Church donates free school for autistic, downs syndrome kids

    By Frank Ikpefan, Abuja

The Omega Power Ministries (OPM) has established a free school for people with autism and downs syndrome.

The General Overseer and Founder of OPM, Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere, said the establishment of the school was part of the church’s efforts to provide for less privileged children with special needs.

Apostle Chinyere told reporters that the school, located in Port Harcourt, would give children with special needs a sense of belonging and access to education.

He said its establishment was in line with OPM’s desire to have the children of the less privileged educated free of charge.

He added that the school would complement OPM’s 15 free regular primary and secondary schools located in different parts of the country.

Chinyere said: “Rich people whose children have special needs take them to special schools, but the poor who cannot afford to send their children to these schools regard the children as bad luck, some abandon them anywhere.

“In OPM, we decided to look for these children and handle them with care, using spiritual and physical means; we handle them with prayers.”

free regular primary and secondary schools sprang up in parts of the country.

“We are starting recruitment of professional teachers that will concentrate on these children with special needs because it is not every teacher that can handle them.

“We also provide these children with free school uniforms, foot wears, school bags and back-to-school supplies, just the way we distribute freely to children in our 15 regular schools.

“Also, equipment for special needs schools were purchased and the children have improved on many skills they did not have before.

“This is happening in a short while of the school’s existence and most of them who weren’t talking or writing prior to their enrolment into the school have started talking and writing,” he said.

One of the teachers who overcame autism, Mrs Chiamaka Mbekwe, an organist with Master’s Degree, said the children would overcome their conditions and be reintegrated into society.

Mbekwe said the children were being given special attention to find out what works or interests them before they can be taught.

“We provide play-based interventions that combine behavioural and developmental approaches because the attention spans of most of them are short and their eye contacts are not so good,” she explained.

OPM also has two free specialist hospitals for the health needs of the less privileged.

APC group attacks council chair for disrespecting Amaechi

    By Mike Odiegwu, Port Harcourt

A group in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has derided Ikwerre Local Government Chairman Samuel Nwanosike for abusing Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi, following the former governor’s recent comments on the 2023 governorship zoning.

Irked by Amaechi’s position suggesting that the riverine area should be allowed to produce the next governor, Nwanosike, a loyalist of Governor Nyesom Wike, said Amaechi lacked the capacity to decide where the next governor should come from.

Nwanosike, who is contesting to retain his office in the April 17 local government election, insisted that Amaechi was nobody and had no capacity to decide zoning.

The chairman said: “The truth our brother Amaechi forgets to understand is that power comes from God and that once a man becomes too proud of what God has given him, God will depart from him.

“Amaechi has no capacity whatsoever to come and tell Rivers State where they will zone governorship to. He is not qualified to come and tell Rivers people that he has zoned governorship to the riverine area. Who is Amaechi in the first place? What does he have? Who does he know?”

But the Progressives Grassroots Advocacy Initiative (PGAI) cautioned Nwanosike and asked him to respect elders and desist from insulting Amaechi.

The group, in a statement by its Coordinator, Mr. Henry Halliday and Secretary, Reginald Ugwuoma, said the comment by the Ikwerre council chairman was a desperate attempt to malign and ridicule the former governor, who had contributed to nation building.

He said: “One would think you’ve seen the worse from an excuse of the bunch of leaders in the PDP in Rivers State, but the worse is yet to come; from the comments attributed to Nwanosike, imposed errand boy of Governor Wike.

“It is laughable to hear ‘Ishi’, as he is called, throw jabs at the minister of transportation, saying he is a nobody. Can you believe it? We ask who is Samuel Nwanosike? Who knows him beyond the local government area he overseas.

“We think when playing politics we should do so as learned persons. Nobody has asked Nwanosike to bow down and worship Amaechi, far from it, but to say Amaechi is a nobody is obviously a comment laced with self-deceit and clear fear of the unknown. It exposes irresponsibility, vulgarity and absolute lack of home training.”

governor to zone the ticket to them.

“What goes on in APC is none of his business. Nwanosike isn’t half the man Amaechi is. Neither has he attained the level the minister has. He is just a local government chairman and should focus on developing the council. Amaechi is not in his league and with his penchant for disrespecting elders, he may never reach it.”

Gbajabiamila advocates synergy among arms of govt

    By Tony Akowe, Abuja

House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila has advocated for proper synergy among the three arms of government for Nigerians to enjoy the benefits of democracy.

