    A’Ibom CJ pardons 45 inmates

THE Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom, Justice Ekaette Obot, has released 45 inmates across the state during her facility visit to the Correctional Centres.

The Chief Judge made the disclosure while briefing newsmen in Uyo on Friday after a three-day facility visit to correctional centres in the state.

Obot called for the relocation of Eket Correctional Centre to decongest the facility for better management of inmates.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the chief judge visited; Ikot Abasi, Eket, Ikot Ekpene and Uyo correctional centres.

NAN also reports that during the visit, three inmates were pardoned from Ikot Abasi, nine were discharged and acquitted in Eket, 11 inmates were also freed from Ikot Ekpene while 22 inmates were released from Uyo correctional centres respectively.

The chief judge said that some of the freed inmates had spent more years in the correctional centres than the penalty for the offence they were charged with.

Obot said that some of the inmates had been in the facilities between four and five years without being charged to Court.

The chief judge said that Ikot Abasi facility was good enough in the state while she adjudged Eket facility as the worst with a capacity of 123 but currently having 300 inmates.

“As I said at the beginning, Ikot Abasi was okay, and the capacity was not fully utilised. So, it was more organised than every other facility apart from Ikot Ekpene. Ikot Ekpene is the best facility we have in the state.

“Eket is the worst of all, it is limited in space and the number is overwhelming and they are not able to cater for the inmates there.”

THE palace of Agu III of Ishiagu, Ivo local government area of Ebonyi State, Eze Moses Ngele was yesterday vandalised during a protest by women of the community.

The women had declared a weeklong peaceful protest against the killings and kidnapping of residents by suspected herdsmen in the area.

The protest, which had lingered for four days turned violent on Saturday leading to the vandalisation of the monarch’s palace by hoodlums who allegedly hijacked the protest.

The hoodlums also vandalised the residence of Ivo Council Chairman, Emmanuel Aja.

The women protesters were alleged to have barricaded Amaeze road and other entrances to the community, demanding that the state government and security agencies should arrest and prosecute the killers and kidnappers of their relatives, which have persisted for a long time.

“Women of Ishiagu community staged protest since early hours of yesterday, and till this present time, it’s still ongoing.

“They are protesting the incessant killings and kidnapping along Amaeze road by unknown gunmen. As I speak with you, there’s a total breakdown of laws and order,” an eyewitness revealed.

“The house and vehicles of the local government chairman of Ivo was attacked. Also, the King of the community, Agu III of Ishiagu kingdom was also attacked. And, the women are chanting threat songs, that they’re not comfortable with their big men in the present government.”

Aja, when contacted, confirmed the incident, lamenting the level of destruction of valuable properties belonging to the monarch and himself.

He accused opposition political parties of hijacking the peaceful protest and turning it into a violent one.

According to him, “we have a problem in a bus stop called Ejiukwu, a place where Herdsmen use to come and kidnap our people, and sometimes kill them. I have complained to DSS, the Commissioner of Police, and OC Nkwagu military cantonment are aware of it.

“The herdsmen are living in our bush and terrorising our people. We want them (security) to raid the bush, so this will stop.

“I left my house in the morning to meet with the OC Nkwagu military cantonment; I was there when they called me that some women have turned the peaceful protest that started some days ago, into a riot.

“The women who are agents of other political parties in the state hijacked the peaceful protest; they went to the palace of our Eze-Ogo and destroyed his properties.

“As I was there talking to the OC Nkwagu military cantonment, they informed me again, that the protesters are already in my house. They destroyed some properties and my cars including house there,” he stated.

We will reclaim stolen governorship mandate, Dafinone assures Deltans

THE Delta Central Senator-elect, Chief Ede Dafinone, has assured Deltans, including supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC), that the party will reclaim the stolen mandate” freely given to Senator Ovie Omo-Agege at the just concluded governorship polls.

Dafinone was one of the two senators elected on the platform of the ruling APC in Delta state, at the February 25 elections.

Stating that the party and its candidate, Omo-Agege are making deliberate efforts to reclaim the governorship seat, he denied media reports that there is a crack among party leaders in the state, noting that they (leaders) and members of the APC are solidly behind Deputy Senate President’s quests to recover the party’s stolen mandate.

Speaking on the outcome of the election, the renowned accountant said that against the expectations of Deltans, the March 18 gubernatorial election in the State was marred by irregularities.

He further expressed disappointment that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) went ahead to declare the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori as the winner of the election.

