaduna International Trade Fair in Kaduna.

Represented by the Head of Consumer Protection and Advocacy, Banji Ojo, the NCC boss said the commission recognised the fact that the telecommunications sector has been a strategic driver of the digital economy agenda of the Federal Government, as it continues to provide the needed digital stamina to support the economy, especially the activities of the SMEs across in Nigeria and beyond.

He said: “Information Communications Technology (ICT) is not only one of the fastest growing industries – directly creating millions of jobs – but it is also an important enabler of innovation and development, as it provides the backbone infrastructure for transnational business.

“In line with the Digital Literacy and Skills Pillar of the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS) 2020-2030, for a Digital Nigeria, the commission embarked on digital literacy training for entrepreneurs across the six geopolitical zones of the country,” he said.
