Ujiri wants professionals as sports minister

Masai Ujiri, the president of Toronto Raptors’ basketball operations said  Nigeria must stop anti-productive practice of appointing non-professional sports ministers based on political considerations.

This ensures that the country’s largest and most productive population are denied the quality leadership at the policy level that unleashes their great potentials.

Speaking alongside the President, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, at the launch of the Nigeria Exchange (NGX) Group, Masai said the nation must take its youths and sports very seriously for the nation to  achieve its economic and political potentials as they remain the country’s surest path to global success.

Describing the National Stadium, Lagos, as an eyesore, Masai, who in 2003 founded “Giants of Africa” to discover basketball talent, and once served as director of the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders Africa, wondered why such a great piece of real estate has not become income-generating like other sports complexes the world over.

He pointed to what has been achieved in the state-of-the-art 10, 000-seater Kigali indoor Arena in Rwanda which is currently playing host to the inaugural Basketball Africa League (BAL)  which kicked off in Kigali on Sunday.

Masai challenged the other speakers at the launch to support sports business which is one of the biggest income earners the world over.

    Eagles strike force thrills Iheanacho

    By Oluwamayomikun Orekoya

Leicester City centre-forward Kelechi Iheanacho has praised his  striking compatriots including Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, Genk’s Paul Onuachu, Almeria’s Sadiq Umar, Lorient’s Terem Moffi and Crotone’s Simy Nwankwo for their goal scoring performances this season.

Iheanacho has been in a rich vein of form and netted his 20th  goal of the season in Leicester’s 1-2 defeat to Chelsea on Tuesday. The attacker also helped Leicester win the FA Cup for the first time.

Umar has been turning heads with Almeria and is close to helping the club return to La Liga, having scored 26 goals while Paul Onuachu has also been in terrific form, for Genk in the current campaign firing on all cylinders and has now taken his tally to 37 goals across all competitions.

Simy Nwankwo was a shining spark sparking Crotone’s disappointing season, netting 20 goals for the relegated Serie A side while Terem Moffi has 16 goals in the French Ligue 1.

“If I go on social media, I see Nigerian strikers scoring. I ask myself what is going on,” Iheanacho told ESPN.”It is very good for the country, It would help us move forward.”

Iheanacho hinted that there is no competition in the national team, adding that each player brings their unique qualities to the team.

“There is no competition in the team, Everyone has their own quality and the way they play,” he added.  “It is left for the manager to know how he is going to utilize everyone in their position.

“It doesn’t matter who gets called up tomorrow, all that matters is you perform very well for your country and give your best when you are called up,” he noted.

    Okpekpe Race returns May 2022

The eighth edition of the Okpekpe international 10 km road race will hold in May 2022 in Okpekpe, Edo state of Nigeria, the organiser, Pamodzi Sports Marketing has announced.

Okpekpe 10-km race, the first road race in West Africa to be granted a label by World Athletics and designated as one of the leading road races around the world, could not hold in 2020 and will not hold in 2021 due to Covid-19.

”We are happy to announce that the eighth edition of the silver-label Okpekpe international 10km road race will be held in May 2022,”said Mike Itemuagbor, CEO of Pamodzi Sports Marketing. ‘The outbreak of the Covid-19 ensured that, like many other label races across the globe, our event could not hold in 2020 and will not hold this year.

“This is an international race that involves the invitation and participation of foreign athletes and their managers as well as the technical delegates from World Athletics and the government’s Covid-19 protocols in terms of travel and other logistics have to be enforced including the lockdown rules introduced by the Nigerian government,” he added.

Itemuagbor thanked the Edo State government led by His Excellency Godwin Obaseki, and his Deputy, Comrade Phillip Shaibu, and the race sponsors for their concern and support and assured that the race will return bigger.

”Our target is to make the race the first gold label road race in West Africa. The race made history in 2015 when it became the first road running event to be granted a bronze label. Two years later, it scored another first as the first silver label road race to hold anywhere in West Africa and our target still remains the gold,” he said.

National Stadiums rehabilitation hits advanced stage

The dream to have the national teams return to action either at the Surulere National Stadium or the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Abuja may soon become a reality as construction work at the two stadia have reached advanced stage.

