Nigeria will regret if Pantami is sacked, Gumi warns

    By Alao Abiodun

Controversial Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has warned against removal or sack of embattled Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami.

The Nation reports there have been calls for the resignation of the Minister over his pass support for terror groups, which he has since renounced.

Many Nigerians have demanded for his sack or resignation, insisting his renunciation was not enough.

But Gumi during an interview with Roots TV monitored by The Nation, said the allegations against the embattled Minister were not true and should be discarded.

“You cannot Islamise the whole world. Jesus Christ came; he could not Christianise the whole world. Nobody can Islamise or Christianise Nigeria,” Gumi began.

“All his actions, one hundred percent, shows he is not a terrorist. Those who are terrorists are after his life. The Minister should continue. His presence there is fighting the terrorist ideology.

“Show me one person he has killed. He has not killed anybody. He has not ordered the killing of anybody. Discard the fake news.

The man is stabilising a government among a section of youths, which we want them to come and join in nation-building. They should not throw him away. Leave him. He is not a terrorist sympathiser.

“And you people are fighting them. No. You should get more people like Pantami and put them in power. It will stabilise. Don’t remove him. You’ll regret,” he stated.

  • ‘Why north will prefer Asiwaju for president’

‘Why north will prefer Asiwaju for president’

    By Tajudeen Adebanjo

The Director-General of Tinubu Support Organisation (TSO), Aminu Suleiman, has said that the North will prefer the national leader of All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

Suleiman said this during a meeting of the organisation.

He said Tinubu has sacrificed a lot and has what it takes to lead the country.

According to him, Tinubu is well accepted in the north.

“Asiwaju Tinubu’s Colloquium in Kano showed that he is well accepted by the northerner. If someone is accepted in Kano, the heart of the north, it means he is accepted in the whole north.

“If Kano accepts you, then you can be rest assured that you will be accepted by Jigawa, Kaduna and other northern states,” he said.

He boasted that former Vice President Abubakar Atiku would be no match for Tinubu in the north if both contested in 2023 election.

“For Asiwaju Tinubu to have given Atiku and Ribadu (Nuhu) tickets on the platforms under his (Tinubu’s) control, this shows that he is a true leader. He can contest then but he considered the duo.  Northerners are not ready to vote for Atiku this time around, we have supported him so many times,” he said.

Lagos State TSO Coordinator Niyi Amir Gbodimowo, said TSO cut across ethnic, religious and demographic groups.

He said the primary concern of the organisation was socio-economic development.

“We draw inspiration from the statements of Asiwaju Tinubu. He has consistently shown good leadership,” he said.

He noted that the group is  campaigning for Asiwaju Tinubu due to his performance over the years.

“His pattern of building strong institutions powered by humans was encouraging. He spots talent across different levels of government,” he said.

According to him, the group wants Tinubu to run for president in 2023 due to his exceptional leadership.

“He stands above all other people eyeing the seat. He has not announced his ambition for the presidency but we want him to run for it.”

  • Oduenyi and relentless pursuit of a dream

Oduenyi and relentless pursuit of a dream

    By Samuel Oti

A nimble and fast striker Ugochukwu Oduenyi has remained a talent hunting for the green land of gong and glory in the football world.

Oduenyi’s dream of playing for Manchester City stumbled in 2015 despite training with top players in the team with the accompanying Patrick Viera. He enjoyed the Etihad stadium with the hope of signing for the English Champions but there was broken down talk between the club and his representative.

Though another factor was the fact that the club had signed Kelechi Iheanacho after a blistering career in the national team. Despite that, Oduenyi has moved on from what could have taken him to the center of the world.

Maybe Guardiola would have fancy his tiki-taka playing style with a mold of height that gives him advantage over defenders, Oduenyi could have become a success in the English premier league going by his qualities.

Several top scouts have described Oduenyi as a quality player. Obviously, the Nigerian striker has yet to display his potential at world stage, no thanks to injury occurrence sometimes ago and less privileged playing time in the city of Minaj are not measurable enough to justify the full package of the striker.

Oduenyi grabbed the flight of Minaj for a sustainable ability as well as to demonstrate a pure talent of football and has provided numerous moments that exhibit his talent, despite playing less than desired.