He said those expecting the Legislature to fight with the Executive arm of government are ignorant of what separation of power is all about.

The Speaker also dismissed the belief by some Nigerians of the existence of a number one, two or three form of government, saying the three arms of government are equal with no senior or junior partner.

The Speaker, who spoke in an interview published in the current edition of the Green Chamber Magazine, an official publication of the House, also said until Nigerians begin to tune their minds to politics of issues, the nation would not get anywhere fast.

He was also of the view that Nigerians have assigned to them responsibilities they are not elected to perform and are not equipped to handle.

He said by nature of the system of government practised in the country, the three arms of government are independent of themselves and they are also dependent on each other for the smooth running of government.

Admitting the need to continue to work for the independence of the legislature, he said: “I think the Legislative arm of government is independent, but within that independence exist some dependence.

“We have three arms of government and what we need to understand is there is no number one, two and three. They are co-equal arms of government. There is no one part that is senior to the other. They have different responsibilities, which may appear and make one think that there is, but they are equal arms of government.

“We have to learn to depend on each other, we have to have a similar relationship and when there is that synergy, then, the people out there will begin to enjoy democracy. Democracy is the best form of government; but it depends on how you apply it.

“So, when I hear people talking about or expecting all three arms to clash, I know that they kind of miss the concept of democracy, just as they miss the idea of Separation of Powers and the Three Arms of Government.

“You don’t have to be in bed with each other, you don’t have to fight with each other either. But, as long as you can agree in the national interest, you can complement each other and that’s what we are doing. We are expected to do something called checks and balances.”

Dambazau losing touch with realities, says OPC

    By Tajudeen Adebanjo

The O’odua Peoples Congress (OPC) said the former Chief of Army Staff and Minister of Interior, Lt. Gen. Abdurahman Dambazau is gradually losing touch with the realities of the moment.

Its Publicity Secretary, Yinka Oguntimehin, said the statement credited to the former minister that the OPC was the same as the dreaded Boko Haram was capable of heating up the polity and disrupting national peace.

Oguntimehin described Dambazau as a northern extremist popularly noted for his unguarded statements and utterances.

He said: “Dambazau’s statement that OPC and IPOB are very much the same as the dreaded Boko Haram was made in bad faith and such statements have raised some fundamental questions about his intentions, interests and morality as a former COAS and minister of Interior… Such high profile ex-military officer cannot be trusted in the fight against insurgency.

“So, for such a person to have said that OPC is the same as Boko Haram is not only derogatory, but it is most unfortunate to say the least.”

According to Oguntimehin, “Boko Haram is adjudged globally as the third most dreaded terrorist groups in the world. And up till today, it remains as such with various cases of killings across the North.”

The OPC publicity scribe stated that the group has since its existence in 1994 remains one of the most dependable organisations  that have been defending the interest of the people of the South-west.

2023: Nigerians urged to vote tested administrators

General Overseer of the Victory Life Bible Church International Apostle Lawrence Achudume has urged Nigerians to choose tested administrators into positions authority and not just mere politicians.

He said as the 2023 electioneering campaign is gathering momentum, Nigeria needs “administrators with credible track records and not politicians with crowd”.

Apostle Achudume, who spoke yesterday while rounding off the church’s extra-ordinary convention with the theme, “The Verdict”, said if Nigerians want the desired change, they should stop voting people into power due to their large followership, but based on what they can offer.

“What we need is for Nigerians to choose leaders with intelligence; leaders who are business-minded, not leaders who are money-minded or those who come to office and think they are doing us a favour and begin to throw crumps at people.

“We need credible leaders and administrators at the helms of affairs, even as ministers, governor or president. Not those who have followers, but those who can do the work of building the nation,” the general overseer said.

Lamenting the fact that there are too many beggars around, Apostle Achudume said Nigerians should learn to work with their hands.

Akwa Ibom State Governor Emmanuel Udom, who was the special guest at the event, attributed the success so far recorded by his administration to the power of vision backed by prayers and hard work.

He, therefore, urged people to always follow their vision with actions and hard work to achieve success, saying: “When you persistently pray about your vision and work hard towards it, you will achieve success.”

Udom said whatever God has called people to do, they must do it diligently and consistently.