The planting of the hybrid Bermuda grass at the National Stadium Surulere is in the final stage , just as that of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

Said one of the site engineers: “We are in the final stage of construction, as I speak to you we are planting the grass to ensure that before the end of June/July, the stadium can be ready for international matches. There’s no better way to appreciate the Sports Minister, Mr. Sunday Dare other than to complete the job on schedule.

“The Minister has been on our neck with proper monitoring with the mandate that we must get the stadium ready in due course.”

The site engineer saluted the efforts of the minister and assured that the project will be completed on time.

AJ mocks Wilder on £20million fight purse

Anthony Joshua has joked that he is going to set up a Go Fund Me page to raise money to pay off Deontay Wilder after the American heavyweight won his legal battle to get a third fight with Tyson Fury.

After months of negotiations, AJ appeared to have finally struck a deal to fight Fury in a mammoth undisputed bout in Saudi Arabia in August only for the event to be derailed after an American judge ruled that Wilder was entitled to a trilogy fight with the Gypsy King.

Fury dismantled his rival in Las Vegas in February 2020 – the last time either man fought – but there was a clause in their contract which entitled the loser to yet another rematch.

There have been suggestions that Wilder might be convinced to step aside and allow for the Battle of Britain to take place – and then take on the victor at a later date – but the Bronze Bomber will only give up his title shot for a huge fee.

According to Joshua, Wilder is asking for an astonishing £20million to step aside and the Brit took aim at both the American and Fury on social media, suggesting neither man really wants to fight him.

“‘I’m thinking about starting a Go Fund Me page to raise money for Wilder’s step-aside payment so I can smoke that fat guy with skinny legs from Manchester,” wrote Joshua on Instagram, quoting the supposed £20m fee. “These heavyweights need a podcast or something because they do more talking than fighting.”

Fury’s promoter, Bob Arum, says a deal for the lineal champion to fight Wilder – not Joshua – in Las Vegas on July 24 has already been pencilled in, with AJ’s promoter Eddie Hearn now working on a showdown with Oleksandr Usyk.

    NLC restores electricity in Kaduna

    By AbdulGafar Alabelewe, Kaduna

The Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC) has restored electricity in many parts of Kaduna metropolis.

The workers cut off power supply to the entire state on Sunday to kick start the five-day warning strike over the sack of 4,000 workers by government.

But the strike was called off on Wednesday afternoon after the Federal Government invited Organised Labour and Kaduna Government to a meeting on Thursday to resolve the issue in Abuja.

As at 10:30pm, electricity was restored in many parts of Kaduna metropolis.

As the time of filing this report, there was power supply in Badiko, Gwamna road, part of Kurmi Mashi and Kabala Costain.

But areas like Barnawa, Millennium City, Sabo GRA and major parts of the Kaduna city centre were still in darkness.

Kaduna Electric spokesman confirmed restoration of power supply.

He said any part of the city without electricity was possibly suffering from one local fault or the other.

Kaduna vows not to negotiate with NLC until…

    By Oluwatomisin Amokeoja

The Kaduna State Government has vowed it will not negotiate with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) until electricity is restored.

It claimed it was yet to see any evidence the NLC has suspended the five-day warning strike.

The Nation reported the workers called off the five-day warning strike on Wednesday in deference to an invitation by the Federal Government to Organised Labour and Kaduna Government to a meeting on Thursday.

But government said on Wednesday night “NLC is yet to back off from its economic and social sabotage.”

It accused NLC of illegally shutting down the electricity facility on Sunday while insisting on “the restoration of this service.”

The statement by Media Adviser to Governor El Rufai, Muyiwa Adekeye, reads in part: “Electric power is yet to be restored, after it was shut down at dawn on Sunday, 16th May 2021, in brazen violation of the laws protecting essential services and infrastructure.

“That action removed any basis for state government officials to meet the NLC last Sunday.

“Denying our people electricity about 18 hours to the advertised commencement of their organised sabotage was akin to putting a gun on the government’s head.

“Government has a lawful duty not to indulge in blackmail.

