The Rotary Club of Lagos, Festac Cosmopolitan, has  donated birth kits to expectant mothers at the Amuwo Odofin Local Government Secretariat,  Festac.

Receiving the items from the club, the Council Chairman, Valentine Buraimoh, described the humanitarian gesture as life saving, adding that it would go a long to solve health challenges in the area.

He expressed appreciation to the club and enjoined other associations of the same calibre to emulate the kind gesture.

President of the club, Uzoamaka Akaneme, said the club decided to make the donation, particularly to pregnant women, who are due for delivery, because most of them are low income earners, who might not be able to afford some of the birth kits.

“This is also to celebrate maternal and child health, which is celebrated by Rotary Club in this month of April,” she added.

About 25 pregnant women who were at the health centre for their ante-natal care received the kits. The health centre also received two fetal doppler machines used to check the heartbeat of an unborn child from the club.

Akaneme noted that items such as cotton wool, delivery blade, delivery pads and other materials were contained in the branded bag, which she said would also be useful to the women as nursing mothers.

In his speech, the Project Director and Past Assistant Governor, Ik Ugwu, said the project would bring about reduction in maternal and child mortality, enhance safe and hygienic delivery, as well as alleviate poverty in the area.

He said the donation, which was to mark the Rotary celebration of maternal and child health, was equally a practical demonstration of the Club’s commitment to assist the Primary Health Centre to continue to provide quality care and services.

He promised that it would be a continuous project. “We will be praying for the mothers for safe delivery. We want the unborn child to know that even before he/she was born, there were people who were already caring and those people are the members of the Rotary Club of Lagos, Festac Cosmopolitan,” he said.

Lekki residents protest poor services from estate managers

    By Raymond Mordi

Residents of Ocean Bay Estate, Lafiaji, in Lekki Peninsula, Lagos State, took the streets recently to protest against what they described as poor services being provided by the managers of the estate, Octo5 Holdings Ltd.

They lamented the poor power and smelly water being provided at an exorbitant cost and the security challenges in the estate. Speaking with reporters during the protest, the chairperson of Ocean Bay Resident Association, Mrs. Jite Titiloye condemned the quality of service provided by the company. She said residents not only have to put up the poor service delivery but the lack of transparency and horrible communication from managers of the company.

Titiloye added: “We are here as members of our residents’ association. We say no to this oppression, no to poor service, no to lack of transparency and no to lack of accountability.”

Victoria Igwe, who said she has lived in the estate for almost half a decade, said the brazen attitude being exhibited by the facility managers must stop. “First and foremost, I will like for the brazen impunity to stop. We are paying for the services; we are not your servants. I don’t want you to handle me like we are toddlers or slaves or whatever. You don’t communicate properly, then you give me smelly water and you give me haphazard power that damages my appliances. This is upsetting”.

The Chief Executive Officer of Octo5 Holdings Ltd, Babajide Odusolu absolved himself of the allegations leveled against him and his company. His words: “We are in Lekki. I redeemed this entire place in 2003; it was a swampy area. This is a water area, so there will always be water. This estate has one of the best drainages of any location in Lekki.

Bayern crowned champions after Dortmund beat Leipzig

Bayern Munich were confirmed as Bundesliga champions for the ninth straight season Saturday after Borussia Dortmund beat second-placed RB Leipzig 3-2.

England winger Jadon Sancho netted twice in Dortmund’s home win, a result that meant Bayern become champions without kicking a ball before their home game against Borussia Moenchengladbach later on Saturday evening. Before they even kick off, Bayern have 71 points to Leipzig’s 64.

The victory lifted Dortmund into the Champions League places, but Eintracht Frankfurt can knock them out of fourth place if they beat Mainz on Sunday.

Even without star striker Erling Braut Haaland, Dortmund were 2-0 up at the start of the second half with goals by Marco Reus and Sancho.

Leipzig fought back with a Lukas Klostermann header before Dani Olmo equalised only for Sancho to grab the winner with superb footwork.

The clubs meet again on Thursday in the German Cup final at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium.

With Haaland watching in the stands as his thigh injury continues to sideline him, Dortmund raced into the lead after only seven minutes.

    Leeds dent Spurs’ Euro hopes

Tottenham’s hopes of finishing the season inside the Premier League’s top four took a huge blow as they suffered a 3-1 defeat at Leeds United. Spurs’ interim boss Ryan Mason had targeted four wins to finish the season and with Leicester’s surprise defeat at Newcastle on Friday, the door had just been opened for Spurs in the race to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

However, they suffered an early set back when Stuart Dallas gave the hosts the lead in the 13th minute.

Tottenham cancelled out Dallas’ opener to draw level in the 25th minute through Heung-Min Son, but Leeds regained the lead just before half-time as Patrick Bamford converted Ezgjan Alioski’s cut-back from close range.

  • Chelsea late win makes Man City wait for title

Chelsea late win makes Man City wait for title

Sergio Aguero made a mess of a Panenka penalty as Chelsea ensured Manchester City must wait a little longer to wrap up the Premier League title by fighting back to earn a dramatic win at Etihad Stadium.

City, needing three points to become champions of England for the seventh time, took the lead just before half-time through Raheem Sterling’s close-range strike.

Aguero had a glorious chance to make it 2-0 from the spot moments later when Billy Gilmour fouled Gabriel Jesus, but the Argentina striker opted for a dinked effort that was easily saved by Edouard Mendy.

It proved a costly miss, as Chelsea improved after the break and equalised when Cesar Azpilicueta set up Hakim Ziyech to fire home from the edge of the area.

The visitors had two more efforts ruled out for offside before Marcus Alonso won it for them in injury time, meeting Timo Werner’s pull-back and sending the ball looping over Ederson.

This was Chelsea’s second win over City in the space of three weeks, following their victory in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley in April.

The two sides will meet again in the Champions League final in Istanbul at the end of this month.