Critics will be quick to point to the lack of goals, but the Amuneke Academy player’s qualities often go beyond the score sheets. In the series of video clips, he has quickly justified himself as an unlucky talented player waiting to stage a blistering moment with goals.

It’s important to place context around Nigeria’s new environment.

In reality, Minaj must have seen great potential in Oduenyi before — providing him a spot in a bid to help him resuscitate his career while supplementing their ageing attacking line. Though, the striker is lacking game time but has remained calm with good focus to unleash his quality at a given opportunity.

Painfully, the former manager of Minaj who brought him to the club was sacked over poor outing and the fate of Oduenyi with the fate of the player imbalance with the new coach, and that could send a bigger signer to potential suitors from Belgium and Russia for the all round striker to finally move to a club where he can establish himself and stage the world with goals and gongs.

His quality was instrumental in FC Minaj move and he ignored the pleasure to focus and give everything on the pitch to regain all his fitness lost to injuries. Oduenyi’s talent could give him a surprise move to Europe elite team if he chooses to quit struggling FC Minaj in the summer.

The narrative around Oduenyi has been around the lack of goals and playing time even when the quality is hunting for greatness. He has yet to score for Minaj in any lesser game he has played. As is so often the case with Oduenyi, he has just missed that little bit of luck. He is getting into the right positions at the right time, but the final ball is found wanting.

Despite not having the game time as expected, Oduenyi has consistently proved a lot during the training sessions and remains focused to help the Ukrainian team beat off the relegation battle, he’s a patriot of his team, encouraging his team mates and providing adequate support on and off the pitch. All these could be a blessing in disguise for the young talent striker if he chooses to move to a more famous club in another country or a better assured team in Ukraine next season.

He’s full of wonderful goals, great ball passer and enduring talent.

In a surprising feature to Oduenyi’s game, he has proven to be a strong dribbler. Oduenyi has proven to have quick feet and can move the ball out of tight spaces.

Overlook the treacherous off ball movement and forget the near misses, even without those two items Oduenyi has demonstrated quality in other areas. He has the quality to play primarily as a second striker, meaning he plays just behind a pure #9.

Ugochukwu Oduenyi likes to drop deep into midfield to connect play. His subtle lay-offs and delicate one touch passes serve as the connective tissue between the midfield and attack. He’s an adaptable forward and is capable of playing anywhere across the attacking line.

A top scout from France once described as a different and classy striker whose glory is waiting. Matteo Ismail said: I was exclaimed with his videos, he’s a good striker but I think such a player could be a bit unlucky but I think patience and focus will unleash him very soon. He plays like Lukaku indeed but I think he’s faster and dribbles better than Roman.”

However, Turkey or Russia could be the next destination for the ambitious striker who dreamt to play and win for Nigeria whenever he had the opportunity to be there on a platter of gold

  • Children in Ramadan

    Children in Ramadan

    By Femi Abbas

Children are Allah’s greatest gift to legitimate couples. Their presence in a home is blessing. Their contribution to matrimonial security is immense. As the cynosures of their parents’ lives, those are children for you. They can sometimes act as teachers just as they can be available as students. They learn fast. They teach fast. They are a major security factor for parents in any given environment.

Whether in Ramadan or outside it, children have both temporal and spiritual roles to play in a matrimonial home. And with such roles, they sometimes create hope for humanity and sometimes, they signal despair. They are the greatest asset in the possession of parents in times of peace or those of danger. They are also the greatest weapon for their parents against the forces of Satan.

    THEIR INNOCENCE

Sometimes, because of their innocence, they pave way for Allah’s forgiveness and quick acceptance of prayers. And, most importantly, children guarantee the continuity of human existence on earth. It is only with them that the fulfilment of today’s promise is possible tomorrow.

    CHILDREN IN THE QUR’AN

In the Qur’an, children are mentioned many times and, most often, with reverence. They are treated in that glorious book as a major issue in the life of couples. As orphans, they do not only have a role to play, they also compel some adults without children to play a role relating to them.

    AS HEIRS

As heirs to their parents, they have substantial shares in inheritance. Muslim children are like lion cubs. They follow the footstep of their parents or guardians very scrupulously to the admiration of the latter. Muslim children are often with their parents during the five daily prayers. They watch their parents as the latter give charity to the poor. They accompany them to public lectures and Islamic social gatherings.