“The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and our party’s legal team are currently reviewing the overwhelming evidence of massive electoral infractions in at least 20 local government areas allegedly won by the PDP with the aim of setting aside the fraudulent results and reclaim the mandate given to Omo-Agage by Deltans.

“It’s an open secret that majority of the electorates in Delta are tired of the PDP’s 24 years of bad governance and they prefer our candidate, DSP Ovie Omo-Agege, to that of the PDP and other candidates and they validated this fact by casting their ballot in Omo-Agege’s favour.”

  • How Abuja duty-free facility’ll curb capital flight – Operator

How Abuja duty-free facility’ll curb capital flight – Operator

The newly commissioned one-stop shopping facility for foreign diplomats will help curb capital flight, The Nation has learnt.

Besides, the facility will help the country track wavers granted foreign diplomats, the operator of the Diplomatic Village, Uche Odozor said.

Odozor, who is the Managing Director, Diplomatic Village, said the three sections: the duty free shop, restaurants and gym and beauty clinic facility has a huge economic benefit for the country.

The government-backed privately-run facility, he said, provides a conducive shopping and relaxation environment for diplomats, thereby making them do their purchases in Nigeria rather than importing their needs from their various countries.

Explaining the benefit of the establishment of the village, Odozor said, “Yes, it has huge economic benefit because before now, every diplomat, a lot of them were bringing in items for their consumption into this country.

“And you know, Nigeria is where we have the largest contingent of deployments on the continent. So, wherever a diplomat could just say, okay, look, I’m bringing in a container and I’m bringing it now and so it is done.

“But now the privilege has been subjected to abuse and that has worried the nation and we have incurred a lot of losses.”

With the Diplomatic Village, he said, “The government can now track the level of waiver granted these diplomats through a database… Government can now keep a record of the waiver. But of course, what it means now is a strict or more stringent measure in terms of controlling the level of arbitrary importation on the part of diplomats, which by their right, they are entitled to.

“So this is going to curb capital flight.

Nasarawa guber: League of Concerned Professionals exonerates Tanko

The League of Concerned Professionals in Plateau State has exonerated the Returning Officer of the recently concluded 2023 general elections in Nasarawa State, Professor Ishaya Tanko, of all allegations levelled against him by the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Nasarawa State.

At a press briefing yesterday in Jos, the Plateau State capital, the league under the leadership of Chesil Drenkat, described the allegations as baseless, noting that Prof. Tanko is a man of integrity, patriotic, forthright, God-fearing and a perfect gentleman that cannot be bought to rig election as claimed by the PDP.

Drenkat said the league finds it imperative to hold the press conference to dispel what they described as smear campaign against the person and personality of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos and to let the world know that the professor is a gentleman of repute with very high integrity, selfless, God-fearing gentleman that it can vouch for.

“As concerned professionals who know and can vouch for the person of Professor Tanko Ishaya, by the special grace of God, the Vice Chancellor of Uni-Jos. We feel compelled to rise to the occasion by not only putting issues into their proper perspective but to counter and dispel this dangerous campaign of calumny against a patriotic, forthright, God fearing perfect gentleman in the person of Prof. Tanko Ishaya.

“Prof. Tanko has contributed to securing, implementing and managing external grants of over 15 Million US Dollars to the University of Jos. He currently holds 4 funded research grants, including the Search and Development of Artificial Intelligence. In the administration of all these funds he attracted to the University of Jos, he has never been found wanting in accountability and management of the funds.

“We submit therefore that Prof. Tanko Ishaya is no stranger to money and no candidate in Nassarawa State irrespective of political party can entice, induce or influence this man of high pedigree with some paltry sums of money…

“We on the Plateau cherish and respect Prof. Tanko as an accomplished scholar, far beyond the entire value associated with the local politics in Nassarawa State. Nassarawa State politics cannot afford the price of Prof. Tanko Ishaya because he is a priceless Jewel with unshakable fear and faith in God in addition to his forthrightness.” the group added.

The group explained that the role played by the professor as a Returning Officer was to await the final result collated and certified at unit level in form EC8a, at Ward level in form EC8b, at L.G.A level in form EC8c before finally getting to him for final collation in form EC8d.

“We challenge any person, party or candidate to fault the role played by Prof. Tanko in this regard. In all the foregoing, the political parties had their agents who were bound to be vigilant and alive to their responsibilities at all stages of the collations.

