I didn’t refuse to register as APC member – Okorocha

    By Chris Njoku, Owerri

Former Imo Governor Senator Rochas Okorocha has described the claim by Governor Hope Uzodimma that he refused to register during the All Progressives Congress (APC) membership registration and revalidation exercise as false.

Uzodimma had told the APC’s appeal Committee on the party’s registration and revalidation exercise that Senator Okorocha refused to be registered as APC member in Imo during the exercise.

Okorocha, who spoke through his Media Adviser, Sam Onwuemeodo, said such claim could only be laughable to most Nigerians who still remember how APC came to Imo and South-East.

“I needed to revalidate his membership of APC and not to register as APC member. Governor Uzodimma has always delighted in propaganda that does not fly again,” he said.

According to him, the registration and revalidation exercise didn’t take place anywhere in Imo.

“It was done at the Nick Banquet Hall in Government House, Owerri. The Governor’s appointees were generating fictitious names at the Local Government level and taken them to the Government House, to be enrolled.

“We challenge the Governor to tell the public how the exercise was carried out in Imo. Whether it was by polling unit by polling unit, like Okorocha did when APC anchored. Or, Ward by Ward or by Local Government by Local Government. And let’s take off from there.

“If Okorocha had refused to be registered like our Governor had claimed, what happened to Senator Ifeanyi Araraume and his Destiny Political family, who produced Six House of Assembly members, that joined others to give Governor Uzodinma the Majority in the House?

“What happened to Ugwumba Uche Nwosu who owned the APC ticket with which he (Chief Uzodinma) is Governor today? And who produced nine House of Assembly members. What happened to the House of Representatives’ members of the APC Stock?

“What happened to top Imo politicians in APC and their supporters who could not go to the Government House to be part of the abracadabra, including Sir Jude Ejiogu, Lady Chidinma Uwajumogu, who was a senatorial aspirant and a mobilizer of note, High Chief Chidi Ibeh (MFR) and so on?”he queried.

He advised Governor Uzodimma to take the path of reconciliation and avoid undue political bickering.

“What Governor Uzodinma needs to do now is to take the paths of reconciliation, restitution, peace and tolerance. The governor cannot continue to exercise undue Political muscle or glory on needless propaganda.

“Humility is a virtue. Sincerity is also a virtue. While truth is sacred. At times, it is not all about us. But all about God and posterity,” he stated.

He also advised the Appeal Panel to take note of what the Governor had told them but should ignore that in the overall interest of the party.

Grammy-nominated singer Somi to release new album ft Seun Kuti, Angelique Kidjo, others

    By Sampson Unamka

Grammy-nominated Rwandan-Ugandan vocalist and songwriter Somi will release her new album, Zenzile: The re-imagination of Miriam Makeba, a celebration of the late Makeba’s musical contributions and messages of social justice on July 30.

The album, which will be released on the Salon Africana label, features Somi’s renditions of Makeba’s best known songs—both Makeba’s compositions and covers— starting with the iconic single “Pata Pata,” a global hit from 1967.

Recognising Makeba’s continental fame, Somi worked with a selection of guests from across Africa and diaspora to bring her vision to life.

From South Africa, Grammy-winning male vocal group Ladysmith Black Mambazo, singer-songwriter Msaki, vocalist and activist Thandiswa Mazwai, and jazz pianist-composer Nduduzo Makhathini joined Somi for the tribute.

Other collaborators include American jazz singer Gregory Porter, Nigerian Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti and celebrated Beninese singer-songwriter and activist, Angelique Kidjo.

After the release of Zenzile, Somi will take the story of Makeba’s life to the theater stage with her original new musical Dreaming Zenzile.

Written by and starring Somi and directed by Obie Award winner Lileana Blain-Cruz, the production is set to premiere later in 2021.

Dreaming Zenzile features a cast of five—including Somi as Makeba—a live band, original music and reinterpretations of Makeba’s popular repertoire.

For her first foray into theater, Somi was named a 2019 Sundance Theater Fellow.

Regarded as one of Africa’s first international superstars, Makeba (whose given name is Zenzile) elevated the spirit of a continent, including her native South Africa.

Her courage, however, was met with blacklisting that began with her marriage to civil rights activist Stokely Carmichael.

Somi’s lifelong love of Makeba’s music and personal strength led to a record that she hopes will inspire a rediscovery of Makeba’s life and work.

