32 killed as two trains collide in southern Egypt

Two passenger trains collided in the south of Egypt yesterday, causing dozens of casualties, the health ministry said.

The incident took place in the village of al-Sawamaa in Sohag governorate in Upper Egypt, according to initial  reports. State television reported 32 instant deaths and injuries to 66 people, citing the health ministry.

The spokesperson of the health ministry, Khaled Mogahed, said the number was ”expected to rise”. Thirty-nine  ambulances were immediately deployed to  the scene.

A health ministry source told Cairo 24 news earlier: “The number of injuries has exceeded dozens so far, and they have been transferred to Maragha Hospital, Tahta Hospital and Sohag Hospital.”

The governorate’s hospitals declared “a state of emergency” to receive casualties, the source added. Egypt’s railway authority said that the crash took place when emergency brakes were triggered by “unknown individuals”.

The brakes caused one of the trains to stop and the other to crash into it from behind. The authority is conducting further investigations, it said.

Videos and images shared by social media users showed graphic scenes of attempts to rescue some injured passengers from inside the carriages, with victims screaming for help.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi commented on the collision on Facebook.

“I am closely following the tragic incident… The pain in our hearts today will only increase our determination to end such a pattern of catastrophes,” he wrote.

He pledged “deterrent punishment” for those responsible for the accident.

“I have issued directives to the concerned agencies to take all necessary measures and provide adequate compensation to the families of the martyrs and victims,” he added.

In his first statement on the incident later on Friday, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said he has instructed the relevant authorities to swiftly transfer the injured to hospitals for urgent care.

“The prime minister ordered the relevant officials to move immediately to the scene, to provide the necessary support, and to quickly deal with the situation there,” local media cited the cabinet as saying.

Egypt’s railway network has a long history of deadly collisions and has routinely been criticised for its poor safety standards.

The country’s worst rail disaster occurred in 2002 when at least 370 people were killed after a fire broke out in seven third-class carriages in a passenger train south of Cairo.

Buhari urged to apply Ibori loot to FG projects in Delta

    By Eric Ikhilae, Abuja

President Muhammadu Buhari has been urged to deploy the funds looted by ex-Governor James Ibori, but returned to Nigeria by the British Government, to the completion of many abandoned Federal Government projects in Delta State.

A group of Delta State indigenes, under the aegis of Urhobo Progressive Union (UPU), argued that the Federal Government’s plan to apply the recovered funds to the completion of projects outside the state would amount to double jeopardy for the Delta people.

UPU’s position is contained in a letter for appeal, sent to Buhari and copied the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.

They named some federal projects that require urgent attention and revival within Delta State to include the Sea Ports, Steel Complex, Gas plant and Petroleum Refinery.

  • Kwara hijab controversy: South West Baptist Conferences demand return of mission schools

Kwara hijab controversy: South West Baptist Conferences demand return of mission schools

    By Adekunle Jimoh, Ilorin

As the furore over wearing of hijab (Muslim headscarf) in grant-aided schools in Kwara State rages on, the 13 Baptist Conferences in South Western Nigeria yesterday urged Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to consider return of the schools to the original owners.

The Kwara and Kogi states’ spokesperson of the group, Rev (Dr.) Oyewale Oyeniyi, said this while addressing reporters in Ilorin.

Rev Oyeniyi urged Christians in the state to always maintain law and order “knowing that our God will surely continue to fight for us.”

He said: “It is high time the state government consider the return of mission schools to the original owners as we have seen in Lagos and Osun states. As Baptists, we have shown in these two states that we have what it takes to maintain and cater for our schools staff and students and we are willing to accept what belongs to us originally.”

“We also want the governor to be unbiased in the discharge of orders as pertaining to the wearing of hijab in the mission schools since the matter is still in the Supreme Court with the state surely served by the court; for the interest of peace and uninterrupted educational system, any Muslim parent who wants his /her child or children to wear hijab compulsorily should honourably withdraw his/her child or children to Muslim established schools instead of causing mayhem in the mission schools.”

The Bola Tinubu Colloquium will focus on peace-building and national cohesion as a tool for growth and prosperity in Nigeria.

The theme interrogates these issues in the light of contemporary incidents and commentaries in the public space with ethnic and religious dimensions.

“Our objective is to explore the implications of violent conflicts and innovative strategies for sustaining peace in a heterogeneous society with multi-ethnic groups, such as Nigeria,” the organisers said.

Dani Rodrik is the Ford Foundation Professor of International Political Economy at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He is currently President-Elect of the International Economic Association and Co-Director of Economics for Inclusive Prosperity. He is an economist whose research revolves around globalisation, economic growth and development, and political economy. His current work focuses on how to create more inclusive economies in developed and developing societies.

The professor will deliver the keynote address titled: “Where Can Growth Go? The Social Conflict Push.” He will speak along the line of his thoughts as promoted in his work, “Where did all the Growth Go? External Shocks, Social Conflict, and Growth Collapses.” He postulates that domestic social conflicts are key to understanding why growth rates lack persistence and why so many countries have experienced a growth collapse since the mid-1970s.

His Excellency, Dr. George Weah, will also be speaking on the tenuous nature of rebuilding a country after brutal civil wars, emphasising the importance of national reconciliation, trust-building for the forging of national cohesion and unity, as well as bringing a country back from the brink.

The event kicks off at 12 Noon, and everyone can register at www.bit.ly/BolaTinubuColloquium.