“It is therefore preposterous, reckless and unfounded to assert or hold the erroneous notion or conclusion that this man of unwavering integrity, incorruptible man of honour can be or was actually induced by money or whatever material thing (s) to proclaim and announce a winner in the Gubernatorial Elections in Nassarawa State. “

They advised the aggrieved party to find areas of electoral infractions/fraud, none conformity to the Electoral Act, 2022/Guidelines that will substantiate and prove their claims at Election Petition Tribunals, instead of seeking to find fault in the role assigned to Prof. Tanko Ishaya as the State Returning officer.

It could be recalled that since the declaration of Nasarawa State Governorship election results that returned the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Alh. Abdullahi Sule as winner, groups of women have continue to stage protest half naked at the state headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC in Lafia, accusing the Returning Officer of the election, Prof. Tanko Ishaya of sub-changing the real winner of the election.

  • Plateau APC warns PDP against false accusation

Plateau APC warns PDP against false accusation

The Plateau State government has warned the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to desist from intimidation and harassment of its civil servants over false and malicious accusations.

Dan Manjang, the State Commissioner for Information and Communication who gave the warning in a statement yesterday, noted that the opposition party has embarked on concocted fiction of lies and propaganda aimed at intimidating civil servants/appointees and castigating the government, with a view to pitching it against the citizens.

The statement said, “First, we are not surprised by the harsh tone of the press statement which smirks of the desperation, arrogance, propaganda and uncouth disposition that the PDP is known for, which reached fever-pitch levels during the recent elections.

“It is unfortunate that a party that has not yet taken over power is already issuing threats and singling out specific government officials for intimidation, harassment and persecution. What will they do if they eventually scale the difficult mountain before them at the Tribunal and the Supreme Court and take over?

“Let it be on record that the Rescue Administration of Governor Simon Bako Lalong has nothing to hide or fear and can never be involved in any looting, conversion of public assets or any criminal conduct in contract awards as alleged.”

“The PDP may wish to note that the Lalong Rescue Administration applied and was admitted into the Open Government Partnership (OGP) where it got the global Award for Transparency and Accountability in 2021 in Seoul South Korea. Under the same Administration, Plateau State was adjudged the second least corrupt state in Nigeria in the 2nd Corruption Survey Report released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The PDP cannot claim to forget in a hurry that our party, the APC, which was the first in the history of Plateau State to take over power from an incumbent, did not display such arrogance, pride and flagrant abuse of power till date, even when it had more than a million reasons and evidence to do so.

“We also take the opportunity to strongly advise civil servants and appointees to continue to carry out their normal duties without fear or intimidation as they have done over the years,” the commissioner stated.

The government called on all its partners, clients, contractors and patrons in both public and private sectors to ignore any act of harassment from the PDP or its agents.

  • Adamawa: APC suspends Gwadabawa ward exco for suspending Boss Mustpaha

Adamawa: APC suspends Gwadabawa ward exco for suspending Boss Mustpaha

The State Working Committee (SWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa State has suspended the Gwadabawa ward executives of the party for announcing the suspension of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, from the party.

The APC executives in Gwadabawa Ward in Yola North LGA, where Boss Mustapha has his political base was on Thursday reported as having suspended the SGF, allegedly for not contributing to the success of the party.

The state Exco of the party, however, moved against the ward executives, Saturday, describing Boss Mustapha’s purported suspension as “unconstitutional and malicious”, and went ahead to pronounce its own suspension of the ward officials.

Secretary of the party in the state, Dr Raymond Chidama, who addressed newsmen at the party’s state secretariat in Yola, said the SWC received the resolution of Yola North Executive on the unconstitutional conduct of the ward Exco members who went without cogent reason and due process to announce to the media that they had suspended Boss Mustapha from the party.

The party scribe stressed that the suspension on the ward excos followed the recommendation of the Yola North Local Government APC officials, who called for formation of a caretaker committee to replace the errant ward Excos.

Chidama said the SWC, upon receipt of the report, formed another committee which studied the report of the Yola North Exco and ratified it.

He recalled how ward and state excos respectively recently made similar moves by suspending the North East National Vice Chairman of the party, Mustapha Salihu and the governorship candidate, Senator Aishatu Ahmed Dahiru (Binani), both of which were immediately invalidated, while cautioning lower level party executives to desist from such acts.

He emphasised that the Gwadabawa Ward excos were an embarrassment to the APC and President Muhammadu Buhari.

He added that the state Working Committee had also approved a seven-man caretaker committee to take the place of the suspended executives.

The state party secretary said, “All the removed and suspended members of Gwadabawa ward are hereby directed to hand-over all party properties in their possession to the chairman of Yola North Local Government Area immediately.”