Somi said: “This album is my attempt to honor the unapologetic voice of an African woman who inevitably made room for my own journey and countless other African artists. In short, I owe her. We all do.”

Born in Illinois, Somi has always used her artistry to pay homage to the complexity of life on the African continent.

In 2014, she released a critically acclaimed album titled The Lagos Music Salon inspired by an 18-month sabbatical she spent in the city.

Somi has released six other albums, scoring positions on Billboard’s World Music, Jazz, and Heatseekers charts.

Her records have featured guests including Common, Angelique Kidjo, and renowned South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela, who became her longtime mentor.

Earlier this year, Somi made history as the first African woman to be nominated for a Grammy in any of the award’s jazz categories.

She has been widely honored as a Soros Equality Fellow, a TED Senior Fellow, a USA Doris Duke Fellow, a 2021 Grammy nominee, and a recipient of two NAACP Image Awards.

Somi performed at Carnegie Hall alongside Hugh Masekela, Dave Matthews, and Vusi Mahlesela in celebration of South African democracy, and was invited by UN Secretary-General to perform in commemoration of the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery.

    Controversy over Shekau

    By Okodili Ndidi, Abuja

Controversy yesterday trailed alleged killing of Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, by a splinter group, Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP).

The Nation gathered from an intelligence source that the Boko Haram leader was killed in a supremacy battle with ISWAP fighters, who criticised his mode of operation, especially attacks on mosques, killing of women and children.

Another source, however, said he was “badly injured and rescued by his fighters.

The Nigerian military has, however, placed Army and Air Force formations in Borno State on alert over possible movement of dislodged insurgents.

The Defence Headquarters could not confirm the killing of Shekau, Nigeria’s most wanted terrorist as at the time of filing this report.

Acting Director Defence Media Operations, Brig.-Gen. Bernard Onyeuko, said the military could not confirm the development yet.

The DHQ had, while defending repeated claims of killing of Shekau by troops, explained that “Shekau” is a mere title bestowed on the leader of the group and not a name of an individual.

Former Coordinator of the Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. John Enenche, now retired, told reporters that “Shekau” had been killed by troops on several occasions.

The ISWAP recently dislodged Boko Haram in some section of the Sambisa forest, it was learnt.

The splinter group was reported to have carried out several raids on Boko Haram camps and carried away their women and children.

According to situation report by one of the intelligence services, “on May 19, 2021, about 1829hours, ISWAP top fighter Baana Duguri – on this selector – geolocated around Sambisa forest Pulka Gwoza LGA BRS, informed ISWAP Logistics Commander Modu Sulum – geolocated opposite General hospital Konduga LGA Borno State that they killed Abubakar Shekau…

“Duguri disclosed that the ISWAP fighters’ team surrounded the Boko Haram leader with his team and shooting ensued between the two factions. Duguri further added that Shekau detonated a bomb and killed himself when he observed that the ISWAP fighters wanted to capture him alive.

“Furthermore, Duguri informed Sulumi that the two sides also lost some fighters during the shooting. He averred that even yesterday, ISWAP was pursuing Abubakar Shekau and he Shekau discarded his cap and ran. But today, the pursuit continued and he was finally killed. Duguri asked Modu Sulumi if the other Boko Haram members, who fled are returning to their houses.

“In his response, Sulumi rejoiced over the death of Abubakar Shekau and glorified God over the success. He also said few Boko Haram members are returning to their houses.”

PDP to Buhari: engage Nigerians at home in zonal town hall meetings

    By Gbade Ogunwale, Abuja

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to hold sessions with Nigerians via townhall meetings in the six geo-political zones just like the one he had with Nigerian citizens living in France.

The party said President Buhari should be bold enough to face Nigerians at home and give account of his administration in the last six years.

In a statement yesterday by the spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party noted that it was not enough for President Buhari to visit far away France and attempt to use unsuspecting Nigerians living in Paris in a desperate effort to window dress what the party described as the shambolic economic and security situation foisted on the nation by his administration.

“Our party holds as despicable that Presidency handlers could opt to ridicule Mr. President by making him to believe that Nigerians in the Diaspora could be swayed by cosmetic claims when they are aware of the contrary political, economic and security realities on ground in our country,” the PDP said.

The party said it found it ludicrous that President Buhari asserted in the Paris meeting that he was committed to free and fair election, when in reality, he failed to sign the Electoral Act amendment Bill.