He said: “For instance with my meagre allocation, there is no way I could have paid salary and still build the Ibom airlines, which today is making wave. It is a miracle and a result of vision backed by prayers and hard work.

“When you have vision, keep working and praying about it. It will surely lead to success.”

The governor added that the state government would soon launch the regional arm of the Ibom Airline while two new additional air buses would be purchased to upgrade the airline by the time he would be marking the second year of his second term in office.

  • NBA urges Buhari to order probe into military invasion in Benue

NBA urges Buhari to order probe into military invasion in Benue

    By Uja Emmanuel, Makurdi

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Makurdi Branch, has urged  President Muhammadu Buhari to order probe into the invasion of Konshisha and Gwer East local government areas of Benue State.

The appeal was contained in a statement yesterday  in Makurdi by its branch chairman, Justin Gbagir.

The Defence Headquarters had claimed that unknown men killed an Army captain and 11 soldiers on Achoho-Oju road in Konshisha.

According to the Defence Headquarters, the soldiers were on special operation to bring peace to the warring communities of Bonta and Okpute.

But, Gbagir appealed to President Buhari to urgently caution the military and order investigation into the invasion of the two local government areas.

He said the military had on April 7 and April 8 invaded eight communities in Konshisha and Gwer East local government areas, killing and destroying property worth billions of naira.

Gbagir named the communities as including Bonta, Gungul, Adoka, Guleya, Agidi, Gbinde, Agune in Konshisha and Mbayase of Ullam in Gwer-East Local Government Area.

He said NBA condemned  the killing of innocent people in whatever guise by either the security operatives or civilians.

“Consequently, we are worried given the explanations offered by the military on the assignment of the military officers and the length and the depth the operation nosedived and the armoury employed on helpless civilians.

“We call on President Buhari and the Military High Command to conduct an investigation into the real intent of the operation, which has brought in a load of humanitarian crisis that left innocent citizens homeless.

“The incident also led to the destruction of foodstuffs, economic trees and alleged loss of human lives.

“This is one destructions too many, which fuels the thinking that it is premeditated, properly planned and executed with the agenda to decimate and exterminate the Tivs,” he said.

Gbagir questioned the operational guidelines issued to the officers on the said rescue mission of the missing soldiers as they were currently destroying villages and killing people in areas outside the scene of the act.

“If this was actually the mission of these officers as designated by their superiors, then switching the touch pads of the trigger on helpless communities outside the warring areas of Bonta and Okpute is a matter of concern.

“This also leads to solemn contemplation as to the real motive of the Army.

“We further lament the brazen, uncivil, beastly and commando approach of the Nigerian Army on the lives and properties of the communities.”

According to the branch chairman, the NBA would continue to respect the rule of law and promote the sanctity of human life in the country.

“The proper thing to do in an allegation of crime is for the accused/perpetrator as the case may be to go through the full procedure of criminal trials as provided under the country’s law,’’ he said.

He appealed to the Benue Government to urgently provide shelter and relief materials to the affected communities.

  • Jordan royal family unites after ‘rift’

Jordan royal family unites after ‘rift’

Jordan’s King Abdullah and his half-brother Prince Hamzah have appeared in public for the first time since claims of a royal rift.

Prince Hamzah last week said he had been put under house arrest as part of a crackdown on critics. He was accused of plotting to destabilise the kingdom, which he has denied.

King Abdullah expressed his “shock” at the alleged plot in a statement.

The pair were seen attending a ceremony together yesterday.

They joined other members of the royal family commemorating the 100th anniversary of Jordan’s independence. Images posted to social media show members of the royal family laying wreaths at the memorial to the unknown soldier.

It is the first time Prince Hamzah has been seen since the rift erupted a week ago.

On April 3, Prince Hamzah, 41, released two videos to the BBC in which he said he had been placed under house arrest.

He said a senior official had told him he was not allowed to go out or communicate with people because of criticisms of the government or king voiced at meetings where he had been present.

The apparent house arrest is thought to have followed a visit by the prince to tribal leaders, where he is said to have garnered some support to destabilise the kingdom.

Deputy Prime Minister Ayman Safadi said the prince had been liaising with “some foreign entities” and had been monitored for some time.

He accused the prince of seeking to mobilise “clan leaders against the government”. Mr Safadi said officials had tried to discourage the prince rather than take legal action, but Prince Hamzah had “dealt with this request negatively”.

