How women entrepreneurs can grow their businesses, by FirstBank Chairman

    By Collins Nweze

The Chairman, First Bank Nigeria Limited, Mrs. Ibukun Awosika, has given women entrepreneurs some tips on how to put their businesses in the global markets.

She spoke during the First Gem 4.0 conference held in Lagos, with the theme: ‘The Art of Negotiation’ and convened to provide women with insights on the secrets of wealth management, investment and savings.

According to Awosika, women should create advantage for themselves by being informed about their environment, including having understanding of government policies.

She said: “If you do not know the direction of government policy, you cannot know if you are working against the direction of such policy and that will leave you in the dark.  It is important you create advantage for yourself, so that you can compete. And part of that advantage is in you educating yourself, so that you will be able to compete.”

According to Awosika, the way the world is structured makes room for small businesses that understand the power of connectivity to thrive.

“ It does not matter how little your business is, or the products you are dealing with, there is a global reference point, that affects what you do, at the corner of your room. Because every action somewhere has a ripple effect that will eventually land at your doorstep, your ability to survive situations like that gives you an edge,” she said.

Continuing, she said: “No matter how little your business is,  the connectivity across the whole world will affect it. It is important that you pay attention to what is going on around the world. Pay attention to political issues, because political issues from around the world and local environment impact the economy of your country and your business,” she said.

  • FMDQ to deepen market with derivatives

FMDQ to deepen market with derivatives

By Taofik Salako, Deputy Group Business Editor

FMDQ Securities Exchange Limited will soon launch a standardised market for exchange traded derivatives, a move that will deepen the financial system.

FMDQ said the implementation of its derivatives market development project is almost completed with possible launch this year.

As part of its market development mandate, and in furtherance of the enlightenment and capacity building on exchange traded derivatives, FMDQ organised training for capital market correspondents.

The training, under FMDQ Academy Derivatives Market Webinar series was themed: “Understanding exchange traded derivatives market’’.

An exchange traded derivative is a financial contract that is listed and traded on a regulated exchange. It has become increasingly popular because of its advantages on over-the-counter (OTC) derivative. These advantages included standardisation, liquidity, and elimination of default risk.

Vice President, Market Architecture, FMDQ, Jumoke Olaniyan, said the derivatives project started about two and half years ago as the exchange saw the need to introduce derivatives into the capital market.

She outlined that exchange traded derivatives could be used to hedge exposure or speculate on a wide range of financial assets like commodities, equities, currencies, and even interest rates, adding that the global market is now moving in the direction of derivatives.

She noted that the gross market value of OTC derivatives which provides a measure of amounts at risk, rose from $11.6 trillion to $15.5 trillion during the first half of 2020, led by increases in interest rate derivatives.

She added that with the introduction of derivatives, government could leverage the products to hedge against fluctuation in crude oil prices.

“The exchange derivatives space remains to be tapped by the government. We have a 91 per cent focus on OTC derivatives while it is nine per cent on the part of the exchange-traded derivatives and the globe is now shifting to this aspect due to the fact that it performed impeccably well during the global financial crisis.

“It is this form of exchange that is being implemented by the FMDQ in which we have been working on its implementation status which is now in Phase II.

“Once it is introduced and it takes off, it would present an opportunity for our own government to leverage on traded derivatives and use it to hedge risks. In actual fact, the capital market needs derivatives to hedge against market volatilities,” Olaniyan said.

Group Head, Derivatives Market Group, FMDQ, Oluwaseun Afolabi, noted that with the introduction of the derivatives market, there will be an increased participation by local and foreign investors in Nigerian market as well as increased liquidity.

“Derivatives are needed in the market as it will bring an increase in the secondary market liquidity, efficient capital allocation and risk management, financial system stability, market transparency, market sophistication, human capital development and economic growth,” Afolabi said.

Rodriguez’s skills thrilled Iwobi at Everton

Alex Iwobi has named James Rodriguez as the most skillful player at Everton but says the Colombian has surprised him since his summer arrival from Real Madrid.

Iwobi has often been left on the bench at the expense of Rodriguez but has covered for him on the right-wing during some extended absences this season.

Despite going head-to-head for a first-team spot it seems the Nigeria international holds his teammate in high esteem.

Speaking to BBC MOTDx, Iwobi hailed the 29-year-old maestro but admitted he was taken aback at one trait he possesses when asked who was the ‘tekkers man’, or most skilful player, in the Blues squad.

“I’m gonna give it [to] James because what shocked me was his right-foot finish, and I was like I didn’t know he had it in him,” he said.

“Some of the passes he plays, I don’t know how he sees it, it’s not normal.”

Injuries have robbed us of Rodriguez’s services for 10 Premier League games this season but in the other 19 he has certainly shown his substantial quality, in the most part.

He possesses something different to most of our squad with his silky skills and elite-level vision which has seen him pick up four assists, though that’s a number he will surely be looking to improve upon further.

Rodriguez has struck six times this season but remarkably 50 percent (three) have come via his right foot [Transfermarkt], with his latest effort coming on Easter Monday in the disappointing 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace at Goodison Park.