“Restoring electricity is vital to relieving some of the pain that needless acts of lawlessness have
    inflicted on our people.

“The unimpeded provision of essential services is vital to civilised order.

“Those who have disrupted it should promptly reverse themselves, not expect that it will be a matter for negotiation, much less being viewed as a precondition.

“KDSG will not participate in such a negotiation or countenance one whilst our people are still being denied their right to electricity.”

  • PSG win sixth French Cup in seven years

PSG win sixth French Cup in seven years

Paris St-Germain won the French Cup for the sixth time in seven years by beating Monaco at the Stade de France.

Mauro Icardi put Mauricio Pochettino’s side ahead after 19 minutes, slotting in from Kylian Mbappe’s pass after he had pounced on a defensive error.

Mbappe then sealed victory for the 14-time winners with a delightful chipped finish nine minutes from the end.

It is PSG’s second trophy under former Tottenham boss Pochettino, following the Trophee des Champions in January.

Defending champions PSG are one point behind leaders Lille going into the final round of Ligue 1 fixtures as they chase a league and cup double.

They visit 16th-placed Brest on Sunday at 20:00 BST, while Lille are away to mid-table Angers. BBC

  • Federico Chiesa reclaims Coppa Italia for Juventus

Federico Chiesa reclaims Coppa Italia for Juventus

Federico Chiesa’s cool finish earned Andrea Pirlo his first major trophy as a manager as Juventus beat Atalanta in the Coppa Italia final.

Chiesa, who had earlier hit the post from Cristiano Ronaldo’s neat backheel, exchanged passes with Dejan Kulusevski to win a 14th Italian Cup for Juve.

Kulusevski had given Juventus a first-half lead with a classy curling effort before Ruslan Malinovskyi levelled.

The final was played in front of 4,300 fans at Sassuolo’s Mapei Stadium.

It was the first high-profile football game in Italy to have been played in front of supporters for more than a year, after the country was hit heavily by the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

Juventus, fifth in Serie A with one game remaining after winning the title for nine successive seasons, were facing the prospect of a first season without a major trophy in a decade as new boss Pirlo, who took over last summer, struggled to find his feet.

But they created the better chances throughout against an Atalanta side who were unable to add to their solitary 1963 cup triumph, losing a second final in three seasons after their 2019 defeat by Lazio.

Atalanta began well as Jose Luis Palomino was denied by the legs of veteran keeper Gianluigi Buffon but Kulusevski bent in a fantastic first-time effort to give Juve the lead.

Malinovskyi drilled Atalanta level from just inside the box but Chiesa coolly tucked underneath Pierluigi Gollini to give Juventus, runners-up on penalties to Napoli in 2020, their fifth Coppa Italia in seven seasons.

Atalanta never threatened a second leveller and their frustrations boiled over late on as Rafael Toloi, who had been substituted several minutes earlier, was sent off for dissent shown from the sidelines. BBC

  • Liverpool move into top four with win at Burnley

Liverpool move into top four with win at Burnley

Liverpool took a huge step towards claiming one of the two remaining top-four spots with one round of Premier League games to go courtesy of a victory at Burnley that was harder work than the scoreline suggests.

Liverpool’s incredible late win at West Bromwich Albion on Sunday kept their Champions League hopes alive and they took full advantage on Wednesday through a cool finish from Roberto Firmino, a first club goal for Nathaniel Phillips and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s late lashed effort.

The Reds are now in the fourth Champions League spot, level on points with fifth-placed Leicester City and with a goal difference four better than the Foxes.

Brazil striker Firmino added to the brace he scored at Manchester United six days ago with a neat side-foot strike from Andy Robertson’s pull-back to the penalty spot.

Centre-back Phillips then headed in Sadio Mane’s cross early in the second half to give Liverpool a cushion.

Substitute Oxlade-Chamberlain sealed the win in injury time, smashing home a shot after a neat turn to evade Charlie Taylor.

Three goals was, in truth, a poor return from a game packed with excellent opportunities for both sides.

Chris Wood was a menace throughout and should have netted with a shot from close range while Mohamed Salah and especially Thiago Alcantara – who dragged an angled shot wide of the far post – were culpable for Liverpool.