He added that at least 16 people, including a former adviser to King Abdullah and another member of the royal family, had been arrested over the plot. But no members of the armed forces were said to be among those detained.

On Monday, Prince Hamzah signed a letter confirming his loyalty to King Abdullah. In the letter, released by the palace, Prince Hamza is quoted as saying: “I place myself in the hands of his majesty the king… I will remain committed to the constitution of the dear Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.”

On Wednesday, King Abdullah released a statement which was read out on state television, describing news of the alleged plot as “painful”.

He reassured Jordanians that the crisis was now over.

“Parties behind the sedition came from within our house and outside it,” his address said, adding: “The sedition has been nipped in the bud.”

The eldest son of the late King Hussein and his favourite wife Queen Noor, Prince Hamzah is a graduate of the UK’s Harrow School and the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst. He also attended Harvard University in the US and has served in the Jordanian armed forces.

He was named crown prince of Jordan in 1999 and was a favourite of King Hussein, who often described him in public as the “delight of my eye”. However, he was seen as too young and inexperienced to be named successor at the time of King Hussein’s death in 1999.

Instead his elder half-brother, Abdullah, ascended the throne and stripped Hamzah of the title of crown prince in 2004, giving it to his own son. The move was seen as a blow to Queen Noor, who had hoped to see her eldest son become king.

  • ‘Mossad behind cyber-attack’ on Iranian nuclear facility’

‘Mossad behind cyber-attack’ on Iranian nuclear facility’

Israeli intelligence was responsible for the incident yesterday at Iran’s Natanz nuclear plant, which saw a blackout at an electricity distribution network, Israeli media outlets are claiming, citing unnamed “Western sources.”

Calling it an “attack” and an example of “nuclear terrorism,” Iranian officials said the incident had not caused any damage, but reports in the Israeli media that followed disputed that.

Citing anonymous sources, various outlets, including the Times of Israel and the Jerusalem Post, claimed the facility sustained “severe” and “extensive” damage as a result of a “cyber-attack.”

While Tehran stopped short of naming the culprit, the Jerusalem Post did not shy away from naming the intelligence service Mossad as being responsible for the attack. A source quoted by the Post specifically claimed that the incident in Natanz – one of the key sites of Iran’s nuclear enrichment programme – was “not an accident.”

While no evidence has yet been provided, “Western sources” have been cited as confirming Mossad’s role.

The incident at the facility was initially described as an “electricity problem” within the power grid that had caused neither injuries nor any pollution. However, the head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation, Ali Akbar Salehi, later described the incident as “nuclear terrorism,” and said Tehran reserved the right to respond and take action against those responsible.

Israeli officials have not made any public comments on the incident thus far. The media have been quick to interpret statements by both Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) chief of staff as a nod to Tel Aviv’s alleged involvement.

“The battle against Iran and its proxies, and against Iranian armament, is a giant task,” Netanyahu said, in what the Jerusalem Post described as a “hint” at the possibility of Mossad’s involvement. “The situation that exists today is not necessarily the one that will exist tomorrow,” he added.

The words of IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant-General Aviv Kochavi were summed up by the Post, in turn, as “a rare strong hint pointing to Israeli involvement.”

  • German conservatives move to succeed Merkel

German conservatives move to succeed Merkel

The contest to succeed Angela Merkel as the centre-right candidate for Chancellor in this September’s Bundestag election has been opened after the leaders of both Bavaria’s Christian Social Union (CSU) and the Christian Democrats (CDU) said yesterday they were ready to run for the post.

Speaking after attending a meeting of the executive committee of the CDU/CSU coalition parliamentary group in Berlin, CSU leader Markus Söder confirmed he would be rival to the CDU chief Armin Laschet.

“We have found out that both are suitable and both are willing,” said Söder. “What is important is that we also give each other respect. And I can say this from the beginning: no matter what the decision will be in the end, we will both personally work together very well.”

“We have both declared our willingness to run for chancellor,” Laschet said. “The readiness of two is on the table, the tasks are also on the table. And now we will begin consultations, first in the CDU tomorrow and then in the CSU.”

Laschet had already spoken out in favour of reaching a decision quickly before Söder’s announcement. The Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia has recently faced criticism of his proposals on dealing with the pandemic.

Laschet and Söder agreed that the person with the better chances in the Bundestag elections should enter the race as candidate for chancellor.
