  • Ndidi predicts tough test against Man Utd

Ndidi predicts tough test against Man Utd

Two of the Premier League’s top four sides meet today as the season nears its climax and Nigeria international Wilfred Ndidi said the Foxes’ targets won’t change, irrespective of venue or opposition, especially at such a pivotal moment in the campaign.

Looking ahead to tackling Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s Red Devils, the 24-year-old told LCFC TV: “It’s one of those games. We have to try and do our best to get something out of it. We’ve got three games left, so it’s that part of the season where every point is really important.

“It’s a tough game. Obviously, the last time we met, we knocked them out of the FA Cup, but it’s going to be a difficult game. We’ll look forward to it and see what comes out of it. They’re a really good team, a really strong side. The players they have are top quality.

“They’ve really done well in the league and the Europa League. They will also want to finish as high as possible, which is how every team wants to finish the season. It’s something that means we have to go there, see what comes out of it, and we’ll give everything.”

City have won 10 and lost just two of their away Premier League fixtures this season, but Ndidi says that success comes down to always taking the opposition seriously, regardless of where they are in the league table.

“In the Premier League, it doesn’t matter if you’re playing Manchester United or another team, you’re just going for the points,” he added, speaking at LCFC Training Ground in Seagrave. “We’ve been on a fantastic run away from home.

“We’ve had some ups and downs and some games where we should have got more points, but we’re looking forward to this one and we’ll be trying as much as we can to get points. We’re in the last part of the season so every point is very important for us.”

CAF Super Cup: Ahly to face Berkane in Qatar

The delayed CAF Super Cup match between Al Ahly of Egypt and Renaissance Berkane of Morocco will be played on May 28 in Doha, the organisers have confirmed.

Coronavirus and disagreements over the venue led to several postponements of the annual fixture between the winners of the CAF Champions League and the second-tier CAF Confederation Cup. Last November, Ahly beat Zamalek 2-1 in an all-Egypt Champions League final and Berkane edged another Egyptian club, Pyramids, 1-0 to lift the Confederation Cup.

This will be third consecutive Super Cup match to be staged in Qatar, who will host the 2022 World Cup, the first to be staged in the Middle East.

Previously asked why an African match was being played in Asia, a CAF official said taking the game outside the continent helped to “broaden the appeal of the Super Cup”.

Traditionally, the match was hosted by the African champions, leading them to win 21 of 23 matches between 1996 and 2018.

But the switch to Doha saw successive victories by the Confederation Cup title-holders, Raja Casablanca of Morocco and Zamalek. Ahly have won the Super Cup a record six times in eight appearances while Berkane are debutants.

  • Juventus face Serie A expulsion

    Juventus face Serie A expulsion

The president of the Italian FA president Gabriele Gravina confirmed yesterday on Naples radio station Kiss Kiss that the Turin club must pull out of the plans to form a European Super League if they are to remain part of Italy’s top flight.

Juventus remain part of the ESL plans with Barcelona and Real Madrid, despite the other Italian clubs involved in the project removing themselves within 48 hours of the announcement.

Barcelona’s official website released a statement two days ago that came from each of the clubs still involved with the league which confirmed that they are still committed to the plans.

Asked about the stance of I Bianconeri, Gravina said: “The rules are clear. If Juventus is still part of the Super League when it enters next season, it can’t participate in Serie A, I would be sorry for the fans but rules are rules and they apply to everyone. I hope this holdout ends soon.”

While the three clubs maintain that the plans will go ahead, they are likely to receive a ban from European competition if they do not concede defeat to UEFA soon.

Juventus, who dropped out of the Champions League places in Serie A after a 3-0 defeat to AC Milan, are currently refusing to be reintegrated with European football’s governing body.

  • COVID-19: EPL clubs to host 10,000 supporters for final home games

COVID-19: EPL clubs to host 10,000 supporters for final home games

Sporting venues across England will be able to welcome back spectators from next Monday, the Prime Minister has confirmed.

Boris Johnson said at a press conference yesterday  that the Government was proceeding with its plan to take the third step in its coronavirus recovery road map, first set out on February 22.

“We’ll unlock the turnstiles of our sports stadia subject to capacity limits,” Johnson said in his opening speech, as he detailed the further easing of lockdown in England.

It means larger seated outdoor venues will be able to admit up to 10,000 spectators from next week.

The Premier League pushed its penultimate round of matches back to May 18 and 19 so that every club would be able to play one game in front of supporters before the end of the season on May 23.

The league confirmed last week that the matches will be open to home supporters only.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said: “It will be brilliant to see fans back. They have been hugely missed and the Premier League has not been the same without them. Their presence will ensure a fantastic finale to the end of our season.

“Although only a small number of home fans will be at our matches next week, this is an important step in our return to normality.

“We will continue to work with the Government and other authorities as our priority is to have full vibrant stadiums – including away supporters – from the start of next season. Only then will we get back to the real Premier League.”

For smaller outdoor venues capacities will be capped at 4,000 or 50 per cent, whichever is the lowest. The indoor venue cap will be 1,000 or 50 per cent, whichever is lower.

The decision to ease restrictions comes as the country continues to benefit from an accelerating vaccination programme and a fall in deaths and hospitalisations related to Covid-19.

The Government hopes to allow venues to admit significantly higher numbers of spectators from June 21 onwards and it has set up an events research programme (ERP) to test out different safety measures at a range of sporting and cultural ‘pilot’ events in order to achieve that.

The first ERP sports event with spectators in attendance this year was day one of the World Snooker Championship on April 17, with crowds at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield being increased as the tournament progressed, culminating in a full house for the final on May 2 and 3.

The FA Cup semi-final between Leicester and Southampton at Wembley on April 18 was the first outdoor sports event to welcome back spectators, though it was limited to residents and key workers living locally to the stadium.

The following weekend’s Carabao Cup final was the first outdoor event attended by fans of the clubs involved. Manchester City and Tottenham were each able to offer tickets to 2,000 supporters.

There have been no major hiccups in the ERP so far, which continues on Saturday when 21,000 people are due to go to the FA Cup final between Chelsea and Leicester at Wembley, where Prince William is set to be on hand to present the trophy to the winners.

It was confirmed on Monday that the Duke of Cambridge and FA president will attend the game.