And, in Ramadan, children are part of the Muslims’ total spiritual package. They wake up with them at night. They fast with them in the day. They break the fast with them at sunset. They join their parents at Tafsir and night lectures. They participate in observance of Tarawih and Laylatul Qadr and in giving Zakatul Fitr to the poor.

In all these activities, they are supposed to be encouraged. Therefore, at the tender age of seven, they should be guided and encouraged to fast even if for half a day. And when they reach the age of 10 they should be strengthened in faith and in religious deeds through fasting. They should be provided with necessities of life both on the temporal and spiritual grounds. With these, they will grow up to become the fulfilment of their parents’ dreams.

It must be noted that most children grow up as good or bad citizens by emulating their parents. A child is therefore what his parents make him/her. If advantage of Ramadan is not taken by parents to mould their children into good Muslims what other platform will be used? Your child is your sun. Make hey with it while it shines. RAMADAN KARIM!

Court ends case on estate tussle after settlement

    By Joseph Jibueze

An Ogun State High Court has struck out a case on a dispute over the Iyalode Efunroye Tinubu Family Estate.

Justice O. Mabekoje ruled on an application to discontinue it by the applicants’ counsel Mr J.O.Ogunbiyi.

He relied on a supporting affidavit sworn to by Gafar Ibrahim, who stated that the families had closed ranks.

It followed the affirmation of Adamakin Investment and Works Limited and Chief Akinfolabi Akindele as having the power of attorney over the estate.

Before the case came up, some elders of the Shobowale and Lumosa families met to settle the dispute out of court.

The family, which consists of two branches – Shobowale and Lumosa – agreed that a board of trustees should be constituted to administer the affairs of the estate.

It was in a bid to recover a part of the estate, covering 16 local government areas in Lagos, which had been encroached upon by strangers and to harmonise the interest of the entire family and ward off impostors.

The heads of the two family branches and two accredited representative approached the court for the appointment of the trustees.

Last April 29, the court made an order appointing the second, third and fourth claimants as well as the late Chief Adams Lahan as the fourth trustees to the Estate of Late Iyalode Efunroye Tinubu.

The second and fourth claimants belong to the Lumosa branch of the family; the third claimant and the late Chief Lahan are of the Shobowale family.

Due to their inability to handle the complexities involved in the running of affairs of the entire estate, the trustees donated a power of attorney to Adamakin Investment and Works and Chief Akindele in August 2012 to act on their behalf.

The suit arose when some members of the board of trustees of the estate went to court in 2019 to challenge the legal status of Adamakin Investment and Works and Chief Akindele as the sole holders of the power of attorney.

‘WHO COVID-19 preventive measures adopted from Islam’

    By Tajudeen Adebanjo

The Rector, Federal Polytechnic, Ayede, Oyo State, Dr. Taofeek Abdul-Hameed, said the World Health Organisation (WHO) COVID-19 preventive measures were adopted from Islam.

Speaking during the University of Lagos Muslim Community (UMC) 16th Ramadan lecture, Abdul-Hameed, said the world has adopted the Muslim practice of quarantines in the form of lockdown, self-isolation and physical distance.

The Rector said: “Some precautionary steps highlighted by the WHO such as the washing of hands, isolation and travel ban, among others, were practiced by Muslims long before establishing WHO. For a devoted Muslim who observes prayer regularly, you must wash your hand at least 15 times in a day.

“WHO isolation preventive method is a common hadith of the Prophet Muhammad ‘When you are sick, don’t go to another country and when you hear there is epidemic in a country, don’t go there,”  he noted.

He added that this is not the first time the world has witnessed a pandemic, noting that COVID-19 was only more severe and deadly than the previous epidemics.

Director-General, Nigeria Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), Prof. Babatunde Lawal Salako, who chaired the event, urged Muslims to take the COVID-19 vaccine serious.

“If you refuse to take the vaccine, you are not only doing a disservice to yourself, you are doing a disservice to the rest of us,” he said.

He condemned the false COVID-19 vaccine claims trending on social media.

