Olu of Warri succession crisis: I remain Ologbotsere – Ayiri Emami

By Shola O’neil, Regional Editor Southsouth and Elo Edremoda, Warri

The Ologbotsere of Warri, Delta State, Chief Ayiri Emami, yesterday, declared as illegal and confusing, the general assembly of the Itsekiri people scheduled for today.

Emami, in a statement, said  that as the Ologbotsere, he has the prerogative  to convene a general assembly of the Itsekiri.

He said he did not authorize or delegate  any one to call a general assembly of the kingdom.

A section of the Ginuwa 1 Ruling House announced the suspension of Emami on Monday, and installed Chief Johnson Atserueghe, the Iyatsere, to act in his stead.

Against this background, there were hints that a general assembly of the kingdom has been slated for Ode-Itsekiri (Big Warri) today.

Chief Emami’s suspension has been debunked by the Otolus (princes), who insisted that only an Olu has the power to suspend or remove an Ologbotsere.

Meanwhile, Chief Emami has urged security agencies to take action against the conveners of the assembly, stressing that their action could lead to a breach of peace in the kingdom.

He said he has not “summoned any general assembly in Ode-Itsekiri or any another venue.”

“Information reaching me is that some elements who want to cause confusion in our dear Warri Kingdom are making frantic efforts to call tor a general assembly.

“Let it be that that by virtue of the Declaration BDSL 147 pursuant to the edict of 1979, which guides the procedure for selection to be he succession of the throne of Olu of Warri, when an Olu is indisposed, it is on the Ologbotsere that has the power to summon General Assembly of the Itsekiri nation. Any action taken by any other person)s) is in confrontation to the Edict,” he said.

Chief Emami called on security agencies to hold those who flout the edict responsible for any breach of peace that occurs in Warri Kingdom.

  • How we saved N750m monthly for FG – Pension directorate

How we saved N750m monthly for FG – Pension directorate

    By Adekunle Jimoh, Ilorin

The Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) has said that in October, last year, it removed no fewer than 20,089 unverified pensioners from its payroll.

The directorate added that the exercise saved N750 million monthly in pensions for the Federal Government.

The Director, Parastatal Pension Department under PTAD, Kabiru Yusuf, said this in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, in his address at the biannual delegate conference of the Federal Parastatals and Private Pensioners Association of Nigeria (FEPPAN), Railway branch.

He added, that, “When we took over in August 2015 to pay pension of parastatal workers there was no database. We only got names, serial numbers, bank account numbers and monthly pensions from the respective agencies and all those managing the scheme at the time. It was on the basis of that, that we were getting budgetary provisions from the Federal Government.

“In October 2020, we removed those on our payroll that had not been verified. They were about 20,089. Before we did that, we notified the unions, the agency, and of course, the supervising ministry and asked that anyone that had a genuine case should forward his or her complaints to the dedicated address that we created.

“By that time too, we collectively resolved that the time had been

sufficient enough time for anybody that had a genuine case to have made himself or herself available for the exercise.

“When we implemented the first phase of the outcome of the

verification, we discovered that the monthly pension amount tied to the 20,089 pensioners that we removed was about N750 million. That was real savings for government. It means our monthly pension figures reduced by N750 million. And it will only start increasing for any single pensioner that will get back to our payroll based on valid and genuine documentation.”

Yusuf said, currently, the directorate is embarking on mop-up verification exercise of pensioners across the nation.

He said, “The mop-up verification being embarked upon by PTAD for pensioners is essentially designed for those who missed the open field general verification that ran between April and November 2019 across the geo-political zones. The mop-up is a function of the invitation we received from pensioners who want to be verified.

Based on the applications we received in Lagos and some of the states around Lagos our team is currently verifying those pensioners that their documents have been received and reviewed.

“It is our plan to go to all the geo-political zones of the country based on applications too. We planned to use the outcome of the verification we did between April and November 2019 to take a decision. Unfortunately, we could not do that because of COVID-19. So we waited and gave opportunity for those who missed the exercise then to come into our offices,” he added.

  • Why we want drug test for all Nigerians – Marwa

Why we want drug test for all Nigerians – Marwa

    Agency Reporter

The Chairman, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Buba Marwa, has said that the current push to conduct a drug test on politicians, workers and students, is to enable the organization to provide urgent help to those who need treatment and rehabilitation, in addition to serving as deterrence.

Marwa spoke during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)  with a firm, Primly Services Limited (PSL) for the supply of free drug test kits to NDLEA in Abuja, on Thursday.

Explaining the rationale behind the push for a drug test, he said: “Practically, all Nigerians should be subjected to drug test: politicians, students, workers and all.

“We have set the ball rolling at the agency because charity begins at home. This will enable us to know those afflicted, who need treatment and rehabilitation.

“Equally, it will deter drug abuse because if you know that the result of a drug test will hamper your progression in school, political career or at work, it will deter you.

“In the same vein, we do expect parents to make sure their children don’t get married to addicts by insisting on a drug test before marriage.”

He was delighted that the MoU was finally signed almost three years after the Federal Government had approved the deal.

Marwa said PSL has provided high-quality test kits at no cost to the NDLEA, adding that the company will recover its cost during testing.

Speaking earlier, the Managing Director of PSL, Vincent Udenze, said, apart from the test kits, the company would “ensure that the kits are one of the best in the country, and we will not fail in our duty in this regard.”

  • We hired consultants to ensure transparency in tertiary institutions’ activities – Makinde

We hired consultants to ensure transparency in tertiary institutions’ activities – Makinde

    Our Reporter

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has promised that the issues surrounding the strike action by some state-owned tertiary institutions, declaring would be resolved within this month.

The governor explained that the decision to engage Platinum Consultants, which is the crux of the matter between the state and some of the institutions, became necessary to ensure transparency and accountability in the system.

According to Makinde, his administration’s desire to improve the quality of education in the state had led to its scaling up the subventions to tertiary institutions up to 100 percent from the 50 percent, which the last administration raised it to in the last days of the government.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Taiwo Adisa explained that the governor, who spoke shortly after inaugurating the Governing Council of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso said that the government had to engage Platinum Consultants to look into the Internally Generated Revenue activities in the tertiary institutions.

The governor maintained that the government resorted to hiring consultants because financial activities in the institutions were opaque and that the institutions were not ready to embrace transparency in their transactions.

He said: “Let me also use this opportunity to talk about the lingering crisis at The Polytechnic Ibadan. Though most of the other tertiary institutions that embarked on the strike action have backed off, it is remaining only The Polytechnic Ibadan.

“The students were at the Secretariat the other day to make their grievances known and we listened to them. But I must make this very clear; we would not have got into this situation if those schools’ governing councils did their jobs transparently and honestly.

“What were the issues they were talking about? They were saying they don’t want Platinum Consultants and other things. But we had to resort to hiring consultants because of the opacity of their transactions.

“The day before the previous administration left, they moved the higher institutions’ subvention from 25 percent to 50 percent and from that 50 percent, we moved it to 100 percent. We said we would take it on because education is one of the major pillars of this administration.

“But I said to them that if we are moving on with 100 percent subventions, you should also be open with your IGR. We watched the situation for several months and we did not hear anything about the IGR. As a result of that, we hired a consultant.”

Governor Makinde, who assured students and stakeholders in the state that the government would take the decision that will be in the best interest of all stakeholders and the progress of the state charged the managements of tertiary institutions to accept that the old order of lack of transparency in the financial activities of institutions has gone for good.

“We know that they [the institutions] are unwilling to accept that the old order of things is gone, but it is gone really. Well, we will be making a decision about the next steps this month but I believe anyone protesting has the right to do so. But it must be done with the future of the students of those institutions in mind because time is money. If they keep wasting their time, courses that they are supposed to finish in two years, because they are spending a lot of time protesting and disrupting academic activities, they (the students) will bear the brunt.

“We are here to work together; to resolve this problem. So, we should be making a decision within this month. Let me reassure the students and all well-meaning stakeholders that whatever decision we take will be in the interest of progress and they also need to know that sometimes, we need to make sacrifices so that future generations may benefit,” the governor added.

  • Guardiola: Man City cannot afford Aguero replacement

Guardiola: Man City cannot afford Aguero replacement

MANCHESTER City manager Pep Guardiola has said the club are unlikely to buy a striker this summer to replace the outgoing Sergio Aguero.

City confirmed on Monday that Aguero, 32, will leave when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Guardiola has been looking at options, with Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Braut Haaland, 20, at the top of the list of potential targets.

However, Guardiola feels the fees currently being quoted are too high.

“I don’t know what is going to happen but at these prices we are not going to buy any striker,” he said.

“It’s impossible. We cannot afford it. All the clubs are struggling financially, us as well.

“Today there is more chance we will not buy a striker next season.”

Dortmund are reported to want at least 150m euros (£128m) for Norway international Haaland, whose agent Mino Raiola has met with Barcelona and Real Madrid about a move.

Haaland’s current deal expires in 2024, though it is thought to contain a release clause of 75m euros (£64m) that can be activated next year.

England captain Harry Kane is another possible option for City, though his Tottenham contract also does not expire until 2024.

Aguero, who signed from Atletico Madrid in 2011, is City’s record goalscorer, with 257 goals in 384 appearances for the club.

He famously scored the injury-time winner against QPR in 2012 which clinched the club’s first English title in 44 years, and has since helped City win three more Premier League titles, one FA Cup and five League Cups.

Guardiola said it is “impossible” that City could replace the Argentine with someone who would replicate his achievements.

“We know how important he is in present and past, these decisions are never easy,” he said.

Arsenal’s Luiz ruled out of Liverpool clash with knee problem

ARSENAL defender David Luiz has been ruled out of Saturday’s Premier League clash with Liverpool.

The Brazilian started each of the Gunners’ last four league games prior to the international break, as well as both legs of each of the club’s Europa League knockout ties.

A club statement said: “David has experienced discomfort in his right knee and is being further assessed.

“David will not be available for Saturday’s match.”

The Brazilian’s absence leaves Mikel Arteta to choose between Gabriel, Pablo Mari and Rob Holding for his starters at centre-back.

The latter picked up a thigh problem while on international duty with England U21s, while Saka was prevented from joining up with Gareth Southgate’s senior squad by a hamstring injury.

“Bukayo will be assessed ahead of Saturday’s match regarding his availability,” the statement said.