“… for every new drug, there will be a side effect. No perfect drug. In fact all drugs are poison and it should not be taken unless it is necessary. Even the common paracetamol has side effects, but your chances of living longer are much better than the side effect that you are going to get,” Salako said.

UMC Chairman, Prof. Lai Olurode, said all hands should be on deck to combat COVID-19.

Coronavirus, Prof Olurode said, has affected the Ummah in a variety of ways.

Sultan hails Tambuwal over feeding of orphans

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has praised Governor Aminu Tambuwal for feeding orphans and the needy during Ramadan.

Tambuwal yesterday said his administration has expended over N339 million to provide foodstuffs and clothing materials for orphans and needy persons across 87 districts of the state.

He gave the figures at the inauguration of the 2021 Ramadan support to orphans and the needy under the state Zakkat and Endowment Commission.

Sultan Abubakar thanked the governor for sustaining the gesture.

He assured the government of proper collaboration with individuals and organisations to continue to support the less privileged in the society.

Abubakar described the gesture as a great opportunity for the Sultanate Council to perform the most important job and serve Allah in the holy month of Ramadan.

He called on the people to continue to pray for leaders, most especially in the present month of Ramadan, to be able to address all challenges in the country.

Tambuwal said the gesture was to provide the needs of the society.

“The state government last year spent over N258.8 million for Ramadan exercise through Zakkat commission, which is now expanded to over N339.9 million for the same exercise this year.

“However, I want to use this medium to appreciate the Sultanate Council and the staff of the commission, for their commitment towards ensuring the sustainability of such projects,“ he said.

Chairman, Sokoto State Zakkat and Endowment Commission, Malam Muhammad Maidoki, said more than 100,000 beneficiaries in the 87 districts of the state, are expected to benefit from the gesture.

“In each district, 100 bags of grains will be shared to needy persons, with a cash donation of N5,000 each, and 100 clothing materials to 100 orphans for Sallah clothes, and N2,000 each for sewing”.

Maidoki added that the inauguration also consists of the distribution of individual Zakkat received through the commission and distribution of mattresses, grinding machines and freezers for empowerment of the needy.

  • Recurrent ransom

    Recurrent ransom

    Hardball

When bandits-cum-kidnappers struck at Greenfield University, Kaduna State, on April 20, it was yet another terrible evidence of the rising cases of kidnapping for ransom across the country. Significantly, it also showed how much money kidnappers dream of making from their evil activity. In this particular case, they demanded N800 million.

The invaders kidnapped more than 20 students. Tragically, three days after, the bodies of three of the abductees, a male and two females, were found at a location close to the university.

“We are still in shock,” a parent of one of the abducted students was quoted as saying after the bodies were found. “We did not expect the bandits would resort to killing our children because they had contacted us and demanded ransom.”

The concerned parents were negotiating with the kidnappers when the students were killed. “They called us directly and individually, but they demanded a collective ransom of N800 million,” according to the quoted parent.  “So, we met on the school premises and we called them trying to negotiate the ransom, but they insisted on the N800 million. We pleaded with them that the amount they were asking for was too much and beyond our power, but we never imagined or expected they were going to be so cruel and resort to killing our children.”

According to a study, more than $18 million was paid as ransom to kidnappers in the country from 2011 to 2020, and the greater part of the payment was from 2016 to 2020 when about $11 million was paid. In the local currency, these are huge figures indeed. It shows that kidnapping for ransom is a thriving business, albeit an evil one. Sadly, it is even regarded as a “growth industry.”

It is disturbing that some analysts forecast that kidnap-for-ransom cases will increase in the country as a result of increased unemployment.  This is a worrying scenario, considering that Nigeria already has one of the world’s highest rates of kidnap-for-ransom cases.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), Kayode Fayemi, recently attributed the country’s security challenges partly to its 33 percent unemployment rate. The country’s difficult socio-economic conditions do not justify kidnapping operations, but show why the authorities should urgently pursue improved socio-economic conditions to discourage kidnapping for ransom.

Predictably, those who kidnap for ransom are inspired by the idea of getting rich quick, which is why their activity is described as “economic kidnapping.”  The recurrent evil suggests that they are unlikely to stop unless they are stopped.
